Suggestion
SC, since you’re doing the RBR, what do you think of putting the RBR info as part of the main article rather than in the comments?
It may be easier to follow it that way rather than scroll through a bunch of comments to see what happens in a round. That’s my thought, what do you think?
It defeats the draw of our blog platform, in that we have live updating in the comments so long as you have an account. I also don’t do blow-by-blow, in-depth details of most rounds, and I don’t provide short comments like, “Haye dominates the round with a stiff jab. Ruiz doesn’t do much. 10-9 Haye.” It’s more a discussion of the fight with scoring.

Fair enough. RBRs in the comments are always fun, but sometimes searching for accounts of rounds during big fights can get challenging.
Maybe adding a picture above each round reports? That seems like it might be a pain in the ass, though.

That wouldn’t be too hard to do. But for shows with four fights…I dunno.
Hmm. I’ll try it out sometime on a FNF or something.

While I would genuinely like to see Ruiz win, I think Haye’s superior athleticism will carry the day. He’ll hurt Ruiz eventually, and I see the fight being stopped in about round 9.

Format
I think it works great like it is presented now, and my thanks for providing your coverage as I can’t justify paying for it out of my budget. Sincerely hope its an action fight for the sake of SC,…else he may just up and leave us hangin’. No prediction from me, can’t get a handle on which version of either fighter will show up. This will be Haye’s 1st legit test at H/W, Valuev was just there, he didn’t do anything to retain his belt,…and Haye didn’t do anything to win it. Just wonderin’ if Ruiz has enough left to offset the speed and youth of David Haye, and take the fight to him? A pick ’em fight for me. Peace!!
This fight’s too important for me to blow it off. I’ve sat through Haye-Valuev, Holyfield-Valuev, Klitschko-Ibragimov, Klitschko-Johnson, etc., and done the RBR here. I’ll make it through Haye-Ruiz. Honestly some of the most fun fights to talk about in this format are bad fights, and bad heavyweight fights in particular.

MARCH BADNESS
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Ruiz stopping Haye
I don’t consider that to be an upset if it happens
If a man ain't found something worth dying for. He ain't fit to live.
I’m gonna go with Haye TKO 8 or 9. I have a strong belief that the first time Ruiz takes a few hard punches on the ropes, the ref will jump in, whether it’s warranted or not. Venue will be a big factor tonight.
"My God, kids today think that the laces are for tying up the gloves."

I can see a pre-mature stoppage in Haye’s favor. All that’s going to lead to is Ruiz crying for a rematch and the WBA agreeing with him.
If a man ain't found something worth dying for. He ain't fit to live.

I can see that
IF Haye isn’t as hesitant as he was in his past two fights. Ruiz has a beard, better than Mormeck, better than Barrett, and about on par with Fragomeni (who was knocked out, but the two really went to war in that one in a pretty damn entertaining fight, in part because Fragomeni has no power). If Haye is willing to exchange because he has no fear of Ruiz’s power, he can score a knockout. If not, I suspect this will go to the cards.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
I predict RJJ redux
Remember how Jones danced around and clowned Ruiz? I see Haye using his speed to do the same.
Those were my original thoughts on this fight,Cyke, not that i think Haye has RJ’s talent but considering Ruiz’ age,a dominating performance from Haye is what i expect.
I read on the Boxing Bulletin preview (and i have heard it said before) that if Adam Booth wears a blue shirt,Haye is more likely to box and look for a decision. If he wears a red shirt,Haye will be aggressive and go for the KO…..Seriously,he has done it in previous fights.
I think Booth will be wearing a red shirt.
So wait — in the UK you guys pay about 22 American dollars for this show? Jesus Christ. We get ripped off over here.

Personally i would like to see Haye take on Freddie Roach as his trainer if he comes through tonight.
Booth seems to be doing OK but he might be spreading himself too thin with the promoting, etc.
I think they should at least think about taking Roach on as an advisor as he could just add that bit of refinement to Haye’s skills. There has been talk of him taking him on before.

Adamu-Groves R1

Groves with a right to the body and a little left upstairs. Adamu is covering his face specifically as much as anyone you’ll see. Adamu with a quick charge — actually, “quick” is probably not the way to describe it. “Brief.” They’re both a bit tentative but when they throw, throw with purpose. Right hand Adamu, left hand Adamu, wild shots. And Groves ties up. So Groves is already better at clinching out of potential danger than Roy Jones ever learned to be.
Right hand Groves and down goes Adamu! He’ll come back, but I don’t know how much longer he can last. Another big right by Groves, and body shots. Adamu getting blasted into the corner as the bell saves his bacon. He’s not getting far in this fight. Groves is too skilled (and he’s wild himself), too strong.
Groves 10-8
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Adamu-Groves R2

