Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s Idiotic Rant Shows Insecurity, Ignorance

This is not safe for work because of language, and I'll also say if you've got headphones on, turn them down first and work your way up from there. Sound quality is terrible.

"Once I kick the midget ass, I don't want y'all to jump on my d**k. ... Once I stomp the midget, I'm gonna make that motherf***er make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice. ... Rice with a little bit of cat, rice with a little bit of barbecued dog..."

And it basically devolves from there.

This is really the first time Mayweather has talked in a while, and holy hell, could he have not come off worse. "Money" sounds insecure, at a loss for anything intelligent to say, childish, and ignorant. This is a complete waste of time. There is good trash talking, stuff that drives interest in a fight, and then there is "trash talk" that just makes you seem like a stupid 13-year-old trapped in a millionaire 33-year-old man's body. This is the latter. Mayweather has driven zero interest in a fight with his moronic ranting in this video.

Pretty "Madison Avenue," huh?

You stay classy, "Pretty Boy."

i hope you werent thinking that when i posted this i was agreeing or advocating this in any way, i wasnt. i just wanted this to be brought to everybody’s attention.

also, we knew floyd is a vulgar guy. and like i said i am in now way agreeing with his rant or saying its ok to say the things he said, i am not at all surprised. ustream has been bad for a lot of celebrities in recent time, athletes included. its too intimate for these guys. their public persona matters too much, and while floyd has played villain in the past this taking it too far even for him. while this may actually be how he is behind close doors, he should have filtered this out.

race is always prevalent in sports, especially in an international sport like boxing where race is a lot of times part of the marketing and promotion. but theres a difference between “playing the race card” (which i thought don king did in a nice subtle way in his comments about him and floyd) and just plain being racist.

long story short… floyd is an idiot..

Floyd just smack talked himself into a lower bracket or completely out of future endorsements.

He should text Tiger if he wants more info on how to use technology and media to undermine your value. The difference is between those two huge btw. Tiger will know how much less he is making and what is no longer his. Floyd won’t ever know how valuable his brand might have been. The worst part of this whole thing is Floyd is encouraged

to speak this way, because it brings him some notoriety. And for a guy like him, who plays (maybe) the heel so rabidly, any press is good press.

I know none of these guys are saints, but if a guy in another major sport had this tape come out, there would be massive repercussions. For Floyd? It probably bumps his bottom line at the end of the year up by a tick or two.

There’s good trash talk (see: Chael Sonnen), then there’s this filth that most of us would get fired for saying in a public forum.

You did catch the whole “demo effigy” thing from Sonnen, right? I don’t know if he’s really on the other end of the spectrum.

But as far as this goes, I’m not at all surprised to hear those sorts of things from Mayweather. It’s a complete shame though.

by Brent Ducharme on Sep 3, 2010 8:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I do consider all the stuff I heard, and all the stuff there is video circulating sites

on the internet documenting the material I know Sonnen said leading up to that fight to be on the other end of the spectrum. He did what you do: he trash talked. Was it 100% clean? Of course not. Was it vulgar? Not really. Was it demeaning? Of course. Were there statement about culture that were offensive? You bet.

If it didn’t contain those components, it wouldn’t be trash talk, would it? Within trash talk there are lines you cross and lines you don’t. Part of the difference is that the closer Chael got to his fight, the cleaner and more focused his rhetoric became. The opposite appears to be true for Mayweather.

If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...

by misterjonez on Sep 3, 2010 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel like Sonnen had to clean some of the talk up after getting caught in lying about Twitter accounts and everything else.

I see your point of view, although, in using it, I’m not sure where we can say the bright line between offensive and otherwise lies.

Creating racial/cultural binaries is inherently problematic in any case. But even if we ignore that fact – as we so often have to when dealing with the fight game – even a vague understanding of history would probably lead most people to say that directing language about demon effigies and tribal savages toward South Americans is going to offend them just the same as Mayweather’s comments would offend someone who is Asian. If the language of colonization has really been cheapened that much in contemporary society though, then I suppose we are a people of short memory.

