CANADIAN BOXING - Flashbacks and Current Events: By Brian W. Zelley

As I flash back to the past, there have been many interesting moments in Canadian amateur and professional boxing, from an interesting cast of characters to the now anticipation of the 2010 BC GOLDEN GLOVES that will take place on April 16 and 17th. in Langford (Greater Victoria) with the appearance of Canadian boxing legend GEORGE CHUVALO.

Thinking about past boxers includes a wealth of information and names such as the world champions such as JIMMY MCLARNIN, or some of the early Golden Gloves boxers from BC such as KENNY LINDSAY, VIC MURDOCK,, LEN WALTERS, and many more including boxers of the Sixties such as FRANK SCOTT FREDDY FULLER, and DICK FINDLAY.

We can look back and remember some of our boxers that participated in the Olympics, Pan Am Games and/or the British Empire/Commonwealth Games such as EDDIE HADDAD, HAROLD MANN, LENNOX LEWIS, SCOTTY OLSON and DONNIE ORR and many more.

Looking back, one can see the past and present clubs in action from Campbell River to places like Halifax or Kingston. Some clubs that are gone had a rich history of excellence such as the Northwest Eagles in North Vancouver to the London Boxing Club and Victoria Athletic Association in Victoria. Then there are old clubs that are continuing to operate such as the Spruce Capital Warriors and the West Edmonton Knights.

In amateur boxing, we have two time periods - the years leading up to 1968 and the 1969 onward years.. There is much information available on the post-1968 years, but many of the pre-1969 stories have faded into the ashes of history never to be told. As a story teller, I hope o tell some of the stories from the Sixties and earlier.Boxing - moments in time
