Great that they're made it this far

Just a year ago, this felt too good to be true. Now we’re waiting for the third and deciding stage. They’ve all been good fights so far.

Here’s something for a Saturday night.

Great matchup in styles. Boxer vs puncher.

Don't pick a fight with an old man, If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

Green was trying to say that he wasn’t a pure puncher but more of a boxer with power. No one was buying this logic along with the “I speak Jive” line he keeps saying…

by Waldo Rastel on Jun 17, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

He really isn’t a pure puncher though. He’s more skilled than, say, Miranda.

by taco pal on Jun 17, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is why he was outboxed by Miranda

He might be more skilled, but he has a lot of other flaws. The biggest of which is that he has trouble letting his hands go unless the other guy is hurt.

I agree with Brick on this one. He may be more than a pure puncher but he is not even close to being a “boxer” stylistically.

by Waldo Rastel on Jun 17, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t say he was. Nor did I say he was very good. I’m just saying his statement about his fighting style was technically correct, which it was.

by taco pal on Jun 17, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair, he’s not that much of a puncher based on his stats. Having a 2/3 KO % is not that good versus the level of competition that Green has faced.

by Waldo Rastel on Jun 17, 2010 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, which further goes to show he isn’t a pure puncher.

Now that Ward is beginning to impress me

he’ll probably get starched, but I don’t think so.

by Don From Prov on Jun 17, 2010 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

I would agree that boxers can get complacent in this position but Ward looked beyond focused at the Presser. More focused than his previous fight against Kessler, almost seeming like he was mad he was such a big favorite or something.

by Waldo Rastel on Jun 17, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Green is going to get shut out

With the possiblity of a KO late on.

Really hoping for a Green win.

Something about Ward – probably the S.O.G. nickname, to be honest – really rubs me up the wrong way, and it’d set the third stage up sensationally. Ward-Dirrell would mean that little bit more, with both potentially needing the victory to qualify, and everyone would pretty much stand an even chance of going through (unless Green were to win on points, which frankly isn’t going to happen, but would nevertheless mean Arthur Abraham qualifying for the semi finals).

It really is that nickname for me

I’m liking him more and more, but I just can’t stand that nickname. Makes him seem completely full of himself, but it seems like he’s not in reality.

Yeah, if he was going to use a Mayweather-style character and be an arsehole, then I guess I sort of get the S.O.G. thing, but otherwise it just seems lame, arrogant and stupid. I understand he’s religious or whatever, but calling yourself the Son of bloody God doesn’t affirm your status as a religious person. It’s a bit like Yuri Foreman calling himself Moses, but that would be a lot funnier and wouldn’t really piss me off at all haha.

Ironically, while I suppose it can be explained theologically, I think just about any evangelical Christian’s initial reaction to that nickname would be to find it deeply offensive.

by taco pal on Jun 17, 2010 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I would disagree quite firmly

Throughout a massive amount of religious sources there are references to God the Father, and one of the prevailing themes of the Chrisitian faith is that all men are “God’s children”.
I feel that anyone who understands this would recognise that the nickname is not intended to be arrogant or egotistical, but rather to respresent his strength of belief in one of the pillars of his faith.

It’s still a pretty lame nickname though…

I understand all of that, but it’s the general assocation with Jesus as being the Son of God that makes it come across quite arrogant.

Don't disagree with your theory but

C.O.G. for Child of God probably would have been a better way to get the same message across.

by mcallan1 on Jun 18, 2010 8:35 AM EDT up reply actions

No, I mean I hear what you’re saying. I’m pretty sure this was the particular Bible passage he was thinking of.

26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

So once you analyze it and think about it, yeah you can see it’s not intended to be arrogant or anything. It’s just that it’s not common usage for people to refer to themselves with this terminology, unless they’re specifically alluding to that passage.

Or to put it another way, if you are calling yourself “A” son of God, that would be deemed normal. But obviously, if you go around calling yourself “The” Son of God, that has an entirely different connotation. Ward doesn’t use either – his nickname is just “Son of God” with no article – but normally with boxing nicknames, the definite article is assumed, so it sounds initially like a real eyebrow-raiser. I agree with mcallan1 that “child of God” would have worked better, because that would have made it clearer that he’s not saying “The”.

by taco pal on Jun 18, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I can definitely see why it would be percieved as arrogant

But I agree that it certianly wasn’t intended to be seen this way.

I have to agree

I’m not sure what it is. I think, like others here, that it’s that stupid nickname. But it’s also the fact that he calls himself Son of God, yet does not even want to fight outside of Oakland…. that’s a very small god he seems to believe in.

by Apprentice on Jun 17, 2010 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

He is very proud of Oakland

And wishes to fight there in order to bring good things to it, I see nothing wrong with that.

I do think there is something wrong with going into a tournament where everybody has to fight outside of their country and he doesn’t do it even once. That’s not fair and I’m not sure why everybody else agreed to that.

by Apprentice on Jun 18, 2010 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Haha – surely God is omnipresent and not limited just to Oakland! We need the Son of God to clear all this up…

S.O.G. lame name

Other than the lame name—we know he means we’re all children of god, but some of us are atheists—I do like him, but I think Green is interesting. He seems slow, but he might just be efficient, and he looks extremely strong. Also, thank you, Oligold, for clarifying “conservative referee” for me the other week re Vasquez—I hadn’t looked back.

Are we going to have guest judges for this fight?

I would like to enter my name if I missed the post.

no

We tried it once and one of the five didn’t respond. It’s likely to happen that way or worse pretty often.

How about trying one more time

With just three? Of course, if it’s a hassle for you, then don’t worry about it.

We might try it again sometime, but it won’t be for an Allan Green fight, I’ll say that much.
