Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

On the bright side, this is Arreola's lowest weight since fighting Chazz Witherspoon two years ago. On the not as bright side, it's still a far cry from the 225 - 235 range where he looked his best.

He's never going to be great

But he could be a lot better than he is if he put in some decent conditioning work.

exactly i mean if the guy thew in a salad here and there he could atleast be a contender

if not atleast a fan fav i think he just needs to get out of a comfort zone and maybe hire a real trainer.

He definitely needs to do that

His trainer’s as fat as he is, FWIW.

ya the trainer is like his brother or something its crazy

i seen and interview where they were saying that basically he was running the show if he didnt want to train then they wouldent push him . i think the guy just needs to get a real trainer and a diet guy . bottom line though it comes down to his heart . which i can see how he fights he has all the heart during the fight just doesnt have the stamina or the skill . this guy is just a back yard brawler who is probably happy just collecting a check .

He has skills, he’s just gradually let them erode. At this point he’s little more than a brawler. But I don’t think he’s just collecting paychecks, either. I do think he cares and wants to be a guy fans can go to for good fights, which honestly he is. I think he’s — and I hate saying this, because Arreola’s not a bad guy or anything so far as I know — painfully unaware of the work you have to put in to be great.

He used to be one of Toney's main sparring partners

Which always made me a bit afraid he’s pick up Toney’s bad habits. And he has.

At one point I thought he could be a supersized version of Juan Diaz

But it’s obvious he just doesn’t put in the work. Not only in conditioning, but also in actually learning how to fight. He still doesn’t move his head and he still doesn’t know how to clinch. And the one good thing about him as a prospect, his aggressive workrate, has really tempered down as he’s moved up in class. I’m still stupidly picking Arreola to win in the points game, but that’s mostly a function of the way Adamek faded in his last fight.

juan diaz is really falling apart right now

i could be wrong but is this guy just a case where he has been cruising threw weak fights threw out the years and now just being exposed by good fighters.

I don’t see much of a factual basis for that statement.

He fought a great fight against Marquez despite losing it – that’s why it was Fight of the Year. He crushed Michael Katsidis, who is a good fighter. People are just down on Diaz because he lost to Malignaggi, but Malignaggi is a lot bigger than Diaz is.

by taco pal on Apr 22, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s also fairly easy to argue Diaz DID deserve to win the first fight (the Van Hoy card turned into “Paulie wuz robbed!” way too easily), and Paulie also fought the best he had in a long time in both fights.

I’ve got to the point where I just can’t stand Arreola anymore. He isn’t “unaware.” Don’t play that bullshit naivety card. Everyone tells him constantly and he was humbled recently. He disrespects the sport and the event. He disrespects paying customers who want to see him fight by not showing up in even decent condition. He’s a joke.

I hope Adamek destroys him, but I don’t see it happening.

No, “haters” say things. Nobody in his camp tells him anything as best I can tell.

OK, calm down. I don’t even disagree with you. When did I give Arreola a free pass? By saying he’s too indifferent and lazy to understand he has to work harder if he wants to be better than he is?

I dont see Adamek being able to hold off Arreola. I think Arreola’s weight will sort of help him in this fight but he didnt need to come in to heavy. If Adamek cant back up or hurt Arreola early, Chris will walk through and bomb away.

I think Adamek can cut him if he hits him flush early and often…. Arreola doesn’t exactly have the greatest chin…

Adamek has a legendary chin but he can’t get hit flush because there is a huge difference taking a punch at 168,175 and 200… and then at 250…

Arreola has been hit by bigger punchers and heavier guys

Mosley - UD on 1st May

by sigidy on Apr 22, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure that this isn't the heaviest puncher he's faced after Travis Walker

who has a shit chin and managed to knock Arreola down. Vitali throws arm punches at this point in his career, and Chazz, McCline and Walker all hurt Arreola, but Vitali didn’t. But Adamek has a a better beard than Walker or Witherspoon, and McCline just flat didn’t show up for the Arreola fight. I’m rooting hard for Adamek, but I still have Arreola winning by late KO, but if his endurance is a little better than it was against Estrada, he can win by decision, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he TKOs Arreola either.

I admire Arreola’s heart , he’s a spirited fighter but a technically flawed one, Adamek should expose that. Minto was able to tag Chris early and I see the big fella walking onto Adamek’s superior punches and getting busted up in the process.

If Thomas uses his mobility and jab he should be able to outbox Arreola . If Arreola is 6 ft 4 then Im blind .

Who Cares About Arreola's Weight ?

He is what he is and I’m a fan just the way he is fat ornot !!! Even a fat Arreola should be too much for Adamek to handle although if Chris is really out of shape and gases too early Adamek could win a UD.That said I have Arreola in this one.He should be able to push Thomas around given his advantage in weight.

It's not a matter of "IF" the North will break you. It's a matter of "WHEN" the North will break you.For up here every year counts as two on the outside.

I mean, it’s not just Chris’s weight. That’s just a number. It’s just an indicator of how hard he trains (or rather, how hard he doesn’t train). We’ve all heard the rumblings about him cutting short runs and pads, skipping workouts, drinking beer, taking it easy. It’s just obvious that he isn’t training to win that highest level. Worse, I think the loss to Vitali stole some of that confidence that is so important. He really got beaten so easily and ugly that it could have him second guessing himself. It is a big opportunity for Adamek, who I think takes the game a little more seriously than Arreola right now, almost certainly trained better, and may have the mental edge.

Training Camp

Puhleeze, take Chris away to camp, maybe to Ali’s old camp in Pa. or Buddy McGirts in Vero Beach Fl. anywhere that he is NOT comfortable with his surrondings. Camp is for preparing for a fight,…hard work….sacrifice, hunger for that victory, not for your favorite foods and beverages. I’m a fan of Chris’ come to fight, never say die attitude ON fight nite, prior to that not so much. C’mon Chris just give yourself a chance to fight to your potential, go to a spartan camp where the sole focus is getting ready for a fight. Give yourself a chance to be the best that Christobal Arreola can be,…YOU won’t regret what coulda’ been a few years from now. Peace!!

by Iron Beach on Apr 23, 2010 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with this but I want to take it a little further. Arreola need to be far away from anything that could be a temptation. He needs to train in Siberia or ‘Heart of Darkness’ Africa, somewhere that’s far away from temptation and where he has no choice but to focus and train. If he can do this, or his trainer can get him to do this, he could be a great force in the HW. He has (maybe had) all the tools to beat the bros K, but he needs to focus on boxing and not food/beer.

by Waldo Rastel on Apr 23, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

As it turned out, there were a lot of temptations in Heart of Darkness – that was the premise of the story.
