Linus vs Snoopy

Snoop_medium

I planned on my first post being longer, well thought out, and more interesting than this, so my apologies from the gate. Since I'm being a perfectionist (as always) with the few ideas I've been working on, I decided to make my first post short and let everyone fill in their thoughts without my influence.

Regardless of hype, predictions, and comparisons, I've been contemplating what would happen if Shane Mosley wins the fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. tomorrow. I'm not interested in who his contenders will be, if he will immediately be compared with some of the past greats, or what kind of purse he can expect if Pacquiao wants to fight him next. Instead, I'm curious how Floyd would react, how he might approach the future of his career and his opponents, his celebrity, his legacy, how he markets himself, and what he would say to the 5.9 billion skeptics who already dismiss his claim that he is the greatest fighter of all time.

To date, the final fig leaf for the Cash Cow is his undefeated record, the one thing people can't contest. Regardless of the fact that being undefeated is only a piece of the pie when people measure a fighter's greatness, this seems to be his final refuge... short of calling someone a bitch, of course. When all of his other arguments fail, he clings to his 40-0 record like a security blanket.

So what are your thoughts about what Linus will do if Snoopy shows up rabid, snatches his blanket, and wipes his ass with it?

Clever

Look at you. Very lyrical. And quite a picture you’ve painted.

I would bet Floyd would come out on the offense and aggressive (ironic because he seldom is in the ring) and it would be all about the system hating Floyd. (yes, he would say Floyd) It was out to get him b/c he is too great. Everybody got what they wanted. It took this and that, and the wold finally got what they wanted. He would be a victim of it all, judging, doping, Golden Boy etc…

Hi John
Thanks. I won’t agree or disagree with you on the other points yet as I’m curious what others think, but I do agree with the 3rd person references. I’d love to know if boxers started that because it annoys me to know end and the only people who don’t do it seem to be from other countries. “I’m going to do what’s best for Floyd Mayweather.” If he said that to me I’d tell him to say hi to Floyd when he sees him. :)

If Mosley Wins

Well Freddi Roach said to Mosley, “that you’re too good a fighter and there’s not enough money” for him to face Pacquiao.

Well if Mosley wins, then there’s more than enough money to make the fight happen.

This is a great question

even if Shane’s not the man to do it, what will Floyd do when he loses? Will he explode? Will the world turn inside out?

I don’t know. If he doesn’t get KO’d, he’ll bitch like there’s no possible way he lost. It’s funny because I spend all this time hoping for a Floyd loss because he’s so obnoxious, but I don’t know that I’d like to see him lose in reality.

It’s like the other night watching Pavlik: before the fight, I wanted Sergio to do well, to really give Pavlik some problems, and maybe even beat him. But then when that started to happen, it was like ‘no, I don’t actually want Pav to lose’.

So we’ll see. I still hope Shane whips his ass.

Good point

This is closer to was I was pointing to. What happens if Floyd falls, ever? I don’t think the world will come to a halt, or boxing (which is what he’d like us to think), but personalities like his can go nuts when the house of cards not only falls, but is set on fire.

I’d love to see Shane win because I’ve admired his talent since the 90’s and he’s more of a humble champion outside the ring and a fighter inside the ring. I’m trying to fight off the urge to want to see Floyd lose because of the way he acts, but he makes it damn hard not to. At this point seeing him hurt and bleeding on the canvas would suffice even if he wins. It’s a shame because he’s exceptionally gifted but it seems like the guy needs his ego fed. Fewer and fewer people are giving him the respect he desires (some of which he deserves) because of his attitude.

I started to feel like that in the Pavlik fight but then it flipped and I was pissed he just gave up. HE needs a new trainer and a heart transplant.

A promise is comfort to a fool.

Nice angle ShadowMask

He might succumb to the Prince Naseem Syndrome and simply vanish. Or he may release a pseudo rap concept album devoted to the conspiracy theory behind his stolen ‘O’.

I detect the sweet smell of upset.

Thanks Goat

Well he owns a record label, doesn’t he? The album would feature 50 Cent, be produced by Floyd Sr., and be titled It just Ain’t Right. Single of the same name.

The one thing that seems like it might lead to that, at least in a spiritual sense (if I dare go there), is the order of events that led to the fight. Mayweather and Pacquaio seemed imminent, Mosley and Berto was a signed deal, Pacquiao goes for Clottey, Mayweather looks for more scrubs to fight, Berto drops out and goes to Haiti, Mayweather and Shane meet up. If Mosley does win, I guarantee you that they’ll point it out, talk about how it was the most unlikely of circumstances, ordained by divine providence, etc. I can just hear Lampley now standing in front of an empty ring before the replay.

A promise is comfort to a fool.

I think that a loss might actually make his next fight draw bigger. So he could probably console himself with another big paycheck.
