Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Jean Pascal v. Chad Dawson

It's a one-fight night tonight on HBO World Championship Boxing, but it's a significant bout. The vacant Ring Magazine light heavyweight world championship is on the line at the always-rabid Bell Centre in Montreal, as Jean Pascal takes on undefeated Chad Dawson. The show will start at 10:30pm EDT, and Bad Left Hook will be here with round-by-round updates and commentary. Join us to crown a new world champion, as we continue to ignore Zsolt Erdei's legitimate claim to being the real world champion at 175.

Should be a historic night tonight

I’m picking Bad Chad to win by a kinda wide, convincing UD but if the fight is closer than what i’m thinking is going to be,a question pops up:Can Dawson win a close decision in Canada? we will find out.

There’s one Canadian judge (Jack Woodburn), one from Oklahoma (Gerald Ritter), and one from the UK (John Keane). He should get a fair shake, and Montreal has a pretty good reputation for fair judging, too.

The Canadian guy has done a whole bunch of both of their fights before

He scored Dawson-Johnson I 116-112 for Dawson, FWIW.

At a certain point, isn’t it Erdei’s (and his management’s) fault that he’s being ignored? He’s content to fight a bunch of stiffs, journeymen, and European-level fighters in Europe, never challenging any of the top fighters in the division (or even anyone in the top 30, if you go by Boxrec’s rankings.)

And how the heck did he end up as the legit LHW champ anyway?

by Verklemptomaniac on Aug 14, 2010 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

Erdei beat Gonzalez who beat Michalczewski who beat Hill who beat Maske

Erdei has finally split with Universum; let’s see if that means he finally steps up and faces some decent fighters. He hasn’t faced a LHW worth his salt since Ulrich.

And he does have a few decent wins

Ulrich, Garay (x2), Fragomeni, Sadhounne and Gonzalez are all decent wins, just none of them are particularly great, and a lot of people thought Garay beat him both times.

To be fair, he didn’t really know he was leaving the division. That’s why he weighed 177 for a cruiserweight fight.

Surgery super fixes that problem. Essentially the ligament acts as a seatbelt for keeping the shoulder in the socket has torn off or is simply torn. This is why the shoulder will slip out all the time, because there is nothing holding it in. Surgery essentially puts that ligament back.

Pascal-Dawson R1

Dawson has a Condom Depot ad on his ass.

Dawson flicking the jab and going to the body. Pascal with a right to the body and a sweeping left upstairs. Pascal looks like he wants to shoot under Dawson’s jab and unload combos. Dawson really isn’t using his jab all that much. Pascal charges with a right hand! Crowd is very hot. Pascal warned for an elbow. Dawson with hard shots, blocked by Pascal. Dawson with a sharp jab, but backed down when Pascal fires away. Pascal is ALL energy and lands another big right. His speed is bothering Dawson some.

Dawson with a jab. He’s going to need to throw more, period. Especially if Pascal is going to be so explosive when HE throws. Pascal with two jabs, a hard right inside, and Dawson gets caught out of where he wants to be. Dawson is ceding a lot of ground to Pascal early. Dawson with a good shot. He’s having trouble finding effective range. Pascal with a charge and a body blow, but it appeared blocked (camera angle was Dawson’s back). Dawson coming back with offense now. But Chad lands little if anything. Right hand and a left from Pascal. Both throw jabs, Pascal’s lands. Pascal with another jab and a flurry. Dawson is being outfought by Jean Pascal these first two rounds. Pascal is keeping him tense and nervous.

Lederman gave the second to Dawson. Probably his jab.

Pascal continuing to charge aggressively. Dawson is doing nothing offensively. There’s a good jab right when I say that. Lederman talks up the Dawson jab. Pascal with lightning shots to the body! Pascal’s aggressiveness and willingness to let it go is really owning the pace of this fight. Good left by Dawson, but he backs off and Pascal charges right back. Dawson is just having so much trouble with the charges. Dawson with a flurry, but Pascal makes him miss badly after that. First half of the round is controlled by Dawson, though, as Pascal is just staying way back. There’s a charge, but Dawson gets the guard up. That one was telegraphed. Pascal is now the one giving some ground. His charges are less effective, Dawson is calming down and getting his focus. Good right by Pascal, and NOW THEY WAR! Good charge at the end for Pascal, but Dawson round.

Tough round to score that you’ve got to be figuring is going to Pascal. I liked Chad though.

48-47 Pascal.

The real story is this though: Chad Dawson absolutely needs to be set to punch. He cannot improvise. If he’s set, he can throw a beautiful combination. But if he’s not, he flails and doesn’t really punch. Pascal is always good to go no matter how he’s set. That is giving Chad nightmares.

