New Chapter for cotto

First of all a big well done to Mr Cotto, the former two time champion and now three time champ proved many critic's wrong (myself included) by stopping the previously unbeaten Yuri Forman, but i think it's important to put the win into perspective. Forman while unbeaten had only beaten one fighter of note,a faided Daniel Santos, he has been well guided by Promoter Bob Auram (Cotto's Promoter), The fact is if you lack power at Welter and above you will need to be a supreme mover and a superb boxer to stand a chance of survial at top level, Hector Camacho springs to mind. Despite the question marks Cotto proved there's is plenty of fight left. So how far can he progress in the LightMiddles, the division is not on fire right now, Unbeaten Vanes Martirosyan continues to improve, Ryan Rhodes is on a good run, Kermit Cintron may fancy his chances but two names stand out a rematch with disgraced Antonio Margarito would be a big seller, a fight a think Cotto could win given Margarito's poor come back bout, and of course Paul the Punisher Williams would jump at the chance to face Cotto. If Stewart continues to work with the Miguel then that can only be good and we can enjoy the man that's provided us with so much excitment for a while longer.

He needs to stay away from Angulo and Kirkland – the rest could be interesting.

Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez are much more dangerous, imo.
I think Miguel against Angulo or Kirkland would make for really good fights.

Agreed

Angulo is slower enough than Margarito that I think Cotto could outbox him for a full 12 instead of getting caught and tired out late. Kirkland I’ll reserve judgment on until he gets out of prison. I’ll be surprised if he’s the same as he was before.

I think Angulo and Kirkland punch on a different level than Cotto, which doesn’t really address your argument.

Angulo’s improved his boxing, he’s really learned how to cut off the ring as we saw against Julio. But the bottom line for me in those fights is that both Kirk and Angulo throw plenty of punches and every time Cotto fights, he gets hit. His defense just isn’t good. And that’s ok if you’re a young Cotto at 147. But as an aging fighter who is slowing down, against those two guys, I think he gets chopped down. Add to that the fact that he tends to gas late spells trouble.

Admittedly, I’m something of a resident Angulo “hater,” but I didn’t really see a ton of improved boxing skill from Angulo. I think the version of Cotto we saw against Foreman, who did a good job of keeping up with his opponent’s lateral movement, would box Angulo’s ears off.

Then again, I picked Foreman to beat Cotto, so what the hell do I know :)

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jun 7, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

does he have better endurance than Julio? Can he hit as hard as Julio? I’m not sure Cotto can get Angulo’s respect in order to keep him from just walking Cotto down.

And as SC said below, Cotto WILL get hit by Angulo.

Anyway – we may see it happen.

Who knows how in shape and rusty Kirkland is. And IMO Cotto could beat Angulo. He needs to stay away from Sergio Martinez. Everyone else he has a chance.

by GoldenSt8OfMind on Jun 8, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

i think Cotto could beat Williams

Williams doesn’t have a lot of power and sloppy defense on top of it. If Cotto could begin with some body shots, this fight would be his to lose, imo.

Cotto has said he will never fight Margarito again, which I completely agree with. He should definitely stay away from Martinez, who would eat him alive.

by thp0344 on Jun 7, 2010 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

By some accounts, Paul Williams is 6’3. Cotto might be 5’7. Now admittedly, Williams doesn’t use his height the way he could/should, but I struggle to see how Cotto could even get inside to land meaningful body shots.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jun 7, 2010 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

in fighting

I’ve always really liked how hard williams in-fights. He would be easy for cotto to find. But though, as much as was made out of Cotto’s body shots with justification, I don’t think he would succeed inside against Williams. He looked like the same-old cotto to me. Which is by no means a bad thing. Yes, I think he would beat an Angulo, and give many others at least a good run. I think williams would be too much.

I’m not saying he is finished at all, but Cotto already goes down as a warrior who fought them all, and always exciting. He fights, I’m there. He goes in a list of guys I can’t watch enough. (Arreola, Froch, Adamek…

If only they could get Margarito in the ring for little-to-no money, I would love to see Cotto kick his ass. But since Margarito obviously isn’t going to fight for free, I would vote for Cotto to go back down to 147 and face anyone other than Pacquiao.

by taco pal on Jun 7, 2010 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

We talked about this in the other thread, but I too would love to see Cotto-Margarito II.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jun 7, 2010 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Good points totally understand as far as Mararito goes but i’d still like to see it , Martinez would be a big mistake, Kirkland can’t be considered until he’s back in the picture, Angulo is a danger but i agree could be out boxed as for Williams yes he is hittable but has also proved he has heart and a chin, his work rate would pose big problems for Cotto i could see him paying a heavy price trying to get inside.

by ybsteam on Jun 7, 2010 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

I think he could do well against Angulo, but only if he can handle power shots from a junior middleweight with some thump. Because though Angulo is slower than all hell, he WILL hit Cotto at some point given Angulo’s pressure.

