Playing matchmaker - Bradley-Alexander close; bantamweight tournament proposed; Mosley-Mora undercard announced

Per Golden Boy's press release, Victor Ortiz (right) will be facing Vivian Harris on the Mosley-Mora undercard. (Photo by John Gichigi/Bongarts/Getty Images)

According to Lem Satterfield, a match between Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander is closer than ever to being made.  The fight would be on HBO on January 29 and appears to be in the final phases of negotiations.  In our opinion, this is a battle between the two top junior welterweights in the world at the moment, and there really isn't a good reason for the fight not to happen.

This is coming after quite a bit of posturing by the two parties that the fight would need to be built up more before it could happen.  The fact of the matter is that neither Bradley nor Alexander is really on the radar of the major stars near the weight class, but a fight between the two could help launch one of them into stardom.  Also, now that Manny Pacquiao has been stripped of his Ring Magazine title, this fight would be for both the true light welterweight championship, as well as the Ring title, unless something completely crazy happens (like Amir Khan actually fighting Marcos Maidana in December and wiping the floor with him so badly that he jumps over one of Bradley or Alexander in the rankings).

According to Dan Rafael, Showtime might be putting on a Super Six-style tournament in the bantamweight class.  According to the report, Vic Darchinyan, Joseph Agbeko, Yonnhy Perez and Abner Mares have all already agreed in principle to participate in the tournament, which would create some huge paydays for a very strong group of fighters in a weight class where big paydays don't tend to come often.  Showtime also reached out to Top Rank about Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire, but Bob Arum had little interest in featuring his fighters in what could otherwise be a momentous event, since he can have his own fighters fight each other on Top Rank cards.  Hozumi Hasegawa reportedly also was not interested, as he's targeting a rematch with Montiel and would not want to be locked up in a tournament where he wouldn't have the opportunity for a rematch.

If the full tournament doesn't come off, don't be too shocked if Showtime still picks up fights for those four guys to fight each other.  Perez and Mares already have a rematch due, and would need to fight no later than November.  Still, even with a few of the top fighters not participating, there are plenty of other guys who could participate to make an exciting tournament.  Anselmo Moreno and Nehomar Cermeno are rematching each other in a week, and the winner would have a great case for being one of the top dogs in the weight class.  Koki Kameda has been looking to raise his international profile, and a tournament like this could certainly do the trick.  And if Chris Avalos really impresses this weekend, why not invite a top prospect to the party, in the spirit of the original super middleweight super six?

Finally, at today's press conference for the bout between Sugar Shane Mosley and Sergio Mora, opponents were announced for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Victor Ortiz.  Alvarez will take on former welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir, while "Vicious" Victor Ortiz will face former titlist "Vicious" Vivian Harris.  Color me unimpressed, and this doesn't add much value to an already weak pay-per-view card.

Since defeating Arturo Gatti in 2006, Baldomir has gone only 2-3, with both wins coming against mediocre competition while fighting at middleweight.  In his last fight, Baldomir looked sluggish and grossly outsized (sort of the way Vinny Pazienza looked at the end of his career), and four years removed from his moment in the sun, the man just doesn't seem to have much left.  With his monstrous chin, there's a strong possibility of the fight being a prolonged beatdown that is tough to watch.

Harris, frankly, is a step back in class for Ortiz.  He never had much punch resistance to begin with, and he's recently had his struggles with less than fantastic competition.  He's had recent problems with cuts, and he lost his last fight to Lucas Matthysse, albeit by one of the worst stoppages you'll ever see.  What would make the fight a lot more interesting is if the loser has to stop using the nickname "Vicious."

Fortunately for the fans, there are good free alternatives available that night, including the match between Juan Manuel Lopez and Rafael Marquez, as well as Frank Warren's supercard in the UK.

that mosley-mora ppv is a joke. that is friday night fights type stuff. with juan manuel lopez fighting marquez for free I don’t see how they’ll be able to break even on it.

Mosley-Mora

Absolutely a farce. They need to have a better undercard than the Diaz-Marquez card and then they throw up this POS. Seriously Vivian Harris? When you have “name recognition” due to being in a video game, you are not a big draw. Baldomir was already relegated to being an answer to obscure trivia questions, and they are trying to tell us that he is somehow a step up from Nate Campbell? Are Top Rank and GBP having a contest to see who can put up a worse PPV card because this is just plain awful. Can more people sign with DiBella, Shaw, and Goossen because at least they try with their fighters.

When competing with the Lopez – Marquez fight dont put on a crap card. Who is realy going to buy this over a perfectly good fight for free?

Many people. Showtime doesn’t have the subscriber base or promotion of HBO, and Golden Boy will promote the hell out of Mosley-Mora in the key markets (L.A. being the biggest for this fight).

But it’s a terrible main event and a lame card overall.

Meant to say “promotion of HBO/Golden Boy,” since as far as I know HBO isn’t doing the PPV for this one.

Count me as one who won't buy this...

… piece of garbage card. As much as I’d love to drop 50 bucks to watch Baldomir and Vivian Harris, I think I’ll pass.

Oh I have zero intention of buying this, and Shane Mosley is one of my favorite fighters. It’s a rotten card from top to bottom and Lopez-Marquez being on the same night just makes it even easier to pass up.

In the beginning when the Super Six was announced and people speculated whether or not this could be repeated a lot, I always talked about the idea of a Super Six 2 being at 140 or 118. HBO took over 140 in recognition of the depth, and I’d be thrilled if they take 118. Not having Donaire in is a bummer, but as for Montiel? I’m okay. It is weird seeing as he just beat someone I thought was borderline top 10 P4P and has two belts in a great division, but I really don’t think he’d hold up if he fought at this level. Hasegawa was controlling him pretty easily until he walked into basically a one in a million haymaker, and Donaire would/will stop him I’m pretty sure. He’s so wide open and his hands just aren’t quick. His supposed superior resume doesn’t really seem to hold up either as no one he has beat has gone on to do anything after.

It would be nice if Hasegawa would participate though, but I do get why he wouldn’t. I just wish someone would point out to him that he isn’t a Top Rank fighter and therefore won’t get a rematch with Montiel. I wonder if Koki potentially participating would be any enticement. They could do that one in Japan and it would be pretty huge.

I wonder if there is any chance of Poonsawat making 118. I doubt it as he hasn’t in years. Avalos I like provided he looks good. There is also Jorge Arce for the We Know This Is Going To End Badly But We Need a Name Fighter/Jermain Taylor slot. There are clearly enough fighters to fill the slots if they can get them on board. I wouldn’t even care if Avalos and Arce fill the last two spots. Even though Arce won’t fair well, he’ll make exciting fights. I hope they go with the same format.

With Arce

I just assumed that if Arum said no to Donaire and Montiel, then he’d say hell no to Arce, who’s halfway shot and a bigger cash cow than either of them.

Unless he recognizes how shot Arce is and sees the three first round payments as more than he is likely to get longterm from Arce, but I did definitely overlook that fact. You’re right.

I mean he did feed Arce to Vic knowing that he didn’t have a prayer for the payday. I wonder what he made there.

I suspect Arce pushed Arum to make that fight

Despite being shot, he’s still a competitive dude.

Super-Six at 140--

Arum and his in-house stuff is long since tired.
