Ward-Green Live Weigh-In Results and Open Thread
I guess today's weigh-in goes live at 4pm PT or something. Ask Waldo, he's the one going. He'll have live updates to tell you that both guys weighed between 167 and 168 pounds.
You can also use this as an open thread to talk about whatever in the meantime. Doesn't have to be boxing-related, either. Talk about the NBA Finals last night, albums you've been listening to, movies you've seen lately, baseball, football, the World Cup, books, your favorite color, whatever.

I'm off to France tomorrow
For a week, so I shall sadly be missing this fight which I would have stayed up for otherwise. Ah well. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I will enjoy getting drunk on a beach at 3 in the afternoon!

Green
is the best color. If anybody disagrees…he’s nothing but a troll

I was also an outspoken Slovania fan this morning at the office just for the sake of drawing out shock and hatred from my Mexican American co-workers.
And frankly, Slovania’s in between Serbia and Bosnia (=) rough situation. That country is a serious underdog.

Is anyone watching England-Algeria now?
Its embarrassing, the football is so poor, and the players look so tense. Ward-Green had better be good, because this is going to ruin my bloody weekend.

I don't really enjoy football much
And it seems that every time I try to give it another shot, I end up getting a game like this one!

Never watch England if you're looking for a good game - particularly at a World Cup.
This World Cup has just started getting pretty good and then this game has come along. USA-Slovenia was an absolute cracker, and seeing the Germans, the French and the Spanish all getting beaten in three days was thrilling.
All of the players just look so tense. They don’t look like they’re enjoying being out there, and I think much of that must stem from the ridiculous pressure we place on our football teams in England. It can’t help that the press absolutely slaughtered the entire team on the basis of a 1-1 draw.

How much do people in America
Generally care about the World Cup?

A lot. Still pissed about the game on so many different levels.

Out of interest, who's picking Green tomorrow night, and on what basis?
I’d love to see him win, but I can’t really see it happening in any way, shape or form.

At the weigh in and settled in my seat. Notably less busy than last fight and it probably will not be broadcast on espn.

7 total fight scheduled for tomorrow with the most notable being Steve chambers v Hector alatorre.
by Waldo Rastel on Jun 18, 2010 3:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
None of them are on showtime if that wasn’t obvious.
by Waldo Rastel on Jun 18, 2010 3:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I’d say the most notable is Kendall Holt-Jesse Feliciano.

How can you dislike Ward? He is really down-to-earth and a genuine nice dude.
by Waldo Rastel on Jun 18, 2010 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions
There’s something I don’t like about him, too. I can’t really pinpoint it. He’s a nice guy and I admire his skills but he rubs me the wrong way a little bit. Goossen’s “Andre Ward is a PPV attraction” line didn’t help, to be honest. He’s about the furthest thing from a PPV attraction. He’s known in one city in America.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
by Scott Christ on Jun 18, 2010 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah he is not going to attract a crowd outside Oakland, and saying he is a PPV attraction is ridiculous (Maybe they can pair him up with Dawson for the worst ratings ever by two really good fighters). At least Ward knows that he is only known in Oakland and really pushed Goossen to have the fights here in Oakland.
At the press conference Ward was wearing silver pumps to match his silver track suit. Nuff said.
by Waldo Rastel on Jun 18, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions
If Ward keeps performing well I’ll like him more and more. I already like him more than I used to. That generally happens. I like good fighters. And I hope he’s a big success and becomes a star.

I’ve been catching up on lots of movies lately. In the Loop has been my favorite, and I’ve also greatly enjoyed 44 Inch Chest, Big Fan and Moon. And Bronson and The Damned United.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
How was Moon?
That one’s available on demand.
I don’t get to see too many movies, but I’ve seen six of them that were nominated for best picture last year at this point, and frankly, I still think Invictus was better than any of them.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Moon is really good. Maybe Sam Rockwell’s best performance to date. Avoided most sci-fi cliches. Very tense.
I haven’t watched Invictus yet. Of the best picture noms I’ve seen The Blind Side (3/5), Avatar (2.5/5), Precious (2.5/5), Inglourious Basterds (4/5), District 9 (4/5)…I think that’s it. I still haven’t watched The Hurt Locker for some goddamn reason.

forget about the hurt locker, get crackin on A Serious Man. Top five Coen bros film if you ask me
the only movies i’ve seen lately are Ip Man (good/badass), Flashpoint (too much MMA rather than straight up kung fu), Up (already saw it, but just as good 2nd time), Fantastic Mr. Fox (for the third time, masterpiece), and Memento (for the 2nd time, masterpiece).
TV: finished The Wire (godly), Rome (less godly than the Wire but still awesome), and The Office-UK (hilarious obv). also holy shit at the Breaking Bad finale
Music: been mostly listening to Porcupine Tree lately, but the two new Rush songs have been destroying my soul as well. Also Imogen Heap’s album, Speak For Yourself, has now pushed itself into my top 10 all-time favorite albums.
Games: Alan Wake (crushes)

There's a lot of layers to it
I feel like someone could put together a criticism book on it, if they wanted to. You can watch it and enjoy it as just an entertaining movie, but there’s a lot of actual art and a lot of deeper meaning going on as well. It’s almost as if the film was a treatise on what Tarantino thinks film should be about (and the same can be said for Avatar with respect to James Cameron)
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
SC, I'm so impressed that you watched The Damned United! I didn't realise that was even available in the States!
The book is far better than the film, as good as the film is. David Peace is one heck of a writer, and I’d recommend pretty much all of his stuff. There’s something very modernist about his work, and he’s very different to anything else available these days.

Stare off is intense with ward starting the jawing. Crowd goes nuts and then Virgil and Jackson start jawing. Crowd gets whipped up into a frenzy. S-o-g s-o-g s-o-g!!!!
by Waldo Rastel on Jun 18, 2010 5:26 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I wish this was airing somewhere. I love it when fighters start jawing at each other. I don’t even care if it’s forced.
Ward started it which was the crazy part. Then Green started to come back at him a little bit but more playing around. Some camera guy asked them to face the cameras, Green turned Ward didn’t. Then Ward must have said something, cause Green instantly turned back and it was on! Virgil was talking serious smack at the presser, and I guess that overflowed into the Weigh-in. Specifically, Virgil and Jackson were talking some legit smack after the fighters separated.

Man, I dig your part of the world. My US road trip began in SF but we checked out a truck in Walnut Creek and hung out in Berkeley before setting off. Guerilla Cafe cool joint, awesome Mexican hot chocolate. Then there’s Oakland legends Machine Head who’ve been a huge influence.
Good luck to your man Ward, he’ll outclass Green IMO.

He has no power at all and should move down to cruiserweight.

Willis has muscles on top of muscles, but no power at all. I guess there is hope for me yet. He won’t be challenging any Klitchko’s anytime soon.
He’s also a 5’11, 214lb ‘heavyweight’. With no power. And not as slick as a Chris Byrd or an Eddie Chambers. Down a weight class, kiddo.
