Bad Left Hook Special Coverage: Randy Couture v. James Toney at UFC 118

Tonight at 10pm EDT, Bad Left Hook will present special fight night coverage of the Randy Couture-James Toney fight at UFC 118, live on pay-per-view from the TD Garden in Boston.

Note: This is not where you want to be if you want in-depth, round-by-round coverage and scoring of tonight's full event. If that's what you're looking for, head over to our sister site, Bloody Elbow, where the entire card will be covered by some of the best analysts you're going to find anywhere. We're here for the boxing circle curious who are watching tonight's card and might want a familiar place (a "Cheers" of sorts) to discuss the event in real time. We will have live updates on the Couture-Toney fight, and live RESULTS updates in the comments of this post, but we won't be providing serious analysis of the majority of the show. We're not qualified.

If you're here to complain about MMA, don't.

If this doesn't interest you, we understand, and ask that you talk about one of the many boxing topics you can find elsewhere on the site. We are not in the business of MMA coverage, but James Toney's foray into the sport has many of us at least a little bit interested, and that's why this is here.

I think it be cool if you also covered the Davis/Diaz fight just to give your overage a “boxing” feel.

I just talked to someone who is going down to Boston to see the fight. I told him the thing could be over in less than

60 seconds. He said he “is going down there in a stretch limo with plenty of amber liquid and who cares?” He has a point.

It’s a good point indeed. The show should be fun anyway. Even if he’s not a big fan, it’s a unique experience and a great production.

I think I’m gonna head over to local pizza joint to watch my first live UFC card. They got me interested. Just hope I’m not disappointed.

The last card I watched, Lesnar’s most recent fight, was pretty fun.

Yeah

My, only vaguely educated, opinion says that he kicks ass.

The guys to watch tonight will be

Demian Maia once the fight is on the ground, as he’s a wizard on the mat. You’ll be spoiled by watching his transitions.

Kenny Florian for having some of the better striking in MMA and getting zero credit for it. He evolved from a ground fighter to a kickboxer to a boxer and is now becoming a bit of a wrestler on top of it. One of the best overall fighters in MMA today.

BJ Penn is a legend of the sport and has immense natural talent. If he’s motivated and in shape, he’ll be a treat to watch. Last time he fought Frankie Edgar was a bit of a stinker though.

The fight that you’re most likely to pan as a boxing fan is Marcus Davis vs. Nate Diaz. Davis has pro boxing experience but has faded a lot and was always a bit of a journeyman. Nate Diaz is middling, has a great ground game, but is often happy to brawl it out. He has a somewhat effective pitter-patter volume punching style that his brother is much better at. It will likely be a sloppy boxing match in 4 oz gloves until Diaz remembers he’s a technician on the ground and pulls off a submission.

The Toney fight is a farce IMO. It’s best left ignored.

I hope you guys enjoy the fights. I’d stay and chat but I’m heading out to a bar soon to catch the fights. I’m sure guys at Bloody Elbow will be kind and helpful for any questions you have.

BJ Penn

is probably my favourite all round MMA performer especially when,as you say,he is motivated and has no stamina issues.I think most boxing fans would enjoy watching him and Florian fight.
Some reckon Diaz v Davis could be FOTN and Couture v Toney is probably the least appealing fight on the card to me to be honest.

I mean

I’ve watched a decent amount of MMA before. Mostly WEC or Bellator because they end up airing reruns of those a lot of times late at night when I’m having trouble falling asleep, but it’s not completely foreign to me. I just know that (a) my girlfriend wouldn’t approve if I developed another expensive fight habit, (b) I was turned off by what I’ve watched in Japan and what’s been on those horrible mixed boxing/MMA cards, and © my girlfriend has a really visceral reaction against MMA, so I can’t really watch it while she’s around, whereas she’s learned to like boxing. Plus the wrestling part just doesn’t really excite me.

To be honest

Most of the WEC cards on vs turn out to be better than some UFC cards in terms of quality of fights. But the UFC is the big time and it has the star power. It’s way better to go to a bar and watch it, plus you save a ton of money.

I took me a while to start to like it Brick but that was probably because i was always comparing it to boxing but they are quite different sports.
Like with the subtle nuances and technical side of boxing, once i learnt more about the technical aspect of the ground game and what you they are trying to do,i started to appreciate it more.
If you listen to Joe Rogan explain what is happening it becomes much more interesting, imo.
I much prefer watching the kickboxers and Muay Thai guys in MMA than i would just watching straight up kickboxing/MT fights. That would bore me.

Fair enough, it's not a sport for everyone.

But if you’re going to watch it tonight, I just hope you give it a good shot with an open mind. 4 of the top 10 lightweights in the world are competing against each other on the card in Kenny Florian, BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar, and Gray Maynard. Demian Maia is still a top 5 middleweight and has amazing ground work that should be fascinating, even to new[ish] viewers. Japanese MMA is… an acquired taste. DREAM promotes very hit and miss fights although PRIDE used to be the greatest thing in the world, although I’m a fanboy.

I would love to hear your takeaway at the end of the night on the overall card.

The stomps and soccer kicks are a huge turnoff for lots of people, and I more than empathize with that

although I love them. Keeps wrestlers aware of what they are doing and prevents lazy shots from the outside for takedowns. But if I’m just getting somebody into MMA, I’m not going to show Wanderlei stomping guys heads in Japan. It looks so brutish.

