Wladimir can see the real $$$ now.

Somehow Haye does it so much better…

Let’s hope the Valuev rematch can be avoided. Just hope he’s realistic in the payoff demand.

by strike4A on Apr 13, 2010 11:12 AM EDT reply actions

Haye demanding 50-50 is already unrealistic.

If a man ain't found something worth dying for. He ain't fit to live.

by Violent Demise on Apr 13, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a starting point

Whatshisname over in the UK reported that he hears Klitschko is demanding 80-20. They’ll meet somewhere in the middle.

Here’s what makes most sense to me:
- Haye gets 100% of UK revenue
- Klitschko gets 100% of German/Russian/Ukraine TV revenue
- US revenue gets split 50/50 (since it’s obvious HBO won’t buy Wlad’s fights anymore)
- Everything else gets split 65/35 in favor of Wlad

If they do it that way, Haye should still end up with a $10+ million payday, possibly double that. This fight would do a million buys in the UK.

I would give Wlad 60-40 maybe 70-30 of the US revenue based on the fact that he’s the recognized Heavyweight champion, has actually fought on HBO before and has (both brothers) a pretty good following out here in Los Angeles. Which is more of a following than Haye would enjoy in any US city. Everything else you proposed I agree with it.

2 things I find unrealistic from both sides and should’’t be agreed on are

1, Options on Haye. If Haye wins he either faces Vitali or rematches Wlad next. That’s it. He shouldn’t have to do both. It’s either one or the other

2, Haye’s moronic demand for the brothers to face each other prior to him facing one. That’s unrealistic and will pretty much kill any chance of him facing either if brought up.

If a man ain't found something worth dying for. He ain't fit to live.

by Violent Demise on Apr 13, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Haye’s moronic demand for the brothers to face each other prior to him facing one.

I think if that became a serious sticking point in the negotiations, Haye would be laughed out of the sport. Then you could truly say he was just straight up ducking Wlad… “Punch your mother in the mouth or I won’t fight you.”

Agreed on both points

Besides, if Haye wins, he’s going to WANT to face Vitali anyway. It would still be by far the biggest money and biggest glory fight available. They just shouldn’t be setting the terms of future fights now.

You know what,

Wlad has fallen out of favor on HBO. Haye adds the excitement factor.

This, to me, is one of those times that the more established fighter doesn’t sweat the cut to death. Wlad won’t be hurting for money any time in the next century anyway.

by Don From Prov on Apr 14, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually reckon HBO would buy this one

But probably not for very much. Realistically both these guys can s8 figures any American money which is quite remarkable.

Yes,

I think HBO would buy Haye/Wlad, and a lot of that would be based on the perception of what Haye would bring to the fight, how he might = fireworks.

That’s why I don’t think Wlad should sweat what the cut is all too tough.
If he has a money and attention-grabbing fight out there, Haye is the one.

Listening to Wlad say the words “bitched out” is bizarre. It’s so obvious that this is the first time he’s probably ever used the term in his life. They probably had to teach it to him phonetically, like when Lugosi played Dracula. Sounds very unnatural coming out of him.

I hear you, but you have to admit it’s an odd scenario. Two brothers who are fighter-promoters and own almost all the major belts (or all of them, if you no longer count the WBA, or consider Wlad to be it’s actual champion due to the Chageav bout). I mean, it doesn’t seem realistic that they would adandon up their strong negotiating position and maybe screw themselves out of future paychecks. It’s pay- to-play.

Then we could have a “You killed my brother!!” moment (although I’m not actually hoping, or predicting, that Vitali dies….) when Wlad and Haye finally get it on.

I think right now-
Haye TKO-5 Vitali
Wlad TKO-6 Haye

well a fight with older brother to set this up would be cool

But I reckon that this one would be far more entertaining to watch as I see a much higher liklihood of a KO happening at any moment.

It could happen. I imagine that the Vitali sees it, he only has a few fights left before he hands his half of the keys to Wlad. He wants a big, memorable fight to go out on. Solis is too unknown and green (while, at least at the pro level) and a staring contest with someone like Toney wouldn’t cut it. He wants the chance to take one last young, fresh, popular fighter to the woodshed on his way out the door.

Wladimir potentially sees it that way too

There is no real reason for him to stay boxing much longer. He’s got a lot of money and, if he beats Haye, will have beaten pretty much everybody. Brother excluded of course.

