"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
I was thinking of laying a few sheets down on a mid to late Cloud stoppage in a hard fight but then i remembered how good Johnson looked in his last fight.
Yes,Cloud is a better, tougher fighter than Yusaf Mack but Johnson looked somewhat rejuvenated last time out.
I have to go with Cloud in a close UD win but would not be suprised at any outcome other than Cloud being stopped.
I’ll be watching the UFC as we don’t have access to this bill in the UK but i will be getting the dvd later.
Should be a great fight between two forward marching warriors.
Not that I'm desperate to watch it...
But is Cory Spinks vs. Cornelius Bundrage available anywhere? A tune-up before the BAD card would be nice…

Jose Luis Castillo is fighting a guy (at last check, since his opponent has changed frequently) who is coming in 4-12-2 with 0 KOs tonight in Mexico. I wish to God he could hang it up.

I really thought that a stoppage defeat to Alfonso Gomez would have persuaded him to hang ‘em up… How naive was I? And if that won’t retire him, I think it will take a guy with a losing record to do so.

He is?
I’m not doubting — I just don’t know much about him. And his in-ring persona never seemed to scream “nice guy”.
Anyway, good for him. I’m shocked though.
I really just meant that K9 works hard and is willing to fight just about anyone. I probably shouldn’t have said “nice guy” — for all I know he throws rotten eggs at old woman when they try to cross the street.

Here’s why it doesn’t surprise me. Over in the TBB thread we were just talking about it, and what stood out to me (and why I decided to throw down a pick on Bundrage in the pick’em game there) was really Spinks’ last fight, over a year ago against Latimore. Spinks fought flat-footed and tried to use power, which was bizarre, and he was able to outfight a guy who…frankly got overrated thanks to what was likely a fluke win over Sechew Powell, who was high on marijuana tablets that fight too. But Bundrage seems to do best when he can be a straight attacker, and I knew that Spinks couldn’t hurt him, so if Bundrage could start fast and/or Spinks again had the idea to go fight because his legs aren’t what they used to be, I figured Bundrage could win that fight. Add in that Spinks was so grossly out of shape earlier this year that Kevin Cunningham quit and the fact that Spinks fights once a year, and I’m just completely not surprised. Bundrage, at 37, was still hungry. Spinks, at 32, seems almost indifferent to his career anymore in a lot of ways.

I have to say the hype around Alexander right now really surprises me. A major spread in the NYT? There are a lot of more proven and deserving young fighters out there, imho.
Sort of like you were with Ward for a while, Scott, I’m just not as sold on this guy yet as the rest of you seem to be.

I like that they’re touting that Chad Dawson could win his third “world championship” in three years. How on earth does that sound good? Either he always loses the “championship,” which isn’t the case, or the “championships” are so meaningless that he just gives them away after he wins them, which IS the case.

Good solid effort by Cloud.

Cloud-Johnson R1

Johnson working a jab early, Cloud wanting to do the same. Cloud looking to shoot a counter right, now looks to the body. Cloud eating some jabs right down the middle. A right from Cloud clips Johnson, Johnson goes to the body. now they’re winging shots at center ring, barely moving. Nobody landing big, though. Johnson is slipping that left hand right through the guard pretty frequently. He’s hitting the body fairly well, too. Cloud is hitting a lot of gloves, elbows and air in the first two minutes, but he’s getting a few shots in clean too. A close round, and I liked Cloud’s energy. Johnson’s best work was on the jab.

Cloud-Johnson R2

Johnson the aggressor to start this round and he’s working the body and upstairs. Really targeting the body and landing some good shots early. Cloud clearly has no fear of Johnson, though, and now he presses him to the ropes and RIPS Johnson to the body with several shots. Very good comeback from Cloud. Good hard counter right by Cloud. Big right by Johnson! Johnson and Cloud both throwing tons of punches already, and it’s about what we expected.
Johnson back to the body. Johnson throwing bombs now! Cloud seems bothered badly by a body shot, which opened up a punch upstairs that landed nicely. Johnson is really looking to soften him up to the body. Big right by Johnson again! What a 1-2! Cloud’s aggression has totally died! Johnson rips with two more rights! Johnson imposing his will this round! Right from Cloud now! Here comes Cloud throwing! This is going to be a war of attrition it appears. What a rough round this has been. Good right by Cloud pushes Johnson back near the bell!

