It’s sad. Getty Images had a photographer at this fight, but nobody at the far more relevant, far more watched Berto fight.

At least they called him a titlist on Yahoo
And not a champion.

Probably because a boxing photographer lives in Vegas
So there wasn’t any transportation cost. I doubt one lives in Miami, and they didn’t want to fly someone out there for it.

Both used to really be in shape, once upon a time.

But everybody knew what this was about as soon as it was announced. They weren’t showing a lot of pictures of Frans during his ill-advised comeback, or in the run-up to this fight. Actually it is a little shocking to me that they were able to stand Botha up for eight rounds here in 2010.

Very slightly tangentially related
but Evander Kane is an 18-year old NHL rookie who was named after Holyfield by his dad. I think he had a better fight night.
I’m sure his dad made him take boxing lessons too, which is almost unfair in a hockey fight.

This is legal in ice hockey?!

not legal, but they let it go. in the video you would see that Kane got sent to the penalty box after the fight which would imply that yeah you will suffer some sort of consequence for fighting. at the same time you’ll also see the refs lay off the fight until the other dude is KO’d which would imply that fighting is just a part of hockey

Right, you get a penalty, but you don’t get kicked out of the game or anything. Nor does your team have to play shorthanded for any amount of time, since the guy you fought usually gets penalized too.
That's ridiculous

Good point
It just seems massively detrimental to the quality of the gameplay and the meaningfulness of the games if I can stop and uppercut a much better player to the ice, leaving him unable to play.

I dunno
There are many sports that I think could benefit from a good hard uppercut here and there. Golf, bowling and synchronized swimming would all be somewhat watchable if you included a few short, chopping right hooks from time to time.

Leg kicks in soccer
or takedowns in basketball, to add to your list of examples.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
“Injuries” in soccer are hilarious. They get mildly bumped and then hurl themselves to the ground and lie there for a while. Compare what they do to rugby or American Football and it appears laughable that they should give such hystrionics.

I'll go ahead and say it:
the worst offenders are from Latin America, by FAR. Those guys (ALL of them) are absolutely shameless, rolling around acting like their leg is coming off. Then they peek around, see that the game moved forty yards downfield and pop up running full speed.
I sneer acid every time I see it.

You can't just swing on someone without the other guy also dropping the gloves
The end effect is that usually only guys who like fighting fight a lot. The top players rarely get into fights, but if someone does something illegal to a top player, often the “enforcer” will retaliate against that player by picking a fight with him.

But if someone punched someone who wasn't also trying to fight
they’d earn a pretty long suspension without pay.

What’s ironic is that this is the Canadians’ game. Canadians are generally so mild mannered. We Americans are the ones who are supposed to be all violent.
Acceptable outlets, man.
Should be more of them.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
Pretty much
The refs usually let them fight until they fall to the ground. Anyone who jumps in gets penalized worse than the fighters.
Hopkins vs Holyfield
Hopkins vs Holyfield… What more can I say! That would be the ultimate test for Hopkins, he wants a heavyweight contender and there he is. The David Hate fight makes no sense and in my opinion this fight on his resume would look better that half of his previous opponents.
If you always thought what you thought, then you wouldn't think what you knew.
Hopkins vs Holyfield… What more can I say!
Well… I guess you can just keep saying that, a hundred times a day. But if Holy is a heavyweight contender these days, then so are Frans Botha, Shannon Briggs, Jameel McCline and Bruce Seldon. Get Hop in that mix and I smell a very lucrative tournament!

What’s Axel Schultz up to these days? I hear he had a minor stroke a few years back, but that shouldn’t stop him from getting in on this “Senior Six” idea. Winner finally lures Larry Holmes out of retirement for a Caesar’s Palace superfight.

Hey, you've Bogarded my idea....
I suggested a “veteran heavyweight” prizefight a while back…..

Yeah, Haans
What did we ever do to you that you would want to subject us to a 2010 Hopkins vs. Holyfield?

That's Funny1
But honestly, I think it would be a good veteran fight. Two official, Hall of Fame Fighters who still wont let go of the game and actually the fight would serve as a exclamation point and also as a exit of the sport. I agree these guys should be retired but know one will be allowed or can just kick them out after the amount of work that they have contributed to the sport of boxing. Their careers speak for themselves. What do you with a competitor that won’t leave the sport when “WE” as fans say it’s time and they disagree? Answer.. You put the two legends against each other and let them cancel each other out .. That’s all I’m saying. And hopefully after they would consider gracefully bowing out with nothing else to prove.
If you always thought what you thought, then you wouldn't think what you knew.

Realistically, I think Holyfield blasts Hopkins out of there pretty quick.
I respect the hell out of Hopkins, but a heavyweight he ain’t.
He wants to emulate the Jones thing, going up to heavy and winning a title, well…. it’s a bit late, and I’m not sure he’d have managed it anyway.
Holyfield still hits harder than anyone Bernard has ever fought, in my opinion.

I doubt he does it that quick
It took him about 5 rounds to warm up against Botha even, and Holyfield isn’t a huge puncher anymore. Botha ran out of gas as much as anything as the reason for this KO.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

But who has Hopkins faced that hits anywhere near as hard as Holyfield will?

Jones the first time?
Jones was a damn powerful guy.

Jones at 160?
Holyfield is a heavyweight, pal. You do realise he weighs about half again what Jones was weighing, right?

Pavlik is a hard hitter.

And also, Kelly wasn't close to 50 years old
I think you are overestimating Holy’s power somewhat. He was never an especially powerful puncher, and he is old as hell now. Took him eight rounds to TKO Botha.
"My God, kids today think that the laces are for tying up the gloves."

You honestly think Pavlik hits harder than Holyfield?
I’m not arguing, just asking. Seems like a funny statement to make to me. I can only see a 220+lb Holyfield punching harder than a 170lb Pavlik, myself, but I’m open to other opinions….

In fact, I do disagree, if that's what you're saying.
Holyfield took 8 rounds to TKO a big, fat, heavy, old heavyweight. That still takes some power.
Pavlik couldn’t hit Hopkins hard enough to make him respect him, and Hopkins was weighing in about 70lbs lighter than Botha (I’m actually trying to be nice to Botha on this one….).
For me, Holyfield even now hits a fair amount harder than Pavlik.
