HBO does that all the time when it isn't a Boxing After Dark special.

It’s just that they’ve had more than usual so far this year.

This is the first World Championship Boxing of 2010. They’ve had three BADs (Lopez-Luevano / Gamboa-Mtagwa, Alexander-Urango, Maidana-Cayo) and a PPV (Pacquiao-Clottey).

HBO has gone three months with three fights on their network (including a bagel in February), the biggest being Lopez-Luevano. I mean part of me looks at their coming run starting tonight and goes, “Wow, that’s crazy,” but then I realize we deserve it.

I have never fallen in love with Curb. I like it, but I watch it on demand, you know what I mean?

Treme looks fucking awesome. My three favorite shows in the history of televised programming are The Sopranos, Deadwood and The Wire, so I mean, I have a pretty clear pattern. F-bombs + HBO + intense drama + great storytelling = win. Treme has F-bombs + HBO + intense drama + The Wire + Kim Dickens + JOHN GOODMAN YEAH! + Steve Zahn? Alright!

It was a David Milch show, yeah. There’s a lot of speculation about that show. I hope it becomes a cult classic — part of me always thought that show was some elaborate prank. To this day I’m not sure if it sucks or was awesome, but Ed O’Neill was tremendous on there, and combining that and Modern Family (which is OK, but again with great work from O’Neill) I’m starting to wonder how much really good Ed O’Neill acting we missed out on thanks to fuckin’ Married…with Children.

I think Yordan has a very solid chance here of throwing a lot of people for a loop. I remember before he fought Guerrero they didn’t even bother to measure his ass… didn’t even release his age, I think. Indonesia, Thailand, southeast Asia are misty, rocky boxing waters in which many boats have crashed and sunk. People look at some of these guys records and shrug, not realizing how different the matchmaking process is over there. You don’t have the same process over there as here. It’s a different boxing culture.

I’m just saying the records themselves can be misleading. They don’t build up these awe-inspiring “20-0-0” records over there by feeding guys dead meat for a few years. It’s a rougher ride, and the matchmaking is more even. They can be beating guys who might have been “someone” had they come up in a system designed for mismatches and careful managing.

Caballero-Yordan R1

Clipping right by Yordan early. Body shot by Caballero. Caballero stick his jab out. Yordan falls down as they get tangled up in close, almost a bit of a shoulder shove by Caballero. Caballero really letting his hands fly to start this one.

Yordan seems a hair puzzled by Caballero’s length. He’s having real trouble getting inside and now is freezing up outside. Caballero is swinging his wild shots from both sides. Body shots are landing really well. Caballero looks as good as ever, but there’s a left to the body by Yordan. Good opening round for Celestino.

Caballero 10-9

Caballero-Yordan R2

Yordan does throw when he gets close, so at least he’s not deer in the headlights once he does get there. Caballero unloading again. Caballero landing some real good shots again this round, and controlling most of the fight. Caballero’s workrate has slowed a little bit, but he’s still dominating the round. Wicked body shot by Caballero. The way he can windmill a body shot in is really unique. Yordan is getting battered. Left hook by Yordan does land, though. He’s not intimidated. On the list of problems AND DOWN GOES YORDAN ON AN UPPERCUT!

What a counter shot that was. Yordan is out of his league. Great knockdown, round ends, and now Yordan might be in some real trouble if he panics.

Caballero-Yordan R3

Yordan with a left hook that gets Caballero, but not flush. Caballero was leaning back and it just clipped him. Yordan with a left hook. Yordan has come out hard this round. Caballero slows it down some, and gets the body work going again. And now with a minute left we’ve got a competitive round, but Caballero has taken control once again.

Left hook Yordan, Caballero with a series of body shots. Everything Yordan has done has been answered. Wild swing on a left from Caballero misses, and the round ends. Closest of the fight.