Cloud-Johnson R3

Harold Lederman: “OK, Bob! What a goddamn fight this is!”
I hear you, Hurrld.
Slower pace to start the third, both guys felt power in the second. Cloud starts unloading in bunches about a minute into the round, but Glen Johnson avoids most of it. Johnson too slow to land a big overhand right. Johnson clips him across the chin with an uppercut inside. This has been a jab round for both, with Johnson getting the better of it, but the round is there to be stolen with 20 seconds left. TWO good rights from Johnson should seal the round for the vet.

Cloud-Johnson R4

Johnson starting to growl on every jab. They’re both posturing a bit in the first half of this round, with Johnson’s jab dictating pretty much everything. When Cloud does get to open up, he’s hitting a lot of gloves. Short right by Cloud. Johnson to the body, Cloud to the body. At points they’re actually mirroring each other. This is a rough round, just not explosive. Good right from Cloud! Johnson hit again with a good right, then one to the body. The rights upstairs aren’t perfect, but they’re showy and they’re scoring, too. Cloud pulls away in the second half of the round, I think, though again both had their moments. This is an intense, highly competitive fight between two guys who look good tonight.

Cloud-Johnson R5

The rounds are starting slowly pretty routinely now, but not in a boring sense. Just quiet before the storm, even if the storm isn’t amazing. Cloud starts the warring this round with a good right hand. Johnson getting right on Cloud now, maybe hoping to wear him down. But it gets Johnson hit with most of a left hook, and Johnson blocks a few more. Cloud has a ferocity to him. He sees an opening and looks not just to exploit it, but to tear it to shreds.
Johnson hit hard with a left hook after a right! JOHNSON IS HURT! Cloud to the body, now ripping away! Johnson trying to survive! 30 seconds left in the round! Johnson fires back now! Boy, is he savvy. There was a point he LEFT HIS FEET, it appeared, in that whole dela. Right hand by Cloud hurts Glen again though! Johnson getting hurt, now he clinches up. Right hand Glen, better right by Cloud!
Bell sounds!
Cloud 10-9
Cloud 48-47
We’ll see if that affects Johnson going into the next round. It could. He’s 41 years old.

Cloud-Johnson R6

Right hand staggers Glen a little again. It looks like Johnson’s legs are starting to go. Cloud has found a good rhythm and his power shots are hurting Johnson. Cloud tearing away again! Johnson’s guard is high and he’s just getting battered with his own gloves now. Cloud is showing big aggression. Johnson doing all he can, but the zip is fading from his punches, while Cloud still has a lot left on his.
Johnson fighting back now. I figure if he’s going, it’s on the shield. And Johnson’s pressuring now! Cloud is backing down a bit! Johnson misses a right, Cloud lands one. A minute left in what is now a tough round to score. Cloud was aggressive early, but not landing a ton, and it looks like Glen has gotten himself composed again and has taken the pace of the fight back. Johnson’s jabs landing, to the head and to the body. Cloud with a right. Another fantastic round. This is a hell of a fight.
I like how Johnson addresses the crowd after every single round.

Cloud-Johnson R7

Cloud using the jab again after having abandoned it a bit. Johnson jabbing away. Kellerman tries to excuse the crowd not being excited by explaining that they’re not from St. Louis, but honestly it doesn’t matter where you are. This fight is a pure hardcore fight fan’s delight and something that will never meet a great response to a live crowd anymore, no matter where it is. It’s tactical, it’s grueling, it’s subtly brave on both sides, and it’s two guys doing real good work.
This round was the slowest of the fight — Cloud seems to be making small mistakes to me, and I think Johnson has taken back control of the fight. But it’s not firm, and who knows what the judges have?

I’m not quite sure why Cloud has these lapses where he seems too hesitant. Cloud fights in spurts.

Cloud-Johnson R8

Cloud’s corner is looking for a right uppercut, as they feel Johnson is a “sucker for a right uppercut” throwing his “fallin’ over jab.” They could be right. Both guys look a bit weary in the corners, but then they straighten up and head out for more.
Johnson still using his jab, and now Cloud gets ferocious. Johnson getting hit again as Cloud just SWARMS! Johnson can’t do anything but cover up there, but he weathers the storm and chops Cloud with a right hand! That swarm might have done Cloud more harm than good, really. I think about two shots got in clean and the rest was a lot of energy spent on little results. Cloud is a bit excitable at times still, and it showed there for sure.
And with 40 seconds left, it’s back to the veteran leaning on the younger man and taking control of the pace once more. Cloud swarming a bit again, and landing some good rights. Johnson getting tagged a bit, but blocking most. Good round for Cloud though.

