Funeka tested positive for illegal substances
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Ali Funeka has tested positive for an illegal diuretic after his bout with Joan Guzman. It's somewhat ironic, as Guzman came in well over weight for the fight. Fuenka will be facing a suspension in Nevada, and will likely need to forfeit part of his purse.

I don’t know if “PED” is the best way to describe this without any context, Brick. The diuretic could have simply been used to help him boil down his weight. Not all banned substances “enhance performance,” some are shortcuts to making weight.
I figure you are just going to accuse me of using semantics, but I actually think the discussion of PEDs is much too vague right now, with people using generalizations to confuse matters. Being specific is part of fighting the beast.

This is a fair point.
In some other sports, the reason why diuretics are banned is that they are often used to avoid detection of other PEDs. If someone tests positive for a diuretic in football, you can probably assume they used it to mask something else, seeing as how you don’t have to make weight in football.
Of course, in boxing, you do need to make weight, so you can’t assume it was used to mask a PED. It’s still illegal, of course, but doesn’t look quite as bad.
Don’t diuretics also make you dangerously dehydrated if taken along with a stringent workout regimen?

Wait so since Guzman forfeited his purse too, where does all of the money from the fight go? Sanctioning bodies?
To the NSAC

It would be changed to a NC most likely, so yes.

so one guy tried his hardest to lose the weight and eventually resulted to cheating to do so, while the guy basically cheated and didn’t even bother to lose the weight? what a mess…

That was a good and meaningful fight.

What was?
Funeka-Guzman II? Guzman took away all the meaning of that fight when he came in cheating. And now, for Funeka, this…
haha
so if funeka would have actually won the fight he probably would have been stripped of the belt and the fight called a no contest.
its just not meant to be, ali

Not at 135.
He could still probably be quite handy at 140. Not like #1-4 handy, but almost certainly top-10.

He could make some interesting fights there
But he probably stood a better chance of being good in the much weaker lightweight division.

Usually they let the decision stand if both guys were sanctioned
See, e.g., Toney-Batchelder, which is still a win because both guys flunked their drug tests.

But he wouldn't have been able to keep the belt.
