If you could ask one question about boxing for which you don't have an answer, what would it be?

Mine would be why did Teddy Atlas go into the crowd in Las Vegas many years ago and start a ruckus with some guy (I think it might have been a writer or reporter)? I believe Teddy may have been addressing the crowd at the time. What triggered this explosion? I know he got into a number of other potential fights, but this one involved him doing a bit of beat down on the victim--or at least I believe it did. Anyone know the facts.?

Tunney

He was my Dad’s favorite fighter. Because of the way he moved in the ring. I’ve never seen him fight.

Why did Rocky Marciano fight so often in Providence and not Boson?

by pugknows on Jul 30, 2010 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting question

I looked him up on boxrec and noticed that he did fight many fights in Providence.

I’m guessing it may be a promotional deal that tied him to RI. Maybe there was more money or a better deal that made fighting there better as opposed to Boston. Providence also has a large italian population, which may have also played some role.

Nice bit of trivia.

Yes! to sonof's

post, and pugknow’s question is an easy one: Prov is the far superior city (not really).

Brockton is not too far away from Prov and it was once a good fight city. Plus, there seems to have been some Marciano tie to Prov: I’ve heard that Marciano would walk all the way into Prov and go to a bar that was run by a Providence ex-fighter (can’t recall his name), have a Coke or something and then walk back to Brockton. I believe Marciano’s brother opened a bar in Providence at one time as well.

Here is a question, one that bugged me for a long time: HBO used to have a series called Oz, but it was not about Goatsnake and JC40, it was a prison show. An actor who played of the “Mafia” guys on the cellblock suddenly started appearing in Aurturo Gatti’s entourage when he made his ring walk. I still see him at ringside seats in some fight broadcasts. Supposedly he was one of the “actors” from the series who was—or had been a connected guy. He is a very pumped up, very Italian looking guy—

Anyone know his story?

the italians and irish didn’t get along too well back then is part of the reason rocky didn’t fight often in the boston area.

He was the president of the Hell's Angels NY chapter.

Current club members might consider him a sell-out Don but a fake tough guy? He’s always at the big UFC shows , sitting where the fighters meet the officials before they enter the cage – know’s where the camera is.

He was in the movie Black and White – where Tyson slaps Robert Downey Jr.

I’ve been to every side of Chicago, and recently at that. It’s really not that bad. Detroit is far worse. It’s poorer and the police are understaffed badly. You can stay out of trouble almost anywhere if you don’t go where you shouldn’t, but in Detroit trouble is far more likely to find you than it is in Chicago these days. I’m certainly not saying there aren’t rough areas of Chicago, though. Of course there are. Detroit is just worse. Indianapolis is no peach either for midwest cities, but it doesn’t get the pub because…well, because it’s Indianapolis.

Actually, for American cities, you also have Baltimore, New Orleans, St. Louis, Oakland, etc.

Cape Town has one of the world’s highest murder rates. Foreign Policy ranked Caracas up there as well, pretty women or not.

No!!!!!!!! Chicago is far bigger than those other places. Oakland is not all that bad. It was in the 70's but not now. You could fit N.O. or St. Louis into one of the big , bad neighborhoods in Chicago. Chrsit, I grew up in Logan Square.

There is a state of mined in Chicago that is far, far worse than the places you mentioned and it includes a social stratification that is so finite that it creates issues betweem Cro’s aand Serbs. I repeat, Chicago is not only the most dangerous place I have ever seen, but it also is by far was the most rascist.. I don’t know if it still is, but it was. And while you may have visited Chicago, I lived there and grew up there. I also lived in St. Louis and its bad areas are VERY bad—but they are small when compared to the monster south side and west side and uptown and buck town areas of Chicago. Never been to Capetown, but dated a South African chicj=k in the early 90’s and she was VERY dangerous. Detroit is more like a bombed out Beirut. Not too much left there to worry about. Dreadful place.

No, IMO, Chicag is a very scary place that is running up a terrible toll every weekend with shootings and killings.

As for Indianapolis, yeah, the have bad tornados there..period kerplunk! Good God man, they are Hoosiers!