Also, Mayweather’s confused understanding of food staples is pretty well on par with Sonnen’s assertion that Brazilians speak Spanish.

Sushi

At first my association of sushi with Japan being bone deep, I couldn’t figure out why it was racist—obnoxious, yes, but what’s Japan got to do with it? then I realized, he really doesn’t know, they’re just all Asian to him. Yeesh.

by BoxAnne on Sep 3, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve tried to block out Mayweather-Pacquiao so much at this point that I spent about twenty seconds trying to figure out just who this mystery Japanese boxer he was trying to go in on was. Then it all came back to me.

by Brent Ducharme on Sep 3, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

You're never going to find a 'bright line' marking the

“OK” and “Not OK” sides of the ammo pile. It’s a necessarily ugly topic, with accordingly ugly material. I’m getting into hairy area here, but I’m trying to demonstrate the point as clearly as I can.

For Floyd to say those things, and not have the media call him on it, is a two-fold problem. Firstly, it’s a problem because every minority group in the USA is supposed to be protected, or at least publicly shielded from comments like his that are directed at them. Politicians, media and other high-profile individuals jump to defend minority groups from statements like this, and demand apologies whenever these types of statements come up, directed at a minority group.

The second problem is in the core of the social group that Mayweather is speaking to. People comporting themselves in this manner have an infectious effect on those who listen to them or idolize them. They hear Floyd say things like this, and they assume that they’re auto-cool, rather than decrying them for the filth they are and demanding he apologize. This directly undermines the entire ‘do unto others’ approach which is one of the few successful ethos for lifting public decency.

I understand we’re always willing to look the other way when someone in our ‘own’ group crosses a line somewhere, but for guys like Floyd the standards should be just that: standards. He shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this just because he is a member of a minority group, and I think until the social pendulum lands on that realization, you’re going to continue having these types of statements being made by high-profile people hoping to garner some attention.

The fact that Manny isn’t American shouldn’t matter here. The public outcry should be the same, if the social standards are to be upheld. My chief complaint with the whole situation is that it doesn’t appear there are any standards at all. I agree with the idea that we shouldn’t sling mud like this at people in a public forum, and that people who do it should be punished in a way that affects them.

If Manny fights Floyd and loses then all his success will transfer to Mayweather and everyone will say that Floyd could have beaten the fighters that Manny did having never risked anything !!! BUT that said should the fight never happen which is what I hope for then Floyd is forgotten having barely fought the best when they were the best !!! It’s a no win for the Pacman !!! Well Pacquiao still has the last laugh

Until Mayweather mans-up and decides to fight him, Pacquaio doesn’t need a response to this. Mayweather’s refusal to acknowledge Pacquaio’s challenge is his response.

This is no way to respond to Pacquaio’s comments saying that Mayweather needs him. Pacquaio stayed on the topic of boxing.

Until Mayweather signs the contract to fight Pacquaio, none of these comments matter.
If he wants to talk trash and dismiss Pacquaio, do it after you sign the contract to fight him. I wouldn’t have a problem with it then. Ali trash talked Frazier really bad for months leading up to their fight, but remember , it was after the fight was signed. Mayweather and Pacquaio have no agreement to fight and its mostly Mayweather’s fault why they do not have one. I still think Mayweather’s comments were a bit too much. And Mayweather as an African American Male should know how it feels to be stereotyped.

by The Floorer on Sep 3, 2010 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

