I’m pretty sure Rafael is going to win but I’m a big fan of Israel. I’m sure the eye will be an issue but I hope it doesn’t stop the action these two brings. They make me proud to be mexican american. Give Em war !!

I’ve got enormous respect and admiration for both, but I can’t help rooting for Izzy to pull it out of the bag just one last time. His bravery never ceases to amaze me, and it’s really been a privilege to watch these guys fight. The way they embraced each other after the third fight must be one of the defining images of boxing in the past decade.

This is my last one for a few weeks. Will be in VIetnam, so I probably won’t be posting for a while, other than the schedules that I have teed up.

Have a good one!
Hopefully, Marquez and Vazquez can roll back two years and amaze you with another war, and Mares-Perez turns out to be the barnburner that we all expect it to be…
Starting to get pumped for this.

Perez-Mares R1

Mares with a little flurry after they feel each other out for, oh, 40 seconds. Mares shoots to the body but doesn’t get it. Perez winging and missing from all over. Left hook Mares, and they’re already starting to trade heavy shots. VERY hot crowd. “Yonnhy” chant goes up and is shouted down.
Right hand Mares. Left hook Perez is mostly blocked. Right hand Mares after a left from Perez, and they both keep throwing. This is gonna be good. It’s already good. Mares backs him downw ith a right, but Perez comes right back. Both guys seem to be wanting the left hook, but especially Perez. Mares spins him on the ropes and throws some big rights in combination. Perez hit with a left hook and a right! Another right lands. Damn good round.
Mares 10-9

good fight so far
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"

Perez-Mares R2

Mares with a right, then Perez with a STIFF left hook. Perez firing big shots off the ropes. Gus is really hammering Mares thinking he has speed advantage into the ground. Right hand Mares clips Perez. Combinations from Mares, now digging to the body. Right to the body by Mares. He’s slipping Perez really well and landing good shots, but I don’t think he has the power to get to Perez too quickly. It’ll be late if that becomes a factor. Yonnhy’s active but having his problems with Mares.
Perez clips Mares with a right. Mares landing big shots, Perez throwing back. Boy this is some pace they’re cutting. We know Perez can go 12 hard, active rounds, we don’t know if Mares can. Tarver steals my line. That’s why he’s so great!
They’re exchanging when the round ends.

Perez-Mares R3

Mares on his bike to start the round, working around the ring. And now he’s moving in and throwing again. Left hook Mares. Most of their exchange there didn’t get home, but they’re definitely making each other think. Stiff left hook by Perez but not totally flush. Mares moving around a lot more now. Circling the ring, leaning over when he comes in. They exchange at center ring again. Neither landing with a lot of zip.
Three shots from Perez. He’s looking like he’s figuring Mares out. Mares getting hit with Perez on the ropes! Lefts and rights! Mares bothered by those shots, I think. Uppercut lands and Perez is starting to take over. Left hook Mares! Uppercut Mares! Perez back to the ropes and throwing again. Jesus, this is a hell of a fight.
Right hand Mares! Right by Perez! Right by Mares! THEY END THE ROUND FIRING AWAY! HUGE RIGHT MARES!
Perez 10-9, but very close (great comeback by Mares in the round)

Mainly because I gave Perez the last close round. He looked utterly exhausted in the middle of the round…and then that came out?

Perez is already starting to seem fresher than Mares
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

Perez-Mares R4

They come out throwing right away. This is getting nasty! Perez landing some big shots! Mares getting backed down now. I think he might be warring with a guy he can’t beat over the long haul in that sort of fight. Big right from Perez! Mares is definitely feeling the power. Big right Perez! Left hook Perez! Body shot from Perez, then a chopping right upstairs. Mares hits him with a right, but Perez is just winging shots now. Backed into the corner, Perez just stands and fights.
Loving this one.
Right hand and left hook perez after they exchange! Uppercuts from Mares! Oh shit, this is getting AWESOME. Mares might be wearing down, but if he is, he’s going out on his shield.
Both throwing yet again, but Mares is trying to move away. Perez is stalking him very effectively. Perez landing heavy shots with both hands, and I think he just had a big turning point round.

Perez-Mares R5

Left hook Perez as Mares paws the jab. He’s hurting Mares and getting into his head. Mares has a ton of guts but he’s getting outworked big now. Mares leaning over a ton when he gets close. Perez has taken over the momentum. Perez just will not stop. This guy is some fighter. BIg combo from Mares! Perez landing HARD shots back with his back on the ropes, though. Even when Mares opens up and lands, it seems like Perez is just landing much, much harder.
Perez having another big round with 30 seconds to go. Mares looking a little discouraged by being presented with a guy this hungry, this good, and this tough to move. Right hand Mares, but Perez just keeps walking forward. Mares is landing good shots still, but Perez is controlling without question.

Mares on his bike again to start this round. He’s not running, but he badly wants distance and that’s the only way he can create any of it. Right hand Perez as Mares opens up. Mares landing back, then moves away again. I think Tarver is calling a perfect fight right now, as an aside.
Mares still moving, and moving, and jumping in but usually getting hit back when he does, so he moves back out. Mares moving in and jumping back out. He’s not landing anything heavy now. Left hook by Perez, but then a GOOD right from Mares. Mares with a nice combo, then snaps Perez’s head back! Now he’s doing some good work, and that’s probably enough to take this round. Perez didn’t close as much as he has been.

Perez-Mares R7

Right by Perez, now he’s starting to close distance better again and keeping Mares from coming in fast and getting back out. Long right by Perez just misses. Mares really has no other option than to fight like he was. He was losing the firefight and knew it, and he’s fighting smart. The war has calmed, but now we have a pretty good battle anyway.
Left hooks, and Mares pushes Perez into the corner. Mares with a right. Another close round. Mares better have reserves for the gas tank, though. Even moving this much is taking a toll on his stamina. Tight round, but I think Mares was a bit more effective, even if I like the way Perez is constantly stalking.