And this as well:

“I spent three months working – and living – at a homeless shelter on the Near West Side of Chicago, a neighborhood that had burned in 1968 and never been rebuilt. We were on the edge of a gang boundary, and one homeless man died outside one night after he got punched and his head hit a brick wall.

“I went from there to war-torn Croatia, to a little town that had seen two rounds of battle, plus three years of tense violent standoff between Croat and Serb.

“Chicago was worse.

“More violent with more traumatized people.

“Now, this was 15 years ago, and I thought things had gotten better.

“But the lesson remains the same. Our national priorities are all screwed up.

Actually, I do agree with what you’re saying really. I was phrasing what I wanted to say the wrong way. Chicago IS a violent city, and fairly dangerous, but by crime rate data (I’m focusing in violent crimes here) there are many other that, per capita, are more violent and more dangerous in the United States alone, let alone around the world. I know Chicago’s bigger, but its size doesn’t particularly make it more dangerous, because there are many parts of Chicago that are not very dangerous at all. Look at the 2008 data, the top four (by far) are St. Louis, Oakland, Memphis and Detroit. Chicago is high up the list indeed, but came in at 19th overall, though they’re probably a bit higher really, since they didn’t have data for forcible rape submitted to the FBI.

I certainly wasn’t meaning to say that Chicago doesn’t need improving or that there aren’t major problems there.

Downtown Jersey City and Newark were pretty sketchy. Only had a brief stop in Detroit – crossed the bridge into Windsor – but I felt it. Passed through Gary, Indiana (respect to Mr Zale) and loved Chi-town but didn’t wander into any bad neighbourhoods.

Not that it matters much

But the cities where I’ve FELT the least safe (excluding actual war zones) are the Little Haiti neighborhood of Miami and certain parts of Naples (where my life never felt threatened, but I was robbed twice within a matter of hours, including once by my cab driver, and was nearly run over by motorcycles in alleyways several times).

As for world’s most dangerous cities, I’d guess that Fortaleza, Brazil is up there. I’ve seen some docus about that place, and everything makes it look like a small strip of really rich people and one gigantic favela outside of that.

Would

Jack Dempsey still be remembered as an ATG (or at least as highly regarded as he is) if he had fought the top black fighters in his era (Sam Langford,Harry Wills, etc)???
I read an excellent piece on Dempsey in Boxing News last week by Gavin Evans and he (Dempsey) was quoted as admitting that he avoided Langford as he knew he would have took a beating (that’s more or less what he said).
I was suprised how horrible a guy Dempsey was, even accouting for how times were different back then.A known racist and a guy who pimped his own wife out apparently.
Also an overrated fighter according to some who never fought the best men from his generation and spent a large part of his peak years fighting exhibitions.

Yeah, Dempsey wanted nothing to do with Langford by all accounts. Then again not many people really did. Langford took a lot of fights where he had to agree to “take it easy” just so he could get some money.

Dempsey, race, viciousness

My Dad (1919-1992) was a Marciano fan. Gramp (1890-1973), was a yr. or so older than Dempsey, so for him Dempsey was more relevant; they would sometimes argue who was the better fighter. Gramp had seen Dempsey fight at least once, and was pretty sure he was the better fighter (Daddy disagreed on that), but there was no doubt in either of their minds that Marciano was the better man. Both of them agreed on that, and went out of their way to teach us kids to that effect, and exactly why they thought so—race, especially, and general attitude. Dempsey’s out-of-ring nastiness was well rumored, even in his own time. For what it’s worth, & I have no idea what he based this on but I believe Gramp did see Langford fight, maybe just at the movies—and his opinion was that Langford would have beaten Dempsey, because Gramp thought SL was a better boxer than JD and just as fierce.

MATT I always thought Dempsey’s life story was incredible however as a fighter his reign as world champ was nothing special without refering to my boxing records i believe in seven years as heavyweight champ Dempsey defended his title just six times and really the only quality boxer he faced was Gene Tunney and we all know what happened there, i hope i’m not giving the impression of discrediting the man that is not my intention but as the saying goes " facts are facts" but he sure was “one hell of a man”, a great character. good luck.

