With no Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2010, it's time to stop picking sides
Last night's late-night media call with Top Rank wound up like we'd all expected. Manny Pacquiao will not be facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2010, and now the target they're looking at is May 2011. Hey, folks, only about six more months before we enter this exciting cycle again.
Mayweather, Pacquiao, Top Rank, Golden Boy and everyone else involved in this may think they're keeping the fight hot on the back burner, but in reality, they're doing nothing but harming what this fight could have been. When Mayweather returned and dominated Juan Manuel Marquez, and did a shocking one million buys on PPV for it, he was as hot as he's ever been. Pacquiao followed that with a great win over Miguel Cotto, did 1.25 million buys himself, and the public was feeling it. The public demanded this, and not just boxing fans. The once-a-year or three-times-a-decade people were demanding it, too.
This was a fight that went beyond just boxing's sewing circles.
After they failed to come to an agreement, a lot of people walked away. I really believe that. Pacquiao beat Joshua Clottey in a fight at Cowboys Stadium, where the less said about anything but the venue, the better. Mayweather took a big-time fight with Shane Mosley, predictably dominated, and sold a lot of PPVs.
But the "here we go again" aspect of round two in the negotiations to make boxing's only mega fight was like a cloud hanging over a day at Six Flags (or Cedar Point, for those who know Cedar Point). You just knew, because this was the day you picked, that it would f***ing rain. And I think the majority of us knew this fight wasn't going to happen. Just using this site as a barometer, we all but pulled coverage of the negotiations from the front page. I didn't care, didn't believe anything real was going to come out of it, and a lot of our readers seemed to feel the same. Sure we can still get a good discussion going, but a lot of the posts are people saying, "This has become tiresome and boring." I'd rather talk about the guys who are going to fight, even if it's a Zab Judah-Jose Armando Santa Cruz fight, or this week's Sky Friday Fight Night.
Now, Manny Pacquiao will be fighting on November 13. Bob Arum is looking into Abu Dhabi or Mexico, with possible opponents being Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito -- surprise, surprise, surprise. Instead of looking outside for a real challenge, or even just a fresh challenge for someone who's earned it (like Timothy Bradley, perhaps), Arum stays in-house and offers us potential opponents who have either been shredded once by Manny (Cotto) or who have become the most polarizing and temper spike-inducing figure in boxing (Margarito).
Which brings me to my ultimate feeling right now. It's time for boxing fans from all over the world to stop acting like one side is better than the other in this whole saga. It's time for us to unite, forget about why we do or don't like Mayweather, Pacquiao, Arum, Oscar, Schaefer, Ellerbe, and whoever else is involved in this. It's time for us to start blaming everyone involved for the best and biggest fight available in the entire combat sports world not happening. Nobody is pristine here, and for all the loyalty you've shown these people, you're going to be offered a rematch that doesn't need to happen or a fight with a guy who doesn't even have a license to fight in the United States. (And this isn't about Antonio Margarito, either, so I'd rather not have that discussion for the 63rd time where all the gumshoes crack the case, if you'd do me that favor.)
I'm not raging about this. I'm frustrated simply because this is, like it or not, what boxing is more often than what it isn't. For all the strides that have been made in the last four years or so after a really awful period where guys were flat-out avoiding taking hard fights as much as they possibly could, we have these two diva sides bickering and finding it impossible to make the one fight that really matters for either of them.
I'll wind up ordering whatever fight Pacquiao has on November 13. But there are a lot of people who aren't going to put that $54.95 on their cable or satellite bills this time, and that goes for fans all the way from the hardest of hardcore to the people who can name seven boxers and three of them are Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson. And I don't blame them, either.
Maybe we just haven't made it clear enough that Pacquiao-Mayweather is the only fight.
But maybe not. Some men, you just can't reach.

Sad but true
we have these two diva sides bickering and finding it impossible to make the one fight that really matters for either of them.
Pray for Nick Charles
What I'm afraid of is IF these two ever decide that it takes two to make a fight
is that the fight will absolutely suck IF it does happen.

Even as a staunch Pacman fan, I feel myself getting knocked out by the blah-blah-blah from everyone associated. And if Pac has a “fight” like he did against Blockey Clottey, then I may never buy another Top Rank PPV again!

