Povetkin out, Peter in
On September 11, Wladimir Klitschko will be rematching Samuel Peter, likely to be aired on ESPN. Klitschko was slated to fight mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin, but after failing to show up at their press conference and concerned that Povetkin would pull out of the fight (and there are also rumors that Povetkin never actually signed the contract), the IBF stripped Povetkin of his mandatory status and has installed Samuel Peter. This came after Povetkin had delayed taking the fight for the two years since being made mandatory. Reportedly, Povetkin's promoter wanted the fight, but trainer Teddy Atlas wanted to hold off because he thought Povetkin still wasn't ready. The first time Peter and Klitschko fought, Peter knocked Klitschko down three times but lost a decision.

Teddy Atlas better not be a commentator for this.
Lame, but not an awful match if Povetkin really wasn’t coming. But anyone who expects anything like a replay of the first fight is playing themselves…the first Peter fight might have been the last fight before Wlad fully embraced the safety first strategy and encased himself in a candy coating shell.
Agreed
I think it was his first or second fight with Steward, and he still hadn’t really changed to a safety-first style yet. I’d be surprised if Peter lands a clean punch all fight.

.
You beat me too it. Put it this way, Vitali smashed Peter after not boxing for 3-4 years. He beat the fight out of him. Wlad will, and let me quote Floyd Sr, “Beat the Shit out of him”

I dunno about that
He’ll probably paw at him in a controlled manner for 12 rounds, and maybe go for a KO after Peter is exhausted and bewildered.

Maybe it was a little strong
But lets face it. Peter will not win this fight. Yes he’s got power, but he has no way of getting to him. No way. And sooner or later, after beating him down with the jab, Peter WILL get bewildered, and exhausted. Then the straight right will smash him. And the occasianal left hook.
Bottom line, Peter has no chance!
It will be a late stoppage or a shutout descision. How often have you said that about a Wlad fight? Too often. No wonder HBO has pulled the plug

I like Teddy Atlas....
….but with the fight being on ESPN…at least you won’t have to pay for it.

Povetkin's a joke.
He tried to use WADA as a means of ducking the fight, and then when that didn’t work, he chose to give up on subtlety and just actively duck Wlad. At this rate, with Haye, Povetkin and Valuev all refusing to fight, the Klitschkos are going to have no options other than each other! Dear God, please make it happen!

Actually, I’d be quite happy seeing Derek Chisora and/or Tyson Fury getting beaten up by a Klit. I’m generally very supportive of British boxers, but those two – particularly Chisora – really rub me up the wrong way.

I can see where you're coming from with Fury
But why Chisora?

His general demeanour towards other fighters at press conferences pisses me off, and his antics in the ring – biting Paul Butlin, for example, as if he thinks he’s Tyson – infuriate me. I really can’t think of a fighter I disdain more, to be honest. It’s largely irrational, but I just can’t stand the guy. Decent boxer though.

Im with you on that
I thought the kiss at the press conference was pretty funny to be fair, but Biting is bang out of order. And yes he is a decent boxer, good speed and decent power
by Sweet science on Jul 23, 2010 6:48 AM EDT up reply actions
The bite was just an embarrassment.
It was so foolish and stupid, because he was comfortably winning what was an uneventful fight. He just drew attention to himself in a negative manner for absolutely no reason whatsoever. And I’m not so bothered about the kiss, it’s more the arrogance of the man and the way he dismisses other fighters.
Funnily enough, I don’t actually mind Tyson Fury that much, because I think he’s shown great heart in his last couple of fights and – barring for the Dirrell abuse on Twitter, which was bang out of order – he’s generally quite good fun.

What was the Dirrel abuse??
And Fury, I don’t like him at the moment because he thinks he is god’s gift to the boxing world. Yes he has the talent to go a long long way. But if he is as good as he says he is he would have fucked John Mcdermott up in a big way. And while he showed great heart in his last two fights, he was shattered after 5 rounds!? He’s a professional FFS. In a way im kind of hoping he loses. Then we shall see if he has the heart for boxing and stops moaning. Will he keep on doing what he is doing or will he go the Khan route?
by Sweet science on Jul 23, 2010 7:11 AM EDT up reply actions
On Twitter, for no reason whatsoever, he attacked Dirrell for faking injury against Abraham. It wasn't cool at all.
I do agree with you on Fury’s cardio – it’s pathetic. However, he did have a heck of a lot of behind-the-scenes problems for the second McDermott fight, and lesser guys would have given up when the going got tougher. He stepped into a hostile atmosphere twice, refused to give in, and eventually delivered the goods. I do think he’d be eaten alive by anyone a level above Big Bad John, but if he can improve his cardio to match his obvious talents, the guy could really go somewhere.

