Friday Night Fights Open Thread: Delvin Rodriguez v. Ashley Theophane

Box_e_fnf_110_medium Tonight's Friday Night Fights is live from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma, and in the main event, Delvin Rodriguez will face Ashley Theophane.

Rodriguez (25-4-2, 14 KO) has lost two of his last three, but beat Mike Arnaoutis his last time out. At 30, the Dominican-born Connecticut resident has settled in as a generally enjoyable fighter to watch who likely won't be a serious contender in his career, but may be able to squeeze a couple more title shots out of the ridiculous welterweight division.

His opponent Theophane (26-4-1, 7 KO) is a U.K. native who has fought several times in the United States and Germany. In his last U.S. appearance, Theophane gave highly-touted prospect Danny Garcia all he could handle in an SD-10 loss at 140 pounds. That fight was in El Paso this past February, the co-feature to the Antonio Escalante-Mickey Roman war.

Tonight's co-feature has Chicago's Don "Da Bomb" George (20-0-1, 17 KO) taking on Francisco Sierra (21-3, 20 KO). George had some difficulty in his last bout with Osamanu Adama on ShoBox. Sierra is a Mexican banger whose record is super fluffy in spots, but he does have decent wins over the likes of Esteban Camou and Henry Porras. He was knocked out by Edison Miranda in 2:16 a couple of fights ago.

Sierra 10-9. Good back and forth action

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2010 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

I actually liked the showboating Sierra did there strategically. When you’re the “opponent”, you have to worry that the judges might go on autopilot again. The showboating signals that the fighter at least thinks he’s the boss, which means the judges have to consider that prospect too.

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2010 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

Of course it might be moot.

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2010 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

10-9, 20-18 Sierra (and George is lucky that wasn’t 10-8).

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2010 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

10-9, 30-27 Sierra

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2010 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

Sierra 10-9, but closer. 40-36 Sierra.

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2010 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

George motions to tap gloves, Sierra taps with one while simultaneously unleashing a huge overhand right with the other.

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2010 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

Damn, thought this started at 10. What’d I miss, aside from George apparently getting a New Jack special?

by Verklemptomaniac on Jul 30, 2010 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

It’s solid action actually, but Sierra is just beating up on this guy. It’s starting to get painful.

Please don’t tell me we’re going to have another Antwone Smith/Henry Crawford fight. Gerald Ritter was the ref there — apparently Gary Ritter also wants to play the “let’s get a fighter killed” game (the doctor sure as hell won’t do anything).

George is total fail this evening. He won’t punch except after the clinch, and he doesn’t throw like an inside fighter.
