Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Cristobal Arreola v. Manuel Quezada
Note at 9:10pm EDT: ESPN2 went to "bonus coverage" of a Roger Federer tennis match in Toronto before 9pm, after their scheduled women's tennis programming had ended on time. At 9pm, they stayed with the tennis match. Friday Night Fights will air whenever the tennis ends. It is, as of now, 4-1 in the third set.
Tonight at 9pm EDT, ESPN2's Friday Night Fights goes live from Ontario, California, with popular heavyweight Cristobal Arreola in what has become his "home arena" facing Goossen Tutor stablemate Manuel Quezada in the main event.
It's often unclear what will be on the ESPN undercards, but also on the bill tonight at Citizens Bank Arena will be a junior welterweight bout between Josesito Lopez (26-3, 15 KO) and Marvin Cordova Jr. (21-1-1, 11 KO), which I hope airs. But it's possible we'll see 2008 Olympian Shawn Estrada (7-0, 7 KO) continuing to take it easy against Alex Armenta (7-1, 6 KO) in a fight that isn't what it looks like on paper. Armenta, 31, hasn't fought since 2001, when he was knocked out in 1:47 against Jerson Ravelo.

But Dzinziruk-Collazo isn’t happening. The public story is that Collazo hasn’t fought in a year and wants a warm up first. I’ve heard though that the real reason is because Collazo’s contract with Don King expires at the end of the year, and he just wants to let it lapse so he can sign with someone else.

"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
When I get around to writing the Don King business model article
One thing King tends to do is hold his fighters hostage near the end of their contracts. He’ll make them a good fight, but he’ll only make it if they’ll agree to extend their promotional deals. So it’s perfectly understandable that Collazo isn’t fighting, although I almost wish he would just get in the ring. Dude isn’t getting any younger.

I know this is like touching the 'third rail' when discussing boxing but
there are often valid reasons why promoters do some of the things that they do. When you invest in talent, cultivate and nurture it, and promote it carefully and deliberately….you would hope that investment pays dividends. Boxers are talent…but they are not financially viable without the long term backing (investment) of promoters.
Yes, I know it’s a very dirty game…and that boxer’s have been historically and continue to be exploited, often egregiously. But for every star that pays off in a promoter’s stable, there are many more that don’t. Moreover, for every grateful and appreciative fighter who sticks with his promoter, there are far more that think it is they alone that have created their stardom. No one is crying here for promoter’s losses … because that is the business that they have chosen; Managing and promoting talent.
But ask anyone from CAA to IMG in Hollywood to the smallest talent agency, and they will all have tales of how, no matter what you do for a client, whether it be an actor, singer, boxer, they all leave when they want to; usually dismissive of all that has been done on their behalf.
Yeah I can’t blame Luis. I hope Dzinziruk fights again on that show, though. In theory DiBella already has Berto on that card, so what about Cintron?

Will Arreola be crying tonight?
I’ll bet three orders of chicken quesadillas against one large chimichanga that arreola beats quizada….

No. First or second round waxing. Chris can fight. Make no mistake about that notwithsatnding his

Lopez is swinging big right away. Goodness. Lopez with a nice body shot. He’s throwing a ton and Cordova looks a little overwhelmed early. Cordova comes in with a decent combo, but a bit jerky and doesn’t land.
That’s the other thing about that tennis crap: These guys, professional fighters, had to wait an hour to go on. Their job was affected by ESPN2 decided to stick with coverage of something that wasn’t even scheduled to air.

Cordova-Lopez R3

Lopez is throwing some shots that are just absurdly wild. I think that might even be halfway effective as a tactic here, because then he lands some good, compact shots in close. Cordova really is just…I don’t know. He’s getting lulled into letting Lopez do round-winning work. But Cordova starts doing some nice work int he last minute of the round, too. Round was slower until the final minute when Cordova started opening up more, and they end it throwing nasty punches again. Close round.

Yeah it’s not to do with being American. Most of hte fighters are boring. The best drawing heavyweight in the United States is Tomasz Adamek, in part because of location, and in part because his fights don’t suck.

