My son’s mate boxes. He was talking about Danny Jacobs to me earlier today. He says he’s one to watch. What’s he like?

by Phill on Jul 31, 2010 6:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Real good prospect. Probably won’t ever be a huge star or anything, but should have a really good career. Brick had a great breakdown of Jacobs (and Fernando Guerrero) last year. Here it is.

Thanks

Just read it. I’ll look out for him. It’s on live 2am here, so I’ll watch it tomorrow. What’s your gut feeling for Marquez Diaz?
Some are saying Marquez will ko Diaz quicker this time. I’m not so sure.

by Phill on Jul 31, 2010 6:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He's been fighting safety-first a lot more lately

And after meeting him in person, it was obvious that he just doesn’t like the spotlight, so I really doubt he’ll ever be a star, even if he does end up being a P4P level fighter.

Lampley better be up for it tonight

None of this “BANG!” and “Roberto Guerrero” nonsense.

I’m certainly looking forward to this fight. Marquez is going to smash Diaz in 6 and finish with a TKO due to multiple knockdowns.

BIKA-MENDY RD 1

Place is still dead empty. Why they’re doing this fight now and not an hour from now, I have no frigging idea.

Both guys are in fantastic shape. Bika pops out a couple of jabs, and seems to have a speed advantage. Bika steps in, nails Mendy with a headbutt and then follows up with a big right hand. Bika gets Mendy in the corner AND HOLY SHIT!!!! WHAT JUST HAPPENED!!!!

BIKA KNOCKED OUT MENDY, BUT UPPERCUTTED WHEN HE WAS DOWN AND MENDY IS OUT COLD!!!

He should just take more fights

I realize his (very very ugly) wife just had a kid a while ago, but he needs to earn some bread. He should be fighting on ESPN every three months, destroying everyone until the public demands a Bute rematch, or something. Or even better, try to move up the rankings to become Stieglitz’s mandatory, who I think Bika would crush.

Linares-Juarez R1

Let’s see if Rocky decides to fight before the final round. Just Jim and Manny tonight. I’ll be. Linares jabbing and moving around the ring, Juarez being Juarez. Manny compliments his pressure. And Rocky is coming in and standing there. He’s jabbing a bit. Neither guy is exactly lighting it up and it’s a winnable round with 40 seconds to go. Rocky shoots a right, doesn’t land. I really have no idea what these two are calling. Rocky is getting in and standing like he always does. Now he opens up with ten seconds left in the round trying to steal it, and lands a couple body shots, but nothing big. I’d call it a feeling out round, but this is Rocky Juarez we’re talking about. He’s throwing a bit, I suppose, but not landing much at all.

Linares-Juarez R2

Now Rocky’s getting in some effective pressure, actually throwing some once he presses Linares back to the ropes. He does seem to have a plan. Good left by Linares. He’s shooting an uppercut that Rocky seems a bit tentative about. Now it’s all Linares throwing and Rocky just following him around. Linares has taken firm control of this round. So with Linares throwing, Juarez disappears this round. Early in the round Rocky did some good work, but Linares is starting to pepper him now. Rocky looks to throw again after the ten second notice comes.

Linares 10-9

And what do you know? Juarez isn’t throwing this round either, and Linares is shooting the jab around. Good left hook to the body by Juarez, but Linares answers. Juarez with a right to the head that lands. Linares comes back with a slapping left hook and two stiff jabs. Rocky fighting back now at least. Rocky’s best round, I think, but I still give it to Linares close.

Juarez pressing him to the ropes and throwing, but just not getting anything clean and solid in. I mean that’s the story of his best moments, for the most part. He does press Linares back, and he will throw, but it’s not working. Linares opens up now with a combination. Juarez has him pressed back again, and all he does is eat an uppercut for his work, and Linares just gets away. Linares still landing cleaner, sharper punchers. Rocky is about as spirited as he gets tonight, and he’s doing good work at the end of the round, but Linares rips back at him, too.

Jorge’s just slicker, has more tools — just a better fighter. At this point I really think Rocky has only a puncher’s chance. It’s not that he’s fighting really badly, I just don’t think he’s going to have done enough to win this fight on the cards unless he racks up a couple knockdowns or something. And this isn’t a bad fight. It’s not blistering, but they’re active and it’s perfectly enjoyable to watch. Both guys are probably about as good as you could expect them to be.

Good little right by Juarez gets in, but didn’t look like he had a lot of zip on it. Juarez with a good left hook to the body. Rocky’s backing him down physically now, with actual punches. Linares with the uppercut, and Rocky goes down!

He looks wobbly as hell, but the bell saves him when he gets up. Lampley thinks he might have hurt his knee.

