James Kirkland set to return Nov. 6, Ishe Smith could be opponent

Ryan Burton of BoxingScene.com reports that HBO is working on a double-header with Golden Boy Promotions for November 6, and a featured bout would see the exciting James Kirkland return to the ring, with veteran battler Ishe Smith possibly awaiting him.

Smith (21-5, 9 KO) says that his adviser contacted him about the fight, and that he's willing. The 32-year-old has lost two straight to Fernando Guerrero and Danny Jacobs at 160 pounds, giving both tough nights in the ring. A fight with Kirkland (25-0, 22 KO) would be back at 154 pounds, where Smith feels he's a better fighter.

The 26-year-old Kirkland was sentenced to two years in prison last September. Having already served six months when he was sentenced, he's expected to be released on September 17. Kirkland plead guilty to a firearms charge while on probation. It's the second time in his young career that he's lost ring time to incarceration.

Kirkland's last fight came on March 7, 2009, when he stopped Joel Julio in the sixth round. He was building a reputation as one of the most ferocious and exciting fighters in the sport, a potential major future star. A return bout with Smith would be good ring work to shake rust, and also would be a bit dangerous. Smith has a strong chin and plenty of craftiness, and is no pushover opponent.

The bout would paired with a fight featuring Robert Guerrero. Golden Boy is currently looking for an opponent for Guerrero, who defeated Joel Casamayor on July 31. Showtime is scheduled for a November 6 show main evented by featherweight stars Juan Manuel Lopez and Rafael Marquez, so an HBO double-header might go head-to-head, or if we're lucky, Showtime will start early and HBO's Boxing After Dark will begin later in the evening.

Casamayor fight was terrible

I used to enjoy watching Guerrero. Now its just boring and lame.

Guerrero

Guerrero is sometimes a lot of fun, and sometimes not. Fighting a friend didn’t help, he definitely held back. But I’ll watch him again, I think he’ll provide more good fights than not.

The Klassen fight I did enjoy, but the quitting (yes, he quit) against Yordan and his other recent fights haven’t exactly left me wanting more. He lacks that fire to do what he’s capable of, making it even more frustrating.

Not a good idea?

Smith is a solid guy at 154 I would put him as a top 15 guy maybe top 10. And he has been fairly active and I thought he beat Fernando Guerrero didn’t see the Jacobs fight. Anyway they need to find a powder puff type guy and Smith aint it. Kirkland can beat him but after such a long layoff not worth the risk reward at this point. I would like to see him fight a powder puff then an guy like Smith and then try to get in the mix with Williams and Sergio (seems like nobody else wants to fight those guys).

He seemed pretty game against Jacobs too, but his KO numbers (or lack thereof) still speak loudly. If they’re actually daring to give Kirkland a semi-challenge his first fight back, well, good, it should happen more often. JK should hit the ground running to make up for lost time, anyway; his style won’t age well.

This wouldn't be a smart move..

Since Ishe seems to be a somewhat of a gate keeper, this dosn’t mean he is an easy win. Ishe has alot of skills, but has just come up short….for being out of the ring for the amount of time that James has been out..I can think of alot more easy fights. I am going to take Ishe in this fight to come out with the win if this fight comes off.

I like this fight a lot.

Kirkland has no time to be wasting, and is rightly taking a risky fight to throw his name straight back into the mix.

Yeah, I’m really confused by the reaction around this particular topic. I know Kirk gets love here, but are you all saying you actually like cupcake comeback fights?

When out of the ring as long as he been, you want a fight that will give you rounds. This fight will do that, but also is a big danger. If James wins it’s big ups for him..but there is lots of danger in this fight. Now mind you that Ishe hasn’t won the big fight when he has had the chance…Not in love with James myself, but if I was working with him..the Ishe fight would be his second fight back after fighting someone that would give him rounds to get the rust of.

I think Ishe’s who they’re hoping will give him rounds to get the rust off.

There’s a difference between fights you want to watch and fights that a fighter ought to take if his management is smart. I’d love to see Saul Alvarez fight Manny Pacquiao next week, but that doesn’t mean I think they should actually do it.

Absolutely.

And let’s be fair – Ishe Smith is good, but he’s not that good. If Kirkland’s in shape, has sparred and trained properly, then he’s a massive favourite.

I think Ishe Smith gives Kirkland some problems BEFORE he goes to jail

That said, if he’s going to be a top guy at 154, he’ll need to learn how to deal with slick fighters sooner or later, I guess.

Trust me..I am going to watch this one…James was coming on well, but for the time he has been out of the ring..this one might be a hard one to climb. All props for a hard fight in a comback fight..just again one I wouldn’t take..If James dose win and win with a big KO or a UD Beat down..his stock will go sky high….Like they say this is a Risk reward fight…Big Risk with a big reward if he wins.

James coming back is good for boxing. He and Wolf make a formidable team. He is

a tough guy and so is she. The two together = Atomic Cocktail.

I heard he's left Wolfe

Unconfirmed though.

Are We Sure Wolfe Will Be Training Him?

There were rumors otherwise a ways ago, haven’t heard anything since.

by BoxAnne on Aug 31, 2010 4:06 PM EDT reply actions

I’d be shocked if Pops and Ann aren’t training him.

My thoughts.

1. Welcome back James. You’ve been sorely missed, and you can now make a real positive impression on your sport, and also your sport will help you to get your life in order.

2. Don’t fuck this up, James.

I really hope Bernard has sat down with him.

Looking to see him fight hard and fight often. Ishe Smith is a tough fight. Good.
