Friday Night Fights Open Thread: Delvin Rodriguez v. Ashley Theophane
Tonight's Friday Night Fights is live from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma, and in the main event, Delvin Rodriguez will face Ashley Theophane.
Rodriguez (25-4-2, 14 KO) has lost two of his last three, but beat Mike Arnaoutis his last time out. At 30, the Dominican-born Connecticut resident has settled in as a generally enjoyable fighter to watch who likely won't be a serious contender in his career, but may be able to squeeze a couple more title shots out of the ridiculous welterweight division.
His opponent Theophane (26-4-1, 7 KO) is a U.K. native who has fought several times in the United States and Germany. In his last U.S. appearance, Theophane gave highly-touted prospect Danny Garcia all he could handle in an SD-10 loss at 140 pounds. That fight was in El Paso this past February, the co-feature to the Antonio Escalante-Mickey Roman war.
Tonight's co-feature has Chicago's Don "Da Bomb" George (20-0-1, 17 KO) taking on Francisco Sierra (21-3, 20 KO). George had some difficulty in his last bout with Osamanu Adama on ShoBox. Sierra is a Mexican banger whose record is super fluffy in spots, but he does have decent wins over the likes of Esteban Camou and Henry Porras. He was knocked out by Edison Miranda in 2:16 a couple of fights ago.

I actually liked the showboating Sierra did there strategically. When you’re the “opponent”, you have to worry that the judges might go on autopilot again. The showboating signals that the fighter at least thinks he’s the boss, which means the judges have to consider that prospect too.
Damn, thought this started at 10. What’d I miss, aside from George apparently getting a New Jack special?

George down now

Well, this should about do it for the incredibly premature pushing of Don George. He seems like a good dude but boy is he not very good.

Thank God the George corner didn't sneak a DQ out of that

Also, I think R7
was a bona fide 8-8 round (he scored a knock down too). Don’t see that every day.
I hope this gets Sierra more fights. He looks like a fun fighter to watch. The lanky frame kinda reminds me of Martin Honorio.

Yeah, he telegraphs his punches and seems to lack defense, but his uppercut is pretty vicious

I liked watching Sierra, but I honestly take more away from this on George’s side. He’s not a prospect. They buffed up his record with real easy fights, he had real trouble with Adama, and he got flattened by Sierra.

Sierra is like a worse Edison Miranda
Which provides a solid cap on his career, but it’s still fun to watch.

This is a mismatch

That was some comedy at the end of the fight
It was a pretty serious wobble/running out of gas there at the end of the fight there. Almost a Bute/Andrade repeat there except Theopane doesn’t have that kind of power/willingness to let the hands go.
95-95, 96-94, 96-94 THEOPHANE WINS
ROBBERY!

Rodriguez clearly won the first 5 rounds
There is no way Theophane won 6 rounds in this one. Absolute robbery.

Two of them had it a Theophane win and the other had it a draw.

Seriously?
I thought the announcement was all but a formality. There is no way Rodriguez lost that. Terrible decision.
Delvin
Had double the number of power shots landed than Theophane. How can you watch that bout and think that Ashley won the fight? Also did you see how surprised Theophane was to win the fight, it was like he just won the lottery!
Petty thing to pick on, but ESPN should try and spell Chris Arreola's name right