Caballero-Yordan R4

Yordan’s had his struggles with Caballero’s height for sure, but he’s also had trouble just plain defending. That’s part height, but he’s a bit sloppy in that regard. Yordan is tough and hanging in, but Caballero is beating him up to the body especially. Even these potshots when they’re leaning on each other have intent behind them. More body shots by Caballero, and he’s really beating on him in the final minute. Yordan isn’t throwing at all this round and is looking like he’s starting to question what, exactly, he needs to do. Caballero slapped him with about seven left hands to the side of the head to end the round.

Caballero-Yordan R5

Lampley says Yordan’s corner said nothing. I’m guessing their interpreter just sucks.

Uppercut inside by Caballero. Yordan clips him again with a left hook, right hand misses. Another left lands. Caballero looks exceptionally confident right now. He has no fear of Yordan and he’s preying on this kid. Left hook Yordan again, though. He just hasn’t budged him.

Yordan is having a better round, but Caballero’s activity is possibly distracting the judges anyway. Yordan is looking like he’s getting a little tired already. That happens with tons of body shots. Caballero turns up the head toward the end of the round again, and Yordan starts backing down and covering up. He springs out of those stances with left hook lunges, but those aren’t landing.

Caballero-Yordan R6

Yordan is working hard to change the fight and all they can talk about is whether or not his corner should stop the fight. Ther’es a big left hook by Yordan, but Caballero takes it nicely. “Caballero just blinked. That’s all.” Yes, Jim, he’s Superman.

Caballero does start battering him again, with more heavy body shots, long limbs flying all over the place. There’s another left hook, flush again. But that is about all Yordan has done this round. Caballero warned twice this round about his elbows.

Caballero 10-9
Caballero 60-53

I have this a shutout, but it’s not the jaw-dropping, all-time destruction they’re making it out to be. As usual, they’re stuck in their narrative, and no longer calling the fight much at all.

Merchant has lost it. “Someone should take it upon themselves to stop. this. slaughter.” Like, that’s absurd. He’s hanging in there, defending himself, working to get going offensively. He’s NOT taking the scary beating they’re describing. He’s just not. He’s losing. The corner should consider stopping it maybe — if they think it’s the right call. If they see no way to win, yes, the corner should do something if they want to.

Yeah, Jim. How about the fight in front of you? Because you guys stopped talking about that after about three rounds. Guys, it’s not that Caballero isn’t the new Henry Armstrong, it’s that he got BORED in there. Ha ha ha ha! He’s bored in there! It has nothing to do with the fact that Yordan has showed a ton of heart, a lot of resilience, a lot of guts, and a will to keep fighting. It’s that Caballero got bored. And he’s all, “ha ha ha! I’m singing songs! This is just a fun time for me, because I’m Celestino Caballero!”

Quintana with a left to the body. Berto slips according to Tommy Kimmons, and Berto says he was hit behind the head.

Berto firing heavy shots, but not landing any of it. Quintana looks like he’s pissing Berto off already. Berto charges Quintana into the corner, and Berto complains again about being hit behind the head. It’s been goddamned rabbit punch mania since Froch-Dirrell.

Slow opening round without much by way of clean punching. 10 seconds to go, see if someone takes control. Quintana with a sneaky left inside. And again Berto bitches about punches behind the head.

I’m gonna tell you … no. He’s not being hit behind the head.

Left hand by Quintana, now they tie up. Berto’s holding his right arm, Kimmons is bitching at Quintana. Well, Quintana’s here to fight, that’s for sure. Berto’s having some real trouble. Tied up again on the ropes. Quintana holds his arm.

This is an ugly fight. Steward, again, is watching the fight while Lampley wants to find a story and Merchant says nothing. He adds a lot to the broadcast.

45 seconds left in the round. There’s something about the way Quintana is punching that worries me — Berto has the speed to catch him bad like that. But will he?

Berto is pressuring, Quintana is moving away and not letting him do a lot, and I have him up 2-0. It’s a close 2-0, but it’s 2-0.

Berto-Quintana R3

Quintana warned again for hitting behind the head. Berto with a left hook.

I notice a pattern: Steward watches the fight, Lampley waits for Compubox numbers, Merchant says nothing.

