Looking forward to tonight

Have to work all weekend, but can take one set of fights off. This will be the one for me – will catch the others on DVR later I guess, even though I think Bradley-Abregu might be of the entertaining blowout variety.

Glad to see this on ESPN rather than on PPV

Even though I’m from across the pond, a sigh of relief came when Judah finally took some form of a challenge on free TV that people can actually watch him.

He’ll be tentative tonight, call out the big names, tell everyone he’s a light welter for good, and then stay inactive for another eight months…

I'm looking forward to tonight too.

Except for the endless nonsense on ESPN leading up to the actual fight.

Any news on Mayweather-Pac?

The “signing deadline” is almost here isn’t it? I thought they were waiting to break the news of the signing on primetime. This moment shall pass like all the others.

Seriously. 3am EDT. So 2am my time. So I have to stay up, tired as shit, to get the “big news.”

This is a weekly routine for me...

To catch the fights on HBO, I need to stay up until stupid o’clock…

by Dafs on Jul 16, 2010 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Usually I am up really late, but I’m EXTREMELY tired today as I haven’t slept much in the last week (been sick) and was really looking forward to watching the fights, maybe playing a video game for a bit, and hitting the hay at a human time. No dice. God fuck it all. The real problem isn’t staying up until 3:30 or so, it’s that I’ll then stay up until 6.

Judah-Santa Cruz R1

Santa Cruz looks really, really soft up at this weight. And really awkward. Judah is moving very well because he clearly is aware he has no challenge in front of him. I know that sounds like I’m just hating on Zab, but you look at this and tell me differently. Santa Cruz looks awful physically. And I think JASC has a farmer’s tan, which is very rare in boxing.

Judah using his jab, landing to the body, again he’s moving well…I don’t know. There’s not a ton to say. They’re already worried about the heads coming together so if this turns out like the Galvan mess I’m gonna LOSE IT

Judah-Santa Cruz R2

Zab ain’t lost his speed. Not as fast as he used to be, but still extremely fast. JASC is trying and Zab isn’t throwing as much as you might like for the first couple minutes of this round. He then throws two straight four-punch combinations. Not much of it got in but the last left hand definitely poked through. Good right hook to the body by Zab hurts Santa Cruz. He made a face like that gave him gas pains.

I knew what he looked like coming in, but I bet Mike Dallas Jr. doesn’t look much like what your brain initially expects Mike Dallas Jr. to look like for most people. It didn’t when I first heard his name and looked him up. But to be fair I expected him to look like a Von Erich kid so that just makes me weird.

But I hope he doesn’t, because I think Ward is the better fighter all around, and I like him more personally.

But style-wise it’s a tough fight for Ward, imho. In fact, I think Ward has a tougher time with Dirrell than he will with Bute. But I think he wins against both.

Smith 10-9. I think that was a feelout round for Guerrero, but Smith would be happy for that to be the entire night.

by schraubd on Jul 17, 2010 12:48 AM EDT reply actions

Guerrero seems to be trying to draw Smith out of his comfort zone in forcing him to be the aggressor. It won’t work. Smith won’t throw and put himself in danger. I wonder how long Guerrero can keep this up before his need to be aggressive kicks in.

Close round. 10-9 Smith, barely. 20-18 Smith.

Surprise! In a never seen before and totally unexpected twist, Ishe Smith wins rounds in which he punches and loses ones in which he doesn’t.

fernando had a good round 2-1

Ishe Smith thinks this sport has screwed him over. He’s not entirely wrong — he’s been on the wrong end of a bunch of close decisions — but he doesn’t help himself with his workrate. Nonetheless, I bet he thinks he’s about to get hosed.

10-9 Guerrero, 29-28 Smith

I'd say 29-28 Fernando

I feel like most people will score that for Fernando, but I can’t ignore all that body work from Ishe. The ref isn’t calling all of them low.

29-28 Smith

10-9 Guerrero

Pretty clear Guerrero round. But did he exhaust himself throwing so many punches at a low connect rate?

If Guerrero can keep this up, Smith needs to buzz him with some sharp counter. He can’t compete with this high of a punch rate.

2-2

True

But the original two were bogus. The last ones were legit. I think Randy realized he had moved a bit quick to call blows on the beltline, and was compensating.
