Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Matthew Hatton v. Yuriy Nuzhnenko
Today at 5pm EDT, Bad Left Hook will provide live, round-by-round coverage, scoring and analysis of the European welterweight title fight between Matthew Hatton (39-4-2, 15 KO) and Yuriy Nuzhnenko (30-1-1, 14 KO) from the Bolton Arena, live on Sky Sports.
The co-feature will see British prospect Scott Quigg (18-0, 12 KO) take an easy fight against Gavin Reid (6-6-1, 3 KO). The 21-year-old Quigg has real talent, but still hasn't faced a legitimate opponent, and he's not starting today.
Hatton-Nuzhnenko is maybe the most evenly-matched fight of the weekend, and could be one of the best, too. Neither have big power, but Nuzhnenko should be expected to fight hard given that he's on the road for this title shot, and Hatton always fights hard.
Dave Oakes of The Boxing Bulletin previewed the fight, as did we the other day.

I’ve got to be honest, I just don’t think Matthew Hatton is very good. I like him as a guy, and would love for him to win this fight and then go on and win a paper title, but I just can’t see it happening. I think Nuzhnenko takes this tonight, provided there’s no home cooking.

Even
Hatton’s stance looks amateurish.
He’s probably an overachiever, imo but i can’t really say that i care for him much as a fighter or,from what i saw on an interview one time,a person.
JMO.
Very Looking forward to this fight
but I don’t think this is the most evenly-matched fight of the weekend,imo,Lebedev-Alexeev tomorrow is the most evenly-matched fight, with this fight being a close 2nd.
Lebedev-Alexeev is truly pick em in my mind
With impartial judging. But with Universum promoting the fight, I suspect Alexeev just needs to stay on his feet, although I think he’s the superior technical boxer anyway (but with a history of stamina issues).

He’s not that bad though i have to admit.I don’t mind watching him i suppose.
I was referring to the picture above when taking the p**s out of his stance.
Hatton-Nuzhnenko R1

Yuriy moving right at Hatton and not taking any steps back. Hatton chops him with a right but really it just nicks him. First half of the round is plenty busy but with little clean landing. Nuzhnenko is leading the action and the pace for most of this but I think Matthew is probably landing the more clean shots. They’re not the prettiest shots but they’re getting there and Nuzhnenko’s are LEFT HOOK BY NUZHNENKO AND DOWN GOES MATTHEW HATTON!!
Well then! Watt is right — Yuriy’s been throwing that left hook. Referee buys Hatton some time and Hatton is definitely shaken up. 15 seconds left in the round. Hatton trying to hold on and stay away, and he manages to get out of the round as Hatton throws back a bit at the bell.
Nuzhnenko 10-8

Whenever I am watching a broadcast where the team is clearly rooting for one of the fighters I always take great pleasure in their pain when things don’t go well. RTE Bernard Dunne fights were my favorite.
Yeah, if anyone can top the English for desperate delusion in boxing, it’s the Irish.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R2

Nuzhnenko clearly has no fear of Hatton whatsoever and I don’t think the same can be said the other way around. Hatton looks worried in there. Even when he’s throwing back he looks like he’s throwing back because he has to at some point. Hatton is again busy, but Nuzhnenko is just a better fighter so far. Just plain better. But this is a solid round for Hatton, too. It’s winnable with 20 seconds left for both men. Nuzhnenko wings some left hooks again and I think he sneaks this round.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R3

“Victory here would PROPEL Matthew Hatton into the top ten in the WBA rankings!” Well la dee fucking da, fellas. Jesus, they act like it’s a legitimate ranking. It’s about as legitimate as the rankings used to be in Pro Wrestling Illustrated. Actually at least those were based on RESULTS, even fixed results.
Yuriy is banging him up with that left hook. Hatton gets reactions but it’s really weak stuff coming from Magic Matthew. Uppercut smacks Hatton. Hatton can’t do anything with Nuzhnenko. Nothing at all. He’s trying hard, as always, but he looks a bit overwhelmed, while Yuriy is loosey goosey and sticking with the gameplan.
Nuzhnenko 10-9
Nuzhnenko 30-26
The last two rounds were probably both scored for Hatton.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R4

The last half of the last round Hatton did a bit better and … well he keeps getting hit hard to the body and to the head here and there, even when he’s the busier man. Yuriy is constantly on him and there doesn’t seem to be any steam on Matthew’s shots.
They’re calling this as all Hatton now, which I’m not seeing, but I do see Hatton doing better and winning this round with a minute to go. He’s loosened up some. Nuzhnenko might not to adjust a little, because Hatton definitely has, which is a credit to him. He’s finding success with both hands, if nothing spectacular. The right hand is getting in quite well now.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R5

Right hand Hatton. Nuzhnenko is starting to walk right the fuck into that thing, and Hatton is definitely better aware of Yuriy’s left hook, which is being taken out of the fight. Yuriy needs to at least show a right hand sometime. Hatton is starting to take firm control in this fight, I think. Yuriy hasn’t shown any flexibility offensively whatsoever. They just praised Hatton Promotions for getting Matthew a fight with Branco last time out at “the right time,” as if it was hard for them to pick a 40-year-old junior welterweight for a welterweight title fight.
Right hand again for Hatton. Left hook gets in after.

