Campbell-Ortiz R1

Campbell stalking but not punching. Ortiz not punching either. Ortiz has a much bigger frame than Campbell. That’s obvious right away. First minute passes uneventfully.
Campbell’s jab looks slow. He swings a roundhouse right but misses. Ortiz with a right hook and a straight left. Nate is very animated. “No, no, didn’t hurt.” He’s doing that on everything that lands, and “No, no didn’t land” on everything that misses. Ortiz isn’t doing anything at all though.
40 seconds and this round is still winnable for both. Really Ortiz has probably landed the better shots so far. Left hand Ortiz. Campbell shakes his head again. Campbell goes to the body, but not much on it. Ortiz with a right hook, and they rule it a KNOCKDOWN? Awful. Jesus Christ. He kinda shoved him at the end there. Terrible fucking call.
Ortiz 10-8
Awful, awful call.

Campbell-Ortiz R2

Ortiz starting to open up a lot more. Campbell still shaking his head on everything. God, his handspeed is gone (Campbell’s). Now Nate going to the body, then lands a short uppercut.
There’s not a ton of action here, but all the best punches really are coming from Ortiz. Ortiz snaps his head back there. Campbell is extremely tentative, isn’t punching enough, and has no snap on his punches. Ortiz flurries near the bell and rips Nate with shots. Nate talks to him after. Talking and gesturing has been most of Campbell’s output so far.

Ortiz with an uppercut, then another. Campbell trying to dig to the body but Ortiz just has way more than Campbell does. Straight left shakes Campbell. Another one lands. Ortiz is just picking up steam and confidence now. Ortiz with ANOTHER hard left hand. Campbell is about to crumble.
Huge body shot by Ortiz. Nate’s going. He’s cooked, man. He’s got no speed, no power, and Ortiz is just beating the shit out of him this round. He’s tougher than hell, Nate is, but he can’t last with this. Campbell with a right hand, his best punch of the fight. Ortiz is methodical, getting a real groove, and just had a huge round.

Lederman thinks Campbell can’t pull the trigger. I think he’s right, but that’s just one of Campbell’s problems.
Ortiz dictating all the action at this point. Ortiz not landing as much this round, but Campbell still isn’t getting anything done. Left to the body, right hook to the body by Ortiz. Campbell can’t do anything. I am a big Nate Campbell fan, but I can’t call this any other way. He looks finished, and Ortiz is having an easy night.

Straight left by Ortiz. Nate is taking shots pretty well, though clearly feeling shots. He’s still got that in his arsenal. He can take a punch still. It’s about all he’s shown tonight, that and an ability to chase Ortiz.
Ortiz catches a good one and wobbles a little! Then it settles down. Nate still has spirit. Now Campbell caught on the ropes, and Ortiz doesn’t land anything. Right hand from Nate, off balance when thrown. Closer round, but still an Ortiz round.

John David Jackson wants looping right hands from Campbell.
Campbell with a straight right to the body. Ortiz felt that one for sure. Left hand by Ortiz, then an uppercut. Now he’s teeing off, but not landing because Nate’s guard is up high. Right hand clips Ortiz’s chin, but didn’t land square.

I’ll also say this: Ortiz’s corner left an entire mess of water in the corner. Jesus, guys.
Harold just popped a boner over Victor Or-tizz.
Campbell now not stalking and seeing if Ortiz will come to him, maybe. Or he’s just sick of going after him. Maybe, like Ajax, he’s sick of this running crap. He feels he can take this wimp.

Ortiz is bigger, Ortiz is stronger, Ortiz is quicker, Ortiz is a southpaw, etc. Campbell’s only real advantages are experience and will, and Campbell’s body won’t let either of those come into play. It’s unfortunate, and it sounds hypocritical after picking Campbell to win, but this fight isn’t really showing me much I didn’t know about Ortiz.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
I agree with you for the most part
Ortiz has gotten caught with a few shots, and he hasn’t shown a ton of aggression. I would like to see him go for the kill on Nate, but he doesn’t want to. The Maidana loss is in his head, and I think it’s going to be until he fights someone who floors him.
This is again a situation where HBO has said strange things. Like “Nate isn’t trying to win the fight.” Nate is still trying to win. He isn’t, but he’s not getting butchered in there or anything like it. Hell Ortiz looks downright timid this round.

Campbell-Ortiz R8

Nate shaking his head again. That’s been his greatest offense. Attempting to convince Ortiz that his punches have nothing on them.
Ortiz getting cocky and warned about going low. Left from Ortiz, and another. Campbell with an uppercut. Ortiz talking a lot. This fight has a lot of wrinkles and is showing me a lot about both guys, actually. I’m finding it interesting to watch. I’ll get into it more in the post-fight if it finishes the way it’s going now, but I’ll say in short now that Ortiz’s dominance is really unimpressive, which both is and isn’t his fault, and Campbell is just done for.

The thing is, this fight is going a lot like a imagined it. Some people were saying that Ortiz was going to stomp Campbell to make a statement, but he is just fighting a safe fight and easily winning. He doesn’t seem willing to risk himself to get Nate out of there.
"My God, kids today think that the laces are for tying up the gloves."

Not taking away from Ortiz either
But he is just winning, not trying to do anything risky. He just wants the scalp, and that’s what I figured.

Ortiz has thrown nice looking combos
but he’s not getting a ton to land. He’s only caused some swelling, if he was hitting, he would be busting Campbell up
Campbell-Ortiz R9

Ortiz starting to let it fly, and Campbell is blocking most of it but is still absorbing shots here and there. Campbell with a right. Campbell with a WILD right that lands, and Ortiz fires back! Maybe a bit of a dust-up…
Nah, not really. But Nate looks like he’s going to leave whatever he has in the ring. He’s whipping shots around perhaps at his own peril. He’s still not winning and NOW they’re going on about Max’s “Who would I rather be in that round?” method of scoring, which is a can of worms I don’t have the energy for.