Linares-Juarez R6

Hurrld has the same score I do.

Linares looking to get Juarez to bite into that uppercut again. That’s been his best punch tonight. Juarez is going back now. Linares is totally in control and Rocky is clearly still a little cobwebbed. Right from Juarez lands, and now he’s coming forward again. Uppercut lands again for Linares. That thing is pretty tonight and Juarez really has no answer for it. Another Linares round. Rocky’s in a giant hole now.

Linares might yet make good on Golden Boy’s investment of him. Juarez might be fodder, but he’s first-class fodder, and Linares is looking slick and creative here.

Rocky’s really doing the best he can, but he’s just not good enough. He’s getting hit a lot, pressuring, as always isn’t really active enough (but he’s a bit more active than usual, or so it seems). Good right by Linares with about a minute left in the round, after two minutes of the same thing we’ve seen most of this fight. Left hook inside by Linares. He’s zoning on on Juarez. They keep talking about Rocky Juarez’s lethal left hook, but I don’t think he’s landed one good left hook this entire fight.

Linares-Juarez R8

The commentary is being very kind to Rocky, and I know how they feel, because I do think this is as good as he can do, but this fight is not remotely close, really. Linares has for the most part dominated. It hasn’t been easy domination, but he’s done a great job neutralizing Juarez when Rocky throws, and staying active when Rocky doesn’t. Linares starts unleashing his speed, throwing every punch he has while Juarez stands there a bit overwhelmed. Rocky just eats two stiff jabs. Linares just firing away now, and Rocky throws back, but it’s met with another sharp left from Linares. Another stiff jab — those are routinely snapping Juarez’s head back now. Some boo birds are out for something or other.

Another Linares round, and not close.

Linares-Juarez R9

Lederman whines that Jorge Linares is boring. Lampley laments that Linares is taking NO RISKS. He’s pretty effectively dominated Rocky Juarez this entire fight and stayed plenty active, but that’s apparently not good enough. I don’t know.

Rocky finally opening up and throwing some good, hard shots — and then slows down a bit. But he’s got Linares really moving back now and he’s hitting him more. Linares throws the uppercuts back, though. It is the ninth round, it’s wake-up time for Juarez. He comes in looking for a chopping left, but gets hit, and then TAGS LINARES! Rocky’s alive! Holy cow!

Linares-Juarez R10

Rocky is coming out fast. It’s now or never. Left hook Linares. And they’re trading a little. I’d love to see a good final round firefight to open this show up. Linares’ jab is still a frozen rope of a punch. Juarez with a good shot, and now Linares seems like he just doesn’t want a lot to do with Rocky. Right hand Juarez! Imagine if Rocky Juarez decided to do this in the 4th or 5th round sometime. Linares fighting back, but Rocky’s leading the action this round. Linares is gassing the SLIGHTEST bit — he’s not out of gas, but he’s noticeably tiring a little bit. Since this is the last round, won’t hurt him probably.

About a minute left. Linares throwing, Juarez throwing, but no big sustained action from either man. Linares understandably is on his bike a bit. Linares sneaks this round, I think — Juarez gave it his all, but ate as much if not more leather than he landed.

Casamayor really has nothing in there. Every time he’s hit he seems affected by it, and he has no willingness to engage, really. Nothing on his punches. No reflexes. No hand speed. This is a shame. He was a tremendous fighter at his best and you never like to see a guy lose it to this degree.

Well if the crowd had any pep, it’s gone now. This is an awful, awful fight. Manny keeps saying that Casamayor is “making Guerrero fight (Casamayor’s) fight.” That is not even kind of what this is. This is a shot fighter who has no interest in engaging and a guy with no interest in putting us out of our misery watching him.

Casamayor sort of fighting in the first minute of this round. This is some kinda rotten fight when Casamayor, with this performance, has an argument in any round, let alone the one earlier and now THIS ONE. Guerrero is going to turn into another Rocky Juarez, I think. Once he really steps into the world class I just can’t see him beating top fighters.

Jacobs-Pirog R1

I’d take Lampley more seriously on his criticism of this being for an alphabet belt if he’d had the same spiel when Berto won that belt over Miki Rodriguez. Danny’s active to start, and goes southpaw. Pirog is giving him some awkward looks early. Nearly clashed heads hard, but just avoided it. This is a feeling-out round where it actually looks like both guys are trying to figure out what they can or can’t do. Jacobs hit with a good right hand by Pirog. Jacobs throws a few near the end of the round, but they’re blocked.

Pirog 10-9, but very close (thought he nicked it with the best punch of the round, even until then)

Jacobs-Pirog R2

Jacobs’ corner wants to see him use his speed. That would seem to be the smart thing. I think it’s the one area where he has a clear advantage.