Maybe Not

The death rate is lower in football, but the long-term head injury thing is slowly being exposed as far, far worse in pro football than in boxing, where estimates have usually hovered around the 20% mark —1out of 5. That 20% includes all data available, namely includes guys from when refs stopped the fights much later than now, and bouts lasted much longer than now. Recent research using new research capabilites is revealing evidence of near-100% long-term brain damage in pro football, & even short stints on high-school teams are startling. If you’re interested, you might with to see the article “Offensive Play” in The New Yorker, October 19, 2009. I had issues with some of his attitudes, but it’s a very interesting piece.

Childless Too

So what do I know? But, hypothetically, I’d let the kid fight—there’s very little danger at the amatuer level, and if he/she were really gifted (unlikely, given my spazzola genes), I’d keep a damn careful eye on things, but I’d let the kid be his/herself. I couldn’t be pro-boxing if I wouldn’t do that. Life is dangerous, death is a certainty, live till you die. But I would keep an eagle eye on things.

Good point. I think I’m a little hypocritical there as I liked amateur boxing, and always think it would be great discipline for any young man or woman—

Teo was a better fighter than Savon but would have fought much much better competition if he would have defected. i think he was good enough to become heavyweight champion.

No doubt in my mind Savon would have become an alphabet champion.

I’m not sure who would have had the tougher road though.
Teo’s first Gold was at the 1972 Olympics so Ali,Foreman and Frazier would have been pretty much done by the time he came through. There would have been Larry Holmes and Ken Norton, among others to go up against though.
Stevenson v a peak Ali would have been great to see.
Savon won his first Gold in 1992 so if he turns over straight away,he’s likely ready for a title shot by ‘96-97.
It would have been great to see him against Holyfield,Lennox,Bowe and even an old Tyson.
I reckon they would both had very tough opposition in two of the best era’s but i agree that Stevenson was the better of the two, from what i saw and have read.

by Matt Mosley on Jul 31, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Savon did win more major amateur titles though.
Unbelievably (according to wikipedia)
Savon – 3 Olympic golds,6 World Championship gold’s,1 silver,3 Pan Am Games gold’s.

Stevenson – 3 Olympic gold’s,3 World Championship gold’s,2 Pan Am gold’s,1 bronze.

But their is a dress code, enterance fee, two drink minimum purchase and parking valet, etc…. By the time they get through with you, you could’ve gotten a ringside seat at the arena…..

I saw it for $15.00—brought my own chips and iced tea. Go to fathomevents.com, enter the name of the fight—that is, if it’s being released in theaters—enter zip code, see if it’s showing in your area. You might have to drive a little ways, but it’s a great way to see a fight.

I actually don't agree with you on this.

I thinkk your perspective is a very American one, and I don’t necessarily mean that as an insult or anything close. But it is an American trait to consider the world as it applies to America, and disregard that which is outside of that.

Boxing is booming in the Phillipines, according to a lot of sources, and also in the UK it is in the middle of another boom. Right now I’d probably take the British top 10 fighters in all weight classes over any other individual country’s, and this is coming from a guy who has been accused lots of times of anti-British bias.

There are lots of places boxing is booming, and lots of reasons to be optimistic. Boxing isn’t dying, it’s just swings and roundabouts. Right now, the American swing isn’t going very high, but it will do again, and all will be once again right with the world. :)

Huh. I said boxing is in deep trouble in the U.S. If you read my new book, you will see that,

based on significant reserach, I point out where boxing is healthy right now and one of those places is the in the Phillipines. Thailand remains strong as well as does South Africa and many other places.

As for my perspective being an American one, that is pure hogwash. I am reasonably well known as one who writes about fighters from all places in the world. Indeed, I have lived in Glasgow, London, Geneva, Seoul, and Singapore in my lfetime and consider myself an international person. I do not know what you mean by “it is an American trait to consider the world as it applies to America, and disregard that which is outside of that.,” because I have never had that trait. I repeat and will debate it. Boxing is in deep shit in the U.S. and in certain other countries such as South Korea and I believ I substantiaed that in my almost 400-page book titled Planet Boxing. Nowadays, every Tom, Dick & Harry gets a PPV slot to appear on… Its outrageous……

I’m going to avoid making a joke about you paying cold hard cash for Holyfield-Botha. :)

While I do agree and wish like hell we still had boxing on ABC/NBC/CBS/anything that isn’t PPV, most of those shows are targeted toward the niche hardcore audience of boxing fans, and they’re on PPV because people don’t really watch boxing much anymore. If there was REAL demand — not just from the marginalized and overall fairly small boxing audience that remains — for networks to air boxing again, they would find a way to make it happen.