I would like to see Berto-Cotto or Berto-Mosley at 147 most. I wanna see how good Andre really is. I would like to see Cotto-Mosley II, actually, but they’d put it on PPV and it doesn’t really belong there.

I wouldn’t even mind seeing Cotto-Clottey II. The first fight was fun.

by taco pal on Jun 7, 2010 5:43 PM EDT reply actions

At times, it was a damn good fight. But I think Cotto is looking for big dollar fights at this point, and Clottey excites/draws no one. Whether he likes it or not, Cotto-Margarito II does have the potential to rake in the money. I’d happily fork over PPV for it.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jun 7, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. A Clottey rematch might be a good fight to keep in reserve until next year’s Puerto Rican Day parade. For other guys who will generate money regardless of when they fight, it would make more sense to schedule them on other dates.

by taco pal on Jun 7, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Cotto-Cintron might make some sense money wise as a all-Puerto Rican showdown, particularly in New York.

by The Boxer Rebellion on Jun 7, 2010 6:14 PM EDT reply actions

I think Cotto looked good, despite his opponent being vastly overrated. Foreman was 28-0 before that fight. What 28 guys did he beat to earn an undefeated record?? He was obviously protected throughout his career. Yeah and I know he showed heart and courage and all, but that doesn’t equal to skill. I had Cotto winning before the injury happened. Cotto-Manny is a waste. Manny will dominate him again. Cotto Floyd is a waste,Cotto wouldn’t touch Floyd the whole fight. Cotto is too slow. Cotto-Martinez, or Williams, Cotto is not ready for them at that weight, he’ll lose there too. Cotto’s opponents are very limited. He cant fight the elite guys because he will lose badly, but he cant go around fighting scrubs either… I would like to see Cotto Margo 2… Maybe Cotto can get his revenge against Margo without his bricks.

Cotto is a future hall of famer but would anyone have him in there all time top 20 Wetler weights? off the top of my head top 30 looks about right.

Boxing misses James Kirkland.

Hopefully, when he gets out he has something left. He’s needed in the sport.

I’ve heard rumors that he’ll be out this year, as early as August.

SC? Brick? – heard any of that?

New Chapter but Same Book

Miguel’s days at the very top are behind him but I do hope with smart match-making he chooses good fights and makes plenty of hay. He deserves it.

Angulo is a great match-up. With his experience and skill he should, assuming he can hurt a true Jr Middle, be able to take Angulo long. Angulo is slow as hell and would be right in front of MC ready to trade, so I would love to see this one.

Because you mentioned two potential matchups, with a '-' in the middle of the guys' names.

Agree--
New Chapter but Same Book

until I see what being consistently hit by a JM who can punch a little does to his face.

I thought he looked better at the start of the Manny fight then he did the other night.
But I also hope that Miguel makes himself some good money in the next year or so.

by Don From Prov on Jun 8, 2010 9:05 AM EDT reply actions

I think he was definitely more explosive in the beginning of the Pac fight, but I don’t necessarily agree that that’s better. Cotto used to be a slow starter. It would take him a few rounds of patience and studying before he got into his groove. That’s when he was indestructible. When he began “starting fast”, his career started going downhill.

I was really glad to see Cotto being cautious and patient. It reminded me of how he used to be before. He seemed relaxed and focused.

I do think that Cotto may be going in the direction of Israel Vazquez, where the skills and the power is still there, but the skin isn’t. Obviously, Cotto’s eyes are not nearly as bad as Israel’s, but he’s cutting and swealing way too easily and if he gets cut early, he may not survive against a good finisher.

Cotto is on a slide. Only gets worse .

Only a very slight slide

He’s still damn good.

It's like when you talk about a baseball player's career

going into a slide. With some (actually, the vast majority of) players it’s a death knell when they lose a tick off their reflexes, speed or vision. But for some guys it just takes them from perennial MVP contender to solid all-star for a few years before fading into mediocrity and their careers close.

Cotto’s still a very good fighter. He was never ZOMGDABESSSSTEVAHH!!! but he has been, and remains a top-tier fighter in that weight class.

ZOMGDABESSSSTEVAHH!!!

If that’s an acronym, I’d love to know what it means. :)

If it’s not, then I’d love to know how to pronounce it. ;)

Cotto is my favorite boxer, the one that got me into the sport. It was exciting watching him beat up on Foreman, but he was obviously at least a step above the kid in skill.

I’d like to see him win a couple more big fights before he calls it quits. If he could convince Margorito to fight for dirt and beat the tar out of him it would be awesome.
