But can HBO PLEASE get a new picture of Paul Williams? He looks absolutely terrified in that one.

I hope people are re-evaluating their “WHY DIDN’T SHANE GO FOR IT WHEN HE GOT HIM HURT?” questions from last week. I thought then he went for it. He clearly went for it. Mayweather did some great stuff here to hang on and recover.

Also, Bayliss let Floyd clinch to hang on in that. I mean really, there’s a point where Kenny is about to step in then suddenly jumps away and waves his hands. Certainly didn’t do that later in the fight.

ESPN Classic is showing “classic” boxing. Panchito Bojado. They have a messed up definition of classic.

Anyone watching the Top Rank live locker room feed from the show in Mexico? They just wrapped Margarito’s hands and did it the tape then gauze then tape method that Tito got busted for trying before his fight with Hopkins. I guess that way must be legal in Mexico…

What the hell is going on with that dumb A-Team movie anyway. Liam Neeson as GEORGE PAPPARD? That’s the dumbest idea I’ve heard all week. That guy can barely speak with an American accent. He looks like he’s in pain when he tries, and its one of those phony sounding ones anyway.

Best movie for accents in recent years may be Elizabethtown. Orlando Bloom’s terrible American accent, Kirsten Dunst’s worse Kentucky accent.

Love that one; it’s obvious Costner gave up on his horrible British accent somewhere around the middle of filming, but, of course, movies aren’t filmed in sequence, so the awfulness is sprinkled throughout.

Williams-Cintron R1

Cintron with a jab. Williams with a long left just off the mark. Cintron with a windmill left hand that clips Paul. Williams lands a solid left. Williams with a left to the body. Two left hooks by Cintron land. Williams misses a long left. Cintron looks really focused and relaxed, and so does Williams. Cutting a decent pace in the first round while feeling each other out.

Kermit misses a long right. Both land sharp shots in close, Williams with a hard right uppercut at the end of the first.

Williams-Cintron R2

CompuBox had Williams at 1/32 with the jab in the first round. HBO REALLY needs to give up on Paul Williams having a jab. He doesn’t. It’s not just that Cintron is right-handed. Williams’ jab stinks and he doesn’t care about it.

This pace is all for Cintron. First minute goes by without any action. Crowd starts booing they’re doing so little halfway through the round. Cintron is at least flicking shots. Cintron loading up that counter right, just missing with it. One or two landed there, but not clean or hard. Williams feinting, Cintron not biting at all.

And now they stop doing anything again. Williams with two pretend jabs and a left that misses, but Cintron doesn’t land in return either. Cintron really trying to find that one right hand. Williams does absolutely nothing this round. Cintron didn’t do much either, but he’s up 2-0.

Body right by Cintron. Williams flicks that jab out four times. Not one of them looked like it had the intent to really land. Cintron with a counter right, not clean. Crowd is clearly losing interest. Well, actually, patches of the crowd (and growing) are getting pissed.

This fight is pure tactics. It stinks so far. First round was alright. Nobody’s taking the initiative. They’re piling up a few punches thrown stats, but they’re mostly flicking for-show jabs.

Looked to me, especially in slo-mo, like he hit his right shoulder/neck on the corner of the apron before he hit the table. I think that was what did it. He put his glove up behind his head (like it was his neck) immediately after he hit the table. If the table did it, it would have been a lower back/rib injury, and he would have put his gove down towards his hip.

by teabaggingexper on May 8, 2010 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

What are you trying to get at comparing Martinez’s level as a fighter with Glen Johnson’s?

Glen Johnson is as tough as they come, and I would give him the benefit of the doubt against anyone in the light-heavyweight division, excluding Chad Dawson.

If you’re comparing them in any other way, i.e stylistically or in terms of actual talent, that’s just nuts. Martinez has been very impressive as of late and he’s demonstrated it against legit fighters.

Just like anybody is “beatable” on any night, even Mayweather. Look man, no point in arguing with you. You have your opinion that most would disagree with, but that shouldn’t stop you from holding that opinion. But you also shouldn’t continually trash a fighter up and down this thread with no real basis to do so other than that opinion.

Exactly...

I think it would be a cracker. Both are fast, smart and Martinez can hit hard. It has the makings of a great fight.

Not sure Floyd is talking it up. I mean, outside of Pacquiao there’s not much else he can talk up. I see it as know different than Pac talking Foreman after Cotto. Talk: nothing more.

I think it’s too risky for Floyd.

Any chance this gets changed to a No-contest

Seems warranted, in my opinion, and that of everybody who’s weighed in on the subject.

I dunno

But that surely seems appropriate. Plus, it might be an additional incentive for a rematch. It should definitely be somewhere else. Why did they schedule this in California anyways? Two east coast guys in the middle of a very classless crowd (I saw some people cheering when Cintron went down)

wrong

He’ll rematch Paul Williams, and this time get the W. He’ll then be left to rematch Cintron, or maybe fight Foreman if he gets the win over Cotto to add another trinket to his collection.

I think falling out of the ring and injuring yourself should be a unique enough of a circumstance to bend the rules a little, disregard the scorecards and declare it a no contest.

After tonight

it has become abundantly clear that P4P, we have:

1. Manny
2. PBF

(switch them if you like)

everyone else

Paul Williams and Martinez, who most have at 3 and/or 4, just aren’t in the same league.

What did this night have to do with Martinez? Ya, Williams didn’t look all that great in the first 3 rounds of tonight’s fight, but that shouldn’t discredit Martinez’s standout performance (and win, IMO). I still think a Martinez-Mayweather fight would be interesting—not saying that Martinez would win, i probably wouldn’t bet against Mayweather, but I still think Martinez deserves to be in the top 5 P4P.

by Vartanyan on May 9, 2010 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Williams DID beat Martinez (narrowly), and Paul’s flaws and limitations are becoming more and more apparent. I’d favor both Manny and Floyd to defeat a boiled-down- to meet 147 Williams fairly handily. I also strongly favor Floyd over Martinez at 154.

by The Boxer Rebellion on May 9, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with this statement, Williams flaws are really starting to show

Martinez does have alot of heart though, but i think he would lose to mayweather easily

and let me restate

the height differential between Manny and Paul could well be too much. But I think Manny is P4P significantly better.

by The Boxer Rebellion on May 9, 2010 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Mayweather is using Martinez like Pac has been Yuri and Valero to create an illusion that there’s an alternate to Pac/Mayweather. That’s not to slag Martinez who is clearly a top fighter, and someone who I think would give Floyd problems at 154

by sillycaboose on May 9, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Money-Martinez

would be a dreadful fight at 154, I fear. Martinez is slick, but Floyd is slicker and we’d be treated to a relatively boring 12 round decision for Floyd, IMO.