Low blow from Cordova as Lopez is pressuring and pressuring. Looked borderline. Cordova with a good uppercut that Lopez feels, but he stays in the pocket. Now Cordova starting to wake up some more. Lopez just going and going and going. Now he starts ripping on Cordova! Cordova feeling the pressure and the piling up of punches now. Cordova getting cracked to the body and the head, turtling more but even when he does not covering up effectively. Straight right pops him down the pipe. First half of this round is all Josesito Lopez. Even Cordova’s punches are immediately answered. Cordova comes back a little bit late, but again Lopez just starts firing away in the final moments.

Cordova-Lopez R6

Sounds like Teddy gave Cordova the last round. Yes he did. So he has it 48-47 for Lopez. I thought the last round was clearly Lopez’s though Cordova did some OK work, which they showed on replay.
Cordova’s nose bleeding. He looks a bit worse for wear overall, just in his attitude and posture. Lopez not pressuring as much early this round, and Cordova comes in with some combination punching. Lopez with a shot behind the head, light warning. Now Lopez with a right hand! Cordova stuck in the corner and turtling. There’s another right from Lopez. Lopez laying on him and smothering him, and Cordova spins out of it and gets back to the center of the ring. Shot on the break now. This fight’s a little chippy.
Rights from both. Cordova with a combo, Lopez comes back with effective body shots, but Cordova rips Lopez with a body shot of his own! That hurt Lopez, but Lopez hangs on through the end of the round. Woof, that was a good shot. Too bad he didn’t get it earlier.

Cordova would be wise to target that same shot again. Lopez looked like he was about to crumble there. Lopez slips with about two minutes left in the round. Cordova comes to jump right on him. He thinks he’s got him reeling. Cordvoa now the aggressor, looking to tag the body. Cordova has totally turned this fight around right now. But here comes Lopez with big shots! Cordova’s mouthpiece goes flying!
Damn, I wish this was 10 rounds. This fight is really getting tight and it’s almost over.
Cordova pressing again in the final 20 seconds. Cordova has some God awful defense and there is no getting around it. Lopez with a couple shots, Cordova fires back, and they end another round throwing.

Cordova with a huge low blow. That really did look low on first glance. Lopez will get time to recover. Russell sure waited a while to call it low though.
Oh Jesus, they deducted a point from Cordova. That was not intentional. I think that’s an awful and unfortunate call. Now they’re both going to tear away for the final half of the round.

Arreola’s at 82 with Quezada at 70. It’s just there’s nothing on most of that stuff and they’re not landing hard, clean shots.

I have trouble giving Quezada any credit for his pitty-patty efforts.

Some fights test the endurance of the man.
Others, the endurance of the fan.

Quezada was standing straight up, sorta throwing punches with no conviction.
That is the moment I will remember of this fight, if any.
Its almost like his punches are defense. He hopes they get in the way of Arreola’s punches

Arreola-Quezada R7

Apparently Arreola has blood in his mouth. God why is this 12 rounds? WHY? Quezada has absolutely nothing in there and Arreola looks…weak? His punches just don’t seem to have much of anything on them tonight. Quezada is throwing some of the worst goddamn punches I have seen all year. He’s active but he really might as well just be literally touching Arreola. Quezada seriously looks like he barely cares at all. I don’t even know how to describe this fight if you’re not seeing it. Arreola looks determined but tired already, Quezada looks indifferent.

Arreola-Quezada R8

I wish Quezada would just unleash something huge. No matter how bad it looks, how against his training it goes, how stupid it might be, I just want him to throw one punch where it looks like he’s really trying to turn the tide of this fight. But he’s not. He’s laying out this alleged jab and ugh. So now I wish Teddy would talk about cake or something.

I’d expect Arreola to fight Tony Thompson next, but I don’t think Goossen would be thrilled to sacrifice Arreola to an unmarketable guy nearing 40 who’s already lost to Wlad Klitschko, even if they’re both his fighters.

Arreola-Quezada R9

Suddenly they both throw punches that don’t look like crap. And moments later, Arreola lays it on thick and Quezada goes down. This will continue, but hopefully Arreola closes the show here. He should be able to. Quezada trying but getting hammered and DOWN AGAIN!
Quezada up again. Why continue? Arreola is a good finisher, especially against mid-level competition. But hey — Quezada is showing willingness to fight. This round might actually end. And it does with Quezada covering up and reeling.
Arreola 10-7
Arreola 90-79
They should consider stopping this. Quezada has zero hope of winning this fight.