Most of the PPV fights now are simply fights that no TV network cares to pick up. Chavez-Duddy might have been a Friday Night Fights in a better world, but their budget is really limited. It’s not good enough for HBO or Showtime, and doesn’t fit Showtime’s model for ShoBox either. I mean it’s really that level of fight — FNF or ShoBox — but it just doesn’t fit with what they do, or what they can do.

So that fight goes to PPV, because there’s obviously an audience out there buying the Chavez shows enough that Top Rank must be making a decent profit on the cards. It sucks in a way, but on the other hand, if it weren’t on PPV, you’d have no option to see it at all.

The reality is what it is, so are stuck,

but I still maintain that television made a decision to turn its back on boxing at a time when it was still a big pull on Wide World of Sports, etc.—

for what reasons?
I don’t know: The demographics they appealed to not = big advertising money—
                      A false morality—

A series of minor decisions that just became the status-quo?

I remember (but this is the same person who recalled the Marciano/Prov story) reading number breakdowns that showed while boxing was no football or basketball, it was still the main draw on those weekend shows. But there were declines on the horizon, I guess. ..

Most likely I’m guessing the demographics were the issue. Well, maybe. It wouldn’t surprise me that the number breakdowns showed that boxing was the main draw on those shows but still got canned for whatever reason. Sometimes it’s as simple as a network deciding to go one way and that not fitting their agenda.

A Large Part of Why TV Dumped Boxing

was the ABC/Don King/John Ort-Ring Mag scandal c. 1976-1977. Don King was projected to do a boxing tournament on ABC tv, and got caught cooking boxers’ records, plus other dubious going’s on, with the help of Ring Magazine. The whole thing blew up all over the place and turned a lot of people off, including me. Plus, the mud splashed all over ABC—people had trusted the networks to keep it clean, and held them morally responsible. The short course can be perused at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ring_(magazine)#Scandal. There is a more in-depth article from the SI Vault, “Some Very Wrong Numbers” by Robert H. Boyle, May 2, 1977, at http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1092354/index/htm.

To Continue

ABC thereupon dumped the tourney, and boxing, no longer considered trustworthy even on tv, never got back on the screen. There’s more to it than that—for one, football, once mostly a high school/college sport, was growing fast, filling the gap, and other factors outside my ken, no doubt, but the ABC/Don King thing was a mortal blow.

He has a long way to go, but I think he just might make it. He seems to have a lot of sincere concerns about the state of legal immigration/illegal immigration and those socio-economic concerns may drive him to the degree. On balnace, I’d say he has a good shot at it. The morons on HBO would lead you to belive it is a fait accompli. I thought Lang was the best of the lot.

I think he’d have stopped Creed in a bloodbath, late, with Creed well ahead on the cards.

Would have stopped Tommy Gunn early, probably KO-3.

In a rubber match with Balboa, Lang finishes him off in the mid-rounds, kind of like Bowe did to Holyfield.

Drago would have held up better, but I see Lang doing a Samuel Peter (vs Wlad Klitschko) and knocking him down a few times, finally finsihing him off around the 10th.

As for Mason ‘The Line’ Dixon (whose nickname I still don’t understand), that would have been over inside 5, as Lang walked through him and smacked the shit out of him.

In fact, Lang is possibly my favourite heavyweight ever. LOL

Quick on his feet too when need be

I enjoyed how Pirog set up the knockout JC – turning southpaw as he moved forward, doubling the jab to the body, back to orthodox – BOOM! Big right hand. No wonder Jacobs never saw it coming. Unorthodox but very effective. Carries himself in there like someone who knows he’ll eventually get you.

Martinez is an outstanding boxing match and Lemieux would be dynamite.

I was thinking about that as I watched on YouTube--

Can this guy, with his movement and quickness, beat Pavlik?