UK coverage.
Ol’ Duke just said “It’s rare that you see two fighters fighting at this point in each other’s careers.” I think he wanted to say “prime.” But seeing a propped up young guy against an old warrior? I’ve seen that one a little too often, thanks.
Campbell has several grandchildren

Ortiz on his bike, throwing now and again, enough to keep the round moving and maybe win the round. Campbell is offering no real resistance, just cover. Nate trying to bang to the body with 30 seconds left.

Khan-Malignaggi R1

Khan showing off his speed right away, but landing nothing. Malignaggi looks at Smoger for something as they tie up a second time within 20 seconds, and Smoger just goes, “Fight, guys.”
Khan with a right, Malignaggi throws back. That seemed to shake Paulie, but in that way that jumpy fighters get jumpy. Khan getting the better of the early going. Good jab from Khan — really nice, in fact. Had some zip. Left hand again by Khan. Right from Paulie to the gut, but he’s hit upstairs. Paulie is getting rattled around in there. Khan looks very focused. Right by Paulie, but Khan blasts him again. Woo-wee, kid looks good. And that speed is for real. He’s proven that within two minutes. That wasn’t just slow guys, he’s wicked fast.
Khan rocking Malignaggi all over. Paulie looks stunned by Khan’s speed. Right by Khan again. Malignaggi getting marked up. Paulie showing his speed too, but just not landing the same type of punches. Khan with a right, then a left. Malignaggi hit again. Khan tore him up in that round.

Khan rocks him again straight off in the second. Malignaggi makes a charge. Khan’s supporters are quite vocal. Malignaggi seriously has a look on his face that I’ve never seen from him before. Khan’s speed is really doing a number on him, and he knows it. Malignaggi’s cut too.
Khan’s jab is terrific. Left hook shakes Paulie, and a right behind it just misses, one that could have put Paulie on his ass. Paulie chopping away as they tie up. Left hand lands from Khan again, one of those punches you can’t land if you aren’t a hell of a pure athlete.

Paulie is making Khan fight at a faster pace than Kotelnik did, you can say that much. Khan’s much more aggressive against Malignaggi than he was Kotelnik, a guy he had even greater physical advantages against. Paulie with a hook that lands.
A bit better a round for Paulie in the first two minutes. Malignaggi starting to land some counter shots as the Paulie chants go up. Khan throwing still, but not landing as much. Still doing fairly well, but Malignaggi is starting to come back into this fight. It could be as simple as he’s settled down. Khan clips him a bit as Paulie charges.
Much better round for Paulie, but a close Khan round. They’re both marked.

This is tough to keep describing. Paulie doesn’t have a prayer in there unless he can hit Khan with a CroCop-level kick or something. And Malignaggi even looks like he knows he has no hope anymore. Guys have quit in the corner doing better than he is tonight. And all credit to Khan. He still has his issues, but I wondered about his speed (not IF he was fast, but HOW fast), and he’s proven to be worthy of me saying in the past that he had top five handspeed across the entire sport. Does Paulie’s corner consider throwing in the towel at some point in the next round or two?

NO!
He hired them specifically to NOT do that.

Khan-Malignaggi R9

Whoa — it looked like Paulie was considering packing it in, but he’s going to fight. Maybe it’s his hand again. First thing that came to mind (I see others thought about it too)
Paulie standing still and trying to land bombs. There’s a sentence you don’t want to read if you’re a Paul Malignaggi fan. Khan battering him. Malignaggi’s face swelling up like he’s allergic to bees and just poked a hive.
There are still a lot of guys Paulie can beat out there, but Khan ain’t one of ‘em. Anyone fast is going to trouble him badly. Paulie staggers on a right hand, then comes back with a slap attack, but Khan knows it’s useless and just throws back.
Khan 10-9
Khan 90-81

No Paulie don’t feel you. He feels Khan, and probably feels frustrated as hell.

Khan-Malignaggi R10

Khan’s jab is starting to bother Paulie alone. Khan with a right hand. Left from Khan. Paulie mounts a lame attempt to get some offensive in, but he’s half-hearted at best with his punches now. Khan with another left hook. This is just all Amir Khan.

Smoger really is fatherly in a way that isn’t out of place with his role. “You okay son? You need money? I can only give you forty bucks, but it’s no problem. How’s school?”

oh btw i guess i lied. i’ve seen khan get KTFO, but thats hardly a good representation of khan’s skills.

Khan tearing the hell out of Malignaggi now. I’m not a GOD THINK OF THE CHILDREN guy, but this is pointless and Paulie looks like he can’t wait for this to be over with. His face is swelling badly, and Khan is killing him.

Paulie landed one punch to the chin. One. Jeez.
by Verklemptomaniac on May 15, 2010 11:43 PM EDT reply actions
Well that was a pretty comprehensive beating. Khan pretty much jabbed Paulie to death and didn’t even really have to mix in many power shots to beat him down. You could not have asked for an easier matchup style-wise for Khan.
There’s a pretty big difference in quality between Khan and Ortiz, no? Khan would abuse Ortiz something fierce.
If Ortiz doesn't catch Khan and KO him early
Khan is better than everyone else at 140, no doubt. But is he better enough to not get caught, because he has the worst chin of any top level fighter I’ve ever seen.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
His style has changed, and his hands are higher. He’s definitely capable of getting knocked out of a fight he’s easily winning against anyone with pop, but I’m starting to think he’s good enough to not get caught. He’s almost like a 140-pound Lennox Lewis, actually, and while he’ll definitely have a Wha?? defeat to come, he can make a career of that shoddy chin.
