Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Pavlik-Martinez Undercard

Welterweight Mike Jones is back in action tonight in Atlantic City.

TopRank.com will be streaming four fights from the off-HBO undercard in Atlantic City, starting at 6:55pm EDT, and we'll be here to watch and discuss all the action, making for a full night of boxing here at Bad Left Hook.

This post will be for the off-HBO undercard only. After that, we'll move over to the main post for Pavlik-Martinez and Bute-Miranda, starting live on HBO at 10pm EDT.

Here's what we'll see on the Top Rank Livestream:

  • Welterweights: Mike Jones (20-0, 16 KO) v. Hector Munoz (18-2-1, 11 KO). If Jones wins and doesn't get hurt or cut, he'll be in the co-feature fight on HBO on June 12, when Yuri Foreman and Miguel Cotto battle at Yankee Stadium.
  • Middleweights: Ronald Hearns (24-1, 18 KO) v. Delray Raines (17-7-1, 12 KO). Hearns, 31, got into boxing really late in life, despite his father being Tommy Hearns. He's one of those guys who doesn't have "it," but unlike a lot of children of great boxers, he also works really hard and comes to fight. This could be a pretty exciting fight.
  • Heavyweights: Dominick Guinn (32-6-1, 21 KO) v. Terrell Nelson (8-9, 5 KO). Pretty much a nothing fight for Guinn. I won't even call this a "stay busy fight." Guinn's last four fights have seen him get his career back on some sort of track, after his prospect bubble burst and it turned out he was not, in fact, the next big thing in American heavyweight boxing. There's still a chance Guinn could get a title shot, I suppose, but at 34 it's getting close to now or never.
  • Middleweights: Matt Korobov (10-0, 8 KO) v. Joshua Snyder (8-4-1, 3 KO). I know he's only had ten pro fights, but Korobov is 27. It's time to at least fight a decent gatekeeper. He's too polished and too good for fights like this to teach him anything anymore.

they're prepping the cameras now

For what it’s worth, there’s three swing bouts on the schedule, so if these ones end early, you could get to see bonus. Guinn will be up first, according to the schedule out front.

What's a guy like Guinn

with over 30 wins doing fighting a dude that’s 8-9?

by Bad Mamajama on Apr 17, 2010 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

It’s a nothing fight. But Guinn’s little winning streak (four in a row) has other promoters less inclined to book him as a pure opponent, so he’s gotta fight someone. He’s stuck in no man’s land right now — maybe too dangerous for untested guys, but not credible enough for a major fight.

Nelson's tits bouncing around is kind of creepy

Guinn should be blasting this guy out. Instead he’s content to throw 20 punches a round. Nelson has no business winning any rounds from Guinn. I already gave him the second, and now there’s an argument that he won the 4th.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."

by Brickhaus on Apr 17, 2010 7:09 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

you can argue it

So far I’ve got 10-8 Guinn (from what I gathered, the first two minutes I missed were all Guinn), 10-9 Nelson, 10-9 Guinn, 10-9 Nelson.

So 38-37 for Guinn through four. Which is absurd.

Was Guinn like this before his first loss? His first loss was to a pre-shot Monte Barrett in 2004. He had beaten few solid guys, if no worldbeaters, before then. Did he just mentally collapse after his first loss, or what?

by schraubd on Apr 17, 2010 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

He started getting lazier and lazier, IMO, and then because of it more and more easily picked apart. I don’t think he dealt with losing well, and I don’t know that he dealt with expectations well to begin with. He’s not untalented. He’s just weird.

Munoz strikes me as a Punch-Out!!! character. He doesn’t only make noise when he punches, he makes noise when he’s being damaged. If he flashed red before throwing a punch, it wouldn’t surprise me much.

Artie Pellulo is one of the best local promoters in the world, but he was having a really tough time getting Jones any fights with any kind of profile.

by El Destruyo on Apr 17, 2010 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

I always wonder how fighters deal with stuff like that. “You the new champion!” He knows the belts don’t matter. I mean he has to know. And there has to be part of him saying inside, “This is not what a welterweight championship fight feels like.” Buried under Matt Korobov off TV on a Kelly Pavlik card in AC.

Do we prefer Jones versus Antwone Smith, or Jones versus Luis Carlos Abregu? I heard those were the two options HBO was putting on the table.

Smith, but I’d take either gladly.

It'd be nice to see Smith get his shot

That being said, I think Jones is simply too good for him.

by schraubd on Apr 17, 2010 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

i think Jones kills either of them

But the Abregu fight has the potential to be a war for a few rounds. Plus, I like Smith, and I don’t want to see him get destroyed. He needs another smaller step up first.

He’s having a lot of trouble landing clean on this guy just because he’s slightly slick.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."

by Brickhaus on Apr 17, 2010 9:33 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Korobov 30-27

He’s winning rounds, but he hasn’t landed a good, hard clean shot yet. A few decent body shots, but he’s been headhunting too much.

I mean, I guess the opponent is okay defensively, but he’s 8-4 and looks like mullet man when he tries to throw a punch.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

Korobov looks completely winded by the end of the 5th

And the opponent was taking advantage. He seems to have his legs back now though. VERY underwhelming performance by Korobov, and a pretty boring fight.

Korobov finally landed a good exchange

Knocked out the other guy’s mouthpiece, but after restarting, the other guy was able to pop korobov with some solid shots. Korobov probably won 60_54 or 59-55, but Bob Arum will probably be happy that the stream died.

Now it's over

But nothing much different from what I previously noted. Korobov landed a few better shots, but didn’t follow up on them well, mostly would just push the other guy away after.

79-73
78-74
78-74

All for Matt Korobov. Crowd boos the decision.

Tapia with a nice knockdown in round 2

About a minute later, got Winchester caught on the ropes and went to town on him. Ref almst stopped it but didn"t. Then Winchester cracks Tapia with a shot that b uzzes him!

I have no idea if Tapia is going to actually be any good, but I love this kid and I can see him becoming an attraction. He reminds me of Gatti.

damn this is a war

This is the best fight of the card so far. At the end of the third, Tapia and Winchester got into a shoving match after the bell. No love lost between these two.

A lot of taunting, trading in close range, Winchester getting hurt but then firing right back. Every time it seems like Tapia has Winchester in trouble, Winchester fires back with a six or seven punch combo. Fun stuff.