I can’t tell from the one fight just how hard he hits, but he isn’t throwing love kisses.
And it’s become obvious that Pavlik has difficulty with movement.

Interesting fight, but I really would like to see the kid on a busy schedule, one that need not involve “big” HBO fights for a while—different styles, challenges, etc.

oH, I have no doubt he beats KPat this time. He has a very solid chin and body and

I believe will discourage KP when he takes his best shots and then bounces right back like a coiled sprin. This guy is hungry. Pavlik has become somewhat of a suspected head case. Wrong fight for Pavlik. He needs a couple of easy ones first. Pirog is a beast like Kirkland. Pirog is the real deal.

Shit Yeah Ted

My money is on Pirog to beat Pavlik . Pav is past his best . His best was the Miranda fight and first Taylor fight which was a long time ago . If Martinez ( a small middleweight) could do that to Pavlik I believe Pirog could stop him.

I’m one of our bigger Pavlik fans but I think that’s a real tough fight for Kelly. But that’s really the sort of next level he’s looking at. He’s 30, so there’s not much time to fart around if they want to take advantage of his athletic prime, and he already showed legitimate hunger in even fighting Jacobs. I think the way he moves could give Pavlik absolute fits, but Kelly had his bright spots against Sergio, too. Martinez adjusted when Pavlik started building momentum. Could Pirog adjust if Pavlik had his head on straight? That’d be the biggest question.

Are there other fights that you could have gone out of your way to make that you now wish you had? What do you think of your years at light-heavy (I don’t think much of them)? And then I would come back with the one that can’t be answered because it involves seeing what’s coming—“What if you knew what was going to happen when you went back to LH.” Of course that’s like asking the accident victim if he or she wishes they’d taken an alternate route on the day they were smashed—

by Sir Jack Daniels on Aug 3, 2010 6:29 PM EDT reply actions

2. (a) Evander = money,
     (b) Roy = a genuine love for being in there in front of a crowd. I have this theory that everything Roy does is a cry for attention in one way or another: Boxing, basketball, rap-music… he showboats and really want people’s attention. Now he is fading, he is clinging on to that bit of fandom, that nostagic feeling of fans screaming his name.

I loved the fight with Jeff Lacy: as much as it wasn’t a great fight I loved watching Roy showboat and re-enact some great Roy stuff. I don’t quite agree with SC about it being a love of boxing he realised too late that he possessed, I just think Roy Jones wants to be Peter Pan, and have people yelling his name for ever. It’s quite sad, really, that fighters like Roy have to get old, but he’s never going to get that kind of appreciation again either, not from basketball, not from the music, there is very little he can now do to get that adulation he craves, and I think he misses it already. Beating up an old Jeff Lacy wasn’t a great achievement, but as an exhibition where Roy could show off and have fun in there it was great.

Maybe there is a niche there for Jones to really have another go, but this time in exhibition matches. I know I’d pay to see an exhibition between Jones and another faded great, or upcoming speedster, with 12 ounce gloves and emphasis on flair and showmanship rather than knocking the other guy out. I know it would take away from the tension a bit, since Lacy was still trying to knock Roy out and Roy was still showboating which makes it more impressive than it would be ina pure exhibition, but for the sake of Roy’s fame craving I’d like to see him go in and do an exo with someone. Maybe even someone like Tyson, or maybe even hopkins of they could get past the beef between them. Hopkins showed against Pavlike he still has the ability to showboat when he feels like it. :) (Maybe even Naseem Hamed, if he can still shift those hands a bit?)

If it's not too sick a suggestion, what about Meldrick?

Is he still quick? I know he’s punch drunk, but in a purely exhibition bout, it might be fun to see those daggers flashing again.

I’d suggest Calzaghe, but he was such a twat in the first (massively over-due, by at least 10 years) fight between them that I don’t think he deserves that kind of opportunity.

There are a few at lower weights I’d quite like to see. Maybe Morales vs Tszyu, or Barrera in there for a rematch with Hamed….

Before anyone goes berserk, I am only proposing exhibition fights, not actual bouts. :)

Maybe get Benn involved and get Hearns in there to mess about with him. This isn’t even morbid curiosity as such, I think it would be great to see some legends of the ring back in there, throwing some leather, entertaining, enjoying the adulation.

