Mandatory Eight Count: Fireworks on Independence Day
Huge UK card for September | FrankWarren.tv
U.K. promoter Warren seems to be putting all of his eggs in one basket here, but on September 18, at LG Arena in Birmingham, he will be staging a card that includes Matthew Macklin vs. Darren Barker, Derek Chisora vs. Sam Sexton, Kell Brook vs. Michael Jennings, Nathan Cleverly against Karo Murat for an interim light heavyweight title, Enzo Maccaranelli likely against Alexander Frenkel in a defense of his European title and prospects James DeGale and Frankie Gavin. This is a loaded card, although expect some of this to get dropped before the actual fight night. The Macklin, Brook and Chisora fights are all about as good as it gets at the UK domestic level, but Brook-Jennings has been canceled at least three times before and Macklin-Barker has also fallen through more than once before. In related news, Cleverly has obtained his university degree and now will be focusing on boxing full time.
Canada's Molitor postpones title fight | CBC
Steve Molitor will have to wait a few more months before stepping in the ring with England's Jason Booth for a vacant title. The two were to fight later in July, but Molitor suffered a stress fracture in his leg while training. If he recovers, the fight is tentatively being rescheduled for mid-September.
Great White Hope - Not Great, Little Hope Against Johnson | NYTimes.com
A century has passed since James J. Jeffries, the Great White Hope, fought Jack Johnson for the heavyweight title. A particularly well-written profile by a Johnson biographer. In related news, Senator John McCain has continued to push for a presidential pardon of Johnson's conviction for taking a white woman across state lines.

Kim To Tangle With Vazquez In Texas | The Sweet Science
Ji Hoon Kim, the Korean whirlwind lightweight, will face off with Miguel Vazquez for the IBF title, with the fight being aired on Fox Sports Net on August 14 from Laredo, Texas. Vazquez and Kim have had similar career arcs - both lost a number of fights early in their careers, but have come on with winning streaks lately. Sparring partner (and now manager) Antonio Margarito hooked Vazquez up with some more serious training, and he recently beat Breidis Prescott to earn this shot. Hekkie Budler, South African flyweight prospect (and IBO titlist), will be featured on the undercard.
Hope died 100 years ago | Boston Herald
Another piece on Johnson-Jeffries, this one drawing some interesting parallels with Oscar Bonaneva, who is a subject of Joe Pesci's latest flick, Love Ranch.
Gatti's family still searching for the truth behind his death in Brazil | New York Daily News
Just because it's out of the press, it doesn't mean that this isn't still ongoing. If nothing else, Gatti's family wants to prove that Gatti didn't commit suicide, for the honor of his family. Unfortunately, due to a botched investigation, the full truth will probably never be known, even if it was indeed a suicide.

That UK card sounds amazing!
Props to Cleverly for his Maths Degree, smart guy.

Vazquez's only losses were above lightweight...
maybe due to his early lack of “more serious training”? – Saul Avarez twice and Tim Bradley once. Excellent TR Live card. Miguel Angel Garcia vs. Cornelius Lock ain’t so bad either. If Budler fights someone near his own level (which he has before), so much the better. Nice addition to Dawson-Pascal the same night on HBO. Now if only we could see Moreno-Cermeno II from Panama. Where’s that satellite boxing network we’ve been waiting for?
There's a lot of factors that might be in Vazquez's favor
- Wasn’t a full-time boxer until recently
- Had been fighting above his best weight
- Has learned a lot from sparring with guys like Margarito
- His losses all came to fighters who turned out to be really good
As for Moreno-Cermeno II, if it’s on TV Max 9 in Panama, they run a free live webfeed of all of the fights they air. I don’t think they aired the first one, but here’s to hoping they pick up the rematch.

They have a tiered pricing system
where it costs more in larger fight markets. I was in NY for the Mayweather-Mosley fight and it cost $25 for a fight that was $20 in other markets. I think the fight will have more traction in LA than other areas.
Re JJ
I have always questioned Senator John McCain’s motives here. He has used this issue for years and perhaps has milked it dry politically speaking, but at leats he has been one of the few who has been vocal.. But where is the BWAA? Hauser, Borges, Kimball, etc? Where is HBO? Where is the ACLU? Where is the Hall of Fame? Where are other related-institutions? This entire thing was steepped in racial bullshite and should be eradicated. Why the delay, why?

McCain is in the best position to influence things
I suspect it will happen eventually, but pardons usually sit on the desk of the president until after the next election cycle ends. There’s usually a controversial one or two thrown in there, and if there is, it’s good to have a few no-brainers (like this one) signed at the same time to limit the backlash from those.

McCain's political days may well be numbered and he won't be in a postion to influence
anything but the amount of spice they put in his Bloody Mary’s on his ranch in Sedona.

Quite possibly
I can’t imagine that he won’t get pardoned by this administration eventually though.
There have been plenty of writers pushing for it, but the BWAA hasn’t taken an official stance on it that I know of.

the BWAA is too poltically correct to take a stand on anything. It is bile-inducing.
Now you know why I use an alias-heh heh.
