Sibbo vs. Collins: Blast from the Past
Bad Left Hook welcomes back Ted "The Bull" Sares for another feature. This time, Ted looks back at a 1983 fight between Tony Sibson and John Collins.
* * * * * * * *
He [John Collins] could put you to sleep with a right hand.
--Tim Kane
He's got a big mouth.
--Marvelous Marvin Hagler on Tony Sibson
I don't know where he got that from, unless he's just using it to psych himself up...All I've said was that I'm excited about fighting him because I think he's the best middleweight...
--Sibson, mystified, on Hagler
Tony Sibson (1976-1988)
After watching David Lemieux recently dismantle Elvin Ayala in Montreal, I was reminded of another compact, strong fighter with a somewhat hunched stance and that was Tony Sibson who fought in the 1970s and 1980s and was regarded as one of Britain's best. He was Commonwealth and European champion and a serious world title challenger
When "Sibbo" was on and had trained properly, he was a very dangerous fighter. He was a stocky scrapper who came out of the Belgrave gym in Leicester. Going undefeated in his first 25 bouts, he finished with a great record of 55-7-1and was seldom in a dull fight. After losing to Kevin Finnegan in 1979 with the BBBofC British middleweight title at stake, he reeled off 14 straight wins, including TKOs over former world champion Alan Minter and Bobby "Iceman" Coolidge and a points win over talented Dwight Davison the later being a final eliminator for the WBC Middleweight Title. He then met Marvelous Marvin Hagler at the Centrum in Worcester, Mass on February 11, 1983. Hagler (55-2-2 coming in) pummeled the shy and affable challenger decking him twice as he stopped him in the 6th. Sibson, badly cut, was game and courageous, but simply did not have enough to stand up to Hagler's relentless fury.
His next fight would be against John Collins in Atlantic City on October 8, 1983.
John Collins (1980-1986)
Like Sibson, Chicagoan Collins had a stellar amateur record and got off to a great pro start winning his first 29, 25 by way of stoppage. Most of his fights did not go beyond the third canto, and this may have contributed to his later downfall. Among his victims were Teddy Mann, a fading Oscar Albarado (58-11-1 at the time), undefeated fellow Chicagoan Lenny Lapaglia (19-0), and a prime Kenny Whetstone (23-1).
When he fought in the Windy City, the good looking and tall (6'1") Collins had the appeal of a rock star. Indeed, he brought out the City's South Side Irish in droves. When his fights began, the place would erupt into chants of "Collins! Collins! Collins!" The fans would go wild when he put together slick combinations and landed his signature straight-right cross which carried menace and finality when it connected flush.
The Fight
Collins was the undefeated favorite when he met Sibbo who was coming off the aforementioned loss to Hagler. A win by the Collins could well position him for a big pay day fight against the Marvelous one, but it was not to be.
In the first round, a fit and ready Sibson hit his taller opponent with solid jabs and some damaging short rights. Sibson was a great inside fighter and that's where the he was doing the early damage. Then, with 27 second left in the round, Tony cornered the Irishman in a neutral corner and rocked him with two vicious left hooks and a brutal head-snapping jab that had all of his weight behind it. Again trapping him in a corner, this time his opponent's corner, a crunching hook sent Collins to the canvas, but he was saved by the bell and his corner quickly tried to revive him.
The second round began as the first ended and it was clear Collins had not fully recuperated. Sibbo quickly sent Collins down with a powerful straight right and then finished him off with a series of short but effective shots that sent him sprawling across the ring and then onto the canvas for the third and final time in the fight.
It had been a Chicago-style mugging, but this mugger was not a Chicagoan.
Later
Sibbo had bounced back with this sensational two-round win (which was highly reminiscent of what Andy Ganigan had done to Sean O'Grady in 1981). Just like that, he was back in the middleweight mix. Unfortunately, he then lost by TKO to lanky and slick Don Lee (again in Atlantic City) in an up and down thriller that he seemed to be winning until he got caught cold in the 8th. He then won 5 in a row including a UD over Mark Kaylor in 1984 at the Arena in Wembley. In that one, he captured the EBU (European) Middleweight Title, the Commonwealth (British Empire) Middleweight Title, and the BBBofC British Middleweight Title. However, he lost badly to Dennis Andries in 1986 in a fight for the WBC Light Heavyweight belt, and then to undefeated American Frank Tate in 1988 in Birmingham--this time for the IBF Title. This would be his last fight. As an aside, a CS gas canister was reportedly thrown into the crowd, causing fans to start rioting. Many were overcome by fumes from the canister, and they reacted by engaging in numerous scuffles. Not exactly a Minter-Hagler situation, but definitely nothing to feel proud about.
Collins would assume the role of fringe contender and go 5-1-1 before retiring in 1986. In a bit of bubble bursting, John would later KO Mark Holmes (32-0 coming in) to win the USBA middleweight title. Holmes was the over-hyped brother of heavyweight champ Larry homes. But he himself would be waxed in his last fight to Robbie Sims, Marvin Hagler's half-brother and a vastly underrated fighter. Earlier, John received a gift 10-round draw against "Bronx Bomber" Alex Ramos when they met in Chicago in 1984 in a fight I witnessed at DePaul University. Many thought Alex had been terribly robbed. Believe me, he was. Affirming this notion, the Bomber had broken Collins's jaw, cheek bone, possibly some ribs, and had rendered his face a bloody mess. But beating a good looking Irishman in a Chicago boxing ring requires a bit more than the bludgeoning Ramos gave Collins. Still, Collins finished with a highly respectable 34-2-1 mark and an even more impressive KO percentage of 81.
Sibson and Collins fought during a time when television gave us a great number of entertaining fights and fighters. The middleweight division was dotted with names like Taylor, Fletcher, Ramsey, Green, Mugabi, Parker, Kalambay, Roldan, Starling, Curry, McCallum, Kinchen, Benn, Singletary, Thomas, Nunn, Tate, Hamsho, Collins, Watson, Graham, and many, many more. Tony Sibson and John Collins were both game and exciting fighters. With a combined mark of 89-9-2, they certainly did nothing to detract from the luster of this great time in boxing.

