The rematch between Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams is finally official. The two will rematch at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, on November 20, on HBO. While Martinez's middleweight championship will be on the line, the fight will be at a catchweight of 157 pounds.

If HBO says it often enough, it happens?

By this logic, maybe Ward-Dirrell would be happening if Showtime had only mentioned it MORE often?

Whatever. I’m thrilled this is going down again; this time, perhaps, without the need for scorecards?

Was hoping for D.C.

so that I could finally see a big title fight in my hometown, but I’ve seen PWill a few times at my local boxing club and I hope he pulls this one out more convincingly… Love Martinez too, though. So glad this got made; here’s to hoping we’ll have a solid finish to what’s been a pretty down year in boxing.

Looking for an edge, I presume

I doubt it helps him much anyway. Martinez has spent most of his career at 154.

Yeah, a psychological one maybe.

Can we stop the catchweights in title fights please? It’s just silly.

I hate catchweights with a passion. Who demanded this? It would make more sense if Martinez did than Williams.

It was Williams. I’m not sure why, but in the news report I read, it seemed like Williams was hoping to get back to welterweight (I wish he’s stop that shit already… besides, it’s not like 147 is the hotbed of action it was a few years ago) and maybe he’s down in weight. It’s the only thing I can think of.

Officially boycotting Pacquiao vs. Margarito.

I’m not a massive fan either, ESPECIALLY when there’s a lineal championship at stake. If both camps agree to it I don’t have any major beef towards it, but I’d prefer boxing without advantageous stipulations.

BTW

I have an article on Cotto’s status written, but can’t get the darn thing to post.

Well, catchweight or not, at least you know both of these guys will bring the goods come fight night. I’m rooting for Martinez (who I thought deserved a draw last fight), but Williams is relentless and Martinez is getting older. My money would be on PW.

But wait, I thought the buzz was that Williams wouldn’t take this fight because he is a fight-ducking diva?

So much for that nonsense.

The buzz wasn't wrong, exactly.

If you’re interested, read the link; Williams’ camp definitely avoided this fight as best they could, but ultimately, money talked, and bullshit (Angulo) walked.

Sounds more like a typical consideration for a fighter, not Divaish behavior to me.

And I content that it was all nonsense. Divas don’t fight Winky Wright. Or Martinez twice. Period.

And fight and beat Margarito

Who BTW landed plenty of punches on Williams in the latter part of the fight….and did not do any unusual damage.

Williams has balls and is no diva.
How smart and/or adaptable his is in the ring is another matter.

Clash?

Ugh. Isn’t this the same night as Marquez-Katsidis? Two potential Fight of the Year candidates on the same night, probably at the same time?

Not cool.

Correction!

Ah, Marquez-Katsidis is Nov. 27, the weekend after this fight. Two consecutive weekends with potentially great fights. That’s more like it!

I need more coffee … :)

Marquez-Katsidis may clash with Froch-Abraham though.

And Khan-Maidana clashes with the bantamweight tournament.

by Dafs on Sep 21, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

The latter of which has the potential of being a bore…..or a knockdown drag out slugfest and possible FOTY.

by pakinpower on Sep 21, 2010 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

can't see Froch-Abraham having any bore potential...

thinking more the latter ;)

Last post was meant for taco…and Froch vs. Abraham

by pakinpower on Sep 21, 2010 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised if Froch v Abraham never happened. Or Ward v Dirrell, for that matter.

I think

they will, both fights—but I think there will be further delay first, because I think this latest delay is political, trying to get them on the same night down the line.

Or, If Not Exactly That

that Showtime has to know what to say by the time Froch-Abraham happens—for instance, is it going to be a truncated tournament and this has become the winner-take-all finishing fight, or what. Hard for them to be broadcasting Froch/Abe without a word re the Dres, and with the tourney then being held hostage—they might just want to finish it there, and need to hype it accordingly. But I think/hope it will work out, and I think they’re willing to go one more delay to save it. Which is why I wouldn’t be too surprised if there were one more delay.