I’d propse Hagler, but I’m not sure he’d understand the meaning or the concept of an ‘exhibition’ bout… :D

Indeed, the episode implicitly attributed this to pugilistic dementia — mentioning, time and again, how Taylor was well past his prime as a fighter…"

I acknowledged that he was punch drunk already

But my only question was, could he, in a purely exhibition fight, still have some fun in there?

Big gloves, an obvious mandate to both men that they’re not trying to knock each other out but rather entertain the crowd, and showboat a bit, with nothing being thrown with real malice, in the same way that old footballers (I’m talking English football) play in Seniors matches where they don’t hit each other in challenges, things are done at half pace, with emphasis on giving the crowd a spectacle.

I appreciate that might sound a bit like WWE when applied to boxing, but I can see it in my mind’s eye, and I think it could be great fun, the way I see it. Guys having a laugh, judges judging based on flair, showmanship, inventiveness and talent displayed rather than clean hard punching, defense, ring generalship and effective aggression. ‘Fights’ over 5 rounds or something.

If Meldrick can still move well, and would be able to enjoy himself out there, then I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be able to participate in that sort of event. Same with all the other older fighters I mentioned above.

Now, Tweek, boxing is a Man sport. There is nothing in the world more Man than boxing. It is Man at his most Man. So when you spar with Ned here, just dig deep into that most Man part of you. (Uncle Jimbo, South Park: Tweek vs Craig)

For someone so clever, you can be so stupid sometimes.

- The word ‘fights’ in inverted commas

- A complete overhaul of judging whihc rewards everything BUT trying to KO someone

- ‘Guys having a laugh’

- ’an obvious mandate to both men that they’re not trying to knock each other out ’

- Big gloves

- ‘things are done at half pace’

Do you need any more elaboration as to what kind of event I am suggesting here?

Or, maybe, you should tell me which of those points leads you to think that, in my vision of this event, Meldrick would be in danger of getting hammered in the head?

Two seperate questions to Two seperate people

If you could ask a question about boxing that you dont have the answer for,

Two seperate questions to Two seperate people

Translation= If Mayweather was in front me and I was interviewing him, his two questions are the first two. When he answers his “TWO” questions, he leaves and walks away.
I asked him two questions.

Pacqauio walks up. I say hey Pacqauio, I got two questions for you. Which are the two at the bottom. He answers his “TWO” questions and walks away.

Why would I tell both of them that I have four questions for them when Im only planning on asking each one of them two?

Now I could have made “TWO” different post, one for each guy, but hey, I didn’t feel like it.

Personally, in a way I have a hard time categorizing it simply as “a boxing movie.” It’s a lot, lot more than that. It’s an intense character study of an incredibly vile human being, and is, simply put, one of the greatest films ever made. In my view, if you do put it in the category of boxing movies (and understandably, since it’s about a boxer), nothing else is even close to it as far as being a great film. Not even close.

I always remember the story of the movie’s premiere, and Lamotta watching the film, and he catches up with his ex-wife after and says something to the effect of, “I didn’t realize I was that bad.” Her response, “You were worse.”

Yes, rabbit punching, headbutting, breaking (not bending) the rules, and getting some help from an incompetent referee who allowed all that crap to go on. I don’t think that referee was anti-McClellan, I think he was anti-knowing what the hell he was doing in there. One way of putting it is that he “did what he had to do,” and it’s the nice way of putting it, and God knows a ton of fighters have broken those same rules countless times. Evander Holyfield keeps getting Taco Bell commercials and stuff like that and I think if you happen to be in an elevator with him he’ll headbutt you out of habit.

Theres been a stack of good rugby league players of greek descent here in Oz . Aussie captain George Peponis . Australian test player Braith Anasta . West Tigers forward John Skandalis . West Tigers Steve Georgalis . The Manly thug from the early 70s Peter Peters . Back in the 70s there was a famous winger Fonda Metassa ( a top bloke but not a real hard man ) who was a bit of a chick magnet . As is Mark " the scud" Philipoussis who is better known for pulling models and starring in a shitty reality tv show than he is for making the US Open and Wimbledon finals . Cheers Mate.