Cloud-Johnson R9

Johnson gets a right, Cloud just shrugs it off. Johnson’s punches really have no mustard left on them. But he’s keeping his hands going, and Cloud seems to struggle with that. Cloud is almost taking this round off, which is just bizarre and the only REASONABLE explanation is that Cloud is gassed out. Johnson is just constantly going this round, and he wins it on activity.

Cloud has to be physically running on empty. He’s throwing hard this round, but in bursts and there’s no rhythm to what he’s doing. Johnson is right there with him the whole way, too. I think Cloud is winning this round, but I’m not 100% sure he’ll win the round on the cards.

Cloud-Johnson R11

Cloud throwing, Glen blocking and leaning. Cloud’s corner has advised him to go to open war and just tag back and forth, assuming he’ll hold up and Glen won’t. They might be right. And that’s crazy fun advice.
Cloud much more aggressive this round and halfway in starting to tear up Johnson a bit. Johnson is getting hurt and is on iffy legs. He’s not letting Glen clinch him at all. Johnson is getting battered all of a sudden, just sort of falling into Cloud and trying to tie him up, but Cloud is doing a good job of stepping back. Johnson is holding on repeatedly until the bell.
Big, important round for Tavoris Cloud. He’s definitely got his flaws, but this guy’s a fighter.

Cloud-Johnson R12

Well, let’s see what we get. Right hand by Johnson grazes Cloud. Cloud catches him coming in again, because Glen is just sort of wandering in. There’s a minute left in the fight. I think both guys would love to be warring here, but they’re both tired. Johnson trying to fire back, but Cloud’s using pure aggression, even if not landing much, to control this final round. Johnson has no pop left. With 30 seconds left, he’s tying up when he doesn’t really need to. Cloud throwing, Johnson throwing. Cloud just has more left. Johnson is almost completely finished. A real good fight, and Johnson loses, IMO, with his head held high. He is still a hell of a fighter, but he met a guy with more energy and more left in the tank tonight.

Good fight, fine scoring if you ask me (it’s a round different than what I had, and many of the rounds were close), and a fine showing for both guys. I had it a draw, and I had to wonder, is having three guys watching a fight from the same angle really the best way to score a fight, in 2010? We’re seeing the fight better from TV than they are from right there…but even if you can’t follow me there, why not position a judge on every corner? (This was my girlfriend’s idea…not a bad one, either. Keeps them away from each other, anyway.)

Alexander-Kotelnik R1

Alexander looks lightning fast to start this fight throwing his jab out there, and shooting a 1-2. He’s not landing much, but Kotelnik just isn’t doing much of anything. Alexander targeting the body with a straight left. Kotelnik is sneaking jabs in, but he’s throwing a punch at a time. Alexander staying very busy and landing a little here and there. Stiff jab smacks Kotelnik, the first good jab of the round from Alexander. CompuBox has Alexander having thrown nearly twice as many punches as Kotelnik with 30 seconds left. Not a ton going on this round, but I think Devon’s activity and those sneaky little body shots take it.

Kotelnik looks very good.
Guess he couldn’t win the round with that few (relative) punches, but his guard is tight. Alexander was fast, but if you told me he landed 8 punches that round, I’d believe you.
Alexander-Kotelnik R2

Nice right by Kotelnik lands. If Alexander is taking him lightly, he’s going to have a fight on his hands. Kotelnik is no stud, but he’s also nothing to play around with. Right hand and a left hook by Kotelnik. I think Kotelnik has some real confidence. Left hand by Devon, and then another good one comes down the pipe.
Very good first half of the round, and we’ve got both guys opening up a bit more. Alexander’s little shots to the body are effective, but he doesn’t follow them up too often. He’s always done that. Kotelnik’s shots are landing with more thud on them for the most part, but Alexander is swaying things with activity again. Kotelnik with a real good right hand again. Alexander needs to make some adjustments, because Kotelnik found some good openings this round, used his jab well, and is doing well defensively.