Yep
I’ll be especially pissed when Manny fights Margarito and if Floyd fights someone other than either Berto or Bradley (which he will likely do).

Imo,
Now that we know the Superfight wno’t happen,if all things were fair and just, the best alternatives would be Manny v Tim Bradley at 140 and Floyd v Paul Williams.
Of course we know those fights won’t happen and all things are never fair and just.
Williams is too much of a risk to Floyd and,as SC reminded me the other day,Top Rank are only interested in fighters promoted by Top Rank as Pacquiao opponents.
Riduculous,sad,but true.
Or
if Manny wants to stay at 147,Bradley will show tonight whether he is comfortable at the higher weight.
I think against a guy like Pac,with similar dimensions,he would be.
I know what you mean.
Pac might not be as wholesome as he likes to portray.

Good Article
I agree with the writer … possible fights for manny would be Martinez, Berto, Bradley, Williams or Khan but not Cotto or Margarito please…Cotto and margarito should settle their issues first then maybe but not right now.
Yuk
There are plenty of fights I would heavily consider buying, but Pac-Marg and Pac-Cotto are two fights that I could not be less interested in.
SAD!!
The two biggest, most anticipated fights in boxing today are NOT gonna’ happen, Pac-May and Wlad-Haye, I won’t buy a Pac fight vs Cotto OR Margo…just don’t feel the excitement, feel kinda’ deflated right now. Kinda’ hope this backfires on all parties involved in both these non-events. Arum being Arum, its hard to believe ALL of what he says, but the silence from Team May is baffling. As it is from team Haye. Sad indeed! Peace!!

Great article--
I know you’ll have to buy Manny/whoever and Floyd/whoever. I don’t. And won’t.
P.S.—You stole, with that video, one of only three things I ever have to say in the classroom.
Last January, when the negotiations first broke down – that was a dark day for boxing. This, this just makes no difference to me any more. If they want to waste our time, let them try. As SC said, I’d much rather focus on the hundreds of boxers out there who fight with a ton of heart and desire and give their absolute all. The sport can continue without Mayweather and Pacquiao. Maybe the business can’t, but the sport can.

Pacman and Money May to square off in this NON-Bout!
AND THE WINNAH: MIXED MARTIAL ARTS!
I’m not that big of a UFC fan and just I can’t claim to be a huge boxing fan, but as a Filipino, I am a huge Pacquiao fan.
That being said, I’m disappointed in Pac, PBF, Golden Boy, Top Rank, Arum, De La Hoya, and whomever else has become a laughable roadblock to what would become the highest moneymaking, monumental fight the world has seen since a guy named Ali mixed it up with a guy named Frazier.
I know the UFC monopolizes a lot of the MMA fight world, but at least that has led to some provocative fights on a consistent business.
Boxing the sport is great. Boxing the business is total garbage, and we are reminded by that with a early morning press conference on how something we all want so desperately much will not happen.

Good point, sir. Were MMA like boxing is today, we’d still be waiting for Lesnar-Carwin, Machida-Rua II and a host of other great fights we’ve already seen.

The match-making in MMA is remarkable. I know it’s not as perfect as some would have you believe, but recent activity, or lack thereof, in boxing has made me appreciate it!

At least Arum is doing a great job of doing his damndest not to permanently end any chance of the fight. He’s asking the media not to blame Floyd and saying that he completely understands that Floyd probably doesn’t want the fight now because of the situation with Roger. I didn’t know the Bobfather had a diplomatic bone in his body, but apparently he has several.
What's up with Arum wanting a fight in Abu Dahbi?

I think this illustrates a major dichotomy in sports today.
The major figures have to be spectacular athletes. That’s their primary job, in theory. But then they become celebrities for it and gain all the baggage that comes with it. That’s why you have Manny and Floyd pissing and moaning, that’s why you have Lebron filming hour long specials, that’s why Terrell Owens has a reality show.
The same money and attention that makes professional sports (not just boxing) so lucrative is also a poison that taints them.

