Well that fight never should have been on a PPV undercard. Korobov is just being brought along very slowly. That he was ever on a PPV undercard with that crap fight he had was the mistake, not that he’s not on them now so much.

I wish I could watch this tonight, but I have to go to a friend's birthday party.

It seems HBO is not replaying this late night tonight. Bummer. Wish I could watch this when I get home later. Think there will be streams up for it after the fact? Some other way to watch it late tonight? Man, I really need to invest in a DVR.

Peterson-Rios R1

Peterson working the jab. Peterson swipes him with a chopping right hand. Stiff jab by Peterson. Rios with a body shot. Peterson back with a handful of body shots, Rios covers up and tries to keep pressing forward. Uppercut from Rios. Peterson has a habit of bending down super low. Uppercut by Rios and a good one. Peterson banging at the guard, then down to the body. Good pace from both in the first two minutes.

Peterson’s jab has pretty well owned the round, and he’s thrown some hard shots off of it.

by Verklemptomaniac on Sep 11, 2010 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

Peterson 10-9. I think that little “passion” bit was surprisingly accurate. Peterson is obviously technically superior, but the way Rios worked on the inside is the sort of thing that can do damage and sway judges.

10-9 Peterson

But considering how much he landed, he didn’t seem to hurt Rios much along the way. Rios could damage him on the inside if he lets him. Still, very slick mix of body/head punching.

Peterson-Rios R2

Good body shot by Rios. Peterson still wanting to use the jab. Rios likes the uppercut inside, and now he’s starting to build some momentum. Good uppercuts by Rios! That punch is there all day right now. Peterson banging with Rios, Rios SNAPPING his head back with uppercuts! Here we go! It’s a phone booth brawl now!

That uppercut is scoring BIG. Peterson trying to man up and stay inside with Rios. Right hand Rios. Uppercut is there again, this time left handed. Peterson throwing back. What a cracking round this is. Right hand Rios. Both targeting the body nicely. Peterson ripping to the body with hooks! Rios throwing, Peterson throwing, hot damn it’s a fight!

Damn good round. By God. More of that. Good round for both guys, I favor Rios just slightly.

Nice left hook by Peterson. These two are just throwing and throwing. Now Rios ripping him to the body, throwing that uppercut again. There’s a right hand that glances. This is some really aggressive stuff from Brandon Rios. Guarantee he’s making fans tonight.

Rios digging to the body, left hook to the chin lands square. He’s going body to head really well. Peterson isn’t moving around much anymore. Rios really getting the best of this round, and hurts Peterson with two left hands. Back to the body, back to the head. Peterson counters, Rios counters! Goddamn! Big, big round for Rios with 30 seconds to go. But Peterson is landing too. He just can’t budge Rios.

Both land good shots. BIG left hook by Peterson. Shot back by Rios is a good one!

Rios is just a punch machine and I think slowly he’s wearing down Peterson. Peterson is getting hit to the head, to the body, and constantly. Peterson is doing a good job, in fact, NOW HE’S ROCKED! PETERSON’S HURT ON A RIGHT! Rios winging shots trying to get him down. Peterson doing a good job hanging on without holding at all. He really needs to clinch. LEFT HOOK HURTS PETERSON AGAIN AS HE TRIES TO BANG WITH RIOS!

What a fight this is! Left hurts Peterson once again! He’s got no idea how to clinch up and save some time. Finally he gets hold of him. A minute left in the round. Peterson digging to the body. He will not back down. He wants to war back. Phone booth fight once again. These two are just throwing and throwing. Rios continues to catch him with hard shots. That uppercut is STILL there. Peterson recovered well overall, but a huge round for Rios.

I can’t help but think that a more active Peterson wouldn’t be having this much trouble. He’s barely fought the last two years.

Peterson starting to move again. But now he’s not really using the jab much. Peterson seems a bit lost this round. He’s not taking as much punishment, but he’s not too effective. But there’s a left hook from Peterson after a left from Rios. Anthony’s on his bike a bit this round, maybe still getting his cobwebs shaken from the fourth.

LEFT HAND AND DOWN GOES ANTHONY PETERSON! He’s hurting, but it’s very late in the round. Bell sounds.

Peterson trying to bang still. I just don’t think he can win that fight over Rios. Rios drills him with another good uppercut. Body shot by Peterson, maybe strayed a bit low and referee warns without stopping the action. Body shots by Peterson, definitely going low. Rios just fights back and wings one of his own.

