This PPV is £5 here in England.
That’s a really excellent, good-value price for a fight like this. Amazing to think we pay less for Ward-Green than you guys would have to for, say, Holyfield-Botha.

We get ripped off even on the shows that are truly PPV worthy. The difference in pricing is stunning.

Yeah, it’s quite astonishing. The fact of the matter is that if Sky charged 40 quid for a PPV here, there would be very very very few purchases. By only charging 15 (and I say ‘only’ laced with irony) they can sell shitty fights like Khan-Barrera and Haye-Valuev to a much larger audience. Heck, Haye-Valuev sold 1,000,000 units. If HBO were to lower their prices to maybe 30 dollars, surely they’d be able to at least double, if not triple their buy rate?

Probably not, honestly. Haye is, as far as I can tell, a genuine major star in the UK. The only notable stars in boxing in America are Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Nobody else is even close. And if you go pound-for-pound, so to speak, I don’t think Mayweather or Pacquiao compare to the level of star Ricky Hatton was in the UK.

Yeah, you’re probably right. I guess the major difference between American fans of Floyd or Manny and British fans of Hatton is that whilst those two might have some diehard fans who follow them everywhere, the vast majority are casual fans (because you have so many more top boxers in the States), whereas Ricky Hatton had a huge diehard fanbase AND attracted masses of casual support too.

It’s not that we have so many more top boxers in the States, it’s that nobody gives a shit about any of them. We get excited when the third-rate ESPN network shows a clip of a weigh-in for anything that doesn’t involve Pacquiao or Mayweather.

Part of this is we have constant media media media media on so many other sports stars. Boxing ate its own tail long ago in the States and turned off a lot of long-time fans.

Its a similar scenario here, though. The sport pages in the press are taken up daily by 5 to 10 pages of football (at the moment, we get a daily 12 page football supplement in every major newspaper) and then 2 pages of cricket and/or rugby. The only time the boxing ever makes it in is for a British fighter in a world title fight, or the Jewish Chronicle provides updates on Dmitry Salita and Yuri Foreman. Heck, BBC barely even mentions British title fights on its website.

I think maybe the difference, to me, is in the way Sky treats its Friday Fight Night and the way ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights is treated here. Though the fights are of similar quality — and really, ESPN2’s are probably better most of the time — Sky presents every fight as if it matters. Which is part of the fun for me, but their commitment to the product is different.

I really liked Roger Ebert’s review:
Yeah, here’s this hit man, he lives like a samurai, he gets his instructions by pigeon, blah . . . blah . . . and then they start talking about the performances and how the director, Jim Jarmusch, is paying homage to Kurosawa and “High Noon.” But the man is insane! In a quiet, sweet way, he is totally unhinged and has lost all touch with reality. His profound sadness, which permeates the touching Whitaker performance, comes from his alienation from human society, his loneliness, his attempt to justify inhuman behavior (murder) with a belief system (the samurai code) that has no connection with his life or his world. Despite the years he’s spent studying The Way of the Samurai , he doesn’t even reflect that since his master doesn’t subscribe to it, their relationship is meaningless.

who? Switzer or Green? I saw Switzer at the Pacman-Clotty fight and he was not attended by a wife or girlfriend. He was sitting up front with Jerry Jones and Bob Arum and Troy Aikman.
My wife, who abolutely hates football and never watches it, loved Switzer and watched him on TV in post game interviews because she always felt he would someday twist off on camera and go psycho. He let his grandchild play with his handgun for god’s sake!

What do you see in Green that Kessler didn’t have? That’s not a baiting question, either, I’m genuinely curious. I actually don’t dislike Allan Green, but I don’t think he can win a decision over Ward because if the fight doesn’t get fiery I don’t think he can keep up with Andre’s superior skill set. I do think he can stop Ward if he’s on his game and he gets the opening and capitalizes on it. I actually think Green is pretty good the 25% of the time he’s truly at his best, but not on Ward’s level as a complete package.