It isn't just his cardio
It’s more his IQ. Really getting to know the game, tightening himself up and become a solid 12 round fighter. But like we both agree he does have the tools. He just needs to learn how to apply them.
by Sweet science on Jul 23, 2010 7:22 AM EDT up reply actions
To be fair
he’s had 11 fights. And he has fought some pretty good opposition in those 11 fights. I don’t recall other British heavies fighting such tough opponents in the infancy of their careers.

yeah I accept that
Its hard to explain. Every boxer builds himself up, but he’s gone a bit further than that. Maybe I have just brought into the hype a bit too much. He say’s he gunna do this and that, well go on then?? Angdgoing back to what I said above, his cardio is a joke. If your going into a 10/ 12 round fight. Train for a twelve round fight. Don’t expect to knock the “other” guy out in the 1st round while shagging a ring card girl and smoking a joint!

That's the way I'd like to do it.... ;)

and yeah I think I recall the twitter incident
Why?? again, like Chisora, is there any need for it? He aint even gunna be fighting you EVER. Let your own work do the talking!

Bazzlad feels the same way.
I’ve all but forgotton the biting incident, to be honest, not because I’m trying to whitewash it but because it just doesn’t seem relevant to where he is now.
Yeah, Chisora comes across as a bit of a heel, but I like the fact he wants to be active, and genuinely wants to scrap when he gets in there. He’s not the prettiest to watch, but I’ll watch him just the same.

very much agree with OliGold on Chisora
I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘’Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'’ (Bernard Hopkins)
A lot of people do feel that way on him.
I used to, but now I just kind of ignore the bullshit and watch him fight. And I quite like the way he fights. :)

I was at Mitchell-Katsidis, so I saw him fight Danny, and it sort of made me hate him a bit more! It was like picking on an old man who was scared of being in there. Although that’s obviously not Chisora’s fault, it just fueled my fire haha

I chucked a few quid the way of a Chisora stoppage within 6 rounds.
The price?
12/5.
Massive. So I was quite glad to see Chisora go out there looking like he meant business…. :)

I used to be like that with Chisora, but I've come around on him now.
I like guys who go in there to fight, and the demolition jobs he did on Baker and Williams were fun to watch.
I’d give him a chance against anyone in the division with th exception of the Klits right now, simply because he is willing and able to fight.

Im probably with you on that as well. The Klit’s are a cut above, he could take out Haye with his power, and that could be a real entertaining fight. I think someone with solid boxing ability and good speed could just out jab him and out fox him. His height and reach sucks. Maybe Chambers, but he isn’t big by all means is he, and I havn’t really seen much of him?

Chambers probably decisons Chisora, but he'd know he'd been in a fight, that's for sure.

I have to give it to Sam Peter— the guy is a sucker for punishment. You have to kind of admire a guy who signs up for what is certain to be merciless punishment. I hope he lands a miracle haymaker.

I hope he lands a miracle haymaker.
In a way I do and I don’t. It would be the biggest thing to happen in the Heavyweight division since Lennox Vitali. But me being a Haye fan, I want him to stop Wlad. Il admit to not being too happy with Haye since at least the Ruiz fight, I think his fans deserve more.
If Wlad loses to Peter, there is bound to be a rematch clause, Wlad will win back his title. Then Haye will come knocking. Everybody will say "He was scared of Wlad, until the Peter fight. And if Peter KO’d him Haye will know he has a legitimate shot) If he does win, he wouldn’t have fought Wlad until he was on the slide.
Or even worse, Haye just fights Peter for the unified Heavyweight titles etc. Haye wins, and then ducks Klitschko. Obviously the hardcore fans will realise that he isn’t one of the best of all time, but you don’t need me to tell you how the British press will portray him do you?
I want Haye to fight Klitschko soon, because I know he has the talent to beat him, a very real chance, but also not a forgone conclusion. C’mon Haye, don’t try and take the easy route, show some fucking BALLS!!

I'd rather they dig up Sonny Liston.
The corpse would have a shot.
