Can you think of any CAREER-ENDING LOSSES?

These losses might have occured even though the victim continued on with hsi career, but for all practical purposes, it was over. I can recall when Jimmy Thunder: got brutally waxed by Maurice Harris. He was 32-7 at the time, but then went 3-6 in his last 9 losing4 by stoppage. Mo ended Jimmy's career in New Jersy on May 20, 1997, even though immy retired in 2002.

Can you think of any others?

I would add Micky Wards stoppage over Shea “The Shmarock Express” Neary as another.

Of course, sometimes a defeat ends the craeer right there and then as in Big Daddy’ss KO of Corrie Sanders.

RE: Losses

This isn’t what you had in mind, but I remember Marvin Hagler walking away from the fight game after the controversial loss to SRL.

Dave Tiberi never fought again after his “loss” to James Toney.

by L.L. Cool John on Jul 17, 2010 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

Dave Tiberi is an interseting choice. He really won that fight and could have had afine career, but

he walked away in disgust because by continuing to fight, he would have colluded in something for which he no longer had respect. It was an uncommon act of courage.

Ending of a young mans career

Under completely different cicumstances and yet trying to answer Teds’ question “career ending fights” Billy Collins Jnr.—vs.—Luis Resto. Maybe life ending fights would be more appropriate in this particular case.

I don't know if this is right

But Calzaghe-Lacy ended his career as he knew it. Thing is, he still managed to “win” a bunch of fights and get on TV after that, so I don’t know if it really counts. Another in a similar category was Taylor-Chavez.

Marco Antonio Barrera ended Naseem Hamed’s career, even though Hamed had one more fight after that. Just mentally wasn’t there after the loss though.

Good evening Don

Re: Ali / Liston …true . Same with Tyson and Douglas . Douglas no way “ended” Tyson’s career ( everyone knows he did that all by himself) but the invincible beast image died that night in the land of the rising sun . …never quite the same “aura” ever again

by Sir Jack Daniels on Jul 17, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Hi Sir Jack--

Yes that night was the end of Tyson as T-Rex.

Not on point, but just watched a young Lennox Lewis decision Ray Mercer on Classic ESPN. Even with a lot of clinching, that fight made me nostalgic. Lennox put together some vicious right hand to the body/uppercut to the head combinations and stood his ground when he had to.Some beautiful jabbing by both men, especially Mercer. Definitely not a Wlad-type fight.

Even though I was very impressed by young Lennox, I think Mercer would have beaten him if he could’ve sustained his attack. What do you think was the story on Mr. Mercer? Age, lack of dedication to training, or just a stamina deficit? I know lack of dedication was a large part.

But do you think the late start and a natural stamina deficit played a role?

by Don From Prov on Jul 17, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Don

Mercer’s one tough s.o.b and to say he has a good dig would not do him justice . The problem is that it takes more than that doesn’t it ?
There are lots of guys out there that are tough bangers but who lack the mental discipline to keep in shape between fights , take an easy training camps , drink , eat shit etc . Selodm are those guys ever mentioned as stand out .
I suppose losses to ( very stand outs) Lewis and Holy are nothing to be ashamed of and then there were some medical issues I believe.
However , Ray’s end of school report card will always read " could of done better" imo .
I’ll always remember Ray’s battering of Morrison and his Tim(berrrrr) Sylvia mma moment though – great stuff .

Pavlik-Miranda – Miranda, while never special, was certainly never the same fighter.

Pavlik-Taylor – Kelly set Taylor on the road towards the end, although Froch might have just finished off the job.

Hopkins-Pavlik – this remains to be seen, and I personally think Kelly has more to give, but there’s certainly an argument that Hopkins has initiated a downward spiral for Pavlik.

Marciano ended the long careers of Joe Louis, Jersey Joe Walcott and Lee Savold. Roland La Starza was never the same after fighting Marciano. Rocky punched so hard he took almost every thing out of his opponents. went straight to hell after getting KO’d and losing his WBA title to Gene Hatcher in 1984. He hung on for a few years, but his career went nowhere.. Last I saw Bumphus he was being smoked by Lloyd Honeyghan in 1987…. Christ Almighty, that was ugly…….. Bumphus was shot……..

