Really pumped for this fight. It’ll be an interesting matchup, because Adamek will try to outbox Cris, but Cris can end it at anytime with one shot. I’ll take Cris by KO-10.

I'm barely interested in this at all

HW is such a bore that I just can’t get interested…whoever wins is not a really a HW contender anyway.

The winner is definitely a contender

Just unlikely to actually beat a Klitschko.

If Adamek wins this, he’s arguably a top 10 pound for pound fighter.

Somewhat OT

But my girlfriend has been watching fights with me for about 5 or 6 years now and has somewhat gotten into the sport. Anyway, we were talking a little boxing yesterday, and her favorite fight that she’s seen? Adamek-Briggs II. Found that one interesting. It was a really good fight, underrated, just surprised she thought that was better than the Vazquez-Marquez fights or JMM-Diaz or whatever.

It's a great show

Just tough to watch. I followed the first couple seasons, but then when I tried to pick it back up a few seasons later, I found myself lost just because it had changed so much.

Also falling into that category of ‘great show but tough to watch and you need to see every episode for it to work’ is Breaking Bad.

You know what my favorite thing about the Angulo/Shaw whining this week is? “Oh he gave up his OWN Boxing After Dark to be on this one. :(”

I will guarantee more people watch this than would have watched an Angulo-headlined BAD. He’s still going to be seen by more eyes. Are these people really so fragile that they think headlining a show nobody really watches is more important than being the co-feature on one people WILL watch?

Angulo-Julio R1

Julio seems…spritely before the bell. They’re both snapping jabs to start. Angulo going to the body and the head. Nice jab by Julio. Body jab by Angulo. Right upstairs by Angulo lands. Left hook from Julio sneaks in. They’re both throwing with intent early.

Big right by Julio. Right by Angulo is blocked. Angulo pressing like he always does. Left hook by Angulo inside. Left hook Julio as they mix inside again. These guys are here to fight. Julio’s moving around the ring plenty, but both want to hurt their opponent. I don’t think anyone’s looking for a decision in this one.

Julio is doing a good job not getting trapped, but he’s being stalked very effectively.

Angulo 10-9

Angulo-Julio R2

There’s not much about this that I didn’t see coming. Julio looks spirited early, not winning the fight but trying to stand his ground, but it’s Angulo whose pressure looks like it’s taking over. It feels like a waiting game for Angulo to start busting him up when eventually Julio DOES get trapped in the corner. Right from Angulo lands. Julio throws, comes up short down the pipe and is blocked wide. Julio’s movement is sort of effective, and he’s landing some shots, but the best punches are Angulo’s, and the pace being pressed is Angulo’s.

Angulo-Julio R3

Stiff left hook by Julio, as he looks to build on what he did well last round, which everyone but me scored for Julio. I thought it was close, but I like Angulo’s effective pressure. Julio is looking to crack him this round for sure. Hook to the body by Angulo, then he clips him on the chin after another body shot. They’re firing heavy shots back and forth. This is a good fight already.

Hard left hook by Julio, and then he does some more work. Angulo using the body and the head to attack. Julio might actually be building some momentum for serious, and I’ll cautiously agree this is the best Joel has looked in years. I’m worried the movement will wear him out and leave him vulnerable to Angulo’s attacks, but this was a good round for Julio again.

Julio starting to stick and move. This really is looking more like the Cintron fight by the round. He’s boxing more and not giving Angulo much to work with in this round, though Angulo as always is pressing. Julio takes a hard left. There’s a right from Angulo. Angulo finds a brief rhythm, but Julio starts moving again.

Nice combination punching by Joel Julio as this round gets near its end. Tighter round than the third, but I favor Joel slightly.

Holy shit, Angulo has the “R” from a Corona sign on the turnbuckle stuck to his back. Classic.

Angulo is really having trouble getting going. He’s landing hard now and again, but Julio has just taken this fight by the horns overall. He’s shown an ability to take Angulo’s shots too. And there they trade, and they both show their chins for the masses. Angulo is REALLY pressing now. He’s been in this spot before — he has to get this fight turned around or if Julio is physically prepared to do this for 12 rounds, he cannot beat Joel Julio at this game any more than he could beat Cintron. Angulo throwing HARD shots.

Angulo-Julio R6

Now the “O” is on Angulo’s back. Part of the C is missing too. This is great stuff.

Someone just got thrown out of the arena.

Anyway, the fight. Angulo targeting the body, trying to take Julio’s legs from him. I think he’s showing more ring smarts than he had before he lost to Cintron — that’s a good thing to see. He’s never going to be fast, but he can get smarter, and I think he has. Julio with a nice left hook that snaps Angulo’s jaw around.

Another tight round with a minute left. Right by Angulo, Julio fires back. Combination Julio, mostly blocked, but Angulo lands a shot in return. STIFF right by Angulo. Jesus, these guys are getting good shots in, and Angulo’s heavy bombs are starting to land a lot more. Good round for Angulo, I think, and he finishes it well.