Big right by Pirog, Jacobs NEARLY goes down but escapes off the ropes! Pirog is coming out to fight. Pirog pops him with a couple potshots. Pirog definitely has showed up, he’s giving Jacobs a lot of interesting looks both offensively and defensively, and he looks EXCEPTIONALLY calm and confident. He’s leading every bit of the action this round. Good uppercut! Two body shots! Jacobs is having a hell of a rough round.

Sharp jab from Jacobs. But Pirog is just not backing off at all. Jacobs looks pretty uncomfortable out there. Pirog is coming at him, throwing, and has some terrific upper body movement. Dominant round for Pirog, but Jacobs flurries again late, or at least tries to.

Jacobs-Pirog R3

There’s a counter right from Jacobs. He’s bouncing around a lot more to start this round, trying to stay away and use his footwork and maybe his hand speed some more. Which is smart. Jacobs LUUUUNGES in with a left hand, then shoots a right, and neither land. Pirog is stalking him, playing good defense, and even though he’s not landing as much as he did last round, he’s clearly dictating this pace. But Jacobs is definitely fighting smarter this round — using his speed is what he has to do, and he’s sure trying to.

Pirog’s head movement is terrific. I mean goddamn. Manny might be right about Pirog making Jacobs expend more energy on movement than he really wants to. Good right by Jacobs! And I think he takes this round.

Jacobs was described to me as a guy who does a lot of things pretty well, but he does have some real sharp talents, especially that speed. Like how he whips the straight left from the southpaw stance, too. I’ve got the fight even, but I understand giving the 1st round to Pirog, obviously. And Pirog will continue to get his, too.

Jacobs-Pirog R4

Now both guys are using a lot of movement to make the other miss. Sneaky little right by Pirog, then he taunts Jacobs. Now he’s talking, and Jacobs whacks him with a hard left hand. Jacobs looking to the body some more this round. Jacobs throwing, Pirog lands, Jacobs throws back again. This is developing into a damn interesting fight.

Good shots by Jacobs at the end of the round and Pirog never got into a real rhythm offensively in this frame.

How about Pirog-Guerrero?

Usually, the WBO makes a new titlist take a mandatory in his first fight. The top 3 guys after him are Gennady Golovkin (who’s fighting for a different title in a few weeks), Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and Fernando Guerrero. I’d love to see him fight any of those guys.

The future of the division is finally here.

Marquez-Diaz R1

Marquez with a good left hook, and he’s coming out to be aggressive it appears, shooting his jab first. Diaz not throwing a lot in the first minute. Marquez with a right over the top, doesn’t land square. Marquez goes to the body. Short little trade. They’re not warring right out this time, but Marquez starts throwing bombs. Diaz is tentative in there. And he’s getting hit for it. He looks overmatched already. But there’s a stiff left from Diaz. Right hand scrapes Marquez. Another good right by Diaz! He’s picking it up. Here he comes! This will, without question, fire up sooner than later. Good first round.

Marquez-Diaz R2

Daiz trying to get inside, and there’s Marquez waiting for him. Every little exchange they have is hot. Brief, but hot. Marquez gets a body shit, Diaz clips him with a right upstairs. Diaz jabbing, Marquez trying to keep him back with his own in return. Diaz is clearly not as intent to war this time. And a good left hook, and another from Diaz. He’s not fighting poorly at all. What he did last time didn’t work, so he’s trying to switch it up. I can’t help but think Marquez will adjust and find a way to batter him, but so far this is quite interesting and a good fight.

Marquez really wants to war. You can feel it. But Diaz isn’t letting him do it just yet. Diaz wings a massive left that misses, but ends the round with a decent hook.

Diaz’s corner wants the jab setting up the right hand.

Marquez is locked in trying to catch Diaz coming in on a counter, and Diaz is doing a good job so far not getting caught with those shots. Marquez is throwing so much harder than Diaz, but Diaz is doing a lot of good work too. And Diaz is making him miss more than last time. Now here they go for a second — but Diaz again calms himself down. Then unleashes some shots to the body. Crowd is getting hot. And rightly so, this is a very good fight so far.

Marquez starting to catch Diaz with those counter shots a little more. And now Marquez is throwing big and a big right lands! And a left hook! Marquez is starting to time him a bit, I think.

Marquez swipes him with a left hook. Slower pace this round, but Marquez rocks him with a hard shot! Diaz keeps his feet, but he’s hit again! Diaz staying away, staying away, but Marquez is stalking and throwing hard shots! Diaz keeps his cool and might be able to get his legs back. That’s a big change for Juan Diaz. Marquez smells blood, though. And we know he’s got the killer instinct.

