Don't threaten us with a good time, Kermit.

I think it might be time for another poll… similar to whether Dirrell was faking or not.

by Hatfield on May 9, 2010 8:50 AM EDT reply actions

Can someone explain WHY he would have faked an injury?

I don’t get the insinuation: he was doing well in the fight, had landed a nice shot in the 4th round seconds before falling out of the ring, and was ahead or even on most people’s scorecards here. I’d get it if he was being badly beaten to that point, but he clearly wasn’t.

by The Boxer Rebellion on May 9, 2010 9:22 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah I can’t see a reason for him to have faked an injury there. What’s he get out of it? A no contest at best? I thought he was winning the fight, and he and his corner seemed to think he was winning. He was fighting quite well and it was LITERALLY just about to pick up with Williams opening up with punches, which it seemed was exactly what Cintron was hoping for. He’d been trying to load up his right hand for three rounds and now Williams was going to give him more openings. The whole thing was goddamn weird, but I don’t think he faked anything.

If the "war of wills" was Williams wanting to force Cintron

to rush in vs. Cintron wanting to force Williams to open up, Kermit was winning that war.

What it would have gotten him might have been very interesting.

by Don From Prov on May 10, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me take a shot.

He thought he was winning, didn’t like what was happening, and would get the decision if the fight was stopped.

You asked.

by pakinpower on May 10, 2010 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Lampley didn't know if would go to the cards there

Scott didn’t know it would go to the cards. I didn’t know it would go to the cards. The ref had to inform HBO that the fight would go to the cards there, and everyone was shocked. Anywhere else in the country, and the fight is a no contest. But Kermit Cintron, who was fighting in California for his second time ever, knew this obscure rule and was trying to get a decision that way?

Give me a break. You’re seriously making no sense.

Who knows, Kermit could be the world’s foremost expert in the byzantine rules of the 50 state boxing commissions. I’ll bet he was on Lexis/Nexis all week before the fight studying up on how he could find a way out of fight just in case he was thrown through the ropes in the fourth round.

by taco pal on May 10, 2010 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

More seriously – that California rule is crazy. We can set aside the fact that three-and-a-half rounds aren’t enough to judge a fight, because four rounds probably aren’t enough either. But still, what would have happened if Cintron had been thrown out of the ring five seconds into the fourth? Would the judges have had to score the five seconds as if they were a whole round? There’s no minimum time cutoff for when the fourth round becomes an “official” round?

by taco pal on May 10, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Context is everything....

I would never ever suggest any such thing about a boxer with an unblemished record of fighting through adversity. Cintron does not fit into that category.
And we are talking about Kermit Cintron.

You tell me, are you genuinely satisfied with DiBella’s, Dubin’s and Kermit’s contradictory statements on the nature and extent of Kermit’s injury. Better yet, how soon would you invest your money in promoting him if that were an option in the future.

Personally, As an agent …. I would be wary of doubling down. But that’s just me.

by pakinpower on May 10, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

He'll have to tell you why

because he did. Jack wallace the doctor attending to Cintron said he asked him twice whether or not he wanted to continue and his answer both times was NO!

Cintron had claimed some other dribble but he has now been totally contradicted by the doctor who stood over him in attendance. The doctor even said that he would have given him every opportunity to continue

so whatever his reason, he did quit.

by pakinpower on May 11, 2010 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I won’t say he was ‘faking it’ per se. But I find it hard to believe that he couldn’t continue or even attempt to stand.

I think he thought he was winning on the cards, saw an out, and made no effort to continue…. thinking he’d come away with the W.

by Hatfield on May 9, 2010 9:49 AM EDT reply actions

It wasn't his call.

The doctor refused to let him continue. I was really surprised by the scoring. I had it 3-0 for Cintron and I thought he had landed the harder of the shots exchanged in round 4. Best situation would be for California to nullify the decision and these two fight again.

by MambaFan on May 9, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

And they should revise their rules in this area.

I had it 3-0 Cintron as well

I think I was most surprised that he didn’t even make an attempt to move after what appeared to be a rather harmless fall.

Appeared being the active word there… it could have hurt like hell.

by Hatfield on May 9, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Any word on what the injuries were?

The 20 seconds before the incident were promising something epic. Just set a date for the rematch and reinforce the ropes.

by cyke on May 9, 2010 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

Why were other fights even being discussed for Williams? It seems a no brainer to just immediately reschedule a fight between the two of them. It’s not like Cintron couldn’t continue because of a head butt or other foul, I mean the dude fell out of the ring. There has to be some kind of exemption for that.