You know what? I’m changing my second round score. I didn’t like it right after I hit enter and I think it’s pretty obvious I was just wrong. I’m not a sanctioned official. I’m on a blog. Who cares? So 57-57.

Angulo goes low on a left, but Julio doesn’t make a stink and the action carries on. Angulo really giving chase now, and Julio really starting to run more than fight. Body shot by Julio lands. Julio really doesn’t seem to want anything to do with mixing it up this round. He’s looking to land some counters if he can, but he’s not wild about Angulo throwing punches. Julio lands some shots though. This is the toughest round of the fight to score with 45 seconds left. Julio has landed some good shots, but he’s really trying to stay away from Angulo more than ever this round.

I gotta score it for Julio. I don’t love how he fought that round, but it was smart and effective, at least for now. That much movement might have not been good for the rest of the fight.

Angulo-Julio R8

Hurrld went with Angulo. We seem split on it here. Toughest round of the fight to score, IMO.

Julio lets a ton of shots go, Angulo covers up, eats it, and then smiles and waves him in for more. Angulo slips southpaw here and there, and seems to do OK from that stance. Angulo seems willing to eat shots this round for some reason. Now with half the round left, he’s starting to throw while he stalks.

Right hand Angulo lands, and then another, and Julio seemed a bit surprised that he was caught a few times. Julio tries to get out of there. Wicked combination from Angulo, but doesn’t land flush on any of it. It looked nasty, though, and that is sometimes what matters.

The last two rounds Julio just has not done much offensively. He’s throwing enough so that he doesn’t appear to be a “runner,” but I like Angulo in this one.

Now he’s got the other “O.”

Angulo starting to do some good work to the body, but there he’s whacked with a wide left hook. Angulo is dictating pace more and more. Julio is cut and the blood is bothering him a bit. But Julio is still fighting, too. Angulo really pressing as he seems to notice that cut and how much it’s bugging Julio. Julio finally shoots that right uppercut his corner’s been asking for. Angulo with a right. Julio chops him with one moments later.

Arreola can’t land on Adamek early, and seems a little frustrated. Adamek with a combo, Arreola digs to the body. Adamek with a left hook, then back out. Adamek with a hard left hook in there, but he’s being affected by the shots Arreola is landing for sure.

Adamek with a combination, then Arreola misses badly on a wild right hand, gets hit just after the bell, and gives a staredown. Adamek apologizes.

Adamek is really controlling this fight with lefts and rights, and the crowd gets crazy every time someone lands. Adamek’s fans are loud, Arreola’s fans are loud. 5,000 fans and they’re here to watch a fight. At least there’s that.

Arreola is having a tough time landing big and clean shots. He seems like he wants to load up a lot, like he’s too anxious to get a knockout. He throws a nice 1-2 there and it works for him. Now he’s starting to push Adamek around with his size. Arreola now willing to get hit to land, which is the best option he has it would appear.

Adamek is very weary of Arreola’s power. He’s no fool. He’s fighting bravely and smart at the same time. I think he takes this round, too, but this is no clinic or anything. It’s a time bomb fight.

Arreola’s facial expressions are … odd. I don’t know what it is. He looks sad almost.

Adamek just popping him at will when he wants to, it seems. Arreola is more and more frustrated. He’s definitely got the power to turn this fight on a dime, but Adamek is tearing into him, moving effectively, and neutralizing what Arreola does. He’s getting cut up by Adamek, too. CompuBox has Arreola landing 0 power punches, then there’s a couple. (This round I mean.)

Arreola digging to the body, and Adamek felt that left hook. Arreola finished the round with some real spirit, but it’s Adamek’s again.

Arreola-Adamek R4

Adamek is landing 52% of his power punches. I’m tempted to bring up the +/- argument that jrok and I had, but I won’t. Oh I did I suppose. This tells me again that when Arreola fights guys who aren’t bums or walking shells of their former selves, he’s going to get smacked around hard. He might win this at any time, but he’s getting hammered overall.

Speaking of which, Arreola’s big shots are now getting there, and Adamek is without a doubt feeling the power. There’s a right by Adamek. I don’t know that Adamek can really hurt Arreola. I mean, I’m sure he CAN, but I don’t know if the way he’s fighting will enable him to do so.

Big right by Adamek, and another. Arreola looks anxious to fight like that, but Adamek is largely doing a good job hitting and getting out. This has been the tightest round of the fight, IMO, but still going Adamek’s way with 20 seconds left.

Adamek again landing and moving, making Arreola miss. Body shot by Arreola. Adamek’s legs, as Lennox says, are “all over the place.” He ain’t lyin’.