Note:

Honeyghan also waxed Hatcher in about 30 seconds, as well………

Still, Johnny Bumphus was one guy who lost it over night…. No real gradual decline….. Just gone……..

I also recall a hot 80s and early 90s ESPN dude named John Meekins at 140 pounds…. I thought Meekins had “champ” written all over him. But, he got his azz kicked and went to hell….. All gone…….

I’ll think of some more…….

I can read BLH on my phone, but can't respond.

And by the time I got on a computer, almost all the ones I thought of had been named.

Hamed/Barrera
Barrera/Pacquaio
Morales/Pacquiao
Oscar/Pacquaio
Hatton/Pacquiao (though some would say Floyd took away the ‘real’ Hatton….)
Tyson/Douglas
Taylor/Pavlik
Miranda/Pavlik
Pavlik/Hopkins
Jones/Tarver
Taylor/Chavez (possibly the one that exemplifies this topic more than any other)
McClellan/Benn
Watson/Eubank
Maccarinelli/Haye

There are others that I can mention:
Cotto/Margarito (although the temptation is to include Cotto as another Pacquaio-induced end-of-career)
Margarito/Richardson and the CSAC…. sorry I mean Shane Mosley….
Cooney/Holmes
Spinks/Tyson
Holyfield/Lewis (both fights, since Lennox clearly won both)
Bowe/Holyfield II (even though Bowe won the third, he wasn’t the same animal after that second fight)
Argullo/Pryor (the first fight- despite the black bottle incident. Arguello was never the same again.)
Eastman/Hopkins (Howard had the beating of Bernard, in my eyes, and I was shocked when I saw Hoawrd come out and effectively refuse to throw a punch. Hopkins was beginning to show the effects of age, and Eastman could and should have beaten him, but while Hop was fighting at 40%, Eastman was fighting at 20….. I think that was the point at which Eastman just looked in the mirror and said to himself, ’y’know what, you gave it a good go, but now’s the time…..’)
Mundine/Kessler

Also, there are others that we can speculate about, even though it’s still too early to know for sure; a prominent example of this would be Mitchell/Katsidis, or maybe even Kessler/Ward.

I might post more if I can think of any, which I inevitably will as soon as I hit ‘POST’…..

Is this a reply to me?

If so, please press ‘reply’. Thanks. ;) ;)

I do seperate the fighter from the person. It makes no odds.

Look, I hate Sugar Ray Leonard. He, and the bent or incompetent judges that didn’t appreciate that a round is more than than the last 20/30 seconds, cost us more of Marvin Hagler. Hagler walked away from the sport in disgust. In DISGUST, Ted. That decision was a joke. Leonard wasn’t there to fight, he was there to grandstand, and the fact that 2 judges fell for it means that Hagler, probably my favourite fighter of all time, retired earlier than he would have done.

I feel like something was taken from me, as insane as that probably sounds. Leonard tried to trivialize Hagler for years, tried to make him look stupid, went to crazy lengths to score points on him in the arena of public opinion. Getting Hagler to ringside so he could pretend he was going to fight Hagler, instead announcing his retirement; stuff like that. Leonard was a fucking prick. And then to get a decision he didn’t deserve, and refuse Hagler a rematch?

Hagler had another 5 or 6 fights in him, easy. What Leonard did cost us, you and me, and all other fight fans, the chance to see those fights. Had he not gone out of his way to humiliate Hagler then the judges being fucking dense might not have culminated in Hagler’s retirement. Losing a bad decision to a guy that had treated him that way publicly? That was never going to sit well with Hagler, who was one of the proudest guys ever to step through the ropes.

Does that answer your question?

