Video of Briggs taking dive

Star-divide

no effort on the part of briggs. i hate to use the word dive because you never know why a fighter goes down and stays down but this is a dive. no if, ands, or buts about it. it was clear that briggs was there to get a check, fall down, look hurt and go home. maybe this will wake green up and he will start taking better fights

This is looking bad

http://www.watoday.com.au/sport/boxing/hes-a-dog-and-hes-not-getting-paid-20100722-10li4.html

Centrebet spokesman Neil Evans this morning said hundreds of bets began pouring in from yesterday morning, shortening the odds for a first-round knockout from $5 to odds-on by the time the fight got under way.

“The outcome of the fight was highly, highly dubious,” he said.

“We’ve never ever in the history of boxing seen so much money go on a specific decision outcome, as in a first- or second-round knockout.

“There was a massive go on first or second-round knockout starting from very early yesterday morning, right through the day, certainly up until early afternoon,” he said.

“There were hundreds and hundreds of bets of all different shapes and sizes, and a lot of them from Western Australia. There was one bet of $50,000, which is extraordinary on an option of a first-round knock-out, even on a hot favourite.

“They were both into even money, paying $2 each at around lunch-time almost, such was the amount of money just poured in the gate.”

Probably worth reading the full article, but it almost certainly looks like the fix was in. This type of betting pattern though makes me think that Green didn’t necessarily know about it, that it came from outside.

Green looked seroously unhappy

After that fight, I doubt he was in on anything.

I agree.... but:

What the hell was up with his wraps after the fight?

Is it just me, or do they look fucking HUGE??!!

re wraps

Look weird to me too. Didn’t RJJr question the wraps? Everyone figured he was looking for excuses, me too; I don’t think he would have won a fair fight, but that doesn’t make him wrong about the wraps. Looks way plausible now. I believe Green remarked in an interview somewhere words to the effect that people who have been hit by his punches felt they’d been hit by a brick. huh. Don’t like to be overtrashing someone, innocent till proven guilty, etc., but the whole thing looks so dirty—and they do look huge.

by BoxAnne on Jul 29, 2010 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Wraps

They look huge partly because of the wide angle lens when he’s pointing his fist right into the camera—that part of it is just wide-angle distortion, but they also look huge hanging at his side, and even pointing away from the camera, and do so in footage of a previous fight in Brickhaus’s link above. Green may simply have abnormally huge knuckles, but I’d like to see JUST HIS HANDS naked, next to, say, the hands of a few equal-sized landscapers or auto body guys.

by BoxAnne on Jul 29, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed on pretty much all counts.

It looks like he has a bloody great sweat band around the front of his knuckles or something.

Funny shaped wraps, at best, definitely.

ROFLOL

Never seen someone get “KO’d” from a punch they slipped. What a joke.

left to the body

It looked like he wanted to go down after the left to the body, and started to then thought better of it. Wow that is tough to watch as a boxing fan.

OliGold did a fanpost asking why we love boxing..

This fight has to be the complete opposite end of that discussion.

It’s amazing, I put that post up the day before this to cheer myself up after the Mayweather-Pacquaio fiasco, and then this shit happens!

At least this fight isn't relevant

Yeah, absolutely. To be honest, I’m coming out of it looking at Danny Green as just an egotistical knob, and I firmly believe he – rather than Paul Briggs – is the person to be attacked. Whether Paul Briggs took a dive or not, the fact persists that he should never have been in the ring with anyone, and Danny Green – as a person, let alone a promoter – should never have let the fight go ahead. I’ve spent quite a lot of time thinking about this, and at the end of the day, if Briggs’ mental and physical condition is really as serious as certain figures have made it sound, I’d rather the guy took a dive and saved himself than stayed on his feet and took a pummelling. Danny Green’s the guy to be looked at here, not Paul Briggs. (Sorry for the rant, this has – in the words of Green – really got me ‘jacked’)

That seems to be the view here in Oz Oli

Green has been copping a savaging in the press here . Even in his home state of Western Australia.

Good.

I was completely appalled at first by Paul Briggs’ actions, and I didn’t mince my words or anything, but then I remembered his fights against Adamek, read up on his medical condition since then and heard about his financial situation, and just thought JESUS CHRIST Danny Green is a knob. I’m glad he’s taking the flak, I guess he’s not a ‘legend’ any more (man that remains the funniest thing I’ve ever heard an announcer say!)

@Oligold re Green

Yes. Moreover, his post-fight rant looked very WWE to me, very—performed. I completely distrust everything about Green now, including the wraps.

This is a different take on what happened in todays Sydney Morning Herald . Its like everyone that had anything to do with the fight knew Briggs was damaged and that they all put money on him to go down in one or two because of the wretched condition , both mentally and physically he was in . The word is that his sparring partners werent allowed to hit Paul in the head . http://www.smh.com.au/sport/boxing/staggering-truth-cashstrapped-briggs-was-not-fit-to-fight-20100722-10n2e.html?autostart=1 A Green KO in the first round was backed in from 7 to one to even money .

Wow.. JC, that's BAD..

Sounds to me like someone wants fuckin’ for allowing that fight to go ahead…

by Phill on Jul 23, 2010 1:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Exactly Phil

The WA authorities , Briggs corner ( Billy Hussein) , Green himself as promoter , all need to have a good look at themselves mate . Johnny Lewis put it well, he basically said that fighters shouldnt be allowed to promote their own fights due to the fact that they will invariably ring the undertakers and or the old folks home to find opponents . Looking at Green and Mundine hes pretty spot on .

Conflict of interest I agree mate

Briggs looked like he was coming down from a three day rave during pre-fight interviews. Vacant dilated pupils – looked medicated. A nothing shot but Briggs looked hurt to me. His hands were still up when he walked into the canvas like knockout victims can do from a high head shot. Sad, sad ending for a fighter of Paul’s calibre – probably cost him his commentary gig.

Green’s a wanker. Sets him up then calls him a dog in front of his Perth fans. Cameron called him out and he didn’t say shit – Lesnar would squash him like a bug wtf’s he on about? If ego boy wants to be taken seriously then call out Cunningham or Huck, defend against Flores, Lebedev or Wlodarcyzk and cut the weight limit crap. And if he wants to race that ugly Falcon of his I’ll take his money any day.

Trying to make a big money fight

One of these days, maybe he’ll get more realistic about his financial demands and actually be able to land the fight with Tarver or Hopkins or Holyfield that he’s been angling for (not that they’re not all old and shot as well).

Hey, got to give Briggs some props here….the acting was great. The way he tried to get up, but was wobbley, then went down again. I’ve seen worse in movies.

That's true, Frank.
