Open Thread: Latin Fury 15 featuring Chavez-Duddy

After much deliberation, I decided I simply could not reason with paying $40 for a show main evented by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and John Duddy, at least not without an attractive undercard, and this undercard is not attractive. The main event runs too big a risk of being a stinker capping off a stinky night for me to dig into my wallet this time.
But this open thread will serve as a discussion center for the card. So if you're ordering or watching, swing by and talk about the fights.

And the Devil is out shoveling snow… incredible!
Just kidding. This is abysmal even by absymal standards. I’m thinking back over the years, and this actually might have been the worst $40 you ever would have spent on a fight.
Although, mediocre guys can sometimes turn out incredible fights. If it turns out to be one of those, it’ll be a shame for us to miss it.

I paid becuase I want to see the fight as it happens. I can write about it better that way. I love to write about fights I have seen when they actually happened whether live in person
or live on TV. There is just something different—hard to explain but for me, it’s the way it is.
Pray for Nick Charles
no I know what you mean
I’m even going to try to watch (at least until people come over to drink) — just can’t afford to be paying for this particular load. Given some of the loads I HAVE paid for, I’m not feeling too awful about it.

Most Mexican fans detest JCCJr with a fire of a thousand suns…
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
Well, someone’s buying these fights enough for Arum to keep headlining Latin Fury shows with him, so I doubt it’s “most.”

Ted: Rhona Mitra and I had dinner this week, she told me she is a bit embarassed by her new TV show The Gates, but that it pays pretty well.
Yeah not a bad little fight. Villa giving Sanchez this much trouble doesn’t speak well of Salvador, but then everyone knows he’s not a genuine prospect anyway.

That should knock Sanchez off of TV screens for good. Sanchez is just not very good and I’m surprised Villa actually got the decision.

he hasn’t had a step-up since his debut. Not looking for a radical jump, just something that isn’t a foregone conclusion. Looking forward to watching him for years to come though.

What I like is something they were talking about earlier: he’s putting guys away in every conceivable manner. He’s not just a left hook or a brutal right or whatever.

From a selfish fan's point of view
I’m anxious to see him in gradually tougher tests. Frequent step-ups is not the TR style, and I get why they avoid them, but as a fan it would make following his career a lot more thrilling.

I would be curious enough that I’d pay for Barrera-Morales IV, in part because I think they’re both so shot the fight could be pretty good, but what the hell is Barrera going to do at 140? Fight Marquez again? Rematch Khan?

Unless De Jesus has regressed. And they passed that shit off as a main event on German TV. I can’t even remember his name, but he was by far the least skilled fighter I’d ever seen in a title fight.

Both landed some good punches in the sixth, Duddy had the best punch of the fight with a right that shook Junior, who quickly recovered nicely. Junior’s left hand has been whipping Duddy’s head around a fair amount. Duddy’s looking better as he goes along, I think.

It’s a pretty fun fight. I’m very pleased that they both came to mix it up and scrap. I really feared they would both be tentative, but I’m liking what they’re doing. I still say this is Chavez’s best performance (eclipsing uh, the fight with Ray Sanchez I guess), and Duddy is Duddy.
This could be a rivalry, even. Top Rank knows these guys aren’t going to be P4Pers or anything. That’s why they’re fighting now.

Duddy’s still working hard, but he can’t get out of the way of anything, and his volume bursts aren’t really landing at all. Duddy’s getting hit by every punch Chavez has and starting to get beaten up a bit. His legs are starting to go, too. If Chavez really goes for the kill in the 11th I think he can get Duddy out.
6-4 Chavez (96-94)
