Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Yuri Foreman v. Miguel Cotto
Tonight at 10:15pm EDT, Yuri Foreman will defend his 154-pound alphabet title against Miguel Cotto live from Yankee Stadium on HBO. In the co-feature, junior middleweight prospects Vanes Martirosyan and "Mean" Joe Greene will face off. Even if you're not that excited by either fight, the Yankee Stadium angle is going to be very cool and decidedly different, and I personally think the main event is a very interesting matchup on paper, even if not a likely great fight. Join us tonight!

For some reason, I’d been under the impression that the Rangers didn’t play day games.

Anyone watch FNF last night?
Jon Sciambi was probably the worst boxing announcer I’ve ever heard….although the Fight Night Club guy (Mario Solis?) runs closely. I hope that was Sciambi’s debut. Doesn’t matter because he is just as dull and boring on basketball anyway.

Martirosyan-Greene R1

Greene pressuring early, but Vanes hits him with a little left hook. Jab by Greene. Right hand Vanes. Greene looks sloppy as hell, but that’s usual for him. He’s oddly sloppy for a guy who had some amateur pedigree. He’s interesting to watch for sure.
Very tentative first couple of minutes from Martirosyan. Left by Greene, Martirosyan comes back with a flurry but doesn’t land square. Right hook Greene. Low blow by Greene, and clearly low at that. Not intentional and everyone knows that, but it was definitely low. Vanes has five minutes.
Roy and Jim and Max all praise Steve Smoger. I think Steve’s on his way to becoming known as clearly the best ref in the game. Martirosyan lands a little near the end of the round after his break.
Greene 10-9

Martirosyan-Greene R2

Replay shows the low blow wasn’t QUITE as low as it seemed. It was borderline low, I think, but not terrible. Roy pointed it out. Please stay, Roy. Please stay.
Martirosyan goes to the body, this time Greene reacts a bit. Martirosyan with a right hand and a nice one. Right uppercut by Vanes. Left hook to the body by Vanes. Right hook by Greene upstairs. This pace isn’t electric, and they’re a little messy together so far, but it’s without holding or any of that, so that’s good.
Greene with a very high guard as Martirosyan pointlessly rams his fist into it.

Martirosyan-Greene R3

Both try to shoot in with their lead power hands, Vanes with a right, Greene with a left, neither landing clean. Martirosyan’s defense is sloppy as hell. Lampley thinks he’s thinking offense, I think he’s just not that good defensively. There’s also a question of whether he struggles with southpaws after Ouma and now the first couple rounds here, but it’s early in this one.
Martirosyan with a right hand, Greene pulled right back on that and got hit. There’s another right. Greene with a 1-2 ending with a nice left. Martirosyan goes to the body. This is an odd fight. Neither guy is establishing much, both have very leaky defense, both missing most of their big attempts.

Neither of these guys are cutting much of a pace with their workrate, neither particularly accurate, both a little lazy really. Good matchup on paper that thus far isn’t turning into much of a fight.
Jab and a right from Vanes. Low blow from Martirosyan, and Greene will get his time this time. That one appeared low, but so did the first one. Vanes, Max says, is telling his trainer Freddie Roach he did indeed go low. Roy explains that these shots don’t hurt all that bad.
Good jab by Vanes. He’s slowly but surely outclassing Greene, I’d say.

Chopping right from Vanes. Right hook from Greene. Joe just isn’t showing a lot of fire. Or much fire at all. Both of these guys are willing to throw long, slow shots. The fight is in a lull overall. Greene makes an idiotic looking charge with a left hand and falls down. That was hideous. Was he trying to impress Roy?
Uppercut Vanes, right hand Greene. I’ll say this: Jim, Max and Roy are the best the HBO team has been in a long time. They’re at least calling the fight.

The lunges these guys are making look just awful. There’s a right from Greene as Vanes is completely open after a lunge. Uppercut from Vanes grazes Greene. There’s something about this fight that feels off. It might just be me. Straight left from Greene. It feels like neither is going full-bore, even tactically full-bore. I’m not trying to dis either fighter, but it’s an odd fight to watch.
Keep in mind I’ve had a few. Maybe it’s me. It’s probably me.
Greene bleeding from the mouth, I think, and drilled with a right hand. Greene’s defense is awful. I like the kid, but he does not look totally ready for this fight. Some might be rust, but he’s always been a little strange as a total package.
And now both of them wind up on the ground.

Martirosyan-Greene R10

Greene fighting with little urgency, Lampley and Jones point out that he’s looked at the TV screen in center field twice. Roy calls his THE MISSILE. His what I’ll leave to the history books when this is archived on the interweb.
Martirosyan more active again this round. He’s probably way up but he’s still outworking Greene, and it’s not because Greene’s way up. Greene looks at the scoreboard again, and like it might be written in a shitty movie, is knocked down for it.

Foreman-Cotto R1

Cotto with a jab. Right by Foreman. Yuri is so much bigger than Miguel. SO much bigger. Two jabs by Cotto seem to affect Foreman greatly. I don’t think Yuri is ready for this jelly. Right hand Cotto. Yuri flies back again on a Cotto jab. …Yuri is out of his depth.
Cotto with a left hook, then one to the body, neither totally clean. Foreman doing very little, Cotto with a right hand. I think we’re seeing a really good littler man against a decent bigger man. The first round was ALL Miguel Cotto.
Cotto 10-9

Foreman-Cotto R2

Cotto with a left to the body. Another stiff jab from Miguel. It says a lot that Miguel is outjabbing Yuri. Cotto knocks him back with another jab. Foreman is showing how completely unremarkable he is. Cotto is just much better.
But here comes Foreman finally. Right hand Cotto shakes Foreman again! Left hand by Cotto! Cotto jabbing again. Left hook Yuri, no response from Miguel. Cotto’s too good, and he’s going to put Yuri on his ass sooner than later.

I think it is an obvious and really good matchup.

Final thoughts.
Both fighters kinda won tonight, assuming that Foreman’s legs aren’t completely gone. If they are, whatever, he goes with G_d. Shame the undercard sucked, but a good night of fighting all the same. Free Roy Jones!
Yuri with the heart of a lion
It was hard to watch him continue for me, but I’ll give props where they’re do: dood fought on with guts.
Perhaps lost in all of the general awesomeness
is that Cotto looked pretty good tonight. Granted Foreman isn’t Pac (or even Clottey), but for all the cries for his head…yeah, not so much.
Cotto's Future.
I really like the idea of a fight with Andre Berto next, though I wonder if they’d have it at 147 or at a catch-weight in between. If not that, then maybe a title defense at 154 against Cintron. I have to believe that the absolute fallback option would be defending his new trinket against Vanes Martirosyan. I’ve heard Paul Williams, but I’m not entirely comfortable with that match-up. Thoughts?

this fight accomplished most if not all of Arum and HBO's objectices
It got Foreman in the limelight….and he surprised everyone with heart rarely seen.
It gave Cotto a safe opponent to re-build upon. With little to fear, he was able to practice some new…and old… technique and regain confidence at the same time.
Miguel looked good but he still gets hit flush too often. His face bruises more…and swells faster.
all told, it’s great to see him back but I didn’t see anything to suggest that he is a force to be reckoned with by the elite in either division, the welters or the junior middles.
Cintron is perfect.....for both men
Great for promoters and the networks as well. Two top PR fighter fighting for island supremacy.
now if only Cintron can finish something he starts without the drama