He also hasn’t taken a lot of punishment in his career and may wish to keep it that way and not risk losing any mental capacity as he gets older and gets hit more, being a PhD holding, bi-lingual chess player this is concievable.

If he does three and a half more years, fighting and winning at his current pace, he will surpass Holmes’ record. If he fights until he’s 39, he could conceivably pass Louis. There wouldn’t be much left to argue against then unless you were full of sour grapes. Longevity at the top is a feat all its own.

by jrok on Apr 13, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought about the defense streak

But I doubt it’s feasible. To get there, he’d need to fight three times a year for another 4+ years and win all of them to get there. Now that he’s starting to have injury problems, I doubt he can keep up that kind of schedule, and I’m not sure there are enough viable contenders to keep that schedule even if he wanted to. He’d need to start facing a lot of Sosnowski types.

Well, I mean it’s not like Larry didn’t fight a lot of “Sosnowski types” during his run. And Wlad has basically been fighting three times a year for awhile now, and seems in shape to fight more. But you’re right, he’d have to fight and win for at least four more years to pass Holmes. It is surely possible, though. He’d need to defend eleven more times, I think. I have a feeling he will try.

Considering only germany want to watch any of wlads fights now, fighting haye and splitting it 50/50 will still get him more money than he’ll get fighting anyone else probably. If Wlad wants to fight haye as bad as it seems in this video theres a good chance he could give him 50/50.

Haye’s fights are not limited to the UK. If HBO or Show Time wanted to they could of paid to televised Haye’s fights against Valuve or Ruiz. They didn’t. Haye really isn’t the big draw people are trying to make it seem like he is

Haye is a draw

He sold 18,000 tickets for people to see John Ruiz. He got nearly a million buys in the UK to fight Nicolai Valuev. Neither of those guys is a draw in the UK, and they’re both generally deathly boring to watch. No word on how many buys Haye-Ruiz did, but ’d bet that was at least in the mid-six figures as well.

Does he draw outside of the UK? Not really, but that’s why the deal could still work out for him even if he gets the short end as long as he gets to keep UK revenues, and a fight between Wladimir and Haye would generate significantly more international income than a fight between Wladimir and anyone else who isn’t his brother.

HBO was psyched on that fight last year and every time they talk about heavyweights they bring up David Haye, which is rare for them when you consider that he’s never fought on their channel. They want that fight. I think that or Haye-Arreola / Haye-Adamek is about all they want.

However he is an undeniably big name here in the UK, especially in London. Although his fanbase is not as strong, at least in terms of hardcore fans, he is actually becoming as popular as Hatton, maybe even more so.
That is a bold statement, and I can’t really be sure, but he is getting huge here. And his exposure to the mainstream is increasing all the time, meaning he will only get bigger.

True

However, HBO pretty much hate ruiz and i dont think they’ve bought any of valuev’s fights so its not a surprise they didnt buy either fight. Plus they don’t want to buy any of the klitschko’s fights anymore unless its against haye. Haye also has a belt to put on the line and it will be a meaningful fight, if wlad doesn’t give haye 50/50 then he can’t say haye is bitching out by not fighting him.

by Xray89 on Apr 13, 2010 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

People are going over board by trying to use HBO not buying any of Wlad’s recent fights against him. Cuz last time I checked HBO hadn’t bought any of Haye’s fights either. And believe me if Haye was as popular as his groupies claim he is they would of. Yes I understand Haye has a title in his possession. But anybody that follows Boxing knows it’s nothing but a paper title. Wlad would already of had that title if it wasn’t stupidly stripped from Ruslan Chagaev. It should no way help Haye in negotiations. 50-50 is unrealistic. 70-30 is more than fair. If not Wlad can say Haye bitched out. Cuz he already did once before

If a man ain't found something worth dying for. He ain't fit to live.

by Violent Demise on Apr 13, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I do think of Wlad as the real WBA “champion,” because of the dumbass nonsense of the Chagaev-Valuev-Wlad-Haye situation. Those crafty WBA wizards were sanctioning both Chagaev and Valuev as champions, until they could set a rematch for the title Chagaev already won. Then the rematch mysteriously melts down because they chose to fight in a country that won’t sign off on Hepititus carriers (which everyone already knew Ruslan was). Then Haye comes down with a mysterious back ailment. Wlad invites Valuev (WBA champ) to replace Haye and gets turned down flat, as usual. Wlad offers Chagaev (WBA recess champ) the same fight and stomps him flat, but only after the WBA stripped Chagaev for not fighting Johnny Blowjob instead (another fight they would have sanctioned as a title fight.) Three Stooges levels of comedy in that mess.