But Diaz does get his legs back, it appears. And Marquez pops him with a left hook a few moments later. Diaz charges, doesn’t get much for it. This became a survival round for Juan Diaz. Marquez with a right.

Marquez back to trying to flat out time Diaz coming in, but Diaz isn’t coming in as recklessly as usual. He might have to at some point. More and more, JMM is trying to bait Diaz with the feints. Diaz is not fighting poorly at all, but he’s just a class below Marquez. Right hand shot by Marquez! Diaz is staying away, staying away, just not accomplishing much offensively. And another right hand lands! I mean, really, Diaz is doing his best. He’s trying something new, and really trying things that are working as well as you could hope, but he’s not as good as Marquez. I think that’s where we’re at with this fight.

Marquez continues to stalk Diaz, who continues to circle. Then Diaz gets him with a thudding little right, and Marquez loves it — that’s exactly what he wants. He wants to trade. And Diaz is not obliging too often tonight. It’s a good fight, but not near last year’s fight. Good left hook and a good right by Marquez! And Diaz ties up. Marquez lands a few shots, but not in a great place to do big damage. But he’s starting to really take over this fight and it feels inevitable now. This might go all 12, but if it does it’s because Diaz just never really goes for it, I’m feeling.

At this point in the fight, while I admire his willingness to try something new, it’s obvious THIS isn’t working either. Maybe if he starts rushing, he can catch Marquez slumbering just a bit. Marquez pounds Diaz moments after Diaz did throw a flurry, none of which landed much. Diaz did a couple good things again this round, but again Marquez did more good work. He’s just better. I mean that’s all there is to it.

Holy SHIT, Jim Lampley has ignored the other four or so clinches from Diaz tonight and insists that that one was the first of the two fights. Marquez has a lot of gas left and wants to use it. Diaz has no real interest in fighting Marquez anymore. Diaz is really not doing much of anything anymore, and this has turned into a genuine disappointment. I liked him trying something new, but that’s clearly not working at all. It’s almost the 10th round. It’s time to go for it if you actually came to win. No more of this “beautiful! stay on the outside!” shit. He has no chance of winning this fight if he doesn’t rip at Marquez and fast.

Marquez-Diaz R11

Diaz with a left hook. But that’s about all he does. There’s no real follow-up. Marquez’s right eye is about swollen totally shut, but Diaz just is not attacking. Good uppercut by Marquez, but probably not totally on point because Diaz didn’t react as much as it appeared he might have. Camera angle was from behind on the shot. Marquez has taken his foot off the gas a bit. Diaz wobbles a hair, but probably more balance. Round ends just after.

Diaz 10-9
Marquez 108-101

Diaz’s corner tells him to jab going into the final round of a fight that he is in no way close to winning on points.

Triple up the jab?

That’s Ronnie Shields’ advice? When did he turn into Jack Leow?

Marquez-Diaz R12

Marquez’s intensity is still there, kind of, but it feels a bit forced. Like he’s doing just enough to keep Diaz at bay more than really trying to finish him off anymore. Marquez is 36 and has this fight in the bag, and he’s got a money fight coming next. He’s gotten marked up some. Actually he looks really unfocused in the last minute, at least for a moment, and then he wakes up on a Diaz left hook. Marquez and Diaz throw hard to end the bout, and Marquez gets the best of it. No real pleasantries at the end of the fight are exchanged.

I can’t lie — this was a perfectly alright fight, and sadly the best PPV main event of 2010, but it was very disappointing to me.

Marquez 10-9
Marquez 118-110

Diaz seemed to be fighting in survive mode for far too much of that

over-under

Marquez points in fight or Diaz points on LSAT?

by Tysox88 on Aug 1, 2010 12:46 AM EDT reply actions

Under. Don’t you get 200 for spelling your name right?

by El Destruyo on Aug 1, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

For the LSAT, only 120. But still, the point remains.

I predict 152. But I bet Houston lets him in if he can break 145.

yep. and where he’s from and where he works for a firm. or worked – I don’t know if he’s still there. But I believe he’s said he wants to be a D.A., and Harris County (Houston), is where’d he likely do that.

Also, obvious statement.

Pirog v. Jacobs was the fight of the night. As I think some of us suspected before this one started.

I'm trying not to let the fact that most of this fight was disappointingly one-sided

distract me from how much I just enjoy watching the Marquez engine when it is firing on all cylinders like that.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the guy is 38 years old.

Well, that was disapointing...

But it was wonderful to watch Pirog. Well worth staying up sober until 6am.

Thanks for the entertaining comments lads.

Great job again SC and Brick.