If I was in Alexander’s corner, I’d tell him to calm the FUCK down. Dude is spraying punches with no concern for openings. Playing to the crowd, if you will.
Alexander-Kotelnik R3

Cunningham’s corner advice is very good. If there’s a chance Devon doesn’t think he’s got a fighter in there with him, Cunningham is going to try to convince him.
Both guys a bit jerky in the first minute, but then when Kotelnik gets a chance, he pours on some pressure. But Alexander comes back. This crowd is pretty hot, so that’s nice. Kotelnik opening up with more shots, not all of them landing, but showing no fear of Devon. Straight left by Alexander does land. This is a tight round with a minute left.
Crowd responds to Devon throwing a series of shots that don’t land at all. There’s a NICE right from Kotelnik. Another right clips Alexander. Devon is just leaving himself open too often for my liking. They’re calling this for Devon, but I don’t think there’s a whole lot between them right now, and if anything, Kotelnik is landing better shots and outboxing Alexander, who’s just flinging his hands around.

All I know right now,
is that when the scorecards come out for this fight, I’m going to be pissed. I’m almost praying for an Alexander KO, even though I’m rooting for Kotelnik, because at least that would be a definitive end.

Alexander-Kotelnik R4

Alexander is really having trouble doing much with Kotelnik, or at least much that really matters. But then Alexander opens up a bit halfway into the round and does some nice work, while Kotelnik, unfortunately, just kind of stands there. Andriy’s timing on counters has been terrific tonight. Alexander is trying, if anything, to do TOO MUCH in there. He’s showing some immaturity in this fight, but I thought he took this round.

Alexander-Kotelnik R4

Kotelnik is pressuring nicely. Has the whole fight. He’s stalking, he’s got a confidence about him, he has no fear of Alexander, isn’t having any trouble dealing with fighting in the U.S. for the first time. I mean this isn’t easy for him by any means, because Alexander is for the most part right there with him, but the best shots have come from Kotelnik almost the entire fight.
And in this round, I thought Devon won the final 30 seconds, at least until Kotelnik landed another good right at the end of the round. I’m already just waiting on what are going to be wide, crowd-influenced scorecards, but right now, Devon Alexander is in by far the toughest fight of his career, and I think he knows that. I know Cunningham knows it.

I always thought he was good, but this fight is telling me he’s a bit more than good. He’s really good. He’s exposing — I hate that word because people misuse and overuse it, but I’m trying to use it the right way here — some of Devon’s flaws. In the long run I have no doubt that no matter what, this fight will be good for Alexander, but Kotelnik is giving him all he can handle and then some.

This is reinforcing my belief that Bradley will beat this guy, Both Bradley and Alexander are fairly easy to hit, but Bradley is much more accurate.
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"

It’s changing my mind. I don’t know what happens the rest of this fight, but as much as I like Alexander, I would not pick him to beat Bradley at this point. I still hope the fight happens if Devon wins though, because styles make fights and anything can happen and so on.

And Lederman has it 5-0 Alexander now. I think that’s awful scoring.
Good jab by Kotelnik, left hand comes back from Alexander. Alexander continually moving, but now not throwing as much as earlier either, and still not landing as many good, clean shots as Kotelnik is landing. He got in a right to the body (Kotelnik did) that nobody even bothered to call. Kotelnik is landing his jab well.
Kotelnik completely dominated this round. If Lederman gives this one to Alexander, I don’t know what to say. This was all Kotelnik, and the clearest round of the entire fight.

Alexander doing better in the first half of this round than he did in the last round. He’s moving more…but still, I don’t see what he’s doing offensively, and he’s trying like hell to bait Kotelnik, who isn’t baiting. Kotelnik is coming in on him very well still. I mean Alexander is throwing a ton, but still not landing a lot, and Kotelnik tags him with a counter right hand. This is a tough round to score even though Devon threw twice as many punches. But Kotelnik is relaxed, in control, and still landing the best shots of almost every round.

