Orlando Salido overweight this morning, likely to be stripped of IBF title

The Fight Poster Project

Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com reports that Orlando Salido is likely to be stripped of his IBF featherweight title before tonight's fight with Yuriorkis Gamboa. IBF rules dictate that featherweights can't weigh more than 136 pounds on the morning of the fight, and Salido came in at 138.

The IBF title will still be on the line for Gamboa to win, and Gamboa's WBA title will still be on the line for both. Should Salido win, the IBF title will be vacant.

The bout will be broadcast on HBO Boxing After Dark tonight at 10pm EDT. Bad Left Hook will have live, round-by-round coverage, scoring and analysis of the event, which includes a lightweight co-feature between Anthony Peterson and Brandon Rios.

Double weigh ins are stupid, but with that said, the reason they are stupid is that it requires people to potentially cut weight twice within 24 hours of the fight, which isn’t healthy. There is absolutely no reason not to make 136 the morning of, except for pure laziness, or not caring about the consequences (which seems much more likely to me).

no

He weighed in at 126 yesterday. He’s on weight — but IBF rules say you can’t weigh in the morning OF the fight at over 136 if you’re a featherweight. In other words, you can’t gain more than 10 pounds.

I’m not sure if I’m in favour of the IBF rule… Hugo Cazares is a prime example of a fighter who can make a certain weight, and then weigh as a lightweight on fight night. Is that fair? Not really, but he’s made weight so it’s legal. I’m torn on the idea, as I am on same day weigh-ins.
