Open Thread: Friday Night Fights and Shobox
Couple of decent cards on American TV tonight.
On ESPN2's Friday Night Fights, Hank Lundy (18-0-1, 10 KO) will battle John Molina (20-1, 16 KO) in what could be an all-action slugfest. Neither guy is afraid to mix it up. Lundy had an entertaining bout last time out on ESPN2 with Tyrese Hendrix in April, and Molina has won a couple since losing his first pro fight to Martin Honorio.
Shobox features big welterweight Mike Jones (21-0, 17 KO) against Irving Garcia (17-4-3, 8 KO) in the main event. Garcia hasn't fought since May 2009, when he lost a KO-4 in a knock-down, drag-out brawl with Luis Abregu. In the co-feature, loud welter Antwone Smith (18-1-1, 10 KO) looks to keep winning when he takes on Lanardo Tyner (23-3, 14 KO). Tyner is a capable guy whose losses have come to Saul Alvarez, Lamont Peterson and Mike Arnaoutis.
Also tonight, on Telefutura, Erislandy Lara (11-0, 6 KO) is in action.

The whole northeast has been killer
But at least there’s air conditioning. Was about the same temperature when I was in Cambodia a couple months back, but no A/C there makes it unbearable sometimes.

Most of the fights Judah had on ESPN2 were from very early in his career (and I don’t think anybody wants to relive the Ruben Galven fight).

McReedy is Irish, so of course they love him in New England

Yeah
But McReedy landed a few solid shots. Not sure if that was like a warming up round, but Biosse isn’t blowing me out of the water.

Hey guys, haven't been here in a long time. Figured the boxing was pretty good on FNF tonight.
Two things…
1.) The SSR family is pulling the plug on HBO so it looks like streams for me. I hardly watch HBO outside of boxing so no big loss.
2.) I’ve decided to take my commenting talents to South Beach and sign with the Miami Heat….

R1 10-9 Tyner
Tyner looked…well, kinda good that round.

10-9 Tyner
But a close round. Smith landed a few good body shots, but Tyner controlled with the jab.

and Tyner is taking advantage

R3 10-9 Smith, 29-28 Tyner
Smith with good body work, just grinding in that round. Tyner still plenty game, though.
by The Boxer Rebellion on Jul 9, 2010 11:21 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
29-28 Smith
More active, more accurate, more big punches, but Tyner is landing his fair share still as well, especially that right to the body.

"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
This has been a really solid phonebooth fight
Both guys up close, trading back and forth, and I don’t think there’s been a clinch yet.

R4 10-9 Tyner, 39-37 Tyner

How's the Lundy fight going?
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Lundy is just peppering Molina all night
Molina landed a nice left hook and Lundy had a flurry at the end of the 5th, but it hasn’ t been as spirited as I was expecting so far
by sillycaboose on Jul 9, 2010 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions
This fight is going to a decision
Both have stellar chins, and neither has jaw-breaking power.
50-45 Lundy
Molina winced on a couple of body shots. It’s not boring but Lundy is clearly winning the fight. Molina has no defense for the jab and is relying too much on the right hand.
The Dos Equis guy wishes he was Brock Lesnar.
R5 10-9 Smith, 48-47 Tyner
Much better for Smith…better movement and cleaner punching.
by The Boxer Rebellion on Jul 9, 2010 11:29 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
48-47 Smith
Not a dominant round, but a clear win. When he stepped outside, he dominated.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Lundu is just too quick for Molina, who also shows minimal head movement.

R7 10-9 Smith, 67-66 Tyner
As the commentators noted, Tyner seemed to take that one mostly off, but did come on late.
by The Boxer Rebellion on Jul 9, 2010 11:37 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
67-66
Tyner round. Much more active, seems to have more left in the tank than Smith.

Lundy got cocky and ran right into Molina's favorite punch.
He doesn’t seem too hurt though.

Lundy gets out of the round.
His hands were down. His left hand was weak and the right was waist-level and Molina capitalized.
John will need more of that.

Lundy was acting weird throughout the fight
but it really started to pick up after that sweet KD, perhaps he was trying to disguise how hurt he was? I don’t know.
Lundy needs to be less cocky
