Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

According to Dan Rafael, Cuban amateur star Guillermo Rigondeaux has severed ties with trainer Freddie Roach. This might actually be a good move for him - I honestly didn't see anything that Roach was adding to his repertoire, and Roach is extremely overextended at the moment. He was spotted last week training with Floyd Mayweather Sr., but long-term, he's looking for someone who is willing to train him out in Miami. In somewhat related news, he pulled out of his fight this weekend because of injuries he suffered in sparring. He says that Roach was having him spar light middleweights, and that was part of the reason he has chosen to cut ties.

Cmon Brick

You really feel leaving a top tier trainer is good for his career? I respect your opinion more than anybody on this site(much more than SC)but it sounds like more of a geographical thing seeing as he wants to train out of Florida. I don’t know how anybody can train with that crack head Mayweather Sr. SC I know you are gonna run your mouth about your idols pops so let me hear it…

Huh?

I think he could use a good trainer, and didn’t say otherwise, but I doubt Roach was giving him the attention he needs, and it seemed like there was a bit of a clash of personalities there. I’d like to see him hook up with someone who can get him to fight more aggressively. His defense is already top notch, but he has that amateur habit of waiting and waiting until he can land a perfect shot. Eventually, he’ll face someone with solid defense and he’ll just get outworked.

Maybe it wasn't a good fit personality-wise.

And I’m a Roach fan, but he does seem to be spread pretty thin at the moment. Rigondeaux is a unique talent, and deserves a lot of attention, but I don’t like hearing that Freddie wasn’t crazy about his conditioning or that Rigondeaux felt like somebody should come “pick him up” for his runs. All you need to run is a pair of shoes and the road. A guy who has been training and fighting as long as he has shouldn’t need somebody to get him up and going, especially when he has a lot of missed time to make up in terms of earnings.

Some guys need the motivation

And if that’s what he needs, then he might be better off with a lesser-known trainer who’s able to get on his ass.

Billy Graham?

Anyone who can get Hatton (the real one) down to 140 as consistently as he did must be able to kick this little bastard’s ass into gear…. :)

Last I knew Billy was in fairly bad shape physically. Which is too bad, he seems like a good guy.

I think Mayweather Sr. is a crap trainer at this point who has done nothing significant in years.

“Hey Ricky Hatton, move your head.”
“I don’t wanna.”
“Well, fuck. I’m going to Taco Bell. I am the best I must confess.”

I have no clue how you think Floyd Mayweather Jr. is my “idol” other than I don’t spend my life bitching about everything he does because of some bizarre vendetta.

Maybe

Not sure it’s the best style fit though. Would have been great for Cotto though.

Brother Nazim

I like him with Naz with his careful style. Also Naz will use the whip when necessary. It is hard to judge Floyd Mayweather Sr. by the Hatton fight. Floyd knew what Hatton’s weakness was but couldn’t get him to correct it, which has to be both trainer’s and boxer’s fault. If FMS could teach Rig, FMJ’s style Rig could turn out to be fairly awesome.

It is hard to judge Floyd Mayweather Sr. by the Hatton fight.

I don’t judge him solely by that. But what’s the last time he really made a difference for anyone? It’s been a long time now. With Hatton he seemed disinterested in putting in a full workload (I’m saying that because of things that the Hatton camp said about his behavior and habits), and honestly you have to wonder if physically he’s up for a top-flight camp anymore.

If FMS could teach Rig, FMJ’s style

He can’t do that any more than Freddie Roach can create another Manny Pacquiao or Dundee could make another Ali.

I said style not become FMJ. I think he would be a good head trainer with someone else doing the physical legwork in a tag team kind of effort. Of course that would mean that FMS had to admit some kind of weakness, which may be kind of hard….

by Waldo Rastel on Apr 9, 2010 4:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Mayweather’s style isn’t even something I think you can really just teach a guy, especially a 29-year-old finished product. You can iron out Rigondeaux’s flaws and stuff, but I don’t think you can change him much from here on out. He is what he is at his core.

I was thinking about the combination of a philly shell style defense, in and out footwork, and counter-punching. Finished products always try to add new wrinkles and new skills. Rig is a weird case because he has a crazy long amateur career and a very short pro career. If he is learning how to change from amateur style to pro style, then I think he could probably pick up some new tricks too.

I thought FM Sr. did well with Dawson and Guzman

Both of them were markedly better under Senior I think, but Senior’s SUCH a difficult personality that both of them left him anyway.
