Marco Huck looking to secure cruiserweight Super Six spot against Godfrey

Marco Huck faces Matt Godfrey this Saturday in Germany.

Since a 2007 loss to Steve Cunningham, 25-year-old Marco Huck has done nothing but win, capturing the European cruiserweight title and following that up with the WBO belt. On Saturday, he looks to keep winning, with a few special wrinkles added in.

For one, it's the 100th broadcast of a Sauerland Event boxing show on German network ARD. But more importantly, a win for Huck (29-1, 22 KO) would secure a spot for him in a proposed cruiserweight Super Six tournament being setup by his promoters.

"There is a lot at stake this time out," said Huck. But he claims he's not looking past his opponent, American Matt Godfrey. "[The tournament] has crossed my mind because such an idea would be a great thing for the exciting cruiserweight division but right now all my focus is on Matt Godfrey. I will knock him out."

Godfrey (20-1, 10 KO) has won four straight, but hasn't fought in almost a year. The last win was a split decision over Michael Simms in Sacramento, which was Godfrey's first fight on the west coast.

In two bouts this year, Huck has knocked off Americans Adam "Swamp Donkey" Richards and Brian Minto, both marginal heavyweights coming down for a money fight and shot at a major title. He knocked out Richards in the third round, and dominated Minto for nine rounds, after which Minto retired in his corner. Godfrey says he brings a stiffer challenge than they did.

"I am here to win this fight," Godfrey says. "I want to thank Team Sauerland for giving me the chance to come over and take the title. They have picked the wrong opponent. I am no Brian Minto or Adam Richards - Huck has never been in the ring with someone like me and I will be doing things he has never seen before. I will bring home the title."

Jimmy Burchfield, Godfrey's promoter, says that his fighter is ready. "Matt is coming off the best camp of his career. We had to send home five sparring partners, including two heavyweights, because he knocked them all out. We are ready and we will take the title on Saturday night."

Heck, he's probably in if he loses

He’s the most popular cruiserweight at the moment and he’s promoted by the guys putting together the event.

Yeah, but it’s a neat promotional tool for the fight. I can’t imagine Sauerland would find six cruisers that aren’t Huck.

I don’t really see much appeal in a cruiserweight Super 6 to be honest.
No real elite fighters in that div, imo.
