CRBR- Requests?

Since I got quite a good reception for my first ever Classic RBR (Hagler/Roldan), I thought I would put this post up.

Classic Round-By-Round- Hagler vs Roldan

That RBR was a labour of love: I love Hagler, I love writing about boxing, and I wanted to see how well I could pull it off after reading some really great work from Brickhaus and SC on the live RBR's. I chose that specific fight for the following reason, which is quite contrived, but absolutely true.

I watched, years back, a tennis match between Andre Agassi and Mark Phillipoussis (I never spell that name right. How annoying is that?). After the first few service games each, I simply couldn't and wouldn't believe that Agassi could win the match; the big Aussie was smashing that serve down so fast and so accurately that I couldn't see a way for Agassi to beat him. Agassi won the first set 6-4 (I think) and even then, I simply refused to accept that Agassi could win the match, that serve was SO big. From memory (this was about 10 years ago, I'd guess) Agassi won in straight sets, breaking serve at least once in each set, returning from about 20 yards behind the baseline. The refusal to allow that massive weapon to demoralise him, to consign him to defeat, was amazing, and I remember feeling an awe during that match that I've rarely felt about any sport. There was simply no way he could win, and he won. Unreal. I'll explain the slightly dodgy parallel after the jump....

Star-divide

So, as I said, I'm a massive Hagler fan. I was going through his record on Boxrec (where many an enjoyable hour has passed me by) when I noticed the comment; "Hagler ruled down in 1st, the only official knockdown of his career" next to the Roldan fight. I was instantly intrigued, as I was sure Hagler had never been down. I'd never before seen the Roldan fight, and went looking on Youtube, that most valuable and game-changing tool for sports fans.

As I watched  the fight, I felt that same sense of awe creep in that I had felt during the Agassi/Scud match. Roldan was too brutish, too powerful, too bloody resilient: Surely Hagler had to fall in this fight? I already knew, of course, the result fo the fight, but I admired straight away the brawler in Roldan, and in the same way I watched Agassi pull apart Philippoussis, I watched Hagler battle back from a dodgy decision (the KD), and losing the first two rounds, and go on to dictate and dominate the fight, showing that his adversary's one massive weapon (or in Roldan's case, two massive weapons) were not going to be enough to defeat him.

I began writing the RBR for myself, as a labour of love. I never planned to show anyone, and was glad to be honest that I could read it back without cringing. I stopped halfway through, and read it back, wondering whether or not to continue with it. I'm not saying it is/was amazing, but when I read it back, I decided to let SC have a look, and see if he wanted to use it for the site. I'm truly grateful to him for his encouragement to finish it, and also his help in presenting the article the way he has: I gave him only text, and he created something a lot bigger from it. All the links, the photos, the 'bells and whistles' as he calls them, they were all his own doing, and I'm grateful.

Now, for the next part:

I am looking to write another Classic Round-By-Round in the not too distant future. I have a few fights in mind, which I'll name at the end of this post. What I'm looking for is a fight that is full of drama, of back-and-forth action. I'd like a "come back and win against all odds" style fight, or a real shocker where both guys simply couldn't keep their feet (a recent example would be Maidana vs Ortiz, what a brawl that was!!). Basically, I would like to write about a fight that gets people's nostalgia bursting, their pulses going and refreshes all sorts of pleasant memories.

So, I'm asking for requests. I cannot and will not promise that I'll do them all, and they have to be fights I can find the videos of. As I said, I have a few ideas, but my own preferences are not everyone else's cup of Earl Grey, and as such I'm happy to bow to a certain kind of democracy; if there is one that gets a resounding vote from a lot of people, and I can find the video, then I'll do it.

My ideas are:

Evander Holyfield vs Riddick Bowe III

Chris Eubank vs Michael Watson II   (a fight I'm somewhat reluctant to do, even though it was a great fight, but one of my friends has read the Hagler/Roldan RBR and asked me specifically for this one. If there is enough support for this, I'd do it, but....)

Prince Naseem Hamed vs Kevin Kelley

Marvellous Marvin Hagler vs Sugar Ray Leonard (this one I'm again reluctant to do, even though I've been asked, since I love Hagler and don't like Leonard, I'd be tempted to score it a shut-out for Hagler. Maybe I'll leave this to SC....)

Mike Tyson vs James 'Buster' Douglas

So. I'll leave it to you guys. So we all know where we are, if you have a new idea for a fight (one per post, for obvious reasons), then name it. If you see a post with a fight you'd really like to see RBR'd named in it, please 'rec' it. The post with the most recs in a week, I'll do. Rec as many as you like, name as many as you like, but please, keep the naming to one per post, otherwise I'll not know which one is being recced.