The crowd is really starting to boo the hell out of Mares here and there. But Perez isn’t going hard at him like he did earlier, either. Left hook Perez. Mares with some hard shots from the right hand, and Perez responds. Tarver brings up that retarded “he’s the champion so the champion’s championship is safe!” bullshit.
Perez pressing a bit more this round and Mares isn’t doing as much as he is. Good round for Yonnhy, but I don’t think we’re going to see anything different from Abner from here on out. The wind came out of this fight’s sails in a way.

Mares told his trainer he’s getting tired.
Right hand Perez, and he’s winning the exchanges inside again. Mares not moving quite as much, and the speed of his hands has dipped considerably. He’s definitely wearing out.
Mares staying in the pocket more again, then strays a bit low. Now Mares getting distance again. But he’s not “running” as much this round as he has in the last few. He might just not have the energy to keep it up. Mares strays low again. Perez isn’t making any big Bernard about it though.

Mares pressing Perez onto the ropes and firing! Some decent shots, Perez gets out quickly though. I think they’re both slowed down to the point where it’s going back to what it was early. Mares has kept a good body attack I haven’t noted enough, admittedly. Perez has done more good body work than I’ve said, too. It’s been quiet from both sides, but pretty decent stuff.
Left hook by Perez! Both land jabs. Right hand Mares, mostly blocked. Right hand Parez and a left hook that just misses from Perez. Right hand Perez. Left to the body by Mares. Now it’s heating up again. Left hook Mares, Perez fires back. Back to the body by Mares. He’s coming at Yonnhy, and now it’s YONNHY backing up a little bit. I’ll be damned.
Another left hook to the body by Mares. Winging, wild right by Mares misses. Right hand Mares! MARES UNLOADING! PEREZ LETTING HIS HANDS GO TOO! But Perez resets at mid-ring! What a round this one is! Right hand Perez, bell rings, woo!

Mares is pressing the action. Perez needs a second win and there’s not much time left for one. Mares digging to the body but with the amount of soft warnings he’s gotten for going a bit low, he might want to be extra careful. A point could swing this fight.
Mares with good shots! Perez short on just about everything now. Mares landing good stuff and his speed has come back. He’s throwing whatever he’s got left into these final three rounds, it would appear.
Perez not landing anything too hard anymore. Mares is slipping again. There’s Perez with some tight shots. Mares round, though, and I think Perez needs something special in the 12th.

YONNHY PEREZ-ABNER MARES OFFICIAL DECISION

115-113 Mares
114-114

Goddamn it. Bummer for Mares I think.

I thought Mares took it in the last three rounds, but I can see a scenario where Perez won.
I reserve the word “robbery” for scoring where there is no plausible way the scores could have come out this way.

No argument there.
I totally whiffed in 12th round scoring, but that’s the right score. Rematch!

I wouldn’t have had an issue with anything up to 116-112 Mares, but I think a draw is a perfectly reasonable card. Those middle rounds where Mares was mostly circling didn’t look good for him.

but a draw is not a crazy decision at all
it was a good fight, look forward to what should be an immediate rematch

I scored the first three for Mares, and all three easily could have been scored for Perez.

Here’s how it broke down- if you gave Perez the close rounds where Mares was on his bike, the draw is a good score. If not, you think Mares won.

10-9 Marquez
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Vazquez-Marquez R1

Vazquez swings a heavy right, just misses. Heads clash a bit. Right hand to the body by Vazquez. Jab from Marquez. Vazquez with some of his own. Left hook Marquez after a blocked right. Left hook Vazquez clips Marquez. Right hand, left hook from Marquez again. Left hook Vazquez. Jabs from Vazquez, jabs from Marquez. Marquez misses two long uppercuts. Marquez jabbing. Short hook from Vazquez. Marquez with shots, but Vazquez gets under them. Marquez throwing hard, Vazquez lands a big left hook! And another one gets in!
Vazquez 10-9

10-9 Marquez, but Vazquez had his moments throughout.
It’s an interesting start; I still can’t believe I’m watching this once more.
Vazquez-Marquez R2

Right hand Marquez lands solidly. Vazquez with a left hook, but Marquez got one in too. I scored the first on Vazquez scoring better power shots, IMO, and doing enough with his jab, but Marquez and Vazquez … look like they always look against each other.
Vazquez’s eye already bleeding pretty heavily.
Right and a left from Vazuqez, but Marquez bangs back a bit. Vazquez playing D a bit more than usual, I’d say, but that’s about it. Marquez with a lot of punches. He’s peppering that cut. 1-2 from Marquez! Marquez unloading! Right hand chops Vazquez. Left hook, uppercut, and now digging to the body.
They exchange words.

cut
this fight’s not going to last much longer with that cut…
Vazquez-Marquez R3

Cut ruled to be from a punch.
Vazquez coming out to punch, but Marquez is right there for him. Marquez with a right. Vazquez with a left hook that clips him. Izzy bleeding from both eyes now. Heads clash and Vazquez backs off.
Vazquez cannot overcome that blood. NO way. He’s a wreck.
Right from Marquez! Vazquez goes down. He’s…got nothing.
He’s going to fight on. Marquez going for the kill. Vazquez not punching back at all. Vazquez going down and it’s stopped.
Rafael Marquez TKO-3
Exactly what I expected. Do not run this fight again. There’s no point. Marquez will do this exact same thing again. Vazquez needs to take his big paycheck and go home.