I know what he means though.Once i get to know the sport more and how most of the fighters are good sportsmen and respectful of each other i saw it in a different light to how i used to think of it:as thugs just out to kill the other guy by any means possible! :)
Pride would look a bit brutal to new MMA fans, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Aug 28, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well... yeah. But it's also awesome and a big part of the game for some fighters.

Shogun’s stomps were a huge part of how he softened guys up for TKOs in PRIDE. It’s pretty amazing that he went from #1 in 2005 to #1 in 2010 in a totally different arena (octagon ruins ring footwork) and under different rules. When he knocked down Chuck Liddell you could see him turn his hips over for a kick and then step through instead of throwing it. Wanderlei did the same thing against Michael Bisping at the end of round 3, but even more pronounced. There was an art to it, and a reason why Chute Boxe (legendary Brazilian MMA gym) guys were so dominant with it.

I can see how it would take quite a lot away from their game and could be a part of why they were not as sucessful in the UFC at first as in Pride,on top of the octagon/ring change, wear and tear(Wanderlei) and injuries(Shogun).

They should be

I’m thinking Florian vs. Maynard could be a really entertaining fight.

Also if there is an undercard figth it will at least be exciting

by IRodC on Aug 28, 2010 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

on the PPV there is:

Penn/Edgar – Meaningful and depending on how motivated Penn is could be very good. Otherwise it will be Edgar working in and out to use his speed.

Toney/Couture – You know about this already

Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda – SHould be very good but if you don’t like ground work it may not be for you.

Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard – Hard to say how good this will be. Florian is very talented but Maynard is a very good wrestler so he could try to grind out a win on the ground.

Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis – Should be exciting, but it’s one of those fights that may be annoying to boxing fans as it’ll probably be a stand-up fight with good strikers for MMA but compared to boxers standing up it will look a bit sloppy.

Is this any different from what they do in Thailand?

Meaning they sanction fights over there where a guy with 30-50 fights are fighting guys with 5 or less fights and sometimes against guys making their debut. The guys there with lesser fights are often time professional kick boxer just using boxing to make some extra cash. I hear people call them fights a farce so is this any different just in reverse, boxing great coming into a MMA event. For what its worth I find this to be a disrespect to both sports and will not watch but check in here to find out what happens.

by TXroyal on Aug 28, 2010 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

I'd say a kickboxer is far more likely to be successful in boxing

than a boxer in MMA or vice versa. But I don’t think it’s really the same. Those guys don’t even train for boxing. It’s just that the two sports happen to be similar enough, and that everything you need to know for boxing you’d already know from kickboxing.

What's frankly amaizing to me is that as far back as 1968, I was watching Muay Thai fights in

in Bangkok while on R &R. I really got to understand and enjoy it. Now, along comes MMA, and everyone is doing a back flip like it’s the best thing since sliced breag. Give me a break here. MMA has been around for a bit. It just has not been marketd properly. The idea of a James Toinet type fighting in Thailand is bile inducing to purist of true kick boxing.

Toney-Couture R1

Toney saunters to the center of the cage. He’s just staying and waiting for Couture to move. And James trips him down with a weak shoot immediately. Couture mounted and throwing shots. Toney hugs him up from the bottom. Toney has no shot at this point. Couture just went right at him with a half-assed shot and Toney had nothing to offer.

Toney throwing shots to the ribs. Couture smothering him. Couture nails him with a couple more shots. Toney is cut a little on the forehead and looks totally lost. Couture grabs a choke. Toney could tap any time. Now Couture lets go and keeps pounding on him. Toney looks helpless. This is pathetic.

And that’s it. Toney taps out. Not even a minor competition.

Randy Couture SUB-1

BJ suffers from what a lot of fighters suffer from....

inability to tailor a gameplan to an opponent. He does several things better than anyone, but when he needs to adjust the game, he flat out refuses. Edgar has no fear of a takedown and can let his hands fly, while BJ has to worry about a quick takedown the entire fight.

Thing is

BJ Penn is not really motivated, which is frustrating for his fans, like myself. Penn, according to celebritynetworth is worth at around $40 Million. It’s hard for someone to stay motivated when you are financially taken care of for generations to come, like he is. It’s not like the $250,000 is THAT important to him, that he can’t take $150,000, is what I’m trying to say.

"Dawson was NOT a hype job. Dude schooled Adamek, beat Tarver twice (neither competitive), beat Johnson twice (once close, once a wipeout) and even beat Harding when Harding was still good. That is not hype. Those are results. I love how people see a guy lose once and all of a sudden nothing they ever did means anything. You are dead wrong."

Edgar 40-36

Penn won the first couple minutes, but it was all downhill once he slipped. Penn needs a stoppage imo.

Good night, all.

Pretty decent night of fighting, and it was interesting, personally, to watch an MMA card with that many decisions; I got a chance to actually watch this sport for an extended period. It was entertaining, mainly. Peace.

I don't get it

Why some people can’t consider this an option.
You can like both, but prefer one. I’m an MMA fan but I don’t go walking around telling people how terrible Boxing is as a sport, it has plenty of enjoyable merits as does MMA.

To each his own I suppose

In my experience

Boxing fans of the calibre of generally found on this blog, usually have nothing bad to say about MMA; either enjoying it themsleves, or treating it with indifference.

Also, I have found MMA fans to be fonder of insulting boxing, than boxing fans are of insulting MMA.

Both are guilty of talking shit

But Badlefthook, and Bloody Elbow seem to have a much better quality of writers when it comes to being fair to both sports. Some websites are just ridiculous though