Berto complains a lot. Another sharp left by Berto. I think he stunned him a bit with that one. And that’s what I’m talking about. Quintana is just too open to be hit with a guy this fast. Another left by Berto after yet another warning by Kimmons to Quintana.

Berto throwing, but not landing. Crowd comes alive. Quintana nicks him coming in, but nothing substantial. Quintana needs to slow this back down or he’ll get run over. Now Berto complains again, and Kimmons takes a point from Quintana. That one might have actually been deserved, but a lot of this hasn’t been deserved. But that was a real rabbit punch.

Berto-Quintana R4

Berto’s speed is starting to make a difference. Quintana is trying to make this ugly, which will slow it down and give him more chances. Kimmons warns Quintana for holding. For God’s sake.

Berto walks into an illegal punch (well turns away into one) and acts like it’s all Quintana’s fault. Andre should be able to beat this guy straight up. Lots of holding so far. Merchant starts rambling about Burmese pythons.

Berto sticks Quintana in the corner but doesn’t get a lot done once there. Kimmons again instinctively blames Quintana for every ounce of the holding. Quintana lands a little potshot, but the round is Andre’s.

Berto-Quintana R5

Kimmons just keeps getting all over Quintana’s junk. I’m not saying Quintana isn’t making it a bit of a rough fight, but still. Berto staggers Quintana with a right, and now here he comes! Quintana is definitely hurt. Both landed in there, but Berto’s faster and Quintana’s durability seems to be failing him. Quintana hit with a right! Quintana’s about done for. He’s got 30 seconds to survive. But Quintana wisely holds on and tries to get his legs back.

Berto finally warned for anything.

Statement round by Berto. He’s going to finish him off within the next few rounds if he wants to press it.

Berto 10-9
Berto 48-46

This is playing out about how I expected.

Very similar backgrounds

Both amateur middleweights, who took long roads to cut down to welter after going pro. Both with great handspeed. Both with similar limitations. Berto might be a bit better long-term, but the difference is pretty marginal IMO.

Berto-Quintana R6

Quintana doesn’t seem to have a whole lot left in the tank. He’s feeling punches (not that a ton are getting through clean, but when they do), he’s lost the zip he had early (and he didn’t have a ton). He just seems a bit sluggish. He’s not quick by any means, but he looks slower than usual. Berto hitting him clean again with cleaner, harder, quicker shots. Quintana is standing up to it, but he’s getting worn down.

I give this round to Berto on better punches.

Berto-Quintana R7

Quintana lands some good shots, and Kimmons breaks them up. And Merchant, for the first time in a decade, wakes up and takes notice of something. Not quite Merchant on Drakulich in Mayweather-Castillo I, but he’s getting pissed.

Berto with a good right, but the second one that Lampley hard right hands doesn’t land. Merchant debunks it. Steward does too. Lampley continues on because he’s LAMPLEY! He’s totally wrong about that second right hand landing, but hey.

Right by Berto. Quintana is eating things fairly well. Berto’s early career power is looking really overstated in his last three fights. I think his speed might have be a bit overstated, too. Again, not saying he’s not a good fighter, but we’re getting a much clearer picture of Andre Berto, and as nice of a guy as I think he is, we’re seeing the limitations. And Quintana had a good round, IMO. Berto’s flashier, though.

Berto-Quintana R8

It’s seriously like Larry just woke up from hibernation. All of a sudden he’s aware of the fight. Lampley talks up Berto’s win over Miki Rodriguez. C’mon, Jim.

Quintana complaining a lot this round. Who can blame him? It worked for Berto. Now Berto is opening it up and hammering Quintana! THIS IS A CORNER SLAUGHTER NOW! Kimmons sneaks in, but Quintana works out. ANOTHER BIG SHOT LANDS! BERTO CHASING AND HAMMERING AWAY!

Quintana is in bad shape with a minute left. Man, he’s crafty. he hangs on and stops the tide again.

Big right hand again, and Kimmons stops the fight! Great punch.