Yeah, that’s what I’m trying to say. I blame the referee for having no control of that fight. I have nothing in the world against Nigel Benn, who also hosted a fundraiser for the G-Man later on.

But not by me. Benn was one of my all time favorites. The Gman fight was an unfortunate

one that was terribly tragic and essentially ended Benn’s career and Gman’s normal life.
Had the ref stopped the fight early, who knows what might have happened. To this day, i think the dmage was done by an accidental head butt, but that’s apersonal view based, in part, by the way he was blinking shortly after the butt.

That was an all-out war—all-out with both fighters spent at the end. It was total fury. In a firefight like that, rukes sometimes get broken unitentionally. The fury of the fight kind of transcends everything.

I agree, some fights dig deeper into primal – more violent than blatant cheating; a different motivation. And this is where the ref should step in, if need be. As Mr 44 says – “don’t blame the fighter.” – I subscribe to the headbutt + JC’s dehydration theory. I’d never send a dehydrated fighter into the ring.

Its funny how the heavyweights seem to have less fatalities . Here's my question Ted...

why does a fighters management get to pick his fights instead of an organization picking the two fighters like in MMA.If the latter happened like in MMA then we as Boxing fans would see far more competative fights instead of mismatches an fighters posturing and avoiding other fighters.A major reason why MMa is surging ahead IMO.

It's not a matter of "IF" the North will break you. It's a matter of "WHEN" the North will break you.For up here every year counts as two on the outside.

Ghost, I could never really figure that out, but I totally agree with you. MMA is surging while boxing is stepping on its own toes.

I think one way boxing is showing some creativity is by haveing the tourneys and prizefighter stuff. Of course greed and quasi-corruption play a big role in boxing.

Boxing has eaten itself......

and mma hasn’t had a chance to yet .

I was at a small organisations mma bash last week and the place was packed.
Good fights and no bullshit = crowds
Bad matchmaking/ avoiding and bullshit galore = decline .

Whatever you think of Dana White , the guy is a poster boy for good business .
While boxing continues down the Alphabet road it will continue to punch itself in the knackers ever single step .
Problem is that the only way to solve the issues are to rip it up and start again ….and that will never happen .

by Sir Jack Daniels on Aug 7, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It's

cause the best fight the best in MMA.Fighters never stay unbeaten because each division is loaded with great fighters and they all fight eachoter.Unlike in Boxing where two undefeateds rarely meet and almost NEVER when they’re both top dogs.In Boxing they posture and argue over who gets how much and where the fight will take place, argue about the gloves, argue about the refs and judges, argue about who gets to come into the ring last,etc.,etc., etc.In the UFC Dana White and his staff tell the fighters who they,re gonna fight, when they,re gonna, fight and make all the rules.Like it or lump it !!! Boxing needs to do the same and follow suit !!!

It's not a matter of "IF" the North will break you. It's a matter of "WHEN" the North will break you.For up here every year counts as two on the outside.

Would be nice if they’d let you depart for other places.

Agreed: Super-Six fighters facing the best. Bute needs more comp. than Brinkley.

Sucks when the state controls your life, huh? There’s prison, but then parole/probation.

The reason

that I haven’t been able to post for a couple of months was because the Police seized my computer.I get these random checks every now and again. It sucks but what can I do.A notorious gang’s member put a gun in my 21 years old sons mouth so I had to react !!! the end result was the seizure. My probationary terms ban me from associating with any gang membersand frm entering any public bars or nightclubs, etc., etc.,.Anyways I’m back on but I have to post from various different computers.Sorry for the story.Just thought I’d clue my many friends here into why I sometimes have to disappear for a month here or there.peace…

Atlas

gets ripped a lot for his work on ESPN, however, he’s gotten better with his insight….. After all, Atlas was not a trained TV announcer….. He’s worked on it……

Again, beware, Bob Papa and Max Kellerman will be HBO’s lead boyz in the near future after Lampley and Merchant get canned for old age, etc…….

I liked Barry Tompkins back in the 80s on HBO…. Not sure why he was offed back in 1989……… That’s where Jim Lampley pulled in……… Lamps is only 61; he’s got time left for work…….. Merchant is 78 and a little senile; he’s just about done…….