Groves clearly has some real power, at least up to this level. Adamu isn’t anything special, but he’s always been durable. He’s getting bashed around the ring by Groves. Groves is just all over him. Adamu can’t do anything offensively because he’s worried — and rightly so — that he’s going to get whacked if he opens up. He’s so slow out of his defensive stance when he goes to punch that Groves is having a field day with him.
Groves is having no trouble whatsoever now. Adamu is tackling him trying to hang on. He’s desperate. Beaten and he knows it. Adamu’s legs are about gone and I’m already 100% sure his spirit has left him. Adamu swinging wildly now. He’s going to get past the second round, at least.
Groves 10-9
Groves 20-17

I don't know
Seems to me like Groves is what Froch wishes he was. If Groves doesn’t have a beard, he’ll be in trouble as he moves up. If he does, he could go pretty far. Good offense, lots of awkward angles, moves okay.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Adamu-Groves R3

Groves, to his credit, isn’t getting anxious. He’s not pressing and putting himself in bad spots. At 22 and going for his first title (in a system where the domestic belts actually matter still), that’s pretty nice to see. He’s trying to pick his spots and be calculated with his performance, having settled down since the first, when he was almost as wild and reckless as Adamu was.
Adamu is having his best round and maybe even winning this frame. He’s seemed more comfortable in there and landed a couple shots. Groves may have taken a slight bit of a break this round, but I think the way this has gone, he can afford it.
Adamu 10-9

Adamu-Groves R4

They showed John Ruiz coming in and said Ruiz knows this is probably his last shot at a world title. How many times has someone said that before a John Ruiz title challenge?
Right hand Groves, short shot, and Adamu goes down again. Yeah, Groves may well have even won the last round, but I think he took it off a little. Maybe even to get Adamu to open up more, as he spent most of the second round staying away from Groves entirely.
Groves unleashing body shots now. He’s letting it fly! Adamu hurt and down again! He’ll fight on.
Groves comes charging at him with his arms flying all over the place. Adamu getting sparked again, and he’s barely standing up. Groves is RIPPING into him! Jesus, this is getting ugly. Adamu is tough but he just cannot stand up to this guy.
The round ends, but I’m not going to be surprised if Adamu’s corner calls it.

Adamu-Groves R5

Right hand buckles Adamu’s knees again. Adamu throwing his hands some, but Groves isn’t concerned with that whatsoever. He’s just looking for more openings to crack Adamu. Groves landing again with good shots, but he lets Adamu walk out of the corner. We’re through another round, and I kind of wish we weren’t. Not that I’m bored, but this is feeling pointless now. I think we know how this ends.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Adamu-Groves R6

Groves TAGS him with a right. Adamu’s weird to figure in this fight. He looks old and slow, and sometimes it seems like everything hurts him, but he’s still in there, and has taken a lot of good shots well, too. Groves trying to find big shots now. I think in a way he’s abandoned his style — and there it is, the referee stops the fight after another big right hand.
Maybe a bit of an early hook in a nuts-and-bolts way, but this was out of hand. This was about to be 59-52 or 60-51 on the cards after six rounds. Adamu had no realistic chance of winning this fight.

An even better FNF
Andrade-Lucas and Bika-Brinkley got picked up by FNF. That should be an awesome card. I think Andrade will walk over Lucas, but Lucas will try his best to make it entertaining as usual. Lynes has that thing that some guys get, guys like Lynes (journeymen who can still fight a little, but not a lot), where he always seems like he’s probably 0.7 seconds slow in making up his mind what he wants to do offensively. It’s kinda like how Marquez looked against Mayweather at times, like you could tell he meant to do something but couldn’t pull the trigger on it, and it’s not really that he can’t pull the trigger, it’s just once he decides to the moment has passed.
Olusegan on the other hand is one of those guys you can tell thinks he’s a lot better than he really is. Sometimes those guys (Jean Pascal) actually get better, but usually not.

Duddy has fought better opposition and done better against them.
John has probably regressed as a fighter in the last year, but he still has more than enough to handle that kid.
Better opposition? He has? When? His best opponent has still been the 200 year old Campas who beat his ass. Ever since that fight he’s fought no one and still struggles

Name one fighter Chavez has fought better than Howard Eastman
There isnt one. Even if he was faded when John beat him
And if you want to look at common opponents take Matt Vanda. Chavez struggled wildly while Duddy completely tooled him.
Duddy by stoppage
Chavez at least rematched Vanda and beat him legit wise. Duddy refused to rematch both Campas and Walid Smichet. Both who deserved wins against him. Not to mention he refused to avenge his loss to Billy Lyell

Wrong
Lyell went elsewhere and took a beating. John has never been shy about his limitations. He acknowledged that he lost fair and square to Lyell. Hes never made an excuse is entire career. Chavez last performance was an absolute disgrace, and there is no other way of looking at it
We will see in June.
I really would be shocked if Chavez wins
Duddy’s better, and it’s not even close. Duddy is inconsistent, but he’s 3 or 4 classes above Chavez.

