Mayweather discusses possibility of taking time off

Floyd Mayweather Jr. may take time off from boxing. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

In an interview with the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he'll be taking time off. The video is now removed from YouTube, but Luis Cruz transcribed this quote in a FanPost:

Mayweather: "At this particular time, Floyd Mayweather is taking probably a year off, a couple of years off from the sport of boxing. I don't really know what the future holds for me at this particular time, but you know, I'll probably take a few years off."

Interviewer: "He said he wants to see you fight Pacquiao."

Mayweather: "Like I said before, I'm taking a couple years off."

Would I be shocked by this actually happening? No. Floyd has retired three times. He retired after beating Baldomir, after beating Oscar, and after beating Hatton. I half-expected him to retire after beating Marquez, and mentioned it as a possibility were he to beat Mosley, which he did.

I don't have any horse in this Mayweather-Pacquiao race. I'm sick to death of talking about both sides and their possible matchup. I don't expect that fight to happen for a great number of reasons. I think both sides have shown a great unwillingness to fight the other, no matter what anyone on either side says. I don't believe in either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao when it comes to them truly wanting to fight the other man. If they did, it would have been signed by now.

I'm just tired of discussing these two. There are fighters out there who want to fight. Fighters who are fighting. These two are boxing celebrities at this point. Congressman Manny Pacquiao and TV's Money Mayweather.

If their goal is to drag this out as long as they need to for people to stop caring as much as they should, I think they're getting there. There is hype and build for any fight, but they've filled the balloon with as much hot air as it's going to take. That thing's ready to burst.

Still not a good reason to ignore it on a speculative basis.

Heh. Grown feathers is a good line.

I also have a statement.

At this particular time, El Destruyo is taking probably ten years off, maybe fifteen years off from the sport of paying any attention to Floyd Mayweather. I don’t really know what the future holds for me and him at this particular time, but you know, I’ll probably take a decade off.

Probably

Then he’ll be back faded and old, even shot, and get beaten by a truly lesser fighter. I really see this happening, as he has been so bad at managing his money in the past.

I think they've about worn me out

Until they sign to fight I just won’t care about this back and forth. The fight I’m really pumped for now is Abraham v Froch.

If Mayweather does retire it just looks like he’s trying to imitate Sugar Ray Leonard. The difference is Ray actually fought top contenders in their prime and Mayweather is now past is best, imo, and past the stage where he can afford to take layoffs.
He’s got a real crappy way of treating the fans and he deserves all the abuse he gets, imo.
I too am getting sick of hearing about these two talking but not fighting.

Father and Son

Conversation between father and son:
Father: Hey Li’l Floyd, I heard that you are again retiring for another 2 years.

Son: Yes dad, I have to. I cannot think of anymore excuses so I decided to retire again. You know very well that if I fight Manny, he’s gonna destroy, puverize me in the ring and I would not let that happen.

Father: Good alibi son. My concern is that, except for your die hard fans, all other people will say you are a chicken duck and afraid of Pacquiao.

Son: I don’t care what they say, they are just envious of me, I am the greatest boxer of all time. Pacquiao is going to retire after one more fight and that’s the time I will come back and fight again with someone I can beat easy. I am a coward but I’m very smart.

Father: You are a genius son, just like me, like father like son.

Son: Thanks dad, you are my idol.

I wish "May-or-may-not" weather would just Fk off.

Does he really think that we will stop watching the sport if he retires?? He is one arrogant little shit, I for one, couldn’t give a toss if I never saw him fight again. I’m sure boxing will struggle on without him.

You know what

Everyone wishes that he would stop making such an ass of himself and stop insulting us fans. But to be honest, i have watched everyone of his fights and i feel satisfied with his career to date. Seriously, he is one of the most phenomenal boxers ever. I’m sick of getting my hopes up for him and pacman. He loves attention. The Media should drop him and then he will want to fight just to get back in the limelight.

I think Mayweather's boxing abilities

Are astounding, and that’s why I think it’s a great shame that he hasn’t really got a great legacy. I don’t say this to attack him,or belittle his skills, but rather to bemoan the fact he has partially wasted his potential by fighting the likes of WW Marquez, and Baldomir.

I can’t se how you can find that satisfying.

Everyone

Takes tune ups or coast fights. Baldomir beat Judah, he was a champ with a decent fan base. It was a viable option for Floyd to take an easy belt. I mean, he just finished with Mitchell and a tough fight with Judah. Baldomir was not a bad pick. But, WWMarquez was just redonkulous. He picked him for PPV numbers and to show that he could beat the man who drew with paqiaou. WW Marquez and Emanual Augusus are the only two flaws.

by FrontHandMan on Jun 10, 2010 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

It's less about flaws

And more about actual, relative accomplishments.
Sure, Baldomir beat Judah, but that doesn’t make him good ,seeing as Judah looked cautious and overly-defensive in that fight. Baldomir was pants, not the sort of person you fight to contribute to your claim as p4p number one!
I’m not one of these people who says that Mayweather ducked everyone, or has never fought anyone good, but I would say that the number of very good fighters he’s fought is pretty close to 0. At least, very good fighters he fought on reasonable terms.