Anyway, it’s fair to say that’s Wlad’s belt that David is wearing. The rest of it is just Wrestling-style fantasy stuff and marketing for the fight, but Wlad is the true owner of that ridiculous strap.

Wlad did an interview on On the Ropes not so long ago that wasn’t too bad when he is talking about the Chambers. Except for the long stretch where he talks about Manny Steward. SNORE! You do get the sense that Wlad really is a Boxing Guy. He’s going to the hall, he knows it, and it’s still not good enough for him. However, aside from the Chambers fight description or some of the talk about Golden Gloves, you need to keep your No-Doze handy.

But what Wlad says about Chambers (and about two guys being necessary to make a fight exciting) is largely true. Chambers can, or could have, beat many or all of the top tenners in the list right now on boxing ability alone, and he didn’t have a prayer against Wlad. It’s why the division is so dull. It really is a one man division. I hope Haye can be a guy to put up a good challenge, but I have my doubts. Otherwise, he can just coast for a few years.

One quote I liked about Valuev-Haye: “Big freak, slow as elephant, and David Haye danced around trying not to get hit.”

And he uses the phrase "bitching out" twice in the interview

Maybe he is getting used to it.

He basically calls Povetkin a bitch too. He’s not so off. Alex has been stalling for awhile now. Its true that there are some guys out there who have made excuses to NOT fight for Wlad’s title… that’s simply true.

I doubt Klitschko cares much about the hall

Hall of Fame is a very American concept.

No, Wlad cares. If you listen to the Jenna J interview I linked to, he’s a little pissed that HBO won’t buy his fights. He doesn’t care about the U.S. audience as much as his brother (he also talks about meeting Max Schelling, for instance) but he is U.S. trained and he certainly believes that America is the Mecca of Boxing. He cares about history for sure. I have no doubt about that. He is a boxing guy and cares about his legacy, and about his place in the Hall for sure.

And besides which Canastota is not an “American concept.” Come on now.

I didn't say Canastota is an american concept

I said hall of fame is an American concept. You don’t see many halls of fame outside of the US. There are a few in Japan, where the concept carried over because of baseball, but having a museum that has all of the best of something in one place is something that only Americans do, generally.

or at least care about

Boxing is different

It’s an international sport. Other sports are generally only "international" at the amateur level (soccer being an obvious exception).

It’s a little strange to think that the Klitschkos don’t care about their place in history, in my opinion… they pretty obviously seem to care from the interviews I have heard with them.

FWIW, there is a “soccer” hall of fame, but it’s in the US.

My extensive research (on wikipedia) has uncovered only one football hall of fame in Europe, the “Gwladys Street Hall of Fame” in England. But it appears that that’s only for footballers who played for Everton F.C.

On the other hand, it seems that there are lots of halls of fame in Australia, which as we all know is part of Europe.

Elephants are actually pretty quick if you get them angry. Which is apparently easy to do, as they are very surly animals.

I like this from Wlad he didn’t go over board with the whole grudge match thing. He doesn’t like Haye but he aint saying he hates him or that “this time its personal”.

He did say it’s “personal” in the On the Ropes interview. That is, he said Vitali wanted to fight Haye first because that would balance out the belts 2-2. But Wlad persuaded Vitali to let him fight Haye first instead because it’s personal.

At least its not the Oscar version of its personal

Wlad has a bit more to say about Haye in sunny L.A:

Looks like “bitched out” is on the permanent menu now. He says it, like, twenty times.

He's a funny guy

His pizza analogies are classic.

He is a goofy sunuvabitch, but he is beginning to grow on me. Like a fungus.

If this fight gets made I might have to switch back to my original BLH signature in honor of it…

I would love to see Wlad go beserk on Haye….nothing against Haye, but really, see Wlad Lacy-fy Haye. It might do Haye some good in the long run.

Brain damage is good in the long run?

Na, I agree that it would go some way towards making Haye more respectful and even a touch humble.