I wasn’t paying attention, but that would be funny. I love the nationalism. I don’t know why everyone got pissy when the Brits boo’d our anthem, but then again I usually boo it from my living room myself.

Well Ruiz is coming out fast. BIG RIGHT HAND DAVID HAYE AND DOWN GOES JOHN RUIZ!
Wow. Ruiz is in bad shape, too. He’s not going to last. He’s done. He’s up but he’s out of it. Shots to the back of the head from Haye, CLEARLY to the back of the head, and Ruiz is down again.
Ruiz is finished. Was Haye docked a point?
Haye firing again. Landing and blasting Ruiz. About a minute left. Haye isn’t going to finish him in one. Ruiz seems like his legs are coming back to him, but whatever. Ruiz hits him after the bell, too. Haye makes a face like someone just farted in his mouth.

Haye-Ruiz R2

Ruiz still coming straight at Haye. Haye would be better off to calm down and just jab him and set him up. Ruiz takes a big right hand this time. It hurt him, though. Not bad, but no doubt he felt it.
Ruiz has stalked Haye this entire round and Haye has not looked nearly as explosive. There really is a decent chance Ruiz was caught cold on that nasty right hand more than anything. Not that it wasn’t a vicious punch.
Far better round for Ruiz, obviously, but Haye takes it.

Ruiz jabbing and fires the straight right, barely missing with it. He isn’t backing off from Haye at all. I mean, I’m nicer re: Ruiz than most anyone, but this surprises me even. I thought he was finished in the first. He’s making a fight of it now.
Haye landing more again in the final minute of the round, and landing well. David is just such a dynamic fighter compared to Ruiz, whose toughness is carrying him now. He’s having trouble establishing anything offensively, similarly to the Jones and Toney bouts.
Haye 10-9
Haye 29-25

Haye-Ruiz R4

So now we’re at a point where Ruiz knows:
1. Haye can hurt him, and bad
2. Haye’s faster than him, by a lot, but
3. He’s gotten himself steadied and back in the fight
So now what does he do? He’s walking Haye down very well, but Haye appears entirely comfortable fighting going backward. Ruiz does land a right there, and another one gets in. Ruiz is having a really good round, in fact, so I think we’re seeing what Ruiz’s plan is. Haye may have taken the round off, but Ruiz has clearly thrown him off just a bit.

Huge right from Haye, and another one lands! Ruiz stays up, though. John’s caught in the corner, eats another right, and fires one back. Now he works himself out of there. Ruiz walking him down again. We’re seeing a pretty interesting fight, and for damn sure it isn’t boring like so many heavyweight title fights.
Ruiz lands a bit, gets a quick warning for using his elbows. Haye with a left hook, but blocked by Ruiz. Stiff jab by Ruiz. They’re complimenting Haye’s jab and going bananas about his boxing and “blinding hand speed.” This is a much closer round than they’re letting on. Haye is moving around the ring and not fighting much at all. He takes the round rocking him early, but RUIZ HIT AND HE’S DOWN AT THE BELL!
Hey, idiots — the round is over. They send Ruiz back to fight. Now they ring it again.
Ruiz’s nose is definitely broken.

You’d think Ruiz might change his plan a little bit, but I guess he really has no other ideas other than clutching and grabbing, and it’s too late for that. He’s still coming right at Haye. Haye with another shot, and RUIZ IS DOWN! More rabbit punch complaints.
Haye letting his hands fly now. Ruiz is going to bitch about this fight forever. Haye’s mouthpiece came out, now it’s replaced.
Ruiz still won’t back off. Haye is really taking over. He’s been pretty sensational tonight. Big right hand, then the referee jumps in for…some reason, and THEN the bell sounds.

This might be the end of John Ruiz’s career, but given that he’s got things to complain about, probably won’t be. He’ll keep going until he loses to someone he really shouldn’t because he’s gotten way too old.
He’s tired. He’s taken a pretty good beating. He’s been down four times. He’s had to chase Haye, AND he’s gotten hit by him.
Ruiz gets in a good body shot, and clips him upstairs with a right. How Ruiz keeps “bouncing back” with rounds where he doesn’t get his head taken off is perplexing me.

