Open Thread: Latin Fury 15 featuring Chavez-Duddy

App_full_proxy_php_medium

After much deliberation, I decided I simply could not reason with paying $40 for a show main evented by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and John Duddy, at least not without an attractive undercard, and this undercard is not attractive. The main event runs too big a risk of being a stinker capping off a stinky night for me to dig into my wallet this time.

But this open thread will serve as a discussion center for the card. So if you're ordering or watching, swing by and talk about the fights.

And the Devil is out shoveling snow… incredible!

Just kidding. This is abysmal even by absymal standards. I’m thinking back over the years, and this actually might have been the worst $40 you ever would have spent on a fight.

Although, mediocre guys can sometimes turn out incredible fights. If it turns out to be one of those, it’ll be a shame for us to miss it.

no I know what you mean

I’m even going to try to watch (at least until people come over to drink) — just can’t afford to be paying for this particular load. Given some of the loads I HAVE paid for, I’m not feeling too awful about it.

Tomas Villa via unanimous decision

That should knock Sanchez off of TV screens for good. Sanchez is just not very good and I’m surprised Villa actually got the decision.

And fifth round to Duddy for me. Got Chavez to fight him in close where Duddy’s better.

3-2 Chavez (48-47)

Most of the really telling blows have come from Junior.

not that round

Chavez had a couple nice ones, but Duddy really rocked him with that right.

Both landed some good punches in the sixth, Duddy had the best punch of the fight with a right that shook Junior, who quickly recovered nicely. Junior’s left hand has been whipping Duddy’s head around a fair amount. Duddy’s looking better as he goes along, I think.

Duddy round.

This is NOT great stuff, but they are evenly matched. I like that.

It’s a pretty fun fight. I’m very pleased that they both came to mix it up and scrap. I really feared they would both be tentative, but I’m liking what they’re doing. I still say this is Chavez’s best performance (eclipsing uh, the fight with Ray Sanchez I guess), and Duddy is Duddy.

This could be a rivalry, even. Top Rank knows these guys aren’t going to be P4Pers or anything. That’s why they’re fighting now.

pretty entertaining fight in general so far

Chavez’s energy seems to be slipping. Still landing some decent shots, but Duddy’s attack is really consistent.

I figure Chavez is up 5-2 on all the official cards right now. At least.

There is one card that has Junior pitching a shutout

It’s genetic.

Reading your takes on this i think I should watch it with the volume down… the announcers are making it seem as if jr is basically pitching a shutout (maybe a little exagerated, but still, not consistent with what I’m reading here)

by Apprentice on Jun 27, 2010 12:20 AM EDT reply actions

Now that was a Chavez round. Duddy took a lot of clean shots and got staggered near the bell.

Chavez was using a jab early that looked quite good, or at least good enough to neutralize Duddy. Why he hasn’t used it more is beyond me, because Duddy’s a sucker for a good jab.

Duddy’s still working hard, but he can’t get out of the way of anything, and his volume bursts aren’t really landing at all. Duddy’s getting hit by every punch Chavez has and starting to get beaten up a bit. His legs are starting to go, too. If Chavez really goes for the kill in the 11th I think he can get Duddy out.

6-4 Chavez (96-94)

Duddy’s corner tells him he needs a knockout to win. They’re almost certainly correct. I doubt any official card is as close as mine.

Duddy can take a punch.

He reminds me of Aran Ryan, and JCCJr. does not have a star punch in him.

by El Destruyo on Jun 27, 2010 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

The best punches are ALL coming from Junior now. Duddy, bless him, is still hanging in there and fighting, but he’s getting rocked around.

I don't think you can really make a case that Duddy won

as much as i loathe JCC Jr., Duddy at best drew.

The commentators are talking crap about him answering questions and his heart, and how these guys are good fighters. It’s all crap.

Chavez-Duddy scores

120-108
116-112
117-111

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision

120-108 is absurd, but expected and called in this very thread.

A Chavez fought in the Alamodome, and deserved his decision victory, instead of getting bailed out by a bullshit draw. This is what we’re left to call justice.