Pascal-Dawson R7

Good right by Pascal just over a minute into the round! Dawson is hurt and trying to get away! He manages to tie up, but Pascal wants to bring it to him. Pascal REALLY charging! Dawson’s knee buckles, but he’s coming back. Still not throwing anything. Dawson strays low, but the referee doesn’t stop the action, just warns. Here comes Dawson, and he’s warned again for another low blow that didn’t seem too low.

Boy this is really picking up. Pascal moving on the outside again. Honestly he doesn’t seem like he wants to trade with Dawson at all. He likes when he can catch Chad off-guard, but he doesn’t like exchanging shots. Dawson charges again after another borderline low shot. Pascal with a right, Dawson firing, and the round ends.

Dawson’s corner thinks Pascal is gassing out. Dawson starting to make Pascal miss on those charges more obviously than before and the pace is slowing. But there’s a good right to the body by Pascal, and Dawson springs back with a jab that lands. Dawson digs to the body, BUT PASCAL RIPS DAWSON WITH A RIGHT HAND!!!!!! Dawson was hurt there! Pascal coming at him! Dawson is DESPERATELY hanging on. Dawson’s legs still aren’t really there, but he’s trying to tie up Pascal with all he can grab. Now he’s leaning on him in the corner. Dawson hit with another right. He’s really hurting. Now he’s on his bike with his arms down.

Borderline low shot from Pascal, but no warning and Dawson doesn’t really complain. Pascal with another rush and he goes to the body. Chad closes in with a left hand, but lets Pascal get away again. Pascal winds up pushing Dawson down by accident. Half of a hip check, really. Pascal charging more. He’s totally dominating this round. Dawson is really not doing much. BIG CHARGE BY DAWSON! JUST TEARING AT PASCAL! But Pascal blocks enough, and gets away. Dawson is coming out with a lot of energy. He clearly thinks he needs the KO. Pascal is withering and Dawson is firing and firing away. Pascal is getting battered in the first minute of this round!

Now he gets some space, but Dawson is really coming at him this round. And now he lets Pascal breathe. WHY? Pascal IS tired in there. He’s going on guts and reserve energy and his little rests that Dawson is giving him. BEAUTIFUL UPPERCUT COUNTER BY DAWSON STUNS PASCAL! And then Dawson just STANDS THERE. Big right Pascal! Dawson nails him back!

Headbutt BADLY cuts Dawson. FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! Right on the eyelid. Oh jesus. There’s no way that’s going to continue.

Agreed.

The big question is who do you put there? Do you bring up Kellerman or go look for someone else?

by Waldo Rastel on Aug 15, 2010 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

If you believe in keeping Kellerman, you have to bring him in, possibly using the BAD position to bring in a new three-man second team.

by El Destruyo on Aug 15, 2010 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly I think Emanuel Steward is already better at the job Larry is supposed to be doing. A Lampley/Max/Steward team would be a nice step in the right direction. But frankly, and I’ve said this before this year, HBO needs to give serious thought to overhauling their commentary teams. Bob Papa is fine for B.A.D., and I like Max Kellerman when he’s being himself instead of playing a character. I like Steward because though he lacks eloquence sometimes, he’s often the one it seems is actually paying attention to the fight, and it’s because he really loves boxing and is still tuned in to the sport, as is Kellerman. As a viewer, it seems to me that Lampley has lost some of his passion for the sport. I think Merchant secretly detests boxing these days — I’m sure he’d say he doesn’t, and yes, he does seem to enjoy talking about fights from 1958, but he’s almost never interested in what’s going on in the fight he’s calling.

The with replacing Lampley is finding the right PBP guy. Steve Albert could do it, but as far as I know he’s still under contract to Showtime (and God do we all want him back where he belongs). I don’t think Papa is the right replacement. Barry Tompkins isn’t as good as he used to be. And we’ve seen what happens when you bring a guy whose interest in boxing isn’t great into a major PBP role over at Showtime.

This is going to be a big problem at some point. Merchant isn’t far off from retirement one way or the other, and Lampley isn’t getting any younger either at 61. But who replaces these guys?

And personally I wish they’d bring Roy Jones back full-time as a color commentator. It was great seeing him for Cotto-Foreman and I felt he really added to the broadcast. Roy’s Roy. He loves to talk and he stays interested in the fights, and he’s honest.

by Scott Christ on Aug 15, 2010 3:52 AM EDT up reply actions

So I was thinking about this and it reminded me of this small boxing broadcast I saw not too long ago. The fights were nothing of note but the commentary and especially the color was very decent. Very Italian and very Jersey, but the analysis was spot on. Then they pan over to the commentators and Paulie is the color guy. After thinking for a ten seconds it made perfect sense. Paulie, obviously, has a love and knowledge for boxing along with the ability to talk for a good period of time. When he retirees he should really look into being a color/3rd member of the HBO or any other boxing commentary team.