And I know Mayweather gets a lot of racial remarks thrown at him from a lot of Pacquaio fans, but hes supposed to be bigger than that and just brush it aside. Everytime I go on examiner.com theres nothing but racial hate towards Mayweather, you would’ve thought it was the KKK leaving comments down there it was so bad. On numerous sites I’ve seen Mayweather being called the “N” word, monkey, big lips, and other racial names by “Pacquaio Fans” not Pacquaio himself. I’ve never heard Pacquaio, himself say anything like that about Mayweather before, and probaly never will. But Pacquaio cannot controll his fan base and who his fans are and if they want to shout out racial slurs towards Mayweather. I think within a days time, after he realizes some of the stereotypes that he put on Pacqauio he should come to the realization that he was totally out of bounds with his comments and apologize to Pacquaio for his remarks.
I remember early in March when the first fight fell apart over drug testing Pacqauio was saying that he wanted an apology from Mayweather for linking him to steroids. I didn’t feel that that situation warranted an apology. But this situation definetly does. But knowing Mayweather’s ego, that probaly wont allow him to do it in a timely fashion. He probaly realized that he shouldn’t have done what he did probaly 30 minutes after he did it, but like I said, his ego probaly wont allow him to suck in his pride and apologize. ….Maybe 10 years from now when both guys are retired and sitting with Bert Sugar, Al Bernstein, Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant looking over old boxing footage he’ll do it.

Well,

Worse than expected, and not much was expected. IMO, a chemical emotional imbalance can be triggered from within without blame to an over-adrenaled, or over-testosteroned or whatever health-compromised person, as well as deliberately taken. With that in mind, is it me? Or is this guy, as suspicious as he is about drugs, HIGH? Because he sure to god looks high to me. And 23 yrs in the West Village + 15 yrs in Holyoke, Mass. (dealing with the public in both places at times) have equipped me in plenty for knowing high when I see it. Not saying it’s deliberate, just saying how it looks to me. I always try to like him, never think of him as psycho, but that’s how this looks, and he may be perfectly straight in that rant, but he might want to think about even giving the appearance of HIGH.

I don’t want to waste more energy on this kid than he deserves

so I will repeat what I have said often in the past. Floyd, skills and accomplishments aside, is a small man; one whose narcissism and fragile ego interfere with his ability to see the larger picture.

Yes, his ‘game’ has created a notoriety that has brought his name to the attention of a large audience. It has also given him access, since fighting ODLH, to great wealth. But there is wealth and riches….and then there is great wealth sustained by riches.
The former is more fragile and temporal; the later more sustainable permanent.

Mayweather can see each tree as it’s planted but because he has his head so far up his own ass, he’s missing the forest that has grown around him. He need look no further than his TV, his self admitted source of information and culture.

The face seen every night is that of the POTUS, Barack Obama. A black man who has leveraged intelligence and ambition to the highest level. There are many role models that a man in Mayweather’s position could aspire to that have transcended opportunity and taken it to extraordinary levels. There is Tiger. Lebron. Russell Simmons. Jay-Z and countless others .….all of whom knew that getting there was one thing, staying there another.

Floyd, despite his self-image, is small potatoes. Had he any intelligence and/or real integrity, he could’a been a real contender.

by pakinpower on Sep 3, 2010 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know how many people would call Tiger or Lebron role models these days

I don’t want to get too far off track, but I saw a ridiculous poll not long ago. They asked about 1,000 Americans, randomly sampled, whether a number of things are moral or immoral. Adultery got like 92% in the poll, which was the second or third highest of all of the choices (which included things like perjury, mercy killing, polygamy, dogfighting, etc.). I mean adultery is bad and all, but it really does seem to get blown out of proportion a lot more now since Lewinskigate.

Fair enough

Demote Lebron and Tiger….but obviously for different reasons.

Lebron overplayed his hand in employing excessive media.

Tiger forgot a number of Clinton’s rules. First, if you are already the center of attention in a media saturated society, then recognize that everything you do is going to be scrutinized. That same adoring media will become your worst enemy if you’re not careful. Next, if going to cheat on your wife ….don’t. American don’t like adultery…..or so they say. And lastly, if you do (cheat), don’t use phones or text messaging.
