This is not a fan post
but is to mention that it is-or is about--the anniversary of the Jack Johnson/ James Jefferies fight, and there is a one page article in the Sunday NY Times (with two pictures) on the bout. The article is well written and has some facts that I--at least--didn't know.
You may or may not want to put a little banner heading up, but I thought I'd mention it.

Well,
I have no idea how the above was transposed into Romanian, but I never meant to publish a fan post to begin with. Just wanted to point out to the editors that we are at, or near, the anniversary of the Jack Johnson/James J. Jeffries bout and that the Sunday New York Times ran a nice little article in their sports section with two photos and some interesting information.
Thought they might like to run a little banner headline pointing folks to the article.
Next time I realize that I can’t get them directly, I’ll just let the idea go!!
Don't worry about it
Put it in a fanpost or a fanshot, and we’ll usually pick it up. Just because it’s the weekend of the 4th, we’re a little show on posting things up, plus it’s a slow news cycle.

Public Image Limited
I saw them twice , most shambolic " efforts" at presenting live music Ive ever seen . Keith Levene was nodding off on the local smack , Lydon didnt give a shit and both gigs ended in semi riots with the disgruntled punters basically booing em off stage .

Saw em in Manchester
back in 85 when they had it together enough to play a killer gig. Public Image sent the place nuts. Saw the Cramps play the following night. But Yeah Lydon can be a complete c*nt.

Re the pardon
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/04/sports/04sportsbriefs-pardon.html

However, I have always questioned Senator John McCain's motives here.
He has used this issue for years and perhaps has milked it dry politically speaking, but at leats he has been one of the few who has been vocal.. But where is the BWAA? Hauser, Borges, Kimball, etc? Where is HBO? Where is the ACLU? Where is the Hall of Fame? Where are other related-institutions? This entire thing was steepped in racial bullshite and should be eradicated. Why the delay, why?
Pray for Nick Charles
I can't help but be of two minds about these pardons
that come about 100 years after the fact. It’s great that justice is eventually served.
But it’s both a little late and pretty easy to do at time’s distance.
Reading about the recent Bloody Sunday findings brought a similar feeling in me; however, Ireland is not my country and it seemed to make a lot of folks—including kin of the killed—happy.
So, it’s not my place to say.
About the Jeffries story, we can’t know what is actually fact or not, but the image of Jeffries looking out into the night and weeping interested me. Just knowing, and contrary to what they tell us and we sometimes believe, a fighter must have a pretty clear idea when he is not going to get back what was once his—that he is done and past it and what is coming will not be “greatness” but a sorry pantomime of what used to be greatness.
It’s a tough life and we often cannot go back on wrong decisions.
Brings to mind
the Australian government’s long standing refusal to officially apologise to the Stolen Generations. The Rudd government finally stepped up and said “sorry” to the Indigenous people, who for 60 years (1909-1969) had their children forcibly removed from them.
My apologies for the political content.

Well, technically, it was not a "ewrong" dceision, but if we can pardon Marc Rich, surley, we
can give JJ son=me consideration. I realize that the Mann Act was law at the time and that JJ probably broke that law at the time, but the law was a race-based one. Morally, I can make a case for the pardon but I suppose it would be a difficult thing to do on a legal basis.

Well, I think New Englanders often
love lakeside communities, tacky and semi-tacky beach towns
and beautiful villages along beaches.
That, at least, has been my experience.
Narragansett Beach is one that’s morphed from tacky to condo—
Condo and expensive restaurants.

before Florida decided to choose where I live, had a beach, Siesta Key, that is consistently rated in the top 3 0r 4 nationally.

Well, I have a nice strawberry farm next to my 200 acres, lots of
animals that are protected by yours truly, streams with fish that run through the dense and wooded acreage, a town of less than 10,000 people for which I presently hold 3 political offices (think control freak), views of the Moat Mountain range and Mt. Washington, Conway Lake (not tacky), Hales Location (semi-tacky), great biking and sking and golfing, and all-in all a great tourist town. Moreover, my old man could kick the crap out of yours.

I have tattooed hookers, skels, and hardworking neighbors.
Cats, dogs, an occasional skunk live nearby. Got to be rats.
Some trees and a polluted stream that runs through the city.
There is a city garden a few blocks away. No mountains.
I don’t bike, ski, or visit myself upon any other yuppie sports.
My old man was a for-real athlete who had meat hooks instead of the skinny old-witch hands I got, only I’d be cheering for your pops. No tourists come to Atttleboro.

lake communities/beach towns
We have this phenomenon in the Great Lakes too, as you’d likely expect. I’m sure it’s pretty similar. Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes all have these towns along the shore, and then there are the little inland lake towns, especially in NW Indiana/SW Michigan, that wind up owned mostly by Chicagoans who tell you about how they love to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, then they drive like assholes and ruin your summer. Actually they’re mostly very nice people who really do appreciate the chance to get out of the city.

The Massholes have actually been migrating this way in the summer at a fairly alarming rate in the last four or five years. I don’t blame them, it’s very nice here in the summer, but boy can I see where that nickname came from. The Chicagoans are “FIPs,” which just means “Fucking Illinois People.”

Most who live in Massachussetts
—what with our beautiful National Seashore on the Cape
the Berkshires with its perfect little villages
and cultural icons—Jacob’s Pillow, Tanglewood,
plus the great restaurants in places such as Boston
(not to mention our Celtics, Bruins, Sox, and Patriots)
would consider any relocation to New Hampshire
not so much as move but as some cruel banishment; however, we don’t mind our Neanderthal cousins calling us
Massholes. Indeed, we are thrilled that any on of them has a two syllable word in his or her vocabulary.

If they legalized the thing, the issues would go away and many a person
would feel wholesome. Serial killers go after prostitutes for a few specific reasons and one is that they are easy prey that will not be readily missed—and another is that the killer feels he is “ridding society” of something that is perceived as bad. This will all be in my next book which will be on crime.
Pray for Nick Charles
I agree
Legalisation is often the least bad solution.
(stole that line from an editorial in the Economist, it is easily one of my favourites.)

Funny, in Rhode Island they just made
indoor prostitution (massage parlors as often as not) illegal.
Many years with few if any problems. There are moral issues (not the sex) of course, but that seemed to have little to do with the change.

In Copenhagen they have a Prostitution Union
Well represented and crime free sex industry, better than women being exploited, surely?

There are still arguments about
what = being exploited, DC.
And drugs and wrecked lives seem to follow.

Let it not be forgotten though
Johnson wouldn’t defend against other ‘colored’ fighters either. I’m sure it was mostly a money thing, but it’s not like there weren’t a whole slew of other qualified challengers who he could have faced and who he fought before winning the title (e.g. Joe Jeanette, Harry Wills, Sam Langford, Sam McVea, etc.)
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
He did defend against one "colored" fighter, it should be noted.
Battling Jim Johnston, in Paris. Johnston broke a bone in his arm and fought to a sluggish draw, apparently.
Johnson always claimed that if the black fighters that you mentioned were able to meet his $30,000 appearance fee, he would fight them. Unfortunately none could, and fights against Jeffries, Stanley Ketchel, Fireman Jim Flynn, and Jess Willard were far more lucrative.
Johnson actually agreed to fight Langford in Austraila when Hugh McIntosh promised him a huge sum, but McIntosh pulled the offer once Johnson’s legal troubles began to mount.
