Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Who's the next Mexican star?

On September 18 you will see rising Mexican star Saul Alvarez fight on the under card of Shane Mosley Sergio Mora

bout, which will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. He will be fighting veteran and former title holder Carlos

Baldomir, In front of thousands of screaming Mexican fans! Which asks the question can Saul Alvarez live to the

hype? Can he be as great as a Marco Antonio Barrera or even a Julio Cesar Chavez? We will have to see to find out.

And if he does not live up to the hype who will be the next great Mexican star the boxing world  has been waiting for?

Can it be Abner Mares, Juan Carlos Burgos, or even Julio Cesar Chavez Jr?

Mares is really Mexican-American though. Is that OK?

I don't think so

He fought for Mexico in the Olympics

That doesn’t really matter though. He’s legally a Mexican citizen so he was able to fight for the Mexican team (which is easier to make than the USA team), but he is a de facto Mexican-American because he spent the vast majority of his childhood in the United States. Similarly, Andre Berto fought for the Haitian olympic team, but he is de facto an American as well.

Berto is a dual citizen and Mares may or may not be, but even if he isn’t, I’m sure he must have a green card by now. Either way, there are a great many immigrant kids in this country who don’t have citizenship but are really culturally American.

Heck, Becky Hammon represented Russia in the Olympics and she’s from South Dakota. Obviously, that’s a very different example than Mares’ and every individual set of circumstances is unique, but the point is that who you represent in the Olympics only shows where you have legal citizenship, not where you’re really “from”.

I hear ya

You don’t even need citizenship really. IIRC, Mike Piazza competed for Italy in the Olympics, and he’s third generation Italian.

Looks a little bit like “E” from Entourage.

God, I wish he would take that nickname.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good marketing ploy.

Irish Saul

I believe I read that a maternal grandparent or great grandparent was Irish. Has to be.

Ennis

More people are part Irish than know it, think Ali, partly of Ennis, Ireland, descent.

I don’t think he’s on the level of Alvarez or anything, but one guy I want to see get the right development and training is Michael Medina. He’s incredibly raw but has some natural talent, a lot of grit, and he can punch. Hook him up with a good trainer and I think he could turn out to be something.

Yea

I think Medina is good talent I mean his only losses are to Vanes Martirosyan, who is a title contender, and his other loss was to John Duddy which at the day of the weigh in came in 5 lbs. under weight at a weight that is not his, so i agree with you, he just needs a good trainer and he could be a title contender

Canelo is the obvious answer

But someone I hope can rack up a few wins and at least build up a big fan base in Mexico and maybe get a few US TV appearances is Topo Rosas. Dude is just pure excitement, bad hair and all.

We’ll see how Juan Carlos Burgos turns out too.

Angulo !!!

Angulo is knocking on the door of stardom as we speak !!! A matchup against the winner of the Matinez vs Williams rematch is all he needs !!! A big name like Margarito would push him to the top of the heap as well !!!

It's not a matter of "IF" the North will break you. It's a matter of "WHEN" the North will break you.For up here every year counts as two on the outside.

IS

a good one. He now resides in Coachella, California, but is basically Mexican, grew up there I think. Best thing on the card when Dawson fought Johnson, saved the night.

MARES

was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
so technically he was born there so i think it counts

by hispanic causing panic on Aug 15, 2010 6:47 PM EDT reply actions

Born there, but grew up in Hawaiian Gardens, California. He’s like the opposite of Margarito, who was born in Torrance, California but grew up in Mexico.

I think the most important thing is where you spend your teenage years, since those are your formative years. But it’s definitely a blurry line.

by taco pal on Aug 15, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

but it seems like Mares embraces the Mexican flag more than he does the American flag

Cain Velasquez

Too bad he fights for the UFC.

 I think he’s American anyway.

Mexican-American. I believe he grew up in Phoenix.

Away from Alvarez and Angulo, James De La Rosa is a wildcard who's on and off...

but he hasn’t fought anyone who doesn’t fit the tomato can bill… Let’s see him step-up…
