Roy Jones is returning full-time as analyst for HBO's Boxing After Dark. Show has used 2 announcers since @HBOboxing fired Lennox Lewis.
Dan Rafael's Twitter. Oh happy day. Hopefully he doesn't take the Antonio Tarver route and continue to have ill-advised fights after what should be his post-fight career is starting to take off.

I hope he doesn't talk over Max the whole time.
He’s got good insight and is articulate, but I never cared for it when he played the “I fought and you didn’t” card on Larry Merchant. You don’t have to have been a top-level pro to have something valuable to say about the game.

This is good news.
I fought and you didn’t"
I thought Foreman did that more than Roy.
I don't take personal insults well. My wires are such so that when it happens, i'm not going to put on head gear, lace up the gloves and put in the mouthpiece. I'm going to drop the gloves and just move in.
I’d say Foreman did it more, but Roy did it enough to be annoying too. It’s something I really, really hate. Then again, they were doing it to Merchant. Maybe it was their nice way of saying “Shut up, Larry.”

Right, I don’t deny that Merchant needs to be told to shut up periodically. I just like it when Jim does by explaining why the point Larry is making is so ludicrous, rather than Roy (or George, KB) just throwing out the fact that Merchant didn’t fight.

Yeah. As much as I respect guys who used to fight and their insights into a fight, it’s just lazy broadcast journalism. “Well I’m right because I used to do this and you didn’t, NERD.” That alone is just not a good enough reason to me. But then I hate most sports broadcasters who aren’t Al Bernstein, Steve Farhood, Steve Albert, Nick Charles… so the Showtime boxing guys, except that troll Gus Johnson. By far the worst, if you’re interested (you aren’t), is Thom Brennaman, who is absolutely unbearable.

Despite myself: I still love that track.
In 2008 Lewis commented on a possible match up with Riddick Bowe. "He waits until I am in retirement to call out my name," said Lewis. "I will come out of retirement to beat up that guy. I'll beat him up for free."
If he started off every broadcast with this song, then I might die from laughter.

I like that one too, but mainly because there is a highlights clip of Jones with that as the soundtrack, and it's brilliant.
I’ve watched it that many times now that I see that video when I hear that song. :)

I got Al's autograph in Tacoma in December
Extremely cool guy. Some security dude was trying to usher him away and he told the guy to hang on and signed the autograph for me.
It now hangs in a place of honor under my heavy bag with Abner’s, which I also got that night.

If you are a Brit, what were you doing in Tacoma?

I am not a Brit.
Live in Kittitas County, WA. (Hence the name.) About a two-hour drive from Tacoma, depending on how the mountain passes are. In early December, they were not good, but being there live for the Bantamweight tournament was well worth the hassle.

Haugen was a warrior.
Is he still active in the sport? Does he coach PAL down there or something?

I lost track of him, but he is heading up some kind of foundation for Autism. He really is
a solid guy. What you see is what you get. Not a phoney cell in his body. The movie, THe Fighter, could well have been about his life.

That’s good that he’s in charitable endeavors. They have pictures of him in the bars still. The old school guys remember him for sure.

Hell yeah!
Roy has good insight and point outs good things during the fight. Also, he speaks with charm and charisma. The best counterpoint to Larry’s dribble and Max squeak is Roy. And i dont mind the “I fought” card. Its a good way to say “speak wisely”. And yeah, Foreman played it much more aggressively. Im pumped.
How it helps someone to “speak wisely” is beyond me…
Such were the days, still, hot, heavy, disappearing one by one into the past, as if falling into an abyss for ever open in the wake of the ship; and the ship, lonely under a wisp of smoke, held on her steadwast way black and smouldering in a luminous immensity, as if scorched by a flame flicked at her from a heaven without pity.

I think you're being too literal, Mr Gold... :)
maybe “speak knowledgably” or “speak like someone who has been there, seen it and done it”…

I am absolutely and definitely excited at the idea of having someone who can tell us that you don’t have to go to Vegas to get away from distractions.

Absolutely!! :D

Wow, am i the only one who thinks he’s mediocre at best, and pales in comparison to rival Antonio Tarver on the mic?

Hey Brian
A very happy, if belated, New Year to you too! Did you have a good one?
So, what’s all this stuff about flamewars?

Ah, flamewars….just a few arguments escalating and not the best…undercurrent, but I think its all good now. You didn’t miss out on much, really ;)

i dunno about that, i still think tarver and foreman give great thoughts. tarver discusses like the jab to the solar plexus to stablize opponents, about intangibles, and little things a boxer does in the ring. i also think foreman has way more boxing knowledge than i woulda expected from this big powerful brawler. in the dela hoya mosley 1 fight, he called a good fight talking about how mosley was using the right or switching southpaw to nullify the left hand, and other important insights. that’s just me. holler!
"According to all the laws of aerodynamics the bumble-bee should not fly, but the bumble-bee does not know this and so flies anyway."
I definitely like Tarver better.
And he and Bernstein have built a great rapport, which contrasts sharply with Roy’s contentiousness with Merchant.

I think for me and maybe for some others it’s partly RJJr.‘s contention with Merchant that is liked, altho’ not the only or most important thing—matter of personal taste, they’re both good.

See above
I have no problem with people contending with Larry, I just prefer when they articulate why he’s not correct at a given moment, instead of just resorting to pointing out he wasn’t a fighter.

Here continues my debate why I like AT over RJJ
Transcript for RJJ for Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana round 1:
RJJ.: Khan wants to shake hands and this cat mumbles with a left hook! laughs
Jim- I don’ think he’s terribly interested in shaking hands.
RJJ: No he’s not. laughs.
RJJ: Well don’t get hit with that overhand right (referring to khan)
RJJ: Oh he hurt him with that.
30 secs later: laughs at a Larry Merchant comment
RJJ: Maybe he (Maidana) didn’t realize that Amir Khan can punch too.
RJJ: The hand speed is so different and so phenomenally different. Khan has so much more hand speed than Maidana that he’s throwing Maidana off.
Jim Lampley: Right, Maidana cannot believe that Khan can throw a 4 punch combination before he responds.
RJJ : And have power on it
RJJ: Oh! Ohhhhh! (when maidana goes down from body shot)
Jim lampley : and he’s gonna get up!
RJJ: But he don’t want to, but he don’t want to though..
Larry Merchant: If he got up Roy, he wanted to get up.

Antonio Tarver calling Ward Kesser Round 1;
AT: I think it’ll do well (the 18 X 18 ft. ring vs. 20 × 20 ft.) for Andre b/c if any one of these of these fighters are able to move and be versatile, it would be Andre.I mean he’s known for his quick feet.
AT: (On Kessler) No he’s not (a fast starter). You know he takes his time, he set up and mumbles his guy. he sees what he can get away with . and then he executes. that’s a sign of a veteran fighter. A veteran champion
AT: Most definitely and coming as the challenger it’s very important that you dictate that first round, that you’re not going anywhere. That you’re here for the long haul.
"According to all the laws of aerodynamics the bumble-bee should not fly, but the bumble-bee does not know this and so flies anyway."

Ditto
Is it a denouncement of both, or a statement that Tarver is the less poor choice?

Nothing about those posts says to me that Tarver is any better than Jones, unless I'm missing something.
I mean, I could put up photos of these guys as teenagers, and that makes just as strong a case for either as a better commentator in 2011 as these two ‘transcripts’ do. In other words, there is nothing here. :/