Agreed. For the moment, the athletes are calling the shots. For the moment.
In the meantime, One of the many stories yet to unfold is about Roger Mayweather and Floyd’s disposition toward him and his services. If in fact Floyd does not want to fight in November because of the uncertainty, that is totally understandable. And yet, like Lebron’s failure to give Cleveland’s fans a heads-up on his decision to move on, floyd could have made a similar statement regarding his uncle. Had he simply said, “I do not want to make any formal commitments to fight until my trainer’s future is determined”, this whole episode would have been avoided. Not doing so (if that in fact is the reason) is Floyd’s prerogative. It is also ours to be annoyed by the lack thereof. Either way however, if Floyd’s decision is based on his preferring his uncle’s services, it sure doesn’t say much for those of his father. What I always took from boxing back in the day was that the best fight the best.
That no longer is happening. But boxing, IMO, is 95% business so I can understand the ratioanle for the best no longer fighting the best. I can grasp it, but I don’t have to agree with it. The only way I can combat it is to not collude by not paying for PPV, but that is easier said than done. This is a bit of a Catch-22.

You have to strike while the Iron is Hot
Anyone selling anything knows that . There is no where near the interest in this fight as there was the night Pac knocked Hatton out . In one corner we have Pac , for whom Roach has consistently selected boxers with inadequate right hands ( see Oscar, Cotto, Clottey and David Diaz. ) . In the other corner we have the cherry picking , retired- unretired Mayweather . I’ll just keep watching the 168 pound Super Six . Fark these prima donnas . Cheers Blokes.
"I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me. " Hunter S Thompson.
JC40's is a great post.
Though the fight would still make a LOT of money, the optimal moment—
as far the fight’s impact on how these guys will be seen historically is now a thing of the past—
And he is right about the double cherry-picking, and that will hurt each in the long run.
Finally, I’d add that I’ve lost respect for both of these fighters: As the two biggest draws in the sport, they are in some kind of position to call their own shots. That Manny appears to be an Arum puppet doesn’t speak well of him, IMO, and Floyd—
Well, he just doesn’t want to take a chance.

This Has Got To Be
one of the worst (best?) examples of not seizing the moment, missing a massive opportunity and/or missing the boat in the history of boxing.
Not only have they all let the fans down, they have let themselves down by losing career high paydays and, more importantly (to me at least) not fulfilling theirn fighting legacies.
History will not look kindly on them and as JC40 says above, strike while the iron is hot.
Even if they make it next year,a lot of people probably won’t care as much.
I’m Filipino and I have supported Pacquiao’s fight by purchasing the PPVs since his 2nd fight with JM Marquez – they cost about $20 to $40 (peso to dollar equivalent) when purchased via Philippine cable TV for residential viewing. The only PPV I didn’t buy was his last fight with Clottey because the fight I really wanted for him was with Mayweather. Fighting Clottey was supposed to be a consolation prize but I wasn’t convinced. I think that Mayweather fighting Moseley was the better consolation prize and so I watched Manny’s fight on free TV. I was disappointed in his decision not to take the OST that the Mayweather camp asked of him the first time and I’m disappointed again that he has to be stubborn with his decision to stick with the 50-50 split. He failed to realize that this thing wasn’t about blood-testing, it was all about the split in PPV buys. It would still be fair if Manny accedes to a 55-45 or a 53-47 split for the US/UK PPV buys and 50-50 split from the other regions (and he can have all the Philippine PPV buys for himself) as I truly believe that the majority of the US viewers will be watching this because of Mayweather (either they would watch to see him win or to see him lose, but Mayweather would still be selling the fight).
I guess what I’m trying to say is that, I won’t buy Manny’s next PPV fight if he isn’t fighting Mayweather or Bradley (he is the next best fight for him at 140 or 147 lbs). He can fight whomever he wants to fight on Nov. 13 but I’m not gonna waste good money on that. I’ll just watch it in a convention center where they’ll be showing it for free. I just want Manny to realize (if he is indeed humble enough) that accepting a lower split would make this fight with Mayweather materialize and in the end (if he defeats Mayweather) that it would be to his greater benefit and legacy.
Good for you
I too shall abstain from Mayweather and Pacquiao, unless they happen to be fighting each other.

Im sure I have said this before. Reading other articles and, people say this is shit for Boxing and everything. But reading this, Scott doesn’t have to say that, you can grasp the emotion and how much he cares. The same goes for pretty much everyone on here.
If only the fighter’s shared that same emotion and love for what they do!