STILL! HBO has gone whacky the last few years……… Their fight cards have dipped……. However, they still provide the best production of any other network……… Sorry to burst a bubble, but Showtime is still # 2………… ESPN utterly sucks azz with a McDonald’s straw……

Certainly Might

When interviewing Pacquaio just before a recent major bout, not sure think Cotto, right before the match, with Pac all suited up, hands wrapped, just about time to start the ring walk, in-the-zone time totally for any fighter, idiot Merchant infuriated, infuriated, enraged my friend and boxing buddy Jim from across the street & me by asking Pac, right there, right then, if Z. Gorez’s (sp?) desperate head injuries and subsequent and ongoing fight for survival/recovery might in any way have an impact on Pac’s attitude/performance, and what did he think about it generally, and would he be thinking about during the fight, etc., the sabataging subversive old fool, just what any fighter needs to think about as he enters the ring—Jim’s lady Brenda was quite shocked at the response this got from us—loud, profane, and prolonged. And we weren’t even rooting for Pacquaio.

Over the years his quirks have leaned toward pure mean-spiritedness, IMO. It’s uncomfortable at times, but thankfully it seems like most fighters know better and just blow him off.

People, well, there are some I can’t get emotional about, but dogs = a true connection.
It’s obvious that Ted loves his dog, and that posters who are dog owners, have no trouble understanding.

Even considering a time that my pup (who is no longer a pup) will face what age brings is uncomfortable.

had a small role in James Bond’s “Diamonds Are Forever” from 1971….. I recorded several ‘Bond’ flicks at the ranch off of the Encore channel and I’m currently in the midst of reviewing them this week……. I did the film yesterday, but failed to catch Haig’s scenes……. I’m sure its rather small, but I don’t care……. I like Haig………

Note:

“Diamonds” from ‘71 was Connery’s LAST effort as James Bond until his 1983 comeback with “Never Say Never Again.” WORD!!

Question re Selcuk Aydin vs Said Ouali, 4/17/09

Not an important question, but I’ve often wondered, was it just me or was there a really strange, hostile atmosphere in the ring at this fight. They appeared to really, genuinely loathe each other—this is subjective, obviously, but it also seemed stark— real, deep hostility, and a sense of tension even among those officiating. Has this got anything to do with religious tensions, or what? I noticed that Ouali wears a 6-pointed star, like a Star of David, on his trunks, like those of Zab Judah and Max Baer. Both men were described by the ShoBox commentators as Muslim. I’ve seen them each fight since (possibly on tape), and on those broadcasts each was again described as Muslim. So what is the star about, and what was the cause of the tension? Or am I imagining things?

by BoxAnne on Aug 11, 2010 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

The star on Ouali's trunks was the star of Morocco

5 points, like what’s on the Morroccan flag.

Well Aydin is a Turk. Said is from Morocco. They are both intense, but I didn’t sense any religious-related hostility in there. Now if Quali had been an Armenian, well maybe.

I think that Star od David might have something to do with being a

Thank you

I just couldn’t figure it out—to me, it was the creepiest atmosphere I’d ever seen at a fight, must have been my mood. How right you are re Armenian. My guy was 1/2 Armenian, the soul of easy-going tolerance—the only time I ever saw him rocked was when at a party in Manhattan, while enjoying conversation with a man he’d never met before, he realized the guy was Turkish. Both perfectly lovely men actually startled and pulled physically back, then quickly recovered their cool and carried on, but wow!

by BoxAnne on Aug 11, 2010 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually when Arthur Abraham fought Mahir Oral, it came close to an Armanian-Turk thing,

yet both showed great sprotmanship.Oral was born and raised in Hamburg-Finkenwerder as child of Turkish immigrants

Many of his opponents were bigger than him. Bill Wilson weighed 230 and was sent to Providence Dreamland forthwith.

Johnny Shkor weighed 220 and lasted 6.The aptly named Humphrey Jackson went at 254 and was taken out in a minute. If you asked Ther Rock that question, his answer would be “WTF, Most of the guys I fought outweighed me.”