First two minutes are a bit dull — neither man imposing his will effectively, though Nuzhnenko is quite aggressive. Hatton with a big flurry and a couple of nice right hands land. Yuriy is having trouble adjusting at all.

Nuzhnenko needs to hit the body...
That’s why he was getting success early on IMO…
Hatton-Nuzhnenko R7

Yuriy Nuzhnenko is almost steadfastly refusing to throw his right hand. Sky are shameless. They’re rooting for Hatton to complain enough that the referee might take a point.
I don’t think he’s going to need it though. Home field + “being ‘the champion’” + Nuzhnenko not doing a ton since the first round (even though he’s won a couple since) = cruise control win likely for Hatton at this point. Hatton is landing better the last handful of rounds and just taking this fight by the horns.

If Matthew does win, I can't help but hope that they don't put him in with Saul Alvarez.
He’d be absolutely brutalized by Alvarez, whereas by the looks of his performance tonight, he could really test Zaveck or Senchenko.

Isn’t that sad? We’re afraid to put him in with the relatively untested prospect, but we have a couple world champions that we’re comfortable tossing him in with. Only boxing.
Eh, I consider neither of them “world champions,” so that helps me deal with things like that.

Seriously though, he’s clearly a level up from being a clubfighter at this point.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
For sure
But I don’t think he’s a HUGE step back from the top Euro welters at the moment either. Second class of those guys. Aydin, Jackiewicz, Zaveck, etc. are probably all a bit ahead of him. But he’s legitimate enough as a Euro champ in this weak era of European welters.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R8

Left hook by Hatton backs Nuzhnenko’s first charge of the round right down. Right hand by Hatton. That lazy, telegraphed left hook by Nuzhnenko is not doing ANYTHING and it’s ALL HE’S THROWING. Hatton’s punches still have no mustard on them and aren’t quite as impressive as are giving Watt his hard-on, but they’re landing, scoring, and they’re solid.
Hatton is turning it into a full-on brawl, and Nuzhnenko’s glove tape has come loose, so we get a break.
They need to stop calling Nuzhnenko the “former WBA champion” because few titles have been less horseshit than that one, but then that’s just piling on to the Great Big List of Things Sky Sports Need to Stop by S. Christ of the Internet (2010, Dork Press).
Hatton slips and they start counting on the PA but it was clearly no knockdown. Matthew with a flurry. Nuzhnenko is right with him physically, like with his legs, but he’s just not doing ANYTHING anymore.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R9

Hatton’s tape is loose and there’s a quick break but we’re baaaack. Nuzhnenko finally does something useful, let’s see if he can follow up! …nope, not really.
Nuzhnenko DOES land hard later! But Hatton keeps stunting any progress. But Hatton is winging wildly and his right hands still, while effective, aren’t AS good as Sky want you to believe. I think Yuriy imposed his will this round for the first time in what seems like a dog’s age and just won it.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R10

I think we have a fight either guy can win still, which probably means Hatton is a bit up, because the third that I scored for Yuriy definitely could’ve gone to Hatton, and I suppose the ninth could have too, but the sixth (I think it was) that I had for Matthew could’ve gone to Yuriy, so we’ll see.
Shot of Clan Hatton as Yuriy gets his tape fixed again. That’s twice they’ve taken their sweet time doing that.
Nuzhnenko comes back with a good left. When you really break this down, it’s Hatton’s weak but more frequent right hand against Nuzhnenko’s better but less accurate left hook. Nuzhnenko pushing him back agian, but Hatton fights back and lands a right. Close, close round.

jcarr71 said just before the round that Hatton was fading and that appears correct indeed. Nuzhnenko’s fucking glove tape is loose again. For God’s sake.
Nuzhnenko just looks like he has more left in the tank. He’s way more active this round and cruising as Hatton just isn’t throwing much and looks a bit frustrated with Yuriy’s crowding tactics. Yeah, Hatton’s out of gas. He’s getting reckless on offense, and not purposely, but because his energy level has dropped horribly.

Hatton-Nuzhnenko R12

Hatton is coming hard in the first minute of this round. If Yuriy’s smart he’ll stand in there and try to start a war. I think Hatton could go down, if not out, and that could be enormous. And Hatton keeps throwing. There’s a left hook from Nuzhnenko that seemed to affect Matthew, but he fights back!
Boy, Hatton is laying it out there. He’s fighting this round like he needs it, so hats off for that. 30 seconds to go. Hatton throwing that right hand from distance, really winging it out there. I think he takes this round pretty clearly.