I was thinking, what if Mayweather-Pac finally comes together and something like this happens after three rounds?? Talk about a bunch of pissed off folks wanting their PPV money back.

why are people hating on kermit ? :S

He did nothing wrong! The doctors refused to let him back in the ring. He told them he couldn’t breathe because he got the air knocked out of him. When they heard him say he couldn’t breathe they assumed he punctured a lung or sum shit. They needed to give him his 5 minutes. Its in the rule book so why didn’t they ?.. They should reverse the call or just let him have his rematch. He was winning the fight. He had a higher hit % so why would he throw away the fight ?? Can someone please explain to me why ?? Cuz a lot of people have talking shit and what not but I don’t understand why ? Quit the bullshit and let him have another shot!

by LJchamp on May 9, 2010 1:20 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

It was just a misunderstanding. But I agree that he should get a rematch.

by taco pal on May 9, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Err...

Who’s “hating” on him? No one here seems to be.

True, no one here seems to be hating… however, you should read some of the stuff I’ve read in other sites. The comment section on ESPN was especially nasty. And all this time I keep thinking: “what’s Kermit’s motivation for, literally, taking a dive?” And I just can’t find one.

by Apprentice on May 9, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that if Kermit were that adamant in his ability to continue, he would have — at the very least — stood up on his own. I know that ’doctor’s orders’ were for him to not move, but if he really believed that he could have continued, he should have shown it.

by steak_knife on May 9, 2010 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

When he was gasping for air the doctor’s literally forced him to stay down, and when he got his wits back he was being strapped down. I have no idea what else he could have down besides hulking out of the restraints and running back into the ring.

But no worries. There are plenty of recipes to make it more palatable.

Because no doctor would ever lie to cover himself?

What’s with the vendeta against Cintron? It seems a little silly seeing as I’m sure we all agree that the rule is absurd, and that a rematch would be the best way forward.

Fair nuff, thought it might have been because of the increased attention from the ring article or something like that.

An additional piece of information

In an article by Peter Nelson on HBO’s boxing portal, he claims that Cintron didn’t have any shoes for the fight, and they had to buy a pair of shoes that same day. The article is not very good (very skewed, at one point in particular it makes it seem like Paul Williams was taking absolute control of the fight… he even says something like: “Cintron landed a right with what balance and strength he had left” as if Paul Williams had kicked the living shit out of him) but that was an interesting piece of info.

by Apprentice on May 10, 2010 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

I wasn’t here for the livethread, but I William up at the time of the stoppage. I’m a bit surprised that so many of you saw Cintron sweeping the fight.

I can see why Cintron is ticked off, but threatening to quit the sport if he doesn’t get his way makes him look like a whiny crybaby. Not impressed.

I had Paul up at stoppage time too. It wasn’t like these were clear cut rounds in any case. More like “well I guess I’ll give X that round because of Y punch” or “Well, A seemed slightly busier than B.” It was a pretty ugly and uneventful contest up until the 4th.

That said, I gave Cintron the first. I thought the first was a clear Cintron round and that the third was a clear Williams one. The second round was pretty much up for grabs.

This conversation has only begun SC.

The doctors attending to Cintron have now confirmed it. They asked him if he wanted to continue and he said “No” !

With a fighter of his history of emotional fragility, this confirmation only made those who questioned KC more credible. And those toon prepared to dismiss them too unwilling to see that what may be unfounded criticism of any other fighter to be perfectly sound reasoning with Cintron.

by pakinpower on May 11, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

The doctors asked him if he wanted to continue and he sad "No!"

It now appears that my suspicion and those of others who questioned Cintron’s behavior were was spot on. Kermit was given every chance to continue and he indicated that he could not.

Now that is the Kermit Cintron we have all come to know; strong physically and weak mentally.

by pakinpower on May 11, 2010 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Kermit has folded in the past,

but he was fighting a smart fight. I had him slightly up.
What was starting to unfold very well might have led to an interesting night—

I say give him a rematch.
If not, Mr. Williams, fight a welterweight—any welterweight; you weighed in at 152.9lb.

According to the doctors attending him he was asked whether he wanted to continue and he said "NO"!

In other words, like many suspected, he quit.

While laying on the ground , winded in his own words ‘for a minute’, he told them he could not continue…and only after he was placed on the stretcher did he complain.

Bravo Kermit. But No Encore!!

You don't need to post the same thing a half dozen times

And who knows how the question was worded. “Do you want to continue” and “Are you able to get up” could have two very different answers but mean the same thing to the person asking the question.