Rios is flat wearing him out. Yet another low blow by Peterson, and Rios falls down from that one. No point taken. Peterson still swiping low. Left hook by Rios, and ANOTHER low blow. Come on, Peterson.

“At this point it’s a bad acting job from Anthony Peterson.” — Max, and he’s right

Rios gets another moment. Finally the referee deservedly takes a point. Rios AND ANOTHER LOW BLOW!

Peterson-Rios R7

Peterson throwing to start the round, but Rios starts coming back. Rios digging to the body again. Peterson chopping his way back into this fight. I can see people scoring the last round for him, but I have a hard time giving a credit for damage caused after like five low blows if a round is close. Peterson starting to really crack Rios, but Rios still will not budge.

Good shots upstairs from Peterson, Rios trying to answer but his pace has dipped a bit. Not that it couldn’t have — he was insane the first five rounds. Nasty shots inside from Rios, including that uppercut coming back. Rios backs him down again late in the round with a combination. Rios hurts Peterson again, and Peters goes low again.

And low AGAIN.

And the referee disqualifies him right before the bell.

Not a strong showing for Anthony Peterson to say the least, but I hope he gets active and back on track. He IS a good fighter, and he fought well before the knockdown and the subsequent low blow party.

Gamboa, when he lets his hands go, dominates this fight — as usual. When he doesn’t — and forgive me — he’s really kind of dull and even a bit annoyingly cocky standing around shuffling from the outside. He needs a real challenge, if there is one. Maybe he’ll answer the call when one is placed.

Gamboa-Salido R5

Gamboa with a flashy left hook to start the round. Salido slips about halfway into the round, with a little assistance from Gamboa. Salido and Gamboa trade a little bit close, both landing. I think I might do a feature on this tomorrow or Monday, but…there’s just something about Gamboa that doesn’t get me QUITE as excited as it does some people. It’s become a pattern over his career.

But he’s winning, though that was Salido’s best round IMO. Or Gamboa’s worst.

Still give that one to Gamboa. But just barely.

Salido still throwing with intent. Salido landing shots pretty routinely now, sneaking in low and coming over the top. Salido having a much better round again. Gamboa may have taken his foot too far off the pedal. Salido with a little uppercut.

Gamboa-Salido R7

Gamboa coming out to wing now, and Salido there to meet him. Salido seems willing to trade even though he seems to understand it might get him knocked out. Salido strays a bit low, but Cortez warns Gamboa for going behind the head. Both landing in close. That Gamboa backs off and bounces around after those fairly even exchanges makes him seem like he’s doing a ton more than Salido, but at this point I really don’t feel like he is. Salido is constantly trying to come in, and Gamboa likes to back off and look easygoing. Maybe it’s me.

And Gamboa pops him clearly after the bell. Max “doesn’t think it was dirty” because he was “showing off his athleticism.” Jesus, Max…it was obviously late.

Now they’re trading a little, and this is getting super chippy. Gamboa wants to hold, Salido is basically saying no. Salido stalking and stalking, staying busy. God, I just want to see Gamboa exert any real effort. Is that so much to ask?

Right hand Salido, Gamboa pokes him with a jab. Salido constantly trying to come at him. Gamboa is seriously just poking at him most of the time. Gamboa-Salido R12

Zaragoza tells Salido to “go for it all.”

Left hook and Salido falls, then shoves Cortez when he starts the count. Apparently, according to Max, EVERY TIME you get action heating up in the middle of the ring, someone slips. EVERY TIME!

Gamboa starting to bang away on Salido now. He’s going for it. Salido goes down, Gamboa chases after him and I think cracked him in the back of the head when he was down. Cortez is calling a punch while he was down, and rightfully so I suppose. But I don’t know if it was super intentional in, like, a malicious way.

Well hell. This is what I feared when I saw Joe Cortez. But Salido will fight on. Two points off?! Whoa — if someone has this closer than I do…

So the knockdown counts…and the two points…fuck.

So…uh. OK, two knockdowns against Salido, two points off for Gamboa.

Gamboa 10-7
-2 for Gamboa (so 8-7)
Gamboa 115-108

At this moment, I think Caballero beats Lopez and Gamboa, although Lopez seems more likely to get knocked out, and Gamboa seems more likely to lose his head and focus as he discovers his shit just doesn’t work against someone who can largely keep him at range. Top Rank’s gonna keep either of those fights from happening for as long as possible. Bob would probably be better off making Lopez-Gamboa now, in fact, short and long-term.