Green is obviously more skilled than the one-dimensional Kessler. His problem is he’s content with just going through the motions. Which is an irritating problem. But I can’t see him coming at anything less than 100% focused tonight. I mean he’s talked about constantly being avoided (which is bullshit. I blame his manager’s inexperience for that). Well here’s his big chance. He’s talked to good of a game to not come out with his best.
Another thing is I think Kessler came in a little over confident against Ward. Ward was still a question mark coming in. Kessler I think expected him to fold against him. Only to find out (along with the rest of the world) that Ward really is a good fighter. Ward ain’t a question mark no more. Unlike Kessler, Green knows that coming in
If a man ain't found something worth dying for. He ain't fit to live.

crazy odds?
I’m seeing Ward -1100, Green +600? I like Ward to win, but that’s a great price for Green. (Apologies if betting talk is unwelcome here)
People can talk betting here. It’s as much a part of boxing as anything. Those odds are…actually about what I’d expect. This fight is no-win for bookies on paper. Green is 30 but still unproven (and thus unpredictable, potentially), Ward is red-hot.

They could have shown at least one undercard fight
Broadcast is slated for two hours. At least 45 minutes of which will be spent recapping past super six action. 20 minutes for fighter entrances and about 15 for post fight analysis. They could reduce the fluff and put on some undercard fights instead.
There’s nothing worth showing and considering Ward’s not exactly neon dollar signs at the gate (and Green ain’t gonna help) I’m sure nobody was too keen on dividing up any more TV money. Showtime’s probably technically overpaying for this as it is.

The original contract doesn’t stipulate locations. They’ve been agreed to in the back room, but they’re not set in stone. Still, unless they can get someplace in Vegas to fork over money for it, there’s nowhere else it makes sense to have Ward-Dirrell other than in Oakland.

Ward-Green R1

God, I hate when Gus Johnson reads quotes before the fights.
Ward with a quick left, Green just misses a right counter. Ward jabs to the body. And again. Ward gets into the clinch, and Green is complaining of a headbutt right away.
Left hook Ward, but Green eats it and tries to fire back. Jab to the body by Ward. Green isn’t leading any of the action at all and his counter attempts look a step slow. Really awful looking left hook attempt by Green. Ward is staying back, moving in now and again, and controlling the fight in the first round. Heads come together again.
Ward makes him miss the left hook again. Ward with a brief surge, but nothing big. Green looks really slow compared to Ward. Really slow.

First minute of this round is more of the same. Heads may have come together yet again. Short right from Green, but didn’t get a lot of zip on it. Maybe it’s just me but neither of these guys seem, uh, “in the zone.” They’re both a little lazy in there. Ward with a right, goes to the body, Green shoots a left hand in as Ward tries to back off.

Ward-Green R3

Some pretty spirited clinch wrestling to start the round. Uppercut from Ward gets Green’s attention. Ward digging around on him when they tie up. Right hand Ward. Ward pressuring Green onto the ropes, digging away in the clinch. Digging the forehead into the chest. Green just standing there. Ward strays a little low, but the action doesn’t stop. Ward is just physically bullying Allan Green and not letting him do anything. Right hand Ward. Green nailed to the body now. he looks absolutely lost in the ring. Absolutely lost. Ward is pounding on him.
Ward DRILLING to the body. Green has no clue what to do with him. He’s not even trying to get off the ropes. Just letting Ward lay on him and punish him. Green trying to throw back a bit, but can’t do anything. What the hell is Green even doing? What’s he hoping to accomplish here? Ward lands several shots to the body.
Green goes to the corner looking like someone just told him his dog died.
Ward 10-9

You could even score that 10-8. Green did nothing.

Ward-Green R4

Tarver is really taking Green to task, calling the excuses that are sure to come if this keeps up.
Ward looks very confident now, and loosened up. Right hand by Ward, and Green hurls his body toward Ward’s so he doesn’t get pinned on the ropes with nothing to do again. But to no avail — Green’s back on the ropes. Ward lets him off. Green is completely outclassed by Andre Ward so far. They’re not even in the same league.
Right hand Ward, now digging to the body again as they get close. Left hook by Green lands nicely! But Ward doesn’t back off, coming right back on him and taking the initiative again. Green with a little right hand near the bell. Better for Green, but it would have been hard to do worse than R3.

Mostly a dominant round for Ward again, outside of the two punches Green landed, which were probably the best punches of the round but not enough.