Cheers. :)

I would like Prince Naseem-Kevin Kelley the best out of the ones listed though.

That was a classic example of how to stop a guy from jumping in and out during a fight (punch him in his face and knock him down!).

Haha!!

That’s really funny. :)

The ones I listed aren’t the only ones I’ll consider, they are just the ones that came to mind when I was thinking of doing another one, and two of them were requests from other people.

Damn.

I just realised I’ve left one of my list off of my list, so to speak.

One of my favourite fights of all time:

Tommy Morrison vs Donovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock.

For pure drama and entertainment, this one is one of those scraps I’ll never forget.

I have talked to Tommy about this one and he was very candid about how it ended.

He said that had it gone two more punches, he would have been gassed.

If anyone can find a copy of it

I’ve ALWAYS been curious about Hagler-Seales 2. I have no idea if the fight was even televised (I know 3 was, but don’t know about the first two), but the scoring on the fight was just so screwy (99-99, 99-99, 98-96) that I’ve always wondered what actually happened in the fight.

That's the one with the debated stoppage?

I’m not sure about that one, simply because;
1. what I have to say about the stoppage would be uber-controversial, and
2. jrok will slaughter me for it.

I am so adamant and believe fully that that stoppage was wrong, and unjustifiable, that I couldn’t refrain from really sticking it to the ref. I know it’s a hotbed of controversy, and at least to begin with I’d be keen to do fights that aren’t going to get me absolutely slated.

Also, considering the biggest talking point of the whole fight was the last 4 seconds (or not, as the case may be), I think I’d rather do fights which were remarkable all the way through.

Now, Tweek, boxing is a Man sport. There is nothing in the world more Man than boxing. It is Man at his most Man. So when you spar with Ned here, just dig deep into that most Man part of you. (Uncle Jimbo, South Park: Tweek vs Craig)

by Chaos100 on Jun 21, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I suppose I mean:

If I was writing a feature, I’d write it on the stoppage.

If I’m writing a complete RBR, then I’d rather do another fight, since 95% of what I wrote would be forgotten right away, and all discussion would centre on the stoppage.

Now, Tweek, boxing is a Man sport. There is nothing in the world more Man than boxing. It is Man at his most Man. So when you spar with Ned here, just dig deep into that most Man part of you. (Uncle Jimbo, South Park: Tweek vs Craig)

by Chaos100 on Jun 21, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason I think RBR would be interesting

Is because I feel like people forget how much damage Chavez really was doing to Taylor over the course of the fight. Everyone knows about the stoppage, but it’s what led up to the stoppage that caused what happened to happen.

But I can understand refraining from that one. Another one that would be tough to stomach, because of the results, but was a damn great fight that people forget about was Benn-McClellan. I feel like if the outcome of that one didn’t turn out the way it did, you’d consistently see that one on top 10 fights of all time lists.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

by Brickhaus on Jun 21, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree.

Benn/McClellan was another I was asked to do, but I refused point blank. I don’t know why, but the thought of doing that one is a whole lot worse than Eubank/Watson. Maybe it’s due to the fact that Watson has never held a grudge against Eubank, but MCClellan and his family hate Nigel Benn even now. I don’t know. I just always preferred the Eubank fight, of the two.

I found myself downloading Hagler-Leonard earlier…. I’m going to end up doing it, aren’t I? lol

The Benn/McClellan classic was my first pick Chaos.

Subsequent events aside; it was such an intense, emotion-charged fight – the atmosphere alone was almost surreal – rarely matched even in London. If reviewed by a sharp boxing mind, on a purely round by round basis, the depth of material makes for compelling reading. But I respect your call.

As a Hagler fan you must love the Mugabi fight, how about that one?

nice stuff.

Love the “my guy can’t win this one” but then he does. just triumphs of the human spirit, cause you know they are feeling it somewhere inside also, but they don’t let it manifest itself.

go for the Chavez vs Taylor…as stated it was a great fight even w/o the finish. the rbr will illustrate the point on how much that fight did swing.

I won’t say do it for every rbr you do, but I would be interested in the many of the controverial and strange ending b/c so often the actual meat of the fight is forgotton. As an example I’ve grown hazy on the tyson vs holyfield mess. I know hoyfield was fighting him close to dirty and tough if not all the way dirty, but I forget how much work both got in before tyson blew up. I would enjoy reading rbr on that one. Just a suggestion.
