What a Shock: Donaire-Darchinyan rematch is off

Once again, Nonito Donaire won't be rematching Vic Darchinyan.

The supposedly done August rematch between Nonito Donaire and Vic Darchinyan is off, reports Ronnie Nathanielsz. Donaire's wife Rachel says that Darchinyan doesn't want anything to do with Donaire, and she is unsure whether it was the money or something else.

She did say that based on what Top Rank told her, "now Darchinyan will really look like a coward." Gary Shaw and Darchinyan have yet to comment.

Raise your hand if this surprises you. We'll wait.

It's time to forget about Donaire-Darchinyan II. Whatever the real reason is, it's not happening, so let's forget about it and move on. They've been trying to put this together for about two years now and it's fallen through every time.

As we do move on, Ray Wheatley said a few days ago that Darchinyan will fight on May 20 in Australia against Filipino Richard Garcia (21-10-1, 5 KO). It was probably meant to be a tune-up, but if that fight goes through now, it'll be Darchinyan's second straight mismatch.

As for Donaire, the plan there is reportedly to have him in yet another uninteresting fight on a Yuriorkis Gamboa card in July, and then to move him forward for a fight with Fernando Montiel later this year. Montiel has the WBC and WBO titles at 118 pounds, and though he does have an obligation to fight Eric Morel right now (or the Morel-Jorge Arce winner, if that fight happens), remember that that's a WBO obligation. Having another belt (the one favored by Mexican fighters) might mean he's willing to part with the WBO strap.

I like Donaire

but it seems like his career is stalling badly. I know he was sick and what have you, but I think his team has been making bad decisions for a while. I could go without hearing Donaire-Vic rematch rumors forever.

Donaire has done nothing since beating Darchinyan. We’re almost at the three-year mark for that. He hasn’t lost, but his profile has hit rock bottom considering he’s still (ridiculously, IMO) ranked in a lot of P4P top 10s.

People forget that he didn't do much before that win either

He really only has the one big win to his name.

Yep. He was supposed to be yet another speed bump for Mack Truck Darchinyan, albeit one with the interesting revenge for my brother angle. He was nobody.

huge mistake signing with top rank. then again top rank is completely missing the boat with him as well. how he hasn’t become the main support on manny’s ppv’s is beyond me.

But who would headline the lucrative Pinoy Power series?

That’s the problem with Arum’s little PPVs, isn’t it? They keep selling even when he matches his headliners against substandard opposition.

You could almost understand if these two were heavyweight celebrities trying to get the biggest slice of a huge financial pie.

But good lord, they’re super flyweights. If boxing can’t even get its best two super flyweights to fight each other…well, I’m not doing a `boxing is killing itself` routine, ‘cos that’s overblown, but let’s just say shit like this doesn’t exactly keep the sport healthy.

Numbers are never talked about (partially as nobody cares), but yeah, they must be doing at least well enough for him to cover costs and keep putting them on. They’re never particularly expensive shows and generally do promise some action at the very least.

Figure they usually sell in the 50k - 100k range

And at $40 a pop, that’s still $1 – $2 million in additional revenue that wouldn’t be there otherwise that can be used to pay his fighters. I doubt sticking Donaire on a Pac undercard adds that much revenue to the Pac card. All it would really do is raise Donaire’s profile, and frankly, a fighter that small is never going to have mainstream appeal.

One thing is that if VD

is pulling out, that is not Donaire’s fault.

Tough to fight if nobody wants to fight a man.
But some of you probably know a lot more about the possibilities for Donaire than I do, and one way or another, it does seem that his career has stalled. I’d say move on from Vic.

I’m not convinced right now that Darchinyan is the problem, to say the least. We’ll hear their side, I’m sure, but we’ll never really know what happened. It’s sure as hell time for them both to forget it. The way it’s going, they’ll fight in Australia when they’re both shot and can’t make anything under featherweight.

But it’s fairly convenient that Arum has a Montiel-Donaire fight that could be quite hot right now, from which he’d, you know, keep all the revenue and not have to give anything to Shaw. Montiel-Donaire in Vegas on a Latin Fury/Pinoy Power PPV could be good money for him.

I think this fight is now going into the “for when I’m dead broke” file for both guys. Years from now, after their primes are done and interest in both has fizzled, they’ll get this one on… up at super bantam or thereabouts.

It could be politics;

it could be Arum (which is another way of saying politics and greed)—

but if I were to guess about who might be a little leery about facing the other guy, I might guess the one who was brutally KTFO could be hesitant. Yes, one for the “dead broke” files.

Vic has been doing nothing but calling out Donaire for years

I doubt he suddenly watched tape of their fight and decided it’s not such a great idea. One great thing about Vic is that he honestly doesn’t seem to be afraid of anyone. One of my favorite Vic moments was when he called out Jermain Taylor, figuring that since he was picking on smaller fighters anyway, why not Vic?

I heard Shaw

saying no Donaire for a long time, and I’ve never seen or heard Vic foaming to get a rematch.

I hardly feel that Vic had done nothing but call Nonito out.
And, if he did watch a tape of the first fight and then watch tapes of himself in his latest fights, he could find plenty of reason to think that not fighting Nonito again is pretty wonderful idea.

In fact, I’m calling Vic out this very moment.

by Don From Prov on May 5, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Darchinyan actually has talked about the rematch a LOT. Shaw has said no, in part because Donaire dumped Shaw to go to Top Rank (Donaire, in a twist of hilarity, felt Shaw wasn’t getting him enough or big enough fights). But recently Shaw just went, “Well, let’s do it I guess.”

My guess is it’s money. Darchinyan does think he’s some big time star because Shawtime Showtime has been buying all his fights for years and have essentially crawled up his ass. This rematch isn’t really worth anything more than any other Darchinyan fight, but he may feel it’s a mega fight.

Well, I'm calling Vic out

big time, but my promoter (c.compota@yahoo.com) is demurring.

Now, if I really wanted the fight, I’ll tell my promoter to shut up and make the match.
But I live with her, so Vic is safe for now.

Boxing websites should only give monthly reports on this bout, rather than daily, since there will probably be more back and forth crap. Otherwise, you’re just wasting cyper-space.

The Ring has Donaire ranked 4th on their pound for pound list. I know they’re supposed to be the voice of reason amongst all the organizations and crap belts, but sometimes they have me scratching my head as well.

They have a legacy problem. Once you get on a list you pretty much have to lose to get off of it, which means Donaire has done nothing but climb the list since the Vic victory.

Donaire – Montiel is a fight I could get behind however and it would be good to see Donaire take on some top level competition.

I do think he wants to. I don’t blame him.