Right hand by Haye, Ruiz has to retreat again. Ruiz with a lazy jab now. He’s pawed that jab out there when he feels Haye might be ready to go after him again. Haye also has gotten him to lazily walk right in and get hit plenty. Tactically, I think he’s done a brilliant job in this fight.
Another huge right stings Ruiz, and he takes it. Rest of the round is back to the stalk-and-walk. Ruiz did some more decent things this round, but Haye is winning this fight on big punches.

Hayes becomes officially the world third best heavyweight. However, he can get better matchups, as good contenders may see him as a winnable fight. Who is next? Adamek? Chagaev?

Unless he steps aside. Then probably Chagaev after that.

Not sure if you fellas are kidding around but it’s pretty freaking obvious to me that Valuev, then Chagaev are not going to be Haye’s next fight’s.
He will drop the belt or pay step aside before he would fight Valuev again after he already clearly beat him and got a decision in Germany (usually unheard of).
If i have a small criticism of the writer’s on this site,it is that you put too much emphasis on these joke alphabet titles.
Haye will take the fights which make the most sense.
He says he wants to retire in 18 months before his 31st birthday.I know Oscar said this too but if he does stick to it he has been quoted as saying he wants Vit,then Wlad, then one defence of the undisputed before retiring,if all goes to plan.
The two Klit’s,Solis and/or the Adamek/Areolla winner would make the most sense.
As M A Barerra showed in the early 2000’s,alphabet belts mean very little when compared to lineal/Ring titles.
Fans know who the best are and Haye should just give up his belt if he has to,before taking on boring, meaningless fights.
you put too much emphasis on these joke alphabet titles.
If I went and counted the number of times either SC or Brickhaus have criticised the alphabet titles on this site I literally think it would run to over a hundred each.
Haye has built most of his recent popularity on being a “champion”, he isn’t very likely to drop his belt any time soon.

I’m not saying SC and Brickhaus aren’t aware how ridiculous the sanctioning bodies are but i know guys like Dan Rafael and The Ring hardly ever even mention them. They just say ‘so and so is fighting for a title belt’,and that’s how it should be,imo.Top ten WBA ‘contenders’,for example shouldn’t be given be even mentioned as legit opponents unless they’ve earned their ranking.
The reason i mentioned this in the first place is that i don’t think Chageav should be being mentioned as a potential Haye opponent.
If i have a small criticism of the writer’s on this site,it is that you put too much emphasis on these joke alphabet titles.
I have a large criticism of this criticism. When have I ever put emphasis on the alphabet belts? I just note that they exist. They do exist. Also, the fighters do care about them. Putting emphasis on the belt would mean I think the belt itself matters. I do not, in any single case, think that the belts of the WBC, WBA, WBO or IBF matter. I simply note that they exist, and that they are recognized as being important to the people fighting for them in most instances. The fighters largely do care about the belts.
Some guys (Chad Dawson and Ricky Hatton are great recent examples) are keenly aware that these title belts really don’t mean anything, and that if there’s a better fight for them out there that will get them stripped of a belt, screw it, fight that guy. But a lot of guys just do what the sanctioning bodies want them to do. I don’t know what Haye will do, but the WBA would probably prefer to have him rematch Valuev (which is a contractual clause), then fight their mandatory.
I’m not saying SC and Brickhaus aren’t aware how ridiculous the sanctioning bodies are but i know guys like Dan Rafael and The Ring hardly ever even mention them. They just say ‘so and so is fighting for a title belt’,and that’s how it should be,imo.
I say “so and so is fighting for the WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO belt,” which isn’t much different. I just name which one it is. I’ve never once hyped the belt as a major reason to care about a fight. We recognize the Ring titles as the championships of boxing. We have a whole thing on the left sidebar of the site that never moves. We do not call anyone “champion” if they don’t hold the Ring title. They’re “titlist” or “titleholder” or “beltholder.”
There is almost no difference in how we see or discuss these title belts as compared to Rafael or The Ring. In fact, I’d say we try to stick to those same standards — the belts exist, X is fighting Y for one of them, and that’s that.
The reason i mentioned this in the first place is that i don’t think Chageav should be being mentioned as a potential Haye opponent.
I don’t either, but he will be. Ignoring it won’t make it go away. Haye can drop the belt if he doesn’t want to fight who the WBA eventually orders him to fight.

Ruiz might be a 38 year old has been but Haye did the job and its bloody nice to see a heavyweight with balance and foot speed . Hayes corner once again had a great fight plan . Ruiz has two left feet and fights with his weight over his front foot so he is an obvious candidate to be jabbed to death . Jones and Toney both jabbed Ruiz head off . Being a glass half full kind of bloke Im glad Hayes bringing a bit of excitement to the division . Whether he can beat Wlad or Vitali is another matter but all in all Haye did the biz and it was an exciting fight so Im not whinging .