Ward-Green R5

Even when Ward isn’t so clearly outclassing Green, he’s just so much better. The way he’s able to move and make Green think forever, with thinking too much being a problem for Green as it is. Mixing it up a little more, but Green still failing to find any real rhythm. Right hand Ward. Green overthrows when he DOES think there’s an opening, landing nothing and getting hit with a loopy left in the process. Andre still has not gone southpaw. No need to.
Right hand Ward! Green will have another minute to think this over.

Ward-Green R6

Green gets put back on the ropes, and Ward punishes him to the body some more. Allan Green really needs to do something totally different than what he’s done so far. Ward with combination shots! Green buckles ever so briefly! Now he’s tying up again.
Ward starting to throw BIG shots to the head, really putting the pressure on. Green is out of his depth in a big way. Right hand! Left hook! Ward hammering him on the ropes! Green’s looking around like he wants out. I think he’s mentally collapsing here. RIGHT HAND! Ward again bullying and demolishing Allan Green. Just beating the crap out of him.
Left hook lands clean. And another, that one even better. Green shakes again as he gets off the ropes and is hit. Green looks completely overwhelmed by Ward. WICKED left hand by Ward! Green is mentally done.

I was wondering about that
The sort of damage Green’s taking could knock him out of the tournament. Particularly because Ward doesn’t seem interested in pressing for the KO — he’s giving Green just enough time to recover so that he can hurt him more.
It’s not the damage I’m worried about, it’s the fact that Green is going to go home and sulk. He’s getting completely embarrassed.

Ward-Green R7

Ward is really bouncing and throwing hard now. He knows he’s in complete control. Another flush right lands on Green. Green just stands there like he doesn’t know what to do. I mean he looks third-rate in there with Ward. This is an obscene mismatch at this point. He’s totally wasting Allan Green. Jab and a right by Ward. Green continues to just look at him.
Now Ward goes southpaw. Ward shoots a right to the body. Southpaw is when Ward generates more power. But now right back to orthodox before he can do much. Ward dominates another round.

Ward-Green R8

I’ve run out of things to say about this. Green doesn’t belong in the ring with Ward and any reputation Green has has been built simply by his own hype. Ward is punishing him and Green has absolutely no clue how to combat someone on this level. Ward is putting it on him on there.
Uppercuts are landing, and Green’s back on the ropes with 40 seconds to go in the round. Right hand and left hook from Ward. Green might as well quit. I’m serious. Unless he’s going to just go buck wild and try to turn this into a pier sixer, he’s got no hope.

I’m getting really tired of watching Green do his best to turtle up on the ropes. That’s been like 35% of this fight. Ward bullies him through another round and ends it beating Green’s ass. Green stares at him with blood pouring from his nose, like Andre Ward should be sorry for landing yet another punch a quarter second after the bell. Green’s done. He’s just thinking up excuses and wondering how he can lose the least face when he pulls out of fighting Kessler.

Ward continues making Green look bush league. Green has fallen for every single thing Ward has done in this fight. Every damn thing. Ward stalking Green now and just firing away. Gus thinks, with 1:12 left, that Green hasn’t thrown a punch in this round. He might actually be right. He definitely hasn’t thrown one with purpose.
Ward just sort of smacking Green around at this point. Green is hopelessly overmatched. Green constantly looks like he’s pissed off and wants to do something, but knows he can’t, so he just stews and thinks about it, and does nothing.

Hail a new gun fighter.
Ward’s my new favourite fighter, the kid can really fight on a technical level. What a treat to watch someone that can really fight on the inside , it’s a lost art in boxing. His outside work is excellent as well . Very , very versatile , he gives more looks a round than most modern fighters do in a career. The Dirrell fight will be very interesting because Dirrell has the best style in the super 6 to trouble Ward in my opinion . Green showed the same lack of grit against Miranda . Tarver is spot on . The only plausible way he could be Ring Magazine Super Middleweight Champion, at least in the tournament, is if jumps Bute in the next rankings and Kessler continues to win which would set up a rematch. It’d put Ward at #1 and Kessler at #3 but I still doubt that’d be a Ring Magazine Championship fight. He needs to, in all likelihood, fight Bute.