So, to summarize:

I tend to just refuse to comment on Leonard. I just try to ignore him, since the site does not need my ire to be aired on a frequent basis. I dislike Joe Calzaghe, I dislike other fighters, past and present. I’ll discuss those guys, and my reasons, but I abhor Sugar Ray Leonard. And as such, I just don’t get involved in stuff about him.

you obviously have strong views mate

I think that is the first time I have seen you speak your mind about SRL. It’s easy to hate, good to see you havn’t taken the easy option and just hate on him everychance you get :)

by Sweet science on Jul 22, 2010 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

He's the only one.

I blast Calzaghe, I hammer guys who don’t pull their weight in my eyes (Haye, Khan, Floyd) or who get decisions they simply don’t deserve before taking more easy options (Dawson, Haye) or guys who are all mouth with no substance or who have done nothing to justify their bullshit (Fury, Khan, Small, Cameron), and otherwise will vent fury on other fighters who don’t follow the golden rules, but what Leonard did actually felt/feels personal to me. Don’t know why.

Anyone who hasn’t seen it should have a quick look at the “Hagler/Leonard” installment of “HBO’s Legendary Nights”. It’s on youtube, in three parts. Leonard treated Hagler like he was some cheap whore, who could be taken or left on a whim.

Anyhow, I can’t forgive. And I steer clear of venting views on Leonard, as I stayed clear of doing the Hagler/Leonard Classic Round by Round. (120-108, anyone?)

.

All that said, I give massive credit to guys who do what most of us want them to do, which is get in there and fight. Tua, Katsidis, Andrade, Kessler, Bute, Martinez, Bradley, Alexander, Maidana… I could go on for days.

Piss off Chaos ;-)

120 – 108? Ray won the first five rounds in a canter . Leonard hadnt fought in three years , he was more past his best than Marvin was mate . WTF was Hagler doing fighting orthodox? He had a brain explosion, Leonard got into his mind ala Ali. Every time I watch that fight I score it 7- 5 Leonard . Cheers Mate

I was full on supporting Marv in that fight

I hated Leonard as a young bloke , I wanted Duran to beat him , Hearns to beat him and Hagler to beat him . Age and hindsight have given me more appreciation of Rays abilities. I was shattered when he beat Marvin . I used to parrot the line Marv was robbed until I actually watched a replay of the fight years later . Good onya Mate.

Leonard’s last 30 round stealing sucked but Hagler punched in slo-mo.

Hagler's shots carried more weight.

Had it been an amateur fight, with amateur scoring, then Leonard won the fight.

“Clean, hard punching”- Hagler for me all day.

Leonard is the one fighter I try to stay clear of.

He was obviously great, and obviously a fantastic fighter, but I don’t like image being the deciding factor in fights, especially when my favourite fighter ever was on the receiving end of it and subsequently retired.

And there ends my tale of woe. :)

I think it was more, or as much, that Marvin was about finished.

Ray liked what he saw in the Mugabi fight: A Hagler who did not put punches together as well.

Matthew Hilton vs Robert Hines

Hilton hammered Hines early, dropped him hard, gassed around the 4th and got beat up for the remaining eight rounds. Absorbed career ending punishment and lost his belt – ruined in his early 20’s. Doug DeWitt then beat him up for the WBO MW belt.

DeWitt then faced Benn – great fight, both down but Nige took it out of him.

I did—half dead— point to the photo of Mike in with Duran at the end of the workout today and tell him not to take it wrong but I was glad that Duran got him. It took him a beat to decide whether to laugh or to pop me. Finally, he smiled and said, “Good one.” Whew!!

This is like a guessing game of some sort.

The first post that I see refers to me as Mr. Perv,

which I take as a play on Prov

and a reference back to the joking with JC40 about the bikini post, but if you really think that I have even the beginning of a clue or, you are wrong. No idea whatsoever. If anyone seems to be trying to bust balls, it would be related to “Perv” and Laurel and Hardy. If that’s playing around, great. If not, I missed something but I’m not going to spend anytime guessing about it.

Kid Blast 7/4

Kid Blast is the underdog, having stepped in late as a replacement for Don From Prov, who had to pull out of this contest, but he is a very live dog in this fight. Goatsnake goes in as a justifiable favourite, but with experience on his side, can Kid Blast pull off the upset?