Arreola-Quezada R10

Well, Quezada’s throwing punches to start the round. He doesn’t lack for brass. Quezada doesn’t look wobbly and he’s landing a little. What the hell is Arreola doing? Oh, hell — Arreola might have hurt his right hand again, as he just backed down and shook the hand.
Arreola trying to bounce on the outside. Quezada throwing. Arreola really not throwing back. He must have hurt his hand. Quezada is actually trying to find somewhere to land a big shot now. Arreola is basically just showing the right hand at this point.

Arreola-Quezada R11

Wow, Arreola’s doing nothing again this round. I mean this isn’t gas tank stuff. And yep, Arreola’s hand is hurt again, Tessitore reports from the corner between rounds after we get Teddy Atlas’ in-depth thoughts on Cloud-Johnson for some reason. FWIW, I do think Teddy might be right about Glen’s weight. He’s talked about going to cruiserweight recently and there might be a lot to that.
Quezada is…dominating this round. Sadly he’s way, way behind and needs a stoppage. Then Manuel gets hit with a left hook that seems to shake him a bit. Arreola throws big to end the round.

Arreola has gone to one decision, ever.
A UD in 2005. Other than that, two DQs account for his non-KOs. His hand might be hurt, but this is a bad sign of decline.
Sorry, I meant to say, he’s won 1 decision. Adamek took the MD that should have been a UD, of course.

Arreola-Quezada R12

So this is two straight fights Arreola has hurt his hand. That’s never a good thing.
Quezada lands a big shot! Boy, if he had more power, or if he’d done any damage in the first nine rounds, this might be a fight. But I don’t think he can do enough to really bother Arreola. I mean this thing’s in the bank already. And Arreola, to his credit, is standing there and trying to fight with one hand, basically. He’s hugging a bit, but not awful.
All in all I guess this wound up being not so terrible. Not good, but mostly just forgettable. Both guys had spirit. Arreola just FIRING SHOTS DOWN THE STRETCH! He wants the stoppage! And Quezada goes down again!
Well goddamn, but I am a Chris Arreola fan. I mean hell. Gutsy guy. (Pardon the pun.)
Quezada just wants to last the last 10 seconds. Arreola is winging shots! Quezada throwing back. Wound up a fun final four rounds! Once you took a hand away from Arreola, this became a blast!
Arreola 10-8
Arreola 118-107

It really wasn’t THAT awful. The last third of the fight was perfectly watchable and frankly better than any Klitschko fight (either of them) since Wladimir-Brock.

That’s a tricky comparison, because when you watch a Klitschko fight, you watch a superior guy control and defeat an inferior guy, fully. There’s a slight pleasure in watching the mastery. Watching a guy with not enough power to beat the guy who has not enough conditioning to really fight the sort of fight you want to watch? Well, now that’s true tedium. So I never thought I’d say this, but this made me appreciate Klitschko fights.

I disagree. I greatly disagree. There is nothing enjoyable about what Vitali Klitschko does, and Wladimir is a guy who could put his opponents away within five every time out if he took even the slightest risks. They are incredibly boring. They are definitely good fighters, and they actually stay in shape and care about their careers, which I like, and I don’t blame them for being better than everyone, but I do not enjoy watching either of them.

No doubt.
And I totally won’t defend them. The key word here really is slight, in my slight enjoyment. I guess to put it in simple bullshit math:
Skill + Opponent with no real chance of victory = At least a chance to see skill
Muddied skill + Opponent with no real chance of victory = No real reason to see
But I understand that you remain a Arreola fan, whereas he lost me somewhere around the Walker fight, entertaining as it was. (I mainly just realized then that he was never really going to grow beyond entertainment.) The division will still all but definitely be more entertaining when the Klitschkos are gone. But for all we know, three Chris Byrds could be right behind them.
by El Destruyo on Aug 14, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions
I like Arreola, but I don’t, like, get excited about him anymore. Watching Vitali dismantle him played a part in that, and then when he so totally blew off training for Minto and then by his own admission for Adamek, that left me a little cold. I like watching him when he turns it up. When he doesn’t, he’s as ugly a fighter as there is in the division.
My favorite heavyweight at this point is Adamek, and I even have some issues with him, mostly being that his heavyweight career has been four fights counting the upcoming bout, and two of them were against Andrew Golota and Michael Grant, neither of whom have been relevant in a decade.