But I’m really impressed by how Adamek fought the last two minutes of the round. He’s a strategically different fighter at heavyweight, now that his cruiserweight/light heavyweight talents don’t translate the same way. More combos than ever.

Left hook and a right hand by Adamek. Adamek is slowing down his movement because Arreola is just standing there. Adamek with more good shots. Arreola is having a horrible time. Adamek staggered on a STIFF left. Adamek is hurt and clinching. Arreola putting the pressure on!

Adamek hurt again! He’s barely hanging on in there. It’s not just footwork. Arreola’s power is starting to weigh on him. Weigh a good 250.

Right hand Arreola! Barely landed. Adamek with a left uppercut moments later. He hangs on to end the round.

Adamek is taking extra time to get the leather of his shoe taped up. Hmmm. That really could explain the footwork problems.

“Harold what about this footwear repair?” “What can you do, Bawb?”

Adamek landing some, Arreola landing some, and now Adamek warned a second time for a low blow. Arreola blinking hard, and referee Jack Reiss calls a headbutt on the resulting blood near Arreola’s left eye.

Arreola chasing and pushing the pressure again, but not getting much landed. This is very entertaining, I think. Right about as good as Haye-Ruiz, which I thought was a pretty damn good fight.

Arreola-Adamek R7

This, like the first fight, is about exactly what I expected. I’m thinking Adamek is just too big and he’s going to lay Adamek out at some point soon.

Wicked left hook by Adamek, but he cannot budge Arreola. He just can’t move him back, and Arreola accepts that now. He’s sure Adamek isn’t going to knock him out. Adamek with a left, but Arreola just walks through it and lands one of his own. There have been some fouls, all by Adamek it seems, and they’ve kept it pretty gentlemanly.

Adamek is boxing much smarter this round. I also think he’s getting a little tired. That’s an Adamek round, and I still think he’s winning this fight on the cards.

Arreola-Adamek R9

Adamek continues to box well. This has been a very visibly interesting fight. It doesn’t move at a pace where you can’t appreciate every shift in the tide. Adamek is digging into the reserves to finish this fight, it seems. Adamek goes low again, last warning. Didn’t look low to me.

This has been a clear Adamek round with 30 seconds to go. He’s just completely outworking Arreola, whose good 250 looks like it’s starting to become a factor. When a guy averages 3.3 rounds per fight, this is going to happen, especially when he’s as indifferent to conditioning.

Good right hand by Arreola! Adamek getting hurt, and maybe getting hurt! Adamek firing back! Arreola is reckless as hell now. He might think he needs to be. He might be right.

Adamek hanging on. 1:45 left in the round, so plenty of time to work. He’s still got snap on his jab. Arreola clubs him with another right, Adamek clinches again. Arreola holds his gut and cries out in pain. I’ve got no clue what that was. Probably his hand.

Adamek and Arreola both throwing hard shots. Arreola’s right fist doesn’t look closed. I think he hurt that. He’s not throwing that right hand at all. It’s hurt.

Arreola winging with whatever he’s got left, and the bell sounds as Cristobal gives chase. Very fun round, and hard to score. I favor Cris slightly.

Arreola is in pain and just doing everything he can. BIG left hook by Arreola, now he’s hurting again. Reiss almost jumps in, Arreola says no, and Arreola just keeps going. Wow. This is dramatic. This is Hollywood.

Arreola bringing the action! Fuck it, I don’t care if he’s fat right now. He’s busting his ass out there. He’s very much in pain, bleeding all over, and throwing everything he’s got against a very good opponent.

ADAMEK!!! I called this win. Too bad I never posted the prediction.

Phew.

When the draw card was announced, I thought for a moment we were going to see something screwy.

Nice to see that Adamek seemed to solve his stamina issue

Closer than it should have been, and yet I think the card closest to reality (117-111) is going to catch the most shit.

My goodness… that is the quote of the year for boxing is concerned…

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

Going into Arreola’s house and taking a clear decision.

But he’s hilarious and honest.

I like that fight, or Adamek-Chambers. Tomasz could still use a little heavyweight seasoning before the title shot.

Arreola

This is why Arreola will stick around and keep getting decent fights and money. He’s entertaining as hell.

Nice draft by the Niners. Pissed you signed Blount. I predict a top 5 rushing attack.

My Seahawks did well too….but the Niners look way more talented.

Cristobal should follow Scorcese's script and DeNiro's training regime

Put the weight on at the beginning …..and then work it off as the story progresses. It’s time for CA to decide if he wants to be a potential Champion …or a name to be added to the list of victories by those that do. Me thinks he’s heading toward the latter…if he’s not already there.

by pakinpower on Apr 25, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Adamek fought a brilliant tactical fight. Came in with a plan against a much bigger guy, and stuck to the plan even after sustaining big punches. Has to be considered a top 10 Pound for pounder.

He also has the best chin in boxing…

He could have very well lost that fight by KO.