Good uppercut from Kotelnik. Again they totally ignore it, because they’re LAMENTING THE FACT THAT THEY WON’T HAVE A FLOYD MAYWEATHER INTERVIEW. WHO FUCKING CARES?
Oh my God, they’re going to keep talking about Floyd Mayweather, and meanwhile, the rhythm of this fight is not changing. Alexander has slowed down again some, Kotelnik is still landing some nice shots, Devon doesn’t look sharp in there, and they’re talking about Manny fucking Pacquiao’s motherfucking DRUG TESTS. WHO GIVES A SHIT? Update me on BRETT FAVRE NEXT, PLEASE! I NEED IT. I NEED IT.
God I hate sports TV.
But here comes Devon Alexander with a charge! I think Alexander is now totally aware that he’s in a dogfight. He’s actually getting his jab in now, but Kotelnik comes back hard in the final ten seconds too! Both land good shots there. Good round where they wasted more time talking about TWO GUYS WHO AREN’T FIGHTING

I did not watch any boxing tonight
But this was an epic RBR.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
I was coming here to check if everyone else thought HBO was as off base as I did. They are all giving Alexander credit for shit that doesn’t land at all. Good to see I’m not crazy.
Alexander-Kotelnik R9

BIG right by Kotelnik backs Devon down again. Alexander is just landing NOTHING clean anymore. He looks weary in the ring, frustrated, he wasted way too much energy punching the air early in the fight, and Kotelnik has him…I don’t want to say REELING, but in trouble. Even if the cards don’t see it, and I doubt they will, Alexander knows it.
They’re going to look at Alexander’s cut. That was from an accidental clash of heads. Referee is Vic Drakulich by the way. Doctor looks at it for about two seconds and goes, “uh, yeah, go fight,” because it’s barely even notable. I mean it’s not GOOD, but it’s not affecting him, or shouldn’t be, at least badly.
Kotelnik continues to go at him. He’s trying to drag Devon into a fight. He has no fear of Alexander. Kotelnik si no puncher, but he WANTS a firefight. He’s begging for it. Great right hand from Kotelnik. Again HBO ignores it.

Alexander-Kotelnik R10

I’m DUMBFOUNDED by Lederman’s explanation of his terrible scorecard. And then Kellerman does his “who would you rather be” scoring that he thinks MOST people score with, which is patently absurd, but hey.
Alexander is doing nothing offensively other than occasionally deterring Kotelnik by moving his hands around and throwing more punches than Kotelnik is throwing. That’s it. He’s not landing better shots, cleaner shots, harder shots. He’s being outboxed. Period. Kotelnik is schooling Alexander to a degree tonight. CompuBox has Kotelnik up 19-8 in punches landed with 20 seconds left in this round. I am NOT saying score fights on CompuBox numbers. But Alexander is not winnning this fight in any way, shape or form. Kotelnik wins ANOTHER round. He’s going to get jobbed out there.

Alexander-Kotelnik R11

Alexander comes out hard and fast. None of this, what I’m saying, is anti-Alexander. He’s trying. I think he’s just in a really tough fight and Kotelnik is fighting very well and outboxing him. Alexander is tired from wasting energy early. WASTING it. Alexander is a very talented young fighter, but he’s meeting a challenge tonight and just coming up short IMO.
And then Alexander slows back down as we approach the mid-way point of the round, which in this fight has given Kotelnik chances to do good work over and over and over. And there’s a right from Andiry. Alexander is throwing a bunch there, but the ONLY CLEAN PUNCH is Kotelnik’s right hand. This was a closer round, and I think Devon just nicked this one, but barely.

Kotelinek isn’t to sharp either, but he’s the contender. Nobody expected much from him, but Devin is definetly showing me some possibilities of being overrated.

First minute is busy for Devon, but he’s still eating shots. But bless the kid, he’s doing all he can to win this round and this fight, and showing real heart out there. Kotelnik is landing cleaner shots though. Still landing cleaner shots. And it’s not like it’s easy to miss that he’s landing the cleaner shots. It’s as clear as fuckin’ day. But they both land good shots with 20 seconds to go!
This is a REAL good fight. I’ve really enjoyed it. They throw until the end. Kotelnik won this fight. There is no doubt in my mind that Andriy Kotelnik deserves to have his hand raised. Not a single doubt.

Just got in and sussed out the fight . What a shocker! Russian fighters seem to handle southpaws well , Im noticing it more and more . Tszyu was an expert at hitting them with right hand , left hook combos. Thanks for the round by round SC . The judges has a 7 point swing to your and most other posters card Scott. HBO and Lederman are always pulling this shit. Harold continually counted Calzaghes misses as hits against Hops . I always thought Bradley was better than Alexander , hes a great infighter. Devon is still an amateur even though he is flashier than Bradley . Ward v Dirrel will be really interesting because its a similar fight . The faster flashier guy( Dirrel) v the great infighter who also has a great jab and a good sneaky right hand . Khan and the poms must be gloating after this one LOL Cheers Fellas.