I really enjoyed watching Sibson fight.
But the name that brought a memory up here was Lenny Lapaglia.
Lenny was very good and the fight with Collins was a very big deal in Chicago at the time.
Italian from Melrose Park vs Irisman from South Side. Wow!

so “Kid Blast” is the “Midnight Rambler”. Am I the last one to figure this out?
"Yes Gina, I am a Wise Cracker"
It's a long story, but I knew Kid Blast back in the early 70s when I lived and worked in NYC.It was a nodding and remote relationship but we were both boxing and modern jazz fans and that was
the connection. He was cool. Dressed the part as well. Of course, his brothers, Larry and Crazy Joe are now dead, but as far as I know, The Kid is still alive and in Brooklyn on President’s Street where he owns a few great Italian eateries. He is about 80.

Sort of like that Mexican cross-country skier at the 1988 Winter Olympics. He was so far behind everyone else that they sent out a search party to make sure he was OK.
Not always, but I tried to do it on this one because there was a lot of grist for the mill.

I have a tape of:
Robbie Sims ICING John Collins from 1986 somewhere in a box…………. Collins had to lose weight prior to the opening bell and looked like a limp dick against Sims………. It was an ugly loss for Collins……
I was sold on Sims in 1986 and ’87, but he proved to be not as good as he was hyped or thought to be……. Sims failed in about 3 title tries……..
His 1993 loss to Vinny Paz showed just how far gone Sims was by then…….. ARGH!
NOTE:
I thought Duran did enough to get a solid draw with Sims in their epic ’86 fight in Vegas…….

Most insiiders though Sims was very underatted. He had great whiskers and was technically
very sound. He fought some tough customers like DeWitt, Hard Rock Green, Murray Sutherland, Barkley (who he starched), Tony Chiaverini, Benn, Kalambay, etc.

Wheather in victory or defeat Sibbo was always honest in acessing his preformance, he freely amitted he was not in love with the game, but that didn’t stop him being a very fine middleweight at a time when the divison boasted some real talent.
Sibson would have burst some overly inflated bubbles had he been around today.
Great Little Read Ted
I remember the hype on pretty boy Collins . The Chicago Micks thought they had a good one .Sibbo ruined him . Sibbo was never in a boring fight , Ted . Like you said he always seemed like a top bloke , perhaps a bit too nice . He was unfortunate to fight Hagler when Marv was at his absolute peak .Sibbo fought better opposition than many moderns Pom fighters . Minter , Hagler ,Kevin Finnegan ( a really underrated fighter) , Dwight Davidson, a prime Andries , Kaylor , a prime Frank Tate ,Dangerous Don Lee who definitely used to live up to his name , shit that bloke could whack. Cheers Ted .

I’d rate Sibsons resume above say Calzaghe even though Tony wasnt as good a fighter . Its a bit different facing a prime Marvin Hagler in your first title shot like Sibbo did than beating a Chris Eubanks who had lost twice to Collins in his last 5 fights . Too many frigging divisions , too many bloody titles . End of rant . Cheers Blokes.

Ahh good stuff Ted!
My dad’s from Sibbo’s old stompin’ ground of Belgrave; Leicester fighters are close to my heart. Tony fought more like a Yank even though he trained above a British pub! No soft option for Sibbo hey JC. He loses to a prime Hagler then immediately returns to the States and hammers the undefeated Collins. No soft-arsed-bastard cherry pickin’ for our Sibbo.
Minter often used Tony as a sparring partner but Sibbo was the defending Euro champ when they met. Minter never fought again. If he was around today? Sibson v Pavlik is a cracker well within his grasp. – Ted, Sibbo’s still considered a folk hero by the Leicester people and I’m going to forward your piece to my dad in Tasmania- he’ll love it. Cheers mate.

A Greek Aussie household is a warm place hey JC, especially for an 8 yr old Pomgolian immigrant tasting home-baked baklava for the first time! Ted, Greek is the fourth most commonly spoken language in Australia after English, Chinese and Italian. Port Melbourne is an old Greek community Ted, I’ve bumped into Stan the Man Longinidis – former HW kickboxing world champ – a few times down Bay St.
Tosca Petridis – kickboxer/boxer who fought my Aboriginal mate Colin Weetra in his pro debut – then fought Iran Barkley in his second fight!! George Sotiropoulos – UFC MMA , Glen Lazarus – unstoppable rugby league legend, Stan Lazaridis – superfast Socceroo. You’d often face a tough Greek boy in the amateurs down here Ted. My first loss was to Sam Koulianos – bloody southpaw!
